WEC Quick Quote: Donald Cerrone calls out Jamie Varner for having the runs

"After my fight (with James Krause) I wanted to remind people about (Jamie) Varner always getting out of the ICU. He just keeps drawing out our next fight. He needs to agree on a date so we can get it going. As a person, I can’t respect Varner anymore. For him to pull all the shit he does -- he takes the easy way out, hiding behind things and milking it as long as he can. He called timeouts in his fights against both McCullough and Franca. He pulled his shit with me. He’s always looking for a way out. Well see how he finds a way out in our next fight. I am not sure what his problem is but he thinks too highly of himself. When the shit hits the fan, Varner’s the kind of guy that would rather flight then fight. I would like to knock that fucker’s head off. Hopefully he will stand with me, but he’ll likely shoot on me, try to take me down, and lay and pray. I’ve been working on my wrestling with Rashad Evans, all the guys at Greg Jackson’s; they are forcing me to get better. Jaime ran that whole fight last time. A champion isn’t supposed to do that. Maybe it was because his hand was broken. Whatever, you just don’t run. I will be coming at him the whole time. I'm a Cowboy, it’s a way of life, it's a no quit attitude for me."

-- Donald Cerrone talks to MMAmania.com about his pending rematch with WEC lightweight champion Jamie Varner following his first round submission win over James Krause at WEC 41: "Brown vs. Faber 2" on June 7. "Cowboy" and "C-4" fought a highly competitive and controversial fight back in January with Varner winning via technical split decision. The fight was stopped prematurely in the fifth round when Cerrone grazed Varner's temple with an illegal knee while Varner was still on the ground. Varner was given time to recover, but said he was unable to continue because of vision problems. The two have been jawing back and forth ever since and WEC General Manager Reed Harris has recently confirmed that Varner vs. Cerrone II is planned for sometime this fall. Who takes it?

Cerrone will DESTROY Varner. I can’t wait for it to happen.

I support what you are saying but…. he didn’t destroy him the 1st time. I want Cerrone to win though, Jamie needs to bring back his real nickname “The Worm” and I completely believe what Cerrone is saying.

by JasonFahQ on Jun 10, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Varner controlled the 1st fight for the most part, but when Cowboy turned up the heat late, Varner was looking for an easy out. I have NO doubt he could have continued, but he punked out. Cerrone has every right to be pissed. If Varner won’t agree to a date, I say set up an interm match between Cowboy and Crunkilton or Lamas.

by Cole on Jun 11, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can’t really argue with anything Cerroni is saying. Mostly every thing Cerroni claims has merrit or some grounds for accusation. But when it all comes down to it I think Varner is the better fighter and will probibly win the rematch. But he is a total douche.

by DB on Jun 10, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cerrone has to learn one simple concept first: Head movement.

True, Varner comes off like a total jerk-off and it seems nobody likes him, but that alone isn’t ground for him to lose the rematch. He’s smarter in the cage, and he’s flat out more talented than Cowboy. I agree with Donald though, his heart is ten times the size of Varner’s which may play a factor. We’ll see, but my money is on Varner.

by MC on Jun 10, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Smarter in the cage and flat out more talented?? I disagree. This is a matchup issue. Varner is a very good boxer and a very good wrestler. Cerrone has very good MT and BJJ. Cerrone strikes in an MT style. Very upright coming straight forward with not alot of head movement. As a tall guy this is a good thing so he can use his reach advantage. The problem is that he doesn’t jab enough and leads with kicks too often. He’s gotta use his jab to keep the range and finish combos with kicks. It wouldn’t be ideal for a taller fighter to be bobbing and weaving alot. That would eliminate the height/reach advantage. If Cerrone can establish the jab and stay out of the clinch for the first 2 rounds, he’ll start to frustrate and wear down Varner. We’ve seen what happens when things start to not go in Varner’s way. I expect Jackson to have a gameplan for Cerrone this next fight that’ll end with him winning. He’s gotta stick to the gameplan, keep the distance and he puts varner away in the later rounds.

this guy looked seriously, seriously impressive in his last fight.

and jamie looked like he had just dropped a 5 pound dump in his pants after watching it.

