UFC Quick Quote: Marcus Davis 'didn't lose' to Dan Hardy at UFC 99

"He got totally outwrestled in the first round -- he was on his back the whole time. Second round he got outgrappled and outwrestled. That third round he lost three minutes and 15 or 20 seconds of the round -- I had it booked in my head. And then he comes on and cuts me, frustrates me and wins that last round [in the final two minutes]. I knew that it was close, but I knew I had those first two rounds in the bag.... I believe that is the first time I went to decision besides the Swick fight, which I lost, too. I did lose that fight. This fight I didn't lose. To lose to him makes it even worse. It was a fight that I should have been able to finish. It didn't have anything to do with him getting in my head or whatever. Things just happened in the fight and I wasn't able to finish. But that's the fight game."
-- A disappointed Marcus Davis talks about his split decision loss to bitter enemy, Dan Hardy, at UFC 99: "The Comeback" from the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. "The Irish Hand Grenade" appeared to control most of the fight; however, he did get dropped on at least two occasions and sustained a major cut to the bridge of his nose in the final minutes of the third round. Did the blood sway the judges decisions or did "The Outlaw" really do enough to win the fight?

Shut your mouth and go away Marcus, your a steroid infested sore loser. Anyone who watched the fight could clearly see that you lost a close decision. He did not just cut you, he broke your nose, cut you & closed your left eye and half of your head. Dude you looked like you got beaten with a baseball bat. You lost, shake his hand and go away you pathetic poor sport!!!!!!! FAKE IRISHMAN LOL!!!!!!!!!

I hope you have something to back up that he took steroids. I’ve never heard anything about that ever and it didn’t come up on google

just because marcus is ripped doesn’t mean the dude’s on steroids. and has much as i wanted him to ktfo hardy, there’s no way he won that fight. he lost fairly squarely.

Yeah that was just an A-hole statement by that guy.
Fightmetric.com released its report on this fight. They had Hardy with a higher overall score, but gave Davis the edge in rounds 1 and 3. So according to the 10-point must system, they have Davis winning. If you use PRIDE judging, Hardy wins

Direct from Dan @ http://www.cagewarriors.com/article.329.htm
Firstly I would like to thank everyone for their support over the past few weeks, all of the messages go a long way to keeping you motivated when training camp is tough. My team, as always, did a great job in getting me ready for UFC 99 and I cant thank them enough. Nathan Leverton, Owen Comrie, Jim Wallhead and all the boys at Rough House. Ollie Richardson and Sonny Dholakia, for getting me in shape. My guys in LA, Eddie Bravo and the 10th Planet guys, Freddie Roach and the Wildcard gym, Shawn Guttridge and all the Legends MMA guys.
My family and Elizabeth, thank you for putting up with me and always showing their love and support. To all of my fans, particularly the ‘Party Hardy’ guys for the chaos they caused! To my sponsors for investing in me and helping me train full time and compete at the top level, and to the UFC for giving me the opportunity to live my dream.
I would also like the thank Marcus, his team and all of his fans. Sure, there is no love lost between us, but he is one tough dude. There is something about trading punches for fifteen minutes that makes you respect a guy. I know he isn’t happy with the fight and still angry at the things said beforehand, that is understandable. It was a close fight and he was in the shape of his life for it, respect for that.
There has been a lot of talk on the forums since the fight and its great to see so many people enjoyed the show. He is getting a lot of heat for his actions after the fight, but remember he has put on eleven solid performances in the UFC now and deserves everyone’s respect.
Again, thanks to everyone, especially the fans. I look forward to fighting for you again.

i dont have a huge problem with the decision.
i think its similar to jamie varner/cerrone, except it went the other way.
i mean dan hardy almost killed marcus davis, and if the fight had gone on with no time limit he would of killed him. judges are starting to move further away from positional control as the main factor in judging fights, kind of like kampman/condit.
i thought condit won the fight personally.
by mike on Jun 14, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How did he almost kill him? I swear people see blood or a cut and they think that person got destroyed. He has had problems with scar tissue on his face before. I think he should have won that fight. If you watched the other decisions that night its a testament to the poor judge’s decisions. I mean, Rich Franklin won by UNANIMOUS DECISION? That’s fuckin ridiculous. Or how about the Spencer Fisher/Caol Uno fight? Fisher, unanimous? dude…those judges were on drugs. Clearly they were deciding incorrectly that entire night and I think they were glazed over by Marcus’ face. He won that fight.

