Ray Mercer knocks Tim Sylvia out of Affliction 'Trilogy' against Paul Buentello

It's been a tough month for former UFC Heavyweight Champions.
Just as Andrei Arlovski had his boxing debut postponed after being knocked out by Brett Rogers on June 6, fellow Zuffa refugee Tim Sylvia has been scratched from his August 1 Affliction bout against Paul Buentello courtesy of a Ray Mercer knockout last Saturday (June 13).
Affliction Veep Tom Atencio (courtesy of MMA Fanhouse):
"It's his second knockout in a row, and I don't want to take a chance on anything. The fight is less than 60 days away."
"The Maine-iac" stunned the Birmingham, Ala., crowd on Friday with a scale-busting weight of 310 pounds at the weigh-ins for his MMA-turned-boxing-turned-MMA fight against former pugilist powerhouse Ray Mercer.
It only took 10 seconds for "Merciless" to flatten his corpulent counterpart the following night.
Sylvia had been on the shelf since getting steamrolled by Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction "Banned" in July 2008. That’s more than a year of inactivity, which along with his weight, could be have been a factor in Saturday's fight.
The unsanctioned bout puts Sylvia on a three-fight losing skid. The former UFC headliner has now dropped four of his last five contests. He’ll need all the help he can get to ensure that he breaks out of his slump sooner rather than later.
It just won't be against "The Headhunter."
Buentello was last seen using Kiril Sidelnikov’s face as a human punching bag for almost three full rounds at Affliction 2: "Day of Reckoning" earlier this year. He went on to eventually score a late third round technical knockout over the Russian Sambo specialist, who later tested positive for having banned substances in his system after the match.
A search for Sylvia's replacement is expected to be underway shortly.
Affliction 3: "Trilogy" will feature a main event between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and top-ranked division player, Josh Barnett. Former Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi is also expected to make his fighting debut on American shores.

Looks like a Fedor knock out leaves his victims talentless. He might as well eat thier hearts in the middle of the octagon after he defeats them.

I swear Fedor sucks the soul out of his opponents!
they might as well have Arlovski vs. Buentello 2. Arlovski lost 2 in a row, he isnt ABOVE fighting the headhunter at this point in his career. We got robbed out of their 1st fight cause Buentello buckled after like 5 seconds…so might as well let em rematch! Im sure Arlovski will be cleared by then!
Fight announcement*

I would love to see GOmi vs. Din tHomas at Affliction 3
by JOhn G on Jun 15, 2009 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Din can’t handle Showtime on the ground. If his knees don’t buckle on him, javier is subbing him. Gomi would absolutely trash din. I like the duffee vs Russow fight. Gotta go with Duffee for now.

I don’t think Tim will ever be on another Affliction or UFC card again. It is just too embarrassing to have a guy who got killed in 10 seconds, by a 50 year old Mercer, representing your company.

I’m not sure that Javier, will sub Din!
Din’s got some slick BJJ too.
I also heard that he’s suppose to wrestle a Mexico Luchador soon!

Tim Sylvia was talentless when he stepped into the ring w/ Fedor.
by LJ on Jun 15, 2009 4:37 PM EDT up reply actions
No doubt. Now, people are acting like Timmy was some kind of prodigy until he got in the ring with Fedor. Back then, it was Timmy’s a can, Timmy’s overrated, etc etc. I love Fedor, but geeze guys, it’s like after every fight, we find some reason to link it to Fedor. Sean Sherk loses to BJ Penn, and it’s because Fedor farted somewhere in Hawaii, and BJ happened to pass through his lingering “presence”
Seriously, before everyone starts going ape nuts on me, let me say once more, Fedor is arguably the best P4P fighter mma has ever seen. He may prove to falter in his waining days but until then, he is the man.
So all I’m saying is, it’s getting kinda creepy in here.

Tim’s next fight is the fat ass that Ken Shamrock stooped down to fight couple months ago
by fightfan on Jun 15, 2009 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions
it wasn’t his weight or that he didn’t take this fight serious that lost it for him, mercer would beat him in a stand up fight just about everytime.i said from day one that age is the only thing that would lose this fight for ray and in 9 seconds he didn’t let that play a factor.
by roy on Jun 15, 2009 3:31 PM EDT reply actions
I think the fact that Tim obviously didn’t take this fight seriously played a factor. Just as it played a factor with Arvloski/Rogers. I think if either of them would have come in with a smidgen of humility or gameplan things would be different. That being said, I agree with you that in a boxing match Tim loses anyway. Just like Anderson Silva would lose to Roy Jones Jr. even though in any real life fight or an MMA match Silva would destroy Jones.
by wAyNe on Jun 15, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
i said in a boxing match ray wins, in another mma you would see tim shoot for the first time in his career.aa was stupid the one way rogers could win and aa not ready for it? aa will be bacr he is a great fighter, tim i am not so sure of.
by roy on Jun 15, 2009 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions
how the mighty have fallen, but i doubt that timmy would have made weight for affliction 3 any way, wait, does affliction have a weight limit for HW?
by Blazy J on Jun 15, 2009 3:36 PM EDT reply actions
i was thinking the same thing, affliction is like a month and a half away would he even of made weight?

That’s my favorite diet!!! It works everytime!!!!
by Dragon on Jun 15, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
This shows why Dana insists that fighters don’t fight in any other promotion. Timmy and AA are now both out of their next matches thanks to things not going to plan.
Tim should change his name to Tim “Timber” Sylva! hahaha. I actually feel sorry for AA for some reason.

I think it’s just dumb for a top fighter to take fights like this. Only bad can come of it. If you win so what. You’ve proven nothing. If you lose you are overrated, washed up, have a glass chin, etc.
by wAyNe on Jun 15, 2009 3:41 PM EDT reply actions
He was the UFC HW champ two short years ago. Speaks to the weakness of the HW division.

I wonder if he still feels he should make more than Brock Lesner
by el jefe on Jun 15, 2009 3:45 PM EDT reply actions
This fight and the rogers fight prove not that fedor is so great but that Afflictions supposedly stacked heavyweight division wasn’t stacked in the first place. Just a bunch of Douche Bags who couldn’t cut it in the UFC. At least now I know there is a god having both Arlovski and Sylvia get beat down so quickly is the greatest retribution I could imagine for there pathetic performances in the UFC.

Never liked Sylvia, never will. He had 0 ground game, and any one who thinks his striking was anything to admire needs some serious help. Flat footed, and SLOW. He had height, that was all he had.
He will not come back from this – if the UFC does decide to resign him, he will never fight for the title again, his time has come and gone.
by SiamMMA on Jun 16, 2009 12:57 AM EDT reply actions
And the loser iiiiiiiissssssssssssssssssss , the most boring, the guy with noooooooooooooooooo ground game, the guy you all love to hate, it s the one, the only ( thank god ) Tim “i’ll just push you up against the fence to win this fight” sylvia !! and the crowd goes ……. silent ?