Yeah, Cerrone takes the rematch. Training at a great camp has made him constantly improve.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 10, 2009 8:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is there any guy at Greg Jackson’s that isn’t a good fighter? I mean, there are plenty of guys who are very skilled, but not all the time it translates to a good fighter. I don’t think there is anyone who is a Greg Jackson regular that doesn’t bring it all together fight time. You got:
GSP
Shad
Nate the Great
Jardine
Cerrone
Leonard Garcia
Carwin
All of these guys bring it. IMO, Jackson’s is THE BEST MMA camp in the world.

Oh yeah, my reason for commenting was to say that Cerrone is one of my favorite WEC fighters.

by Syn on Jun 10, 2009 9:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jacson is a great coach and for the ufc fans he seems like he is the best thing out there..
But in my opinion ATT has the best camp in mma period!

Gesias Calvancante
Denis Kang
Jeff Monson
Jorge Santiago
Jorge Masvidal
Ben Saunders
Thiago Silva
Antonio Silva
Mike Brown
Alessio Sakara
Din Thomas
Luigi Fioravanti
Thiago Alves
Marcus Aurelio
Marcelo Garcia
Yves Edwards
Gleison Tibau
Wilson Gouveia
Roan Carneiro
Cole Miller
Micah Miller
Todd Duffee
Hector Lombard

Now thats alot of tough guys!

by ItsNormlToSmokePot on Jun 11, 2009 2:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, if I was a top fighter with the option of training anywhere…I would probably be at ATT, then Nog/Anderson/Machida’s camp, followed by Greag Jackson’s team!

btw, Cowboy is the man! I have been a fan since the episode that he appeared on the TAP OUT show.

He has got HUGE balls n Grit and I think would make for a great champion! 1 thing is for sure, you wont ever see Cowboy “Running” during a fight! He is such a bad ass WARRIOR!

Does anyone think this would be a better idea for TUF? Having a couple big-name camps go at each other.

by PW on Jun 11, 2009 11:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah.. I guess you got me with ATT. But do all those guys train at one facility? I think its spread out over multiple bases. So not all those guys train all the time with each other. Jackson’s guys may have their own local gyms, but they all come together for teammates training camp. Plus I think the small group based team would be better then 40+ guys. But yeah, ATT is a great camp.

Working with Rashad Evans will help him with 2 things, Stuffing Takedowns and getting up after getting taken down.. I like it!!

I don’t know why, but I don’t like this guy, and it’s not because he’s a cowboy.

by mike on Jun 10, 2009 8:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So it’s not because you just watched brokeback mountain?

by Double A on Jun 10, 2009 9:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with Mike…I think he’s gotten too cocky. I don’t care for Varner either though.

by Slap Nuts on Jun 10, 2009 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He just trying to make some more money as he as well as every other WEC fighter is way way underpaid…he was on the tapout show when no one knew about him

i effin love this guy, he just walks forward like the terminator or somethin lol. he needs to rematch, win the belt, then move up to the ufc so he can make some real money, you know his paycheck would be helluva lot bigger in the big leagues and he can fight some real competition

by wingblade on Jun 10, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Varner easily won the first fight, though I wasn’t impressed with the way that it ended. Cerrone’s good but his wrestling will have had to have improved a lot for him to trouble Varner. Some Cerrone fans are letting Jamie’s whiny personality and Frank Mir’s commentary get in the way of their predictions. I’ve got Varner by UD in the rematch.

by David W-S on Jun 10, 2009 9:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

did i watch a different fight cerrone got his ass handed to him on the mat and the stand up

by nelson on Jun 10, 2009 9:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A lot of talk from a guy who got beat by an injured fighter. I’m taking Varner here and I’m also going to support him. Cowboy hit him with a huge illegal knee then he is going to go complain when Jamie doesn’t want to continue? What an ass.

Dana said to Cole Miller on TUF5 that if you are ever hurt from an illegal strike to just stay down. Its not worth it to prove you are tough. This is the “are you a f***ing fighter guy”.