It could have gone either way, I thought Davis landed more punches and controlled fight the most. However it was Hardy who dealt most significant damage. Just depends how judges look at it.
by Hooner on Jun 14, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
When judging a FIGHT, damage inflicted has to be the No. 1 scoring criterion. The whole point of a FIGHT is to beat up your opponent, not control position. Hardy beat the crap out of Davis. Just because Davis humped from the top for a substantial amount of time does not mean he won the FIGHT.
by PW on Jun 14, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I gotta agree with PW. Even though you may be shoving them up against the cage or something doesnt mean you are hurting him. Are you in a more dominating position? Yes. Are you hurting anyone? no. Dan Hardy hurt him pretty good on several different occasions. I think when you take someone down you that it only counts half way cause you need to actually do something when youre down there.
by c-war on Jun 14, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Damage inflicted can’t be the number 1 criterion of who wins a fight. If that was the case, then everyone would just be throwing elbows on the ground because they cut, and not attempting any submissions, which could actually finish a fight, because if a sub is escaped, you didn’t do any damage. Also, look at Davis’s face before the fight. He has a ton of scar tissue, while Hardy doesn’t really have any. Guys like Forrest can completely dominate a fight, but still look bad at the end because they cut easy. I don’t think position should be the top criterion either, but more a totality of everything done in a fight. For some reason it seems like if someone gets a couple of near subs, they never get any credit for it.
As for the fight, I wish we could get more 10-10 rounds, because that was a pretty even fight to me, and could have easily been a draw.
by naturalshadow on Jun 14, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It’s impossible to accurately measure “damage.” Really, you can’t measure damage… you can only measure perceived damage. Naturalshadow has it right. If this was the case, nobody would do body blows or subs. And god forbid a fighter makes bad faces when he gets hit because he would show the judges that he is receiving damage. So by measuring damage, you’d only be measuring bruises, swelling, blood loss, winces of pain, knock downs…
Here’s an example: If fighter A lands only one blow in three rounds and creates a mouse on fighter B’s eye. And fighter B is close to finishing the fight several times in each round via submission…. according to your rule, fighter A would win. If damage is the #1 criteria, then MMA would turn into kickboxing.
Plus, even if we agree with you about damage being the #1 criteria in a fight, MMA is a sport and not a fight. Just like boxing isn’t fighting…
by rhv on Jun 14, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Without watching the fight, if you looked at Davis and looked at Hardy, which one would you think won the fight? And I never said damage should be the only judging criterion, just the most important. And of course fighters throw elbows and will continue to do so. They hurt, they cause cuts, which can stop fights, and they can lead to TKOs, which also stop fights. The only fighters who think positioning is the most important aspect of a fight are the lay-n-pray guys. There are a lot of things about judging that should be changed (credit for subs and attacking from the bottom, credit for reversing a takedown or standing back up without taking damage), but at the end of the day it’s two guys fighting, and the one who beats the other up the most should win if it’s not stopped.
by PW on Jun 14, 2009 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
well hurting your opponent is the most important and winning the fight (wrestling is not fighting) I hate when guys overcommit to takedowns just because getting a silly takedown scores more than anything else.. just look at Jon Fitch in his win over Diego, dude got f’in domintaed every minute of the fight and he won because he got takedowns and stayed on top without doing anything but escaping and getting caught in sub attempts!

pw mercus davis has serious scar tissue. looks mean nothing or the score cards. how the fight is fought and who controles the fight or who imposes their will or fights their fight should be the winner. ok if you hump a guy for 4 minutes and lose the stand up for another minute maybe you get the round.

