MMA Quick Quote: Nick Diaz baited a 'burnt out' Scott Smith

"The fight unfolded like I wanted it to. It went to a third round, which is exactly what I saw in my head. I knew it would go at least halfway past the second round. I figured he was going to stand there and try not to use a lot of energy. I figured he was going to try and catch me with something good. He tried to be slow so I put my hands down, to give him opportunities, so he would come at me. I baited him and forced him to put forth some effort. I needed him to tire out, he is tough. I kept punching him and pushing him. Once he burnt out, the fight was mine."

Top Strikeforce draw Nick Diaz discusses his three round war with Scott Smith at Strikeforce: 'Lawler vs. Shields' on June 6. The wily Diaz obliterated Smith in the stand up and submitted him via Brabo choke in the third round. One has to wonder if a rematch with Robbie Lawler is in the near future considering the history between these two scrappers. Diaz won their first contest by KO and despite a loss to Jake Shields last night, Lawler would be the perfect opponent for the California bad-boy. The question here is whether or not a potential win over Lawler will put him at the top of the food chain.? He will never fight teammate Jaske Shields, so who else is there? Sound off, Maniacs.

Diaz is one bad dude

by RedDog on Jun 7, 2009 6:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nick looked AWESOME in this fight. His strikes thrown were ridiculous and even though people say there is not a lot of power on them it goes to show even tough strikers like Smith can be hurt and dazed by Diaz’s constant peppering.

His movement and confidence in his hands and chin were awesome. I was thinking a couple of times Scott might pull his trademark rabbit out the hat and catch Diaz but it didn’t happen.

Its a shame Diaz and Shields are training partners cos that would make for a great fight from the winners of last night and Diaz would give Shields a great fight on the ground too as he too is a BJJ black belt.

Oh well, whoever gets to fight Diaz next better be ready to be punched in the face and a hell of a lot as well!

I just got a chance to watch the fight video…WOW!!! What a performance. A lot is made over Diaz’s lack of punching power, but to me it looks like he HURTS everyone he punches. His FOCKING body shots are Brutal! No power my ass! What makes Diaz a GREAT striker is that he knows when to not waste energy, and just peeper his opponent, but he also knows when to turn up the heat and DROP BOMBS!!! He throws these pity pat combo’s, and his opponents have to be thinking “this doesnt hurt”….THen BOOM! A POWER SHOT whne they let their guard down a little. Its just beautiful to watch. Nick is an extremely smart fighter. He has the mental edge over most of his opponents and that is a big asset to him.

People think he is a Punk. I find him to be intelligent and calculating! I think half of his antics are just mental warfare….not him being a douche. He drops his hands, sticks his chin out…I dont think he intends to embarress his opponents. I feel that he does that to bait them into making a mistake.

In sports, certain people perform better when emotions are involved. Others, get taken out of their game, by those tactics. The tactics work for Nick, so I have no problem with him doing it, not to mention its very entertaining. Let me give you guys an example: I have played basketball on some pretty high levels in my DAY. Their is a lot of trash talking in basketball. some people step their game up when they are being trash talked by their opponents, others get so mad that they mentally crumble and cant perform to the best of their abilities. I was always GREAT when I got pissed. I could be having the worst game of my life, but as soon as my defender starts talking trash to me, I get FIRED UP, step my game up and ball out! oN THE FLIP SIDE. i WOULD TALK TRASH TO OPPONENTS THAT would just get so damn angry, and I would completely take them out of their game.

Its Mental Warfare baby! Its a big part of all sports and Nick shouldnt take heat from doing it. It works for him, and it gives him an edge. Great performance out of diaz!

why was the finishing submission being called a Brabo choke? I didnt see it on tV so I didn get a good view, but it looked like a RNC to me!

