Tim Sylvia: 'I would like to end my career in the UFC'

Props: Fighter's Only
Quoteworthy:
"I don't talk to Dana, not at all. I don't have his number. But we had a pretty good relationship. I know he has said some pretty bad things about me but, to be honest, I think a lot of it has to do with marketing; Dana tries to come off like he doesn't care. Dana likes to come off as an asshole but a lot of it is an act I believe. I had a good relationship with [UFC co-owner] Lorenzo Fertitta, great guy. So, it is what is. But I would love to be back there again one day, I would like to end my career in the UFC."
Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia talks about going back to the land of milk and Zuffa for a chance to finish his career in the promotion that helped make him a star. "The Maine-iac" has been on the shelf since getting steamrolled by Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction "Banned" in July 2008. That’s more than a year of inactivity, which will come to an end when Sylvia makes his boxing debut against former Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer — barely one month after "Merciless" turns 48 years of age — at Adrenaline III: "Bragging Rights" in Birmingham, Ala., on June 13. Sylvia is on a two-fight losing skid and has dropped three of his last four contests. He’ll need to put some wins together over someone other than a geriatric boxer if he wants to be considered for another run inside the Octagon. Beating Paul Buentello at Affliction 3 on August 1 would definitely be a good start.

I don’t hate this guy. I don’t think he is a top 10 HW but he is respectful and does what he can. I can think of some match-ups I would like to see for him in the UFC. Kongo, Herring, Carwin, Gonzaga, Cro Cop. Those would all be entertaining fights. I’m not saying Sylvia would win any but…
by boz on Jun 9, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
I would like him to come back to the UFC as well, for all those match ups.
I had a terrible experience today guys. I sat through the entire running of “Never Surrender”. Let me say…..
ABGUISEARBGPUAWENGOIWENGOIWEHGAHWOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
Thank you. I am now going out to assassinate the producer, director, and writer of the movie. And that dumbas$ Mexican lead character.