Dan Hardy impressed me even though I wanted Davis to win. He’s well spoken and a gracious winner. I feel sorry for Davis but after all his talk about being so amped and ready to smash Hardy’s face in, it somehow made it seem more probable he would lose. Oh well. Decisions suck!
I reckon they should have ten judges so that it’s not based on just ONE more opinion when two judges have contrary views. When that’s the case and it’s up to just one other person’s arbitrary decision, it puts the result too much on just plain luck.
More judges or a whole new system. It’s such a flaw to leave the result in the hands of three people. If there is doubt it should be a draw or at least there should be draws more often.

It was close, wouldn’t have a problem if it went either way. Shows neither of them are good enough to ever make top 10. Hardy is more dangeous on his feet than I thought but has zero ground game especially from his back.

You better keep Swick and Fitch away from Hardy too coz both those two would destroy him!

im with you on the whole draw tip, i said to my friends last night that this is the type of fight that should be ruled a draw, because like it or not davis was in control for most of the fight, yet got the more serious damage done to him. the only way to get a draw is for a fighter to win two rounds and get a point taken away (not really a draw is it). i also think condit kampman could of been a draw, as well as hendo vs rampage

I had to watch the late show (10 pm) last night. I didn’t get any spoilers and haven’t read any comments. Here are my thought on the “night of decisions.”
Uno, Davis and Wand all won their fights. A cut and some blood does not mean you lost. Davis controlled Hardy for the majority of the fight. Uno worked ground game and take downs or most of the fight, and wand lost a close fight that I feel he won rounds 2 and 3 of.
Cro cop is done!
The only other thing I got is Cain isn’t ready for top tier opponents. He couldn’t hang with Kongo on the feet so he controlled him on the ground and couldn’t finish. I’m no Kongo fan, but everyone on here realizes any HW can take Kongo down and win! Is Kongo that dumb, he tries to clinch instead of going in for the win on the feet.
overall, I was entertained, actually had to up my ppv credit limit of 200 for the month to have this go through, it was worth it!
by kevin on Jun 14, 2009 10:44 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Hardy undoubtably won the fight in my eyes.
Uno/Fisher fight should have been ruled a draw. Is it really fair to say that anyone won that fight? I like technical fights but even I was bored by that fight. it was easily one of the most lackluster ppv main card fights of the year!
I also thought that wanderlei should have been awarded the decision, but it was a very close fight, and I dont have a problem with either of those guys being awarded the win.
Cain didnt really impress me either. I was impressed at how he would slam kongo around like a rag doll, but his G n P was underwhelming. I am a Kongo fan, but like Kevin said, he is just STUPID!!! All last night proved was that Cain has a good chin, and could out wrestle Kongo. NO surprise here!
by john on Jun 14, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was very frustrated with Kongo last night. He ALMOST finished the fight 3 times. But, for the other 14 1/2 minutes, he was controlled by Velasquez.
I would say that the control wasn’t so one sided, but I think that I would have given the decision to Davis as he controlled the action more. BUT, Hardy had a more devasting attack. Could have gone either way.
Judges must be worn out after UFC 99, damn near the whole event went to decisions. Except Mirko “Eye Poke”.
by Freddy on Jun 14, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I wasn’t overly impressed with Cain either, anyone with a shred of submission skill would have finished Kongo last night, the amount of times he left his limbs and neck exposed was stupid.
I thought his GnP although relentless was pretty weak, he landed an awful lot of shots, none with any real power.
Most disturbing part was how he thought he could stand and trade with Kongo even after the scare in the first round, that was just stupid and was lucky Kongo never punished him for it.
Shows Kongo’s done in the UFC anyway thankfully. If by some miracle he managed to get a shot at Lesnar or Carwin the same thing would happen again only worse, until he learns even some basic td defence or ground game.

