Nick Diaz willing to fight at light heavyweight 'if something big came along'

Props: FightHype.com
Quoteworthy:
"We’ll probably have him go back to welterweight again unless Strikeforce has something for him at middleweight. I know he wants to go back and fight at welterweight. He likes to do triathlons so he likes to stay leaner for those and it ties into the MMA. He wouldn’t have to cut that much weight if he was leaner with the workouts he has to do for the triathlons and everything. You won’t be seeing him go back to lightweight anytime soon because he’s just not very good there. His skills are good at any weight, but when he loses that much weight in the cut, he’s prone to health problems, infections and all kinds of things start happening to him. He gets very big and that’s not his natural weight. He will fight at higher weights. If something big came along, we would put him at light heavy. We would bulk him up a bit and let him fight the really big guys. I bet people would enjoy that. He’s a true old school fighter. He’s like the Gracie Jiu Jitsu guys from the old school. He will fight at any weight class. That’s the kind of fighter he is."
Cesar Gracie -- the mastermind behind Nick Diaz and several other top fighters such as Nate Diaz, Jake Shields and Gilbert Melendez -- indicates that his fighter is willing to compete as high as 205 pounds if the right opportunity (and challenger) emerges in the future. Diaz now fights under the Strikeforce banner, where he has experienced tremendous success. He recently picked apart Scott Smith at the "Lawler vs. Shields" event last weekend en route to a third round submission (rear naked choke) win in a record-setting performance (strikes). He also beat down Frank Shamrock via technical knockout earlier this year. Both fights were contested around the 180-pound mark, which is 20 pounds heavier than when he was fighting as a lightweight as recently as last year. Gracie indicated that he would ideally remain a welterweight (170 pounds); however, at this time, there doesn't appear to be very many good fights out there for him -- the UFC has the rights to a majority of the best welterweights in the world. So does Diaz stay near the middleweight division limit or go even higher to get the big fights? Time will tell, but he doesn't appear to be scared either way.

I’m really liking what I’m seeing from Diaz lately. I want to see him fight a tough wrestler now and see how he does.
I really appreciate seeing someone doing what no one else is really doing. His fists of fury approach is definitely fun to watch.

Hate him or love he puts on a show before during the fight when he got kicked twice and froze i thought that was funny

That’s true his great on the ground and boxing i mean for some one to throw close to 400 punche’s and land a litle over half that really good i think he would have finished him off faster if he would have stoped playing around

Been a Nick Diaz fan since day one and will continue to be no matter what. You gotta love his attitude. Yeah, some people think he’s a “thug” but what they don’t realize is that 99.9% of all his prefight talk is simply to sell the fight (except KJ Noons, Joe Riggs, and Diego Sanchez).
I have way more respect for the fighters that try to challenge themselves and fight guys bigger than them to truely test thier skills, ala BJ Penn and Gegard Moussasi. These are the TRUE warriors.
GSP is a 205 lb’er that fights at 170. Nick is a 170 lb’er that fights at 160, 170, 180, and wants 205. Too many fighters rely on thier size to win them fights. Size means nothing if you don’t have the technique to go with it.
The problem for every fighter out there right now is that Nick has more technical standup and BJJ than the vast majority of fighters in any weight division.
I wonder if Dana White wishes he still had Nick Diaz??

Great post VM, absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! When you mention TRUE Warriors please dont forget the name WANDERLEI Silva who has fought at Heavyweiught and LHW most of his career, 2 weight classes that he had no business fighting in, let alone dominating! So sick of monsters cutting 20 lbs and then fighting… like Forrest and GSP (who I am a fan of). Take away Forrest’s size advantage, if he were fighting at LHW the size Bisping was when he fought at LHW, he would get DESTROYED!!!
only thing that I dont like about the Diaz situation is that ideally they want him at 170 lbs. There is no point in that! All the best WW are in the UFC. only 2 top welterweights outside the UFC are Sheilds and Diaz who are adamant about not fighting each other. one of them, if not both, need to get as far away from the welterweight division as possible unless they sign with the uFC. I say let Jake stay at WW, and Nick should focus on Middleweight…but I dont have a problem with NIck moving up to fight a top LHW.
For example: Babalu vs. Diaz would be bad ass at 205 lbs. Even better, they could probably meet at a catchweight of about 197 lbs since bablu isnt exactly a BIG LHW. Think about the grappling exchanges in a match up like that!

catchweight fights rule John. Look at Diaz’s physically this weekend, he looked phenomenal!
you got to call me bro!