Side note. Varner’s timeout from the Razor fight was totally legal. They were in the starting standing position and his mouthpiece out. The ref should have called the timeout but he didn’t do his job so Jamie had to. Respect a guy who stands up for his rights

by EazyEismydad on Jun 10, 2009 10:33 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

idk what you were watching Eazyeismydead but that knee barley grazed varner. After the knee u knew varner wanted out, the guy was crying, cerrone is simply a bad ass and i see a tko in one of the middle rounds. Varner is a joke when comes down to a war, cerrone is a straight out dog.

by jman on Jun 10, 2009 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you still arent allowed to call timeout in a fight man, that most certainly ISNT is right, he got rocked and razor rob was about to finish him and he knew it, its not like the mouth piece fell out, razor KNOCKED it out, thats part of the fight, and the ref should have let razor rob finish it, bullshit ending frankly

by Dave on Jun 11, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

exactly Dave. You are supposed to keep your mouth guard in your mouth. You can’t spit it out and then call time out. They don’t go flying out of ppl’s mouths in MMA like they do in boxing.

And the illegal knee excuse is a joke. It’s about how these guys respond to adversity. Cowboy was in bad positions for the whole fight and kept coming forward looking for his opportunity. Varner was in position to win the fight for 4 rounds and when things started to go bad( he was getting tired/ hurt/ cerrone was still coming) he found a way out. He brought up the fact that he got hurt early in the fight in the post fight. He didn’t say, “sorry guys, he hit me with an illegal knee and I couldn’t see straight”, he said “i hurt my foot and broke my hand earlier in the fight”. Odds are he would have made it out of the round and won a dominant UD, but Cerrone was only looking for one chance and that was taken away by a tired, hurt, scared Varner.

by Crowls on Jun 11, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you didn’t take the knee so stfu it hit his temple and the side of his eye it doesn’t have to be Nate’s knee on Thales to be a good shot

by nelson on Jun 11, 2009 12:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I can’t believe this “Cowboy” (who comes from a white collar family) has the balls to talk this shit. He got worked on all levels by a guy with a broken hand and foot, everyone is all over Urijah’s nuts talking about how brave he was for continuing and what not. Jamie had the exact same injury (just different finger) and he won his fight. Bottom line, Jamie has the belt, Cowboy isn’t even close to Varner in talent or strength. I promise you all that Varner will dominate the next fight and cerrone will never fight in the UFC.

by Ballsy on Jun 11, 2009 1:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Varner is that you? Your post sounds like a pre fight interview.“I promise you all that Varner will dominate the next fight and cerrone will never fight in the UFC.” Your a pumpkin head.

by Cliff on Jun 11, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

they talk about Faber because he finished the fight. He didn’t find a way out.

“im a cowboy” lol easy now brokeback

by mak on Jun 11, 2009 1:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

cerrone sucks balls, hes sayin he hopes varner stands up wit him, i remember last fight varner dropped him like 3-4 times. and varner beat the shyt outta him every round every1 only thinks cerrone did good cuz frank mir was licking his ballz the whole fight pumpin him up even tho he was gettin his ass kicked

by iceman_333 on Jun 11, 2009 3:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not a huge Varner fan, but Varner dominated the first 3 rds of this fight Up until he broke his limbs. It really wasnt even close, kinda dissapointing because I was cheering for Cerrone.
But I think Cerrone is crazy for thinking that fight was even close.

If not for Varner breaking his shit on Cerrones face, it wasnt even a close fight.

by Badguy on Jun 11, 2009 9:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

All you “Cowboy” ball lickers must have very short term memory. Varner owned him in their fight. Broken hand/foot whatever…that does not matter. He was hit with an illegal blow.PERIOD. Cowboy was owned the entire fight and would have lost most likely every round.

BFD about Jackson’s camp. Training with Rashad and GSP one day out of a month does not a champion maketh. Varner is a better fighter plain and simple.

by MMALURK on Jun 11, 2009 9:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Frank Mir must have wanted to re create a scene from Brokeback Mountain with Cerrone by the way he was pumping him up on the color commentary that night.

hah wow. I cant believe Cerrone actually thought the fight was close. He got his ass kicked standing up and on the ground. The Judges were way off calling that a split decision. Varner won hands down! He’s a real champ!!