I couldn’t agree more. The scoring is based on effective striking, grappling and octagon control. Davis gets the edge on the grappling and octagon control. I’d give the edge in striking to Hardy. I had the fight 29-28 for Davis. Rounds 1 and 2 to Davis and the third to Hardy.

iMO, Hardy won that fight. NO question about it! Im happy that the judges didnt let Davis wrestle his way to a win. This is a FIGHT, most important thing should be damage inflicted. It was a close fight, but Hardy inflicted about 3 times more damage than Davis….so in the end, the right man won the fight. am I the only one fed up with Marcus Davis? Contrary to what he believes, he just isnt an exciting fighter, and skill wise, he is nothing special. His best attribute is that he is an overall tough guy…He will NEVER crack the top 10! THe fight was just last night, and I already forgot EVERYTHING that Davis did…that should tell you how week of a performance it was…. I doubt anyone will remember what Davis did, but Im pretty sure NO ONE is forgetting about the Devestating Knee or the Brutal elbows that Hardy landed FLUSH!!! Great performance, and a great win for the outlaw.
YOU Fockers need to start showing the OUTLAW some love around here.
Im surprised that Paul Kelly couldnt finish:
Roli “Jesus Christ with a dollar store black belt” Delgado! lol
Some of you guys might remember my gambling strategy for last nights event. I bet on all the underdogs on the main card with the exception of Al-Turk…Only underdog that I picked right on the main card was Hardy. Lucky for me, I bet $75 on him, but only bet $20 on the other dogs….tHat win alone won me money on the main card as a whole….The second part of my strategy was to bet on all the Brits STRAIGHT, and throw in a bunch of parlays involving the brits and struve….Like I promised, all the BRITISH FIGHTERS won….all in all, I lost 4 bets last night, but still managed to win good money on the event!
WAR JOHN! lol

Exactly, Hardy inflicted way more damage. If you just walked in at the end of the fight and saw both fighters you’d say that Hardy definitely won and Marcus got his ass kicked. It’s not good enough to just try to wrestle to the win without dishing out any telling g’n’p.
His standup is overrated and to think otherwise is silly.

“Damage Inflicted” isn’t part of the judging criteria. I’m not disagreeing, just playing devils advocate. One of the many reasons that judging MMA is really tough.
by Freddy on Jun 14, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well regardless of damage I still had Hardy sneaking it.
Damage should be part of the criteria I think. It’s a fight. Wrestlers would be less inclined to lay ‘n’ pray then.

If I ruled the world: mma fights will be based soley on damage inflicted…if Damage is a draw then they should use grappling, agression, and Octagon control to break the tie!

Completely agree John. It’s a freaking fight, for God’s sake. If scoring a fight based on doing damage means a few dry-humping wrestlers end up having to either change their style or go get real jobs then so be it.
by PW on Jun 15, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well I think he hurt Marcus more than Marcus hurt him. I just wasn’t impressed by him and I thought Hardy just pipped it at the end. Marcus had a few sub attempts off his back but they weren’t really close despite Rogan’s enthusiasm. He failed to deliver any real g’n’p too. When the tables were turned Hardy split him open and he dropped him too. I actually had Davis as part of accumulator so I think I’m pretty unbiased when I say I think Hardy edged it.
I suppose a fight can be a very subjective thing sometimes.

There are rules in MMA, and there are rules in judging MMA as well. Everyone knows the rules. “Damage Inflicted” isn’t the main factor in scoring. Whether it should or shouldn’t be, is another story. But the goal is to win (just like any other sport), and octagon control, as well as takedowns score points. Fighters exploit the rules in their gameplans (just like any smart athlete in any sport does). The goal for many fighters is to win, which you can’t fault them for, since this is their career and their bankroll.
On a sidenote, Hardy won the fight regardless. The rounds were close, and I don’t see how either fighter could have known 100% that the first 2 rounds were in the bag for them. Either Marcus has a poor assessment of the fighting taking place, or his corner served him a huge injustice in telling him he definitely won the first two rounds heading into the 3rd.