I think he is getting a bit ahead of himself here. I agree with you guys he absolutly should be aplauded for his attitude, a true warrior.
However he has beaten two mediocre strikers recently using his RANGE essentially. If he jumps weight he is going to get people with his reach and stacks more power.
I like diaz at 170 and bring him to the UFC and see where his striking really is at.
Or Semtex in strikeforce… someone with some muay thai skills and genuine power.
by Nick J on Jun 9, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Nick, you’ve got to recognize though that in addition to his reach, he’s become MMA’s first true volume fighter. Even guys with equal or long reach will get stiffled by his game if they don’t possess really technical striking. In order to beat him, you’ve gotta have more technical and cleaner boxing/striking (including head movement and all) as well as a great offensive wrestling with subs to match(particularly singles and doubles coz clinch takedowns don’t seem to work on him) or somewhat decent defensive wrestling. Guys in higher weight divisions rely more on power in everything and are mostly standup guys so he does benefit from a technical standpoint up until he starts facing really high level guys. For example KJ killed him simply because he was a better boxer and didn’t let him establish that range for his offensive volume and shut down his takedowns. Just my take on it!
by NameNotRequired on Jun 9, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions
Good anaysis as usual NNR, but “volume fighter” + small gloves + LHW big puncher = trouble for Nick.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 6:35 PM EDT up reply actions
HELLO!!! Have you guys forgotten his sick ground game! Even if someone finally gets the better out of him in the striking department, he isnt going to get out jitsed, because guys arent that well rounded that they can beat Nick at both phases of a fight. He has just become to crafty at standing and Grappling to be dominated by anyone. not to mention his under rated chin…that hasnt been cracked, or even fazed, yet!
I really want to see Dioaz vs. Babalu at a catch weight of 197 lbs.
tell me again, why I dont have a match maker job in mma? lol
by john on Jun 9, 2009 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions
His ground game is awesome john, but can he take a LHW to the mat and keep him there? I have serious doubts.
All this weight class talk has me stoked to see Wanderlei at 185 after the Franklin fight. He will be a big MW, and nobody at that weight hits like Rampage, Chuck or Cro-Cop. He could make some serious hay there if Dana doesn’t match him up with too many ground fighters.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 6:42 PM EDT up reply actions
What ever happen to Nick and the UFC? I know Dana dosen’t like him, but isn’t he worth having in the UFC? The dude always comes to fight and fights with heart all the time! He would be great to have back in the UFC now that his Stockton bro is in.
War Nick!!
by mmamac on Jun 9, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Another quick thought on Wanderlei (can you tell I’m stoked for Saturday, lol):
There’s been a lot of speculation that his chin has eroded, and I’m not sure I agree… the Cro-Cop kick was brutal, Henderson has big power (and crap technique), and the Rampage left hook would have felled an adult hippopotamus… plus he ate some of Chuck’s best shots and not many guys can say that (if any?).
But if it IS true, does anyone think all that time spent training at Chute-Box had anything to do with it? Their sparring sessions were legendary and murderous, and I’ve read that Wand was a wild man when he trained with them and guys were routinely knocked out. Just a suggestion I haven’t seen before, thought I’d throw it out there for you guys to walk all over!
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions
JJ: he cant shoot for double legs and expect to take LHW’s to the mat, but he can get them down with craft ju jitsu trips a la SHOGUN!
FOcking Wandy at Middleweight has me fired the FOck up! LIke you said, know one at middleweight is going to blast him like Cro Cop, Rampage did….Only one with that kind of dynamite is Hendo, but that is a different Hendo then the aging one thats fighting in the uFC today!
I will be furious if he is matched up against Grapplers! Let Wandy bang it out with the likes of:
Leben
Cote
Bisping
Marquardt
Kang
Wilson Goveai
Wandy vs. Sexyama would be interesting. THere striking would be great, plus wandy has dealt with world class Judokas before (the great YOSHIDA)
by john on Jun 9, 2009 7:39 PM EDT up reply actions
his BJJ black belt is better than 99% out there! when he gets anyone down, he can hold them there or take there back in a scramble!
by kevin on Jun 9, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I think a move to LHW is a mistake. The hehght/reach avantages he has would disappear and I do not believe he hits hard enough to dance with those big boys (I know he has some power).
Also, the rata-tat-tat punching style would not bode well in the higher weight class. They would be more like jabs and once the opponent got the timing down I say lights out Nick Diaz.
by DJ on Jun 9, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Although he will prolly get eaten alive at 205 …he has the old school warrior spirit. You got to give him that.
by robbyc on Jun 9, 2009 3:10 PM EDT reply actions
I really really dislike him from what I know about his character, but he is tough as nails and has really impressed me in his last 2 fights. I would rather see him fight some top notch welterweights than some marginal LHW. Jake Shields would be really interesting, though I guess that would never happen. Joe Riggs rematch maybe? Meh…limited options.