Volume fighter. He’s weird punching style and reach allows him to constantly put hands on guys. I bet his excellent cardio and endurance training allows him not to burn his hands out at his insane work rate. It’s very interesting because this means that unless you’re clearly a much more technical boxer with semi decent wrestling (good doubles or singles because clinch takedowns don’t work) than him so you can threaten whenever he enters that close range also defensively, you’ll get eaten alive. I think that’s why KJ killed him in the standup and nullified his TDs. His chin was also impressive but we always knew that. The only thing i like about his attitude is pretty much what john said. He’s always talking about this being a “technical thing” and i love fighters who see mastery of skills above gassed out brawling or “standing and banging.” Very impressed. Every winner impressed me yesterday especially Riggs.

by NameNotRequired on Jun 7, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, I HATE Riggs, but he definitely impressed me a lot. Of Course, I always felt that Baroni was a CAN, but still, Riggs displayed skills that I never knew he had. Its obvious that he has improved. I always questioned his work ethic. If he can continue to improve, he will be an asset to strikeforce since they are really thin at 170 lbs.

by john on Jun 7, 2009 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, while calling him intelligent is somewhat laughable he is without a doubt a smart fighter. Most of it takes place on a psychological level. He does have that certain mentality that takes him to another eschelon. I really would like to see his name near the top of the P4P list. He has been successful from LW to MW. BJ gets all kinds of pound for pound credit for his appearances in different weight classes while Diaz is actually winning while doing it. Immediately after his fight last night I was thinking a fight between him and the Spider would be legendary. I can only imagine if Diaz would stick his chin out the same way to bait Silva and how Anderson would react to some of the antics. If only we could get that…

by PJJ on Jun 7, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Regarding your first post John = EXACTLY

Nick is EXTREMELY technical with his striking and he has a long reach. Those little “pitter pat” punches do not appear to have much on them, but when they land precisely where he wants them to land and keeps them coming in bucnes, they begin to add up – quickly.

Also, as soon as he sees a big whole, he puts some big power into his stikes. He threw a few vicous rights at Smith and had him cringing/crumbling every time.

And, not only do his antics get into his opponents head, but they can’t feal too confident when the fight is 1 minute deep and they have thrown 1 stike and missed, meanwhile Nick has landed 45 strikes. That is demoralizing. So the opponent knows he can’s submit Nick, so thier only option is a KO, however, Nick has never been KO’d.

The most amazing thing is how young Nick Diaz still is.

Great win for Nick!
I wasn’t thinking him capable to finish Smith and he did.So congrats Diaz.I’m really impress!

I think he needs to stay at middleweight. He looks strong for the division…he is in great shape, isnt drained. I think he looks fabulous as a middleweight. NOt to mention he probably has the best chin in all of strikeforce!

I would love to see Diaz vs. Cung Le! Diaz will destroy so many of the joints in Cung’s legs, Cung wont be able to throw another kick for months! lol

by john on Jun 7, 2009 9:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d love to see Diaz destroy that poser Le, Diaz-Lawler II would be another great fight. I’ve never seen Nick look better than he did in these last two fights, he destroyed a legend in Frank Shamrock and a dangerous striker in Scott Smith. The guy is one of the most entertaining personalities in the sport and is as well rounded as you can get, I don’t see how you can’t like the guy. Diaz-Shields would be a dream match but will only happen on the same card as Andy-Machida in my dreams. Unless the impossible happens, I would be quite happy watching him outclass Lawler and Le, if the latter ever bothers to show his face in MMA again.

by David W-S on Jun 7, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah David, Diaz has looked AMAZING in his last 2 fights. As a nomad who wandered back in fourth between different divisions, I think he has found a home in the middleweight division. I think he is perfect for the middleweight division. Initially I thought he wasnt going to be strong enough to fight at such a high weight, but he has LOOKED amazing. I would like to see him stay as a middleweight and only fight at a different weight if their is a mega fight available out there. As a middleweight I think he would be favored against pretty much all the top guys that affliction has to offer:
Robbie Lawler
Cung Le
He would destroy Riggs in a rematch (yeah, I know riggs fights at 170 lbs.

I would really like to see Diaz matched up against 1 of DREAM’s top middleweights. for example, Great fights for Diaz would be:
Nick Diaz vs. Jacre or
Nick Diaz vs. Mayhem

by john on Jun 7, 2009 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it might be time for Diaz to return to the UFC WW division. He looks huge for welterweight now and the UFC has so many great fighters at that weight.

I think it’s a mistake for him to move up to MW, he’s already a little soft and he’d be giving away his reach and size advantage.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 7, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Nick would go back to the UFC then yeah he should go to WW.But if he stay with Strikeforce he,can do well at MW.