No, this is not a FIGHT as you like to say. It is an mma “fight”, it has rules. I would love to see mma some day in the olympics, but have yet to see a sport that has such a tough time coming up with a clear and decisive map of victory. You watch one ppv, the judges seem to go by who won each round as though it was an individual fight. Going by who won based on damage. Then the next ppv the judges award wins based on control and position. I have friends that don’t follow mma but watch ppv’s on a near regular basis that will say, the other ppv the guy did the same thing and won or lost. MMA needs to get its judging shit together so fighters and fans know what the f constitutes a consistent victory. The system will never be perfect, but last night was a great example of mma fights, and not a great display for the sport.
Congrats on the Hardy pick. It made me some nice cheddar as well.

Hardy won and Wanderlei lost. No doubt about either one, and you guys know I was really pulling for Wand. Silva ate way more shots and was hurt more times than Rich. He was getting picked apart most of the fight. With Wanderlei’s short reach he has to capitalize when he eats shots to get inside and land his own… but he let Rich off the hook. The fight went the way I thought it would… except Wand just missed the killing blows when he had Rich hurt.
It proves Wand is still relevant but also proves he isn’t the same fighter he was a few years ago. If he was a hair faster and hit like the Pride Wanderlei, that fight is over and his hand is raised.
As for Hardy, he dominated the stand-up like I knew he would, and Davis did no damage on the ground. Hardy’s fight for sure, but he needs to work on his ground game to hang with the big boys.

One poblem with these theories.. UFC doesnt score on damage inflicted, nor should they. Davis outclassed him on the ground, both on top and bottom, and thats where the majority of the fight was spent.
Be rea guys, the judges saw the cut and were like. “yup that guy looks beat up” and Hardy got the nod. Decisions are my favorite outcome of a fight, i like to see the fight actually be a fight and go all the way. Davis just got jewed outa this one.
Good fight. Hardy needs work off his back BADLY. and might want to try passing guard.
by masters on Jun 14, 2009 11:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s not about the cut, remember the judges are scoring round by round. Hardy knocked Davis down twice in the first 2 rounds, rocked him with that elbow in the third(Davis could barely get up) and won the third anyway with that takedown and strikes to finish the round. It was close but 2 rounds to 1 for Hardy imo. Also, every website that was scoring it, scored it for Hardy too. Quit crying Marcus.

Yahoo actually had it for Davis. Really that one big elbow that busted Davis’ nose won Hardy the fight because he was definitely losing that final round up to that point. Once Davis’ nose started pumping blood and the doctor had to take a look at it I think the blood swayed two of the judges towards Hardy.
Really it was damn close though. Davis looked worse afterwards thanks to his busted nose but Davis generally controlled more of the action during the fight.

I dont agree with the damaged inflicted theory cuz if that was the case bj penn would have been awarded tha fight against gsp the first one of course , I wont comment about this particular fight I havent watched it yet

A lot of people think it should have gone to BJ.

I have no idea how he thought he won that fight!

It was a good fight…that’s all that matters. Davis took things a little too personally; but he fought well despite that. Hardy was just a little better last night. It would be great to see a rematch some time in the future.

Why would it be great to see a rematch? Theres plenty of other fighters in WW to make some good fights.
They should both get back to training and move onto their next opponents.

Im not a fan of either guy but I think Marcus got robbed, along with Uno!

funny how davis struggled to get to his feet and mark said “he’s ok”. i love how rogan made it a point to mention that. the judges saw him struggling to keep balance. davis won the 1st rd and hardy won the rest. good call by the judges.

I agree Marcus controlled Dan on the ground, but couldn’t inflict any damage.this ain’t a wrestling match its mma FIGHT.Dan tort Marcus a lesson on the feet and rocked him badly twice in the fight, and when Dan got on top opened Marcus up with a vicious elbow. Great show from the Brit!!!

I have to say I was very impressed with Hardy, especially his post-fight interview. I couldn’t stand the guy before this fight, but he was gracious in victory and gave Marcus props for being so tough. I am fan of Davis too, but he acted like a baby last night and like it or not…HE LOST!!! BTW, Hardy has vicious elbows!!!! wow

Respect level for davis went down the shitter after yesterday. Hardy owned him.
by Slap Nuts on Jun 14, 2009 2:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Pretty much. Seeing Davis do everything he could to hump Hardy was pretty funny. And he really wanted nothing to do with the stand-up, interestingly enough.
by rbk on Jun 14, 2009 6:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Shouldn’t be that surprising. He promised a war with Lytle and failed to deliver. For all the talk about Davis being a pro boxer, people forget that he is a failed boxer who got handled, which is why he’s in MMA in the first place. He never fights top competition (Swick is the best WW he’s faced) and while he has big power, his hand speed and timing suck.