I’ve watched him come up and have seen all his fights, I hate his fight style and I hate him, but I can’t deny his talent.

Kevin, I “know about his character” about as much as the general public does. I was careful not to say “he is like this,” he is like that…" Don’t you think its massively hypocritical to tell someone they are wrong for using “FROM what I know…” by refuting it with “I personally know…?” Perhaps you should be able to discern by now that such a phrase emcompasses the fact I have limited knowledge and am acknowledging it? Are you telling me you don’t like the character of ANY fighter based on fight videos, conferences, weigh-ins, and interviews?
by Amos on Jun 9, 2009 4:46 PM EDT up reply actions
point takem Amos, but I don’t see why he’s not likable in post fight interviews. he helps guys up, says Smith should train with them. KJ Noons beat him due to a cut, has no business being in the cage with Nick, so yeah he went nuts
by kevin on Jun 9, 2009 6:12 PM EDT up reply actions
nicks a solid dude. He actually personally pays the doctor bills for all his training partners. Pays for Cat scans (which arent cheap)…There is a lot more to diaz then his bad boy persona!

That I did not know, John. My respect for Diaz as a life form just went up one full notch. It currently sits at negative-five.
Kev, do you really think it’s respectful to diss a guy’s camp and suggest he’s not learning enough there after you just kicked his ass? I don’t know, man.
And you don’t think KJ belonged in the cage with Nick? Really? He looked like he belonged in there just fine to me.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Man, I’m sick of Diaz fans dismissing that KJ noons fight like it shouldn’t matter.
KJ beat the hell out of Nick, and cut up his face real bad. They stopped it due to a cut yes, was Nick on his way to winning that fight prior? Hardly. He looked like he was on his way to being TKO’d.
Would Nick beat him in a rematch? I think he would, but that doesn’t change the fact that KJ clearly got the better of him the first time.
That loss probably helped Nick a lot, he dealt with his cartilage and seemed to have improved stand up from that point onward.
by ShaiZ on Jun 9, 2009 7:34 PM EDT up reply actions
he said “I wouldn’t talk shit if I didn’t know” did you miss that JJ? Scott Smith trains 20 min from Diaz! I though it was a solid thing to invite “the enemy” of that night to a “real team” atmosphere. You guys are like republicans turning that judge into a racist with 1/10 of her statement. take it for what it is, he was saying smith has talent and needs loyal guys to train with, that’s a compliment!
by kevin on Jun 9, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Kevin it was sort of a backhanded compliment, it was a compliment but he dissed Scotts whole team to do it.
He said those guys aren’t loyal or goood guys to train with.
I’ll admit, even tho he was a bit of a jerk, he was much better then usual.
Have you ever listened to any of his interviews on Sherdog radio? lol
by ShaiZ on Jun 9, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah, he rambles on and on like he doesn’t want to be there. go watch some of his fights in Japan, very low keyed post fight. I agree he dissed smith’s whole team…if you’re team is 80% (training) of how you’ll perform, Smith needs to heed Diaz’s advice, he’s not exactly tearing it up. He’s losing fights for 2 and 3 rounds and getting off a lucky bomb. Why not become more well rounded instead of relying solely on that one big punch everyone knows is coming?
by kevin on Jun 9, 2009 10:31 PM EDT up reply actions
I actually agree with what he said about Smith and his camp. Its like they are just out to collect paychecks…No way that Smith shoudl have been fighting so soon after the grueling Radach fight. How could he have possibly been prepared for Diaz.
Look how unprepared he was in the diaz fight! Scott smith has the potential to be better than he is!