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 7, 2009 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you guys dont think he could compete with world class middleweights like Jacre or Mayhem? I hope to NEVER see Diaz back in the UFC. I like being able to see Nick fight top fighters from organizations throughout the world, in different divisions and catch weights. Think about the fighters he can face, not being tied down by the exclusive UFC contract:
Mayhem
Jacre
Benkie
Mach Sakurai
Robbie Lawler
Vitor
Cung Le
Matt Lindland
Melvin Manhoef
I would love to see him kick, recently cut from the UFC fighter, Jason “the talented Fairy” McDonald.

I think Mayhem vs. Diaz is a fight that strikeforce needs to put together in this next year. Their personalities are a promoters DREAM. I think they match up well in the stand up….and watching those 2 grapple each other would be amazing to watch!

I agree that if he were to return to the UFC, WW would suite him best…but I hope that he doesnt return to the UFC for at least a couple of years. So many interesting match ups at different weights, in different organizations, on different continents for Nick to be In an exclusive relationship with the UFC.lol

by john on Jun 7, 2009 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Haha, good post john. I still like some of the UFC WW match-ups better, but there are some sweet fights there. Belfort would be a bad match-up for Diaz. That showboating shit will get you killed against a puncher like Vitor.

by Jerermyjackson on Jun 7, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He,would definitely get destroyed against Belfort.Sakurai,Lindland and Jacre, would give him a hard time(not sure he,can beat them though). The rest should be a W for him!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 7, 2009 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the list is just as long or longer of the great potential fights in the UFC.

I still don’t know if he can beat top WW/MW guys though.

by ShaiZ on Jun 7, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The thought of Mayhem vs. Diaz makes me giddy. Two of the most animated, well-rounded, talented guys in MMA together in the same ring. I would love it if this found its way onto the Affliction card in August. Hey, ‘the t-shirt guys’ just lost some stock in AA loaning him out to Strikeforce. Maybe they can build it back up with Diaz on loan.

Nick Diaz is no Biotch.

He can move around weight classes easily enough, so I could see a Riggs rematch. Maybe Cung Le’s interm title?

This non-professional CRAP of not wanting to fight a “teammate” has to go. It is fine IF there are other good fights but when teammates start to put a lock on a division and still won’t fight, then it hurts the fans. Wand and Shogun should’ve fought 3 years ago. Fitch and Swick (and maybe Kos) are getting close now.

nobody will hang with nick, unless its a gay stoppage!…my main thoughts though is who the HELL IS JASKE Shields? dont yall have spell checks or what?

Diaz is the man……….. Joe Riggs would be his next fight to straightin out there shit from before.

What do you guys think?

by the man on Jun 7, 2009 11:44 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great fight by Diaz, perfect execution!!!! As much as I hate Joe Riggs he actually looked ok last night, mind you he was only fighting Baroni so I think its tough to figure how much he has improved with the lack of competition last night.

by Spyder on Jun 7, 2009 12:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

diaz lost to karo, riggs, sanchez, and sherk when he was in the ufc. if he goes back does he really have a chance of earning a title shot against GSP?

also, is it just me or does strikeforce only have like three fighers per weight class?

by spitforce on Jun 7, 2009 5:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Forget the UFC. I want to see Nick and Jake on national tv primetime. Let a huge audience see some exciting fighters

by EazyEismydad on Jun 7, 2009 6:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Seems to me Nick is actually concerned with how people precieve him nowadays, maybe he doesnt really want to be the “scumbag” fighter he’s been labled in the past….maybe he’s looking to get back into the big show (UFC), where the real money’s at…..guess he’s starting to mature a little not only as a fighter but as a person too.

by MikeZello on Jun 7, 2009 6:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Doubtful. THe “real” money is being able to pick up fights when and where he wants, be it in another month or two with Strikeforce, heading to Japan again for Dream, or boosting that Affliction card. He can make money by fighting often and not being tied up.

by PJJ on Jun 7, 2009 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

are u stupidNick is making more money in other organizations, what other organization like the ufc will highlight affliction during there show and not ban t-shirts the ufc is stupid as are there fighters most of them, this strike fore was totally kewl and beat the last2 ufc’s go strikeforce i can’t wait to buy strikeforce and affliction not the ufc, hey choices are good and given choices me and many others will not buy ufc over priced hype except when ther is a good fight