I scored it for Hardy. Plus, Davis is obviously on the juice. He didn’t deserve to win.

I watched UFC 99 with 3 other people. All of us thought Hardy won it 2 rounds to 1. Davis needs to get over it. He lost, and he shouldnt get a rematch.

1. Dont leave it to the judges.
2. He was beat up bad.
3. At least shake the guys hand. You dont have to be friends, but hes supposed to be professional (as he claims) which means you leave the bad blood in the cage.
4. Im bored of people giving excuse why they lost. The judges said you did. end of.

all of you try fighting and losing to someone that talked shit about you for two months and see how you handle it, but your all keyboard warriors so that wont EVER happen

I think it was Bisping, or Forrest Griffin or someone who said “never hate your opponent, because what happens if you lose?”
Its his own fault for falling into Hardy’s silly trap.

Guys trash each other trying to hype fights all the time and when the fight is over 99.9% of the time they congradulate each other after the fight, even Huhges and Sera had a little moment in there after there fight. Marcus is just a sore loser, maybe he couldnt contain his R&%D Rage.

Very rarely are you going to come out of a fight looking the like the fake irish-man did and win. All of that blood definitely influences the judges.
by Slap Nuts on Jun 14, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
As much as I was pulling for Davis, I think Hardy was a little bit better and it’s always telling to me when one guy looks beat up and the other guy barely has a scratch. Davis with his boxing history and propensity to get cut starts swelling up even before he enters the ring…..hopefully judges don’t give too much weight to the fighters appearance after the battle. A little disappointed in the lack of class displayed by Davis after the fight and I suspect he let emotion get the best of him which hampered his performance. It’s ok to be mad at the judges but Hardy was gracious and really was only hyping the fight prior. He should have full respect with the way Hardy battled him…..certainly a lot more than he gave him credit for going in. By the way, the photoshop images that somebody did of Davis were hilarious…sorry Marcus I found them pretty funny.

Also, I’d like to see some proof before some dumbass makes the steroids comment about a fighter. I’ve heard nothing of this with Davis and he looked in phenomenal condition….albeit a product of hard work being motivated to fight the Outlaw.

Did you watch the season of TUF that he was on?? Small, skinny, weak nice guy that couldnt beat his way out of a wet paper bag. Then he comes back a year later looking like the Terminater and KO’S everyone he fights, not to mention the bad attitude and all the BACKNE all over his shoulders and back. He looked even more jacked up for this fight than his last few. If I had to put money on it I would say he has dabbled in the juice!!
by Spyder on Jun 15, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was 3 1/2 years ago when he had 5 MMA bouts under his belt. Now with 21 or so fights, he obviously has dedicated himself to his career which has included heavy weight training and building strength to deal with ground fighting he didn’t have as a boxer. Doesn’t mean he’s juicing because he’s bigger and more muscular now.

hardy won fair and square, davies is a really bad loser. how can u claim to win a fight when you try and lie on someone for 3 rounds. considering he is called the irish hand grenade, he didnt want to stand and swing with hardy, he should be called the irish land mine cause he is always on the floor.

Great fight, great evening.
In my opinion this was one of the more interesting fights. The other main events were more or less lame. Nevertheless, the evening was fanstatic, great music, great light show, the crowd freaked out. Loved it :-)

“It’s not wrestling, it’s a fight.”
Stupid. It is an MMA match, and wrestling is a martial art. I hate lay and pray, but with wrestling they take octagon control. Nough said.
Davis and Wanderlei both got robbed imo.

not trying to be an ass but in what way did wand win that? I saw franklin picking him apart for most of the fight. I had it 29-28 to rich
