Tweet! Tweet! Dana White confident UFC 99 will be on television

Starting with UFC 80 back on January 19, 2008, the Ultimate Fighting Championship struck a deal with international sports broadcaster Setanta Sports to bring the UFC to millions of homes in the United Kingdom.
Setanta operates in Great Britain, Ireland, Luxembourg, the United States, Canada and Australia and provides premium sports television channels on a subscription basis, including a multi-year deal with Zuffa.
Unfortunately the dissolution of some of its English Premier League rights left Setanta strapped for cash and on the prowl for some emergency funding. A complete and utter collapse in operations -- which would effectively blackout any and all UFC programming in the UK, had been reported as inevitable.
In response, Setanta recently released a statement regarding their current state of affairs.
As has been widely reported in various media channels, the management of Setanta Sports is in the process of attempting to secure the future of the business. The company has not gone into administration. All our channels are still broadcasting across all platforms and our subscribers can continue to enjoy our programming. However, in the current circumstances, we have decided to suspend temporarily the acceptance of new subscriptions...
With Setanta's future seemingly on the brink, the possibility existed that Saturday's UFC 99 event from Cologne, Germany, would not be broadcast to Setanta subscribers, effectively defeating the purpose of Zuffa's Europe expansion.
UFC President Dana White is already in Germany attempting to secure a guaranteed broadcast from Setanta for this Saturday (June 13) and if he can't, then perhaps with the Bravo network, home to UFC programming prior to the deal with Setanta.
Dana Tweets:
"Hang tight, we will be on TV. Either Setanta or Bravo. We are working on it."
I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that the UFC will remain on television in the UK even if the Setanta deal eventually dissolves. With the popularity of MMA increasing (especially in light of the 'US vs. UK' TUF format) and two other networks to consider (Sky and Bravo), I for one will remain optimistic.
Stay tuned.

How about actually buying the PPV and not being cheap?
by Goomba on Jun 11, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Its not possible to BUY a PPV over here in the UK as they are given to us for free (sort of) via Setanta sports (a subscription sports channel) which is why we would be so pissed off if this deal actually failed.

u can buy it online but its not the same as watching it on a big screen, but having said that theirs a wire u can buy that make it possible to hook it up the big screen via p.c thats what i used to do

silly to pay for UFC on the internet, when it’s downloadable and streamable everywhere…
by RoB on Jun 11, 2009 9:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Go to a bar and watch it if you are too cheap to pay for the PPV yourself.

Well if he’s from the UK, and Setanta don’t broadcast it’s not on TV or PPV.

There would be no bars open from 3-6am in the morning showing it now would there?!?!?

Streaming video sucks ass. Plus you should pay for it; the fighters won’t have decent pay until cheap asses start paying to watch them entertain.

it wont have that much of an effect if they do it cos loads of folk do it and ufc still manange to pull in millions of dollars each ppv

Setanta looks doomed so hopefully they’ll last past this weekend and the UFC can find another channel. Whilst I’ve been lucky because I get Setanta for no extra chargre from my Virgin TV package I haven’t been very impressed with their coverage (they’ve missed out fights and interviews).
I liked Bravo’s coverage, even though it was shown on tape delay, and Sky should do a decent job if they get the rights, but they didn’t treat Cage Rage very well and looked for a cheap way out of their contract with them.
I’ve been annoyed by all of the coverage on Setanta as not once have I seen the UFC mentioned in these articles, so I’ve been left out of the loop. Apparently viewers of PGA golf are more important than MMA fans.

The big difference is I wanna watch it live though and only Setanta have provided that. For me that is much more important than any interviews that I could watch later anyway. Its all about the fights and seeing them as it happens.
This is real shitty news. I had no idea they were doing this badly. I hope Sky dont get it but I guess its better than noone at all.
P.S F*CK Rupert Murdoch!

“(they’ve missed out fights and interviews).”
what fights? they miss the odd interview because of adverts…to pay for people like you who dont pay for the channel!

Do you just like to moan? Golf is much for popular than MMA, like it or not! In fact, its so popular and important (to Setanta) they have their own golfing channel! I’m in no way (even in the slightest bit) surprized Setanta have commented on golf because its a major part of their tv package.

Look on the brightside guys, they might put it on Sky for free and save us £15 a month!
Or back to Bravo??
by Nick J on Jun 11, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hopefully Sky Sports, I would happily do PPV for UFC. Bravo was awful, it was shown the night after & you could guess if the main event was going to a decision if they started showing it with an hour left of programming.

It’s part of my package, if Setanta didn’t want me to watch for free then they shouldn’t have struck a deal with Virgin. And golf is the most boring sport to watch live, give me the UFC and NRL over that anyday.

I’m slightly more optimistic now. They tried to grow way too fast. Not so easy taking on the giant that is BSkyB.
On another note, what about Ronaldo! I’m disappointed.

£80 million for any player, no matter how good, is sickening. Real have gone back to their old galactico ways and I don’t see this doing any good for football. Considering we are in a global economic recession, spending £135 million on a couple of football players is sickening and is making me feel even more disillusioned with the sport.