Diaz is an (even bigger) idiot if he fights at 205. Don’t be a BJ, Nick. Stay where your frame belongs and kick ass!

You know…it’s only a thin line, between courageous and stupidity! ;)
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 9, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah but, the thing is, not enough depth in strikeforce for him to consistantly get big fights against opponents at a weight class that fits his frame. Thats why I think we will see him bounce around in different weight classes. There isnt really a dominant 205 lber in Strikeforce that I would say…“Diaz has NO BUSINESS fighting”…so let him take some big fights at 205 lbs. I would love to see him grapple with Babalu or beat the snot out of Tito ortiz and then submit Tito!
If he signs with the UFC, then he better keep his ass down at 170 lbs…but in strikeforce, he is good enough to do whatever he wants. Only fighters Diaz shouldnt face on strikeforces roster are: Grim, Werdum, and Overeem. He has a great shot against anyone else on the roster!
IMO, he has to be involved in the title fight to crown the new interim MW title in strikeforce. I just say F-it! Lawler vs. Diaz 2 for the interim belt!
I hope that Strikeforce can bring in Mayhem because Mayhem vs. Diaz would be amazing!

why stop at lhw, why not put him at heavyweight and have him take on brett rodgers lol. diaz should just stick to 170 or catchweights at 180. fluctuating in weights and different cuts isnt good for guys either. there are some possibly fites for him at 170, joe riggs definately comes to mind. wouldnt mind seeing lighter guys come up to fite him as well. this guy is a true mma fighter. Or as dana would say, He’s a real f*ckn fighter.

Corey Hill should fight Kyle Maynard. Their limbs are equally useful.

ShaiZ is correct about height not always equalling a certain weight class. Dudes are just built differently.
And Kevin is correct about Hill being better suited for WW with a little muscle armor. Dude was way too frail and I don’t see how he can ever trust that leg in a fight again. Shame.
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 6:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree that Corey would be better suited to WW, but my point still stands, WW is a far cry from HW.

diaz has a great chin
whilst his punches dont do crazy amounts of damage individually after 250 per round your gonna be on queer street
if a kid hit you on the head with a plastic sword or similar 50 times a minutes for 5 minutes youd be on your way to a and e
and im sure diaz hits harder
he has awesome combinations and is one of the most exciting fighters around
kjnoons should be in his future as should lawler who hes already beaten as will several others
hed take out some weak lhws but if you stuck him in with a top 50 guy he should lose lots of the fights
bigger guys hit harder and his eyes will stream blood
id be more worried about who shields has left to fight than diaz…
although there should be a few affliction guys belfort lindland etc who are possibilities
by hhh on Jun 9, 2009 3:59 PM EDT reply actions
Vitor would take Diaz fairly easily I think. He hits harder and faster, and while his ground skills may not be as good as Nick’s, they’re more than enough for him to hang on the mat with Diaz.
Now Lindland… that’s interesting. However, I see Matt taking that one as well.
by HeroOfTime on Jun 9, 2009 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions
lawler just lost and he’s already beatin him so not sure what it would do for him i mean be exciting fight but if he lost would put him back an if he won wouldnt change anything. And since Shields train together an wont fight he need’s to stick to 170 comes down to does he want a Title or just good fights, as for 205 he would do alright till he faced the ones that are just way bigger then him tho could go to ground but would be hard fight, Vitor would be good fight, You say he doesnt have chance but vitor hasn’t been fighting as much as Diaz has of late and vs talented guys as for Lindland i think it would it up just like the Smith fight…

Blah, Blah, Blah…. He’ll do fine in Strikeforce; a bunch of UFC has-beens. Why do you think he fights there now? So he can be a big fish in a small pond. He couldn’t beat any of the UFC top 5 or 6 welterweights.

I’m getting tired of those “We train together and are friends so we can’t fight each other ever”.