yeah me too, i think every former champ has some sort of right to end their career in the UFC if they want to.. I do not like watching him fight, but that’s my opinion anyways
by RoB on Jun 9, 2009 10:11 PM EDT up reply actions
I hate watching the way he used to fight. The “safe” way I guess. Back when he was knocking guys out left and right was fine. But how a guy who earned the UFC HW title when he was undefeated cant finsh Assuerio Silva, or Jeff Monson is crazy. I’ll give him AA and Vera, but he looked good in the Nog fight till he got caught.
by Synyster on Jun 9, 2009 10:24 PM EDT up reply actions
He did look good in the Nog fight, and had plenty of opportunity to go in for the kill like Mir did, but because his tendancy to play it safe and go for a comforatble descision win, he through his chance away. I have been annoyed for a while with the way he fights to get a descision win and never really goes for the kill when an opportunity arises unlike a fighter like Kongo for example, and really could not care if I didn’t see him fight again.
by Ade on Jun 10, 2009 5:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Never did care for Timmy. At this point, the only fight I would like to see from him would be Arlovski 4, just to give Andre a chance to break even. If he did go to the UFC they should feed him to Carwin or Dos Santos.
by Cole on Jun 10, 2009 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions
JJ: Couldnt have said it better myself.
THis guy doesnt deserve to be in the UFC. Yes he can hang with anyone, but so the FOCK what….How much of the fans money has this tool wasted? He is like the absolute opposite of wanderlei…he doesnt give a crap about fans and he doesnt even care if we are entertained or not…he just wants his paycheck. How many lackluster main events was he in? wasting our $45 every single freaking time he fought….
If I were Dana, I WOULD NEVER let him back in the UFC! NEVER!
THink about all the exciting Tim sylvia fights of the past couple years…Only exciting fights were the ones he lost in:
Couture fight, Nog fight and the Fedor fight….everytime he won, he did so boring the crap out of us…. Think about the vera, MOnson, 3rd arlovski fight…..He is the most boring ko artist in the history of the sport and its a shame because he always wasnt like this….before ever becoming champion, he was a beast…knocking dudes out left and right, in entertaining fashion…I was never a fan, but I used to actually enjoy watching him Bang it out….those days are long gone.
Keep him the FOCK out of the uFC! He had his chance and didnt give a crap about his fans. He was the most boring champion in the history of the UFC. We gave sherk a lot of crap when he was champion, for dry humping, but truth be told, as a champion, Sylvia made sherk look like Wanderlei Silva!
by john on Jun 10, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions
No kidding. Before every one of his fights he would be all over the place about how he is a dominant HW and a dominant striker, etc. Then he comes in and plays pattycake for 15 minutes or 25 minutes, using his chimpanzee arms to keep opponents away and get a decision. If Big Poopy was 6’1 instead of 6’8 he would be driving a forklift right now.
by PW on Jun 10, 2009 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions
PW: EXACTLY!!!!! nOt only does he keep them at bay with his long arms, playing pitty pat…. but even worse is when he dry humps them against the cage DOING ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! What the hell is such a Mammoth of a Man, with reach over all his opponents, doing closing the distance and dry humping his opponent against the cage? That just tells me that he doesnt even want to fight and couldnt care less about the fans who pay his salary.
He has ZERO skills…is all size. Like you said, if he was 6’1, none of us would have ever known who he was….which would be great if you ask me! I regret knowing his existence!
by john on Jun 10, 2009 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Doesnt care about the fans? From everything I have heard and seen about sylvia I dont think he has any fans lol. And im actually going to stick up for him, if people ( not just some, but damn near all ) talked about me like that I wouldnt give a fuck about the fans either
by lokie on Jun 10, 2009 11:24 AM EDT up reply actions
The guy has all the physical ability to destroy his opponents but instead chooses to slap them from a distance or hump them against the fence. If he actually did what he says he’s going to do and really should be doing then (knock dudes the F out) he would have more people looking forward to his fights.
by PW on Jun 10, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions
Nice call boz. I was thinking the same thing. Big Tim is kind of boring and probibly not in the top 10, but he’s a former champ who has only lost to Couture, Nog, and Fedor in recent memory. Just because the guys unpopular and fighting Mercer and calling out Shammy doesn’t meen he’s not a serious fighter. And I think he does pose interesting matchups against some UFC heavyweights.
by DB on Jun 9, 2009 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions
I was seriously on point with you until you started listing all the ridiculous things he’s been doing as of late and just burst out laughing. I agree with you though still even if i think Mercer is gonna smash him all over that cage.
by NameNotRequired on Jun 9, 2009 11:48 PM EDT up reply actions
LOL!!!!! Good one. I think that if he were ever to come back to the UFC he would definitely be thrown a couple of cans to start off with.
by ajttu on Jun 9, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions
Bit harsh, Timmy has his place in MMA and is a great heel. He also matches up well against the new breed of huge wrestlers in the UFC because of his skillset – weight, reach and TD defense. If a fighter brings it to Tim you will see a good fight, could be a good follow up for cro cop if he finishes AlTurk. Would also be a good benchmark test for the likes of Dos Santos, Carwin, Cain. Fights left for him outside UFC are Overeem, Barnett, Rogers but he would prob go 2-1 in those so I reckon back in the UFC or retired by the end of the 2010.

I can’t stand him either. Watching him drag his back leg around the cage sideways…. his knee bends slightly at an awkward angle and looks like its about to snap at any moment from his own body weight.

I wanna see the odds for the Mercer fight. I’d bet Mercer can out-box him if he hasn’t laced up gloves in the past five years!