Yeah its crazy money hey! Thing is the premier league sides are gonna get blitzed in the champions league next year now!
Ronaldo is irriplacable, they are talking about Ribery for 40m but still no where near the class.

Okay, time for an assassination lol.

yeah stay out of nigeria for a few days if possible!
there was life at old trafford before ronnie and there will be life at ot after, the doom-mongers all said the same thing after cantona left & beckham left! as for ribbery he’s not worth £4m let alone £40m he is playing in a sub-standard league, not many players from german, dutch leagues can make the transition to the premiership. i for one hopes fergie doesn’t go after him as munich will hold united to ransom knowing they have £80m in their pockets

great day, cause I’m not a United fan! =)
Ronaldo might be the most famous athlete in the world right now, he just made out with Paris Hilton at a nightclub in LA too!

GO TO SKY SPORTS!
move to sky sports = MMA fans moving to sky sports + UFC getting more people to see MMA = more

i would not be adverse to the idea of the ufc going to sky sports and maybe tuf going to sky sports one. financially it would seem more lucrative to zuffa and it would also open the door to new fans or people who don’t subscribe to setanta (only 1.2 million homes in the uk have setanta)

Some of you american dickh34ds don’t have a clue! I would gladly goto a bar and watch the ufc fights but you find me a bar near my home that even shows boxing let alone a UFC event! Especially at 3am in the morning!
I would gladly pay for ppvs if they was offered, I used to buy WWE events as a kid so theres no difference!
Pull your head out your arses for once and realise not every one is the same!
by Catalyst11 on Jun 11, 2009 2:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Watching UFC at a bar at 3am would be pretty sweet but you’re right some American fans don’t understand that the time zone differences prevent us from being able to do the same things that they do.
Hopefully I can find 99 at a bar in Ibiza or Setanta will sort themselves out so I can tape it. Otherwise I’ll have to rely on the Internet when I get back, which is a pity as I was looking forward to this card.

Yes haha. American culture and British culture are TOTALLY different. For example, we do not have a PPV culture here in UK. PPV is worth absolutely nothing unless, for some strange reason, your name is Ricky Hatton.
We do not get Setanta for free. It is roughly £12 a month, that’s £144 a year for something at 3am in the morning. Would like to see some Americans pay that when they say “quit your moaning” (that was not directed at someone above btw, just a lot of Americans say that).
We do not have sports at bars here either, unless it is football or england rugby.
And we have to pay a television fee which is much higher than in America I thought
by the way, I was wondering, in America can you live off benefits? Someone I know said they dont have benefits in America and it seemed strange. In Britain 30% of all people live on benefits for an income (taxpayer’s money)

I have the cards live on sentanta (part of my virgin package) and then rewatched via posted files and to be honest I have not seen much differnce.
I am praying that sky do not get hold of it, they are well know for using their own production company and hacking feeds to pieces, I am sure UFC wants more control on what is shown compared to what sky wants to do. Plus no doubt they will move the cards to PPV and I don’t know if they will pick up TUF.
Bravo coverage was sketchy at best, plus showing the events on tape delay the day after sucked.
I am really frigging annoyed as I have my UFC 100 party all lined up and now no idea if we are going to get to see it live.
by Casual fan on Jun 11, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t want sky to get hold of it, what if they get bored of it or the viewing figures fall like with cage rage?? The lame excuse to get out of that contract was laughable, didn’t a fighter use the f word at like 10 o’clock at night? ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo. Tune in at three o’clock in the afternoon to the football and you can see any one of those overpaid nancy’s calling the ref all the names under the sun, but that’s acceptable, apparently.
My fear is if Sky get hold of it they start doing PPV’s like they have with all the wrestling shows. They did PPV once with the “brawl at the Albert Hall” show, don’t know how successful that was.
I think it’s a piss take charging us £16 for PPV’s when they’re shown at 3 in the morning. I wuldn’t have a problem if it was prime time at 9 o’clock or whatever. I hope Bravo get it back, for all their faults, they didn’t have the cheek to charge us and you know they’d be in it long term.

Obviously im UK, and I subscribe to Setanta just for UFC stuff. So i will be gutted if Setanta go under. I really hope it doesnt go to Brave, cus the fight nights were bloody AWFUL on Bravo before the switch. Imagaine adverts every 5 minutes for the entire broadcast. Thats what it was.
Hopefully Setanta will be survive, if not, please please go to Sky Sports.

Well i really am pixsed off. If they go under i will have to download it for free off the internet and it will take 1 hour to do that..If they put it on sky they should put it on the box office ppv and they cant fucx around with it there. Then put tuf back on bravo..Dont cry everybory Dana wont let us down we will have 2 tuf champs this season and he will not let us miss that american beatdown…

i wouldnt be suprised to see Virgin Media pick it up as they charge a subscription fee – which the UFC will be looking for a cut of.
I dont know if they have a specific Sports channel (as i dont have it), but adding it to channel only available to Virgin would surely improve its number of subscribers