We’ve seen boxing finals with 2 Cubans, and Tae Kwon Do finals with 2 Koreans, and Judo finals with 2 Japanese, and Wrestling finals with 2 whatevers.

It is interesting to note, how many of you have commented here, and also commented six months or so ago (before the Diaz Shamrock fight). The best part is how different your opinions of him are now. Wow, you guys are fickle. Look at what you said back then, about what a thug he is, and how he has no talent. That he would get killed by this fighter or that fighter. That you would not even pay to see him. Now, 90% of you are so positive about him, and what a great fighter he is. The truth in my opinion is that he has always been a good fighter. Of course, as soon as he loses one fight, you will all be talking smack again. Take a look at some of his fights on the archives. He has been a part of some great fights! His fights with Lawler, Karo, Diego, Gomi, and Sherk were all good fights! He shows up to fight. There is no running away. He steps in and slugs it out. I would rather watch him show up and brawl and lose, then have to watch Anderson Silva do his Bruce Lee imitation for 5 rounds. I think as people start to mature as MMA fans, they will start to realize that it is not always the winners that make a great night of fights, but the guys like Nick that show up to put up a great fight even if they lose. I understand that there is a skill to not being hit, but you are in that cage to win, not try not to lose.
by t.s. on Jun 9, 2009 8:20 PM EDT reply actions
Its for that reason that I would like to see Diaz in the UFC at 185, start him out with Leben, then Bisping then one of the Silvas. Not saying he wins but they would be great fights to watch. He matches up particularly well with A Silva compared to others because he matches his reach, hand speed, boxing tech and BJJ, the one thing Silva has over him is KO power and this would most likely be the deciding factor but Diaz has something on his side that Silva hasnt faced for a while – complete lack of fear or respect with the attitude to just bring the fight, oh and a pretty solid chin and cardio too. I would love to see it.

well TS, track back, my opinion hasn’t changed!
by kevin on Jun 9, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
ts: I don’t think many people were saying Nick doesn’t have talent. I thought he was a great fighter to watch with a ton of potential when he was in the UFC at the age of 22. His attitude and thuggish behavior have made him unpopular with many fans as a PERSON. I have been REALLY impressed with his last two fights in particular. His fight against Gomi was the stuff of legend.
PanivZoo: C’mon bro, you can’t be serious. Anderson Silva? Diaz is a natural welterweight, and I think he’d be in deep shit with any of the the top five WELTERWEIGHTS in the UFC.
His striking is great, but Anderson’s is MILES ahead, especially when you throw knees, kicks, and the clinch into the equation. Anderson is faster and slicker and does as much damage with one punch as Diaz does with 10. Add the fact that Diaz would no longer have a reach advantage and that he would probably come right after Anderson and you have the makings of a serious mismatch.
Way more fun to watch than Silva/Leites though, I’ll give you that!
by Jeremyjackson on Jun 9, 2009 10:11 PM EDT reply actions
I actually think Nick could handle the AKA boys. Swick for sure, and I think he could outbox Kos, he’d just have to watch the right hand and wild headkick. If Kos goes to the ground, Diaz would latch on to something real quick, probably to the same quickness as the Hazelett triangle on Kos, or even the gogo on Gomi. Not saying he would gogo Kos, but he slapped that sub on 3 seconds after Gomi took him down.
I think Fitch would be able to grind out a decision against him, much like the Diego fight. He would avoid subs, and win on positioning.
Alves and GSP would brutalize him. Especially Alves. GSP maybe not so much, but he’d definitely win.
by Syn on Jun 9, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
lol, Alves would brutilize him but not GSP. Neither would, but you got it backwards right syn?
by kevin on Jun 9, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions
Both guys would hurt him bad, but Alves would do it standing while GSP would do most of it on the ground dropping bombs.

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 10, 2009 12:01 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Alves’s stand up, and leg kicks in particularly would be a big problem for Diaz. Power leg kicks isn’t something GSP has. He’s more of a quick striker. His ground and pound isn’t exactly devastating either. It kind of reflects Diaz’s stand up in the sense that is not super powerful, but eventually all those punches add up. The Fitch fight he beat him up downright, but GSP’s gnp in the Penn fight was pitter patter it seemed to me. I could only bare to watch it that one time live, so I may be wrong.