Dude speaking of boxing…did you see what Mayweather said about the MMA champs…
"Man, who in the UFC as good as Floyd Mayweather? Look back to 2-3 years ago, when this all started. One of the stars in the sport, Chuck Liddell, has gone 3-4. The man has been Knocked out so many time his boss made him retire. How many times you seen Floyd Mayweather knocked out? How many times you seen Floyd Mayweather even knocked down? None."
"Who? Who’s Lyoto Machida? Lyoto Machida? Oh you mean that guy who sold 200,000 PPVs now he’s a superstar? It doesn’t take much over there does it? I’ve sold 3.5 million PPVs between my last 2 fights alone. How much money did Machida make his last fight? $100,000 maybe? Tell Dana White, for $100,000, I will come show him what a 28 million dollar check looks like.
How is Machida as good as Floyd Mayweather? Because he’s beaten a few unskilled bar room fighters? At the end of the day, you already know, when you watch Floyd Mayweather you see the past, present and future of the sport. Machida don’t deserve to be mentioned in he same breath as me. Kousta Tszyu would whip up on his stank ass anyway."
Fedor???
"Again, who? Oh, you mean that Russian guy Oscar let fight for him? The guy who fought Freddie Roach’s boy? Yeah, I know him. He’s a nice guy, but man was Roach’s boy whippin’ up on him until he got that hail Mary overhand. He needs to get at a real boxing coach like Roger Mayweather to teach him how to throw a punch. The man had his head down and his eyes closed when he threw that punch, anyone who says that wasn’t luck doesn’t know much about the sweet science…"

Ahhh!!! Jose Aldo! Do us a favor please!! Miguel Torres! Machida! Fedor! SOMEONE! Knock this scumbagshitfuck out. Better yet, beat his face in, knock him down, beat him there, then tap him out! Pretty much, beat him down Fedor/Timmay style!

thanks alpha for posting that, although all it did was piss me the FOCK off and put me in a bad mood! lol “Relax, BREATHE JOhnny” in my matt Serra voice!
I just hate scumbags who bash something that they know nothing about and arent willing to get in their and back up their words.
If you are a fighter and you dont want to fight in the UFC…..Keep your freaking mouthy shut!
THats why I love Fedor! after all the bashing Dana has done about him, questioning his skills and talking crap about his nbationality….U never once hear Fedor bad mouth the UFC or any of the fighters he is asked about potential match ups. All he says is that they are great fighters, it would be a great chance. He doesnt ever say, I will crush that guy or that guy isnt in my league. Most you get out of him “is I will win, if its GOds will”…I have to adore and respect him for his spirit!
They need to make a movie called: FEDOR!!! and they should either get Olag Taktorov to play Fedor or that guy that played the cop “HERC” in the wire! THat actor also was on entourage for a couple of episodes a few season’s ago…he was Vince’s childhood friend named “Dom”, who just had gotten out of jail…anyone know what Im talking about? His character stole the SHREK doll from the party….He would be perfect to play fedor, accept for his nY accent and the fact that he has probably never trained a day in his life!

