First UFC Gym set to open in Concord, California on June 17

Las Vegas, NV (USA) – The UFC Octagon isn’t just for fighters anymore. Now, for the first time in the 15-year history of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, anyone - no matter how young or old – can experience what it’s like to train in the most exciting sport in the world thanks to the launch of the UFC Gym. UFC and New Evolution Fitness Company (NEFC) announced today that Concord, California will be the first home to the ultimate fitness destination, one that combines a complete UFC experience with mixed martial arts and fitness.

"We are excited to open our first UFC Gym, it’s going to have something for everyone in the family, from traditional mixed martial arts classes, to all-around fitness classes, personal training and a gym just for kids," said Dana White, UFC President. "We are going to redefine the fitness industry, and get everyone excited about fitness again, starting with the first UFC Gym in Concord, California."

NEFC Co-founders, Mark Mastrov and Jim Rowley, both from the East Bay, believe that Concord, CA is the ideal location for the first UFC Gym. "Born, raised and now residing in the East Bay, we wanted our first UFC Gym to be close to home. This facility will allow us to carefully monitor and fine-tune the UFC Gym concept for future growth and provide our community with fitness training in new dynamic ways," said Mark Mastrov.

An interactive tour, available through UFCgym.com, reveals concepts for the overall layout. The site also shows classes and schedules, the variety of fitness areas, and the many options for personal training and private mixed martial arts instruction. Special self-defense classes for women will be available, as well as a "UFC Kids Gym," a place for children 14 and younger to experience fun and interactive fitness classes of their very own.

While every UFC gym will have the most sophisticated cardio equipment and more than 25-tons of free-weights, it will also have the luxury of spacious locker rooms with dry saunas, and a place to relax for snacks and drinks inside "The Arm Bar". Plus an exclusive UFC Gym Store where you’ll find the very latest in UFC apparel and products.

The first UFC Gym enrollment center is set to open on Wed. June 17th and is located at The Willows Shopping Center, 1975 Diamond Blvd in Concord, CA 94520. For additional information, click on UFCgym.com.

Earlier this year, UFC and NEFC announced a partnership with Welterweight Champion Georges "Rush" St-Pierre, and Lightweight Champion BJ "The Prodigy" Penn to build "St-Pierre" and "Penn" UFC Gyms, with locations planned for St-Pierre’s native city of Montreal and Penn’s home state of Hawaii.

UFC Gym is the first major brand extension for the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the all-time industry leader in the sport of mixed martial arts. In alliance with NEFC owners Mark Mastrov and Jim Rowley, developers of many of the world’s most successful fitness brands, UFC Gyms will give UFC enthusiasts and fitness seekers alike the opportunity to practice the training techniques of famed UFC athletes, including Georges St-Pierre and BJ Penn in their respective UFC gyms.

UFC Gym is the first to combine the world of mixed martial arts and fitness to create the ultimate fitness experience. For more information, please visit UFCgym.com.

So begins the era of “Cotton Candy MMA.” Bad idea for the sport. I guarantee the UFC will eventually try to work something into the membership contracts stipulating that members wishing to fight will only be allowed to compete in “UFC approved/sanctioned events.” There will be some type of fine print.

The Monopoly continues…

The UFC gym is probably more for mainstream, I can see the idea working, but wonder why ‘Concord Ca’?

I have plenty of pent up aggression and I’m sick of putting gigantic fist sized holes through my walls and doorS! It’d be nice to learn how 2 get out there and properly fight…personally as a young hyphy and very aggressive female, I see this as an opportunity for me to learn something useful! And put all my violence into good productive use..any1 who wants 2 teach a hot 23 yr old female sum tricks holler!

by mo on Jun 10, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

Same here. But like ruanfiy said, can we really expect them to launch a gym in Scotland when they haven’t even held an event here? Regardless, I’d definitely join if they opened a gym in (or near) Glasgow.

Man wish there was one on the West coast of Canada.

On a side note, Does Swick try to use the nick name ‘Quick’ still?

Or is it just ironically now, like calling a fat guy ‘tiny’.

4 outta 5 fights have gone to decision.

The only guy he could finish was ‘Goulet’, like thats hard.

by ShaiZ on Jun 10, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

Or how about anywhere but Quebec. They need one in Toronto.

Yo Figthers dont change nicknames. Name one who has??
Swick has been quick since he started in the ufc.
just because a few fights go to decisions dont mean he should change it to Mike "Not so quick " Swick.

Only fighter who needs to change thier nick is Kendall Grove.

by WutangSwordsman on Jun 10, 2009 9:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Ya agreed about Kendal, but 4-5 swicks last fights went to decision.

Not too quick lately

by ShaiZ on Jun 10, 2009 10:34 PM EDT up reply actions

And Ken-Flo…

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on Jun 10, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Name a fighter who’s changed his nickname? Erm… how about Mike Swick himself? His original nickname was “Kid Lion”, if I remember correctly.

by homgran on Jun 11, 2009 4:23 AM EDT up reply actions

“Quick” doesn’t have to mean that his fights are short it can simply mean that he’s really fast.

guess that’s the big announcement Dana mentioned when he said the UFC is gonna do something big and “change MMA forever.”

by jaime on Jun 10, 2009 8:46 PM EDT reply actions

Haha, wouldn’t surprise me. Pretty sure that’ll be a TV deal, though.

these gym’s Cant Be the big Annoucment .. They anouced this a while ago.

I bet memberships are SUPER expensive. based on what they charge for PPV CARDS my guess is they go for 1 million for 1 year.

this is going to be interesting and how it will affect other gyms in the other since cesar gracie’s gym and 24 hr fitness is only a couple blocks away. the building is pretty big, it use to be an old compusa.