Fuck a Mayweather.
Can’t deny the man’s talent, though.
Pac is gonna push his shit in. This guy ducked Cotto, Margarito, Mosley and Oscar back when he was in his prime. Now he’s already started to duck Pac-Man.
He is one of the most skilled guys to ever put on gloves, but he will never go down as one of the all-time greats because he is not a warrior of any sort. He always fights the safe fight even when he doesn’t have to, and he is a crybaby blowhard asshat of the highest order. This guy epitomizes what has gone wrong with pro sports. All about the dollah bills, y’all.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 11:45 PM EDT up reply actions
GREAT POST JJ. couldnt agree more!
Unfortunately, I dont think he will ever fight Pac because like you said, he just plays it safe, and has NEVER been a WARRIOR. Are only hope is that the idiot Billionaire is so damn greedy, that the dollar signs will force him into a ring against Pacman, so we can see Pac man give him the beating that this tool deserves.
All skills, no Heart, and absolutely NO CLASS!
by john on Jun 10, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions
MMA fighters might seem unskilled to Mayweather when he looks at their hands, but there are so many more dimensions to MMA. And if that’s the case then why was he talking about fighting in the cage less than a year ago?
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 10, 2009 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions
Well,“cash king” just think that he is the pound for pound greatest fighter who ever lived, that’s all…Don’t get mad at him folks!
"Man, I am here to talk about Floyd Mayweather, the face of boxing. The cash king. The pound for pound greatest fighter who ever lived. I got Marquez, the man who SHOULD be the pound for pound king. I mean really, he beat Pacman both times. You know it, I know it, the fans know it. They keep asking me why I ain’t come back to fight Pacman? Because in my eyes Manny wasn’t number one pound for pound when I was gone. The guy who beat him twice was. In my eyes, I am coming back to fight the number one pound for pound guy. Once I whip his ass and reclaim my throne, I’m going to show you all that little midget from the Phillipines will be nothing but an after thought when Money May gets a hold of that ass."
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 10, 2009 12:11 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, bravo Floyd. You’re the welterweight champ who comes out of retirement to fight a lightweight champ (Marquez). That “midget fom the Phillipines” is more of a fighter than Floyd will ever be, whatever happens in their fight.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 10, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s hard to respect the man achievements when you hear him say stupid things, like that!
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 10, 2009 12:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Money man really makes me furious. Marquez beat Pacman twice? is he blind? the other 1 was a draw[but I think the decision should’ve gone to Pac]. That pompous f**k! Once he gets a hold of Pac’s a$$, he’s gonna be in for a rude awakening.
He is pretty boy because he always looks good after his fights? well let’s see how good he would look after Pac man beats him up. At least Pacman isn’t scared to face Mosley[even if there’s a huge weight difference]and is even raring to face Cotto and the others lined up to beat him up[if they can].
And Pac’s a midget? You are openly bein’ called “Li’l Gayweather” you D-bag. And the difference between heights is only 1.5 inches, so lil’ gayman ain’t really nothin’ PAc’s gonna beat his a$$. Just don’t know if this fight will materialize because Pac is ponderin’ on goin’ into politics after his next fight after Hatton[possibly his last]. Sorry Floyd, Pac’s the #1 P4P!

I would give anything to see Mayweathers face while hes getting armbared by torres.
by medecine balls on Jun 10, 2009 1:01 AM EDT up reply actions
LOL, me too.
But forget Torres, Gayweather is in Brown/Aldo or Penn/Florian’s weight divisions. All that bobbing and weaving with your head two feet off the ground will work in boxing… in MMA it’s a prescription for an Aldo flying double-knee upside the dome.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 10, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions
Syd, I thought Marquez got robbed on the draw. Marquez’ style and right hand gave Pac big problems. But since then, Pac has developed way better footwork, discovered defence, and added an awesome right hand to his arsenal. He had the speed and power and aggression and heart then, but now he’s a complete boxer.
The fight will happen. Floyd is already hyping it, which I grudgingly admit he has a knack for. Guess it comes with being a douchebag, ’cause Penn, Diaz and Tito are good at it too.
After his boxing career, Pac could easily be President of the Phillipines. I think that’s a little sad.

nah! j/k jj…actually its just for calling fedor out…and by the way i tell this to you right now..there is no way in hell he is going to beat Marquez…Dinamita beat pacquiao the second time with crisp counter punching..Marquez is a ring technician with powers and skill improving after every round..and Gayweather is a semi counter puncher that likes to win via decision…so literally Dinamita will just blow his ring rust off when they square off..i wonder if he can even land a clean shot at Marquez…plain and simple

I know the UFC is the big dog of the MMA world, but isn’t he making a lot more money where he is now? Sometimes being number 1 is great, but most of the time $$$ speaks louder. He could retire a rich man right now. Why put up with the people downing on him in the UFC. Bash if you like, but I actually like him. Some may think it was gay that this guy would carry his belt everywhere, but I’d like to think that it meant something to him and for that I give him a pass. There are much worse people in MMA to put up with.

Timmy has a damn good record and did a lot of damage in the UFC. People have such short-term memory.
Timmy was beating Big Nog senseless, he just got caught in a stupid submission.
Timmy also beat Arlovski and plenty of other UFC heavyweights.
