MMA Quick Quote: Jake Shields has no interest in wasting time on Joe Riggs

"I want the big fights from here on out. I think I showed I can fight at both 170 and 185 pounds. Guys are a little bigger then me at middleweight but I’m faster. My jiu-jitsu style is super aggressive...I bring the wrestling mentality of forcing things and making things happen. As far as a fight at 170, I think my fight there would be for a title fight and Joe Riggs is of no concern for me. He's not even worth my time … I’m really not even giving him the time of day."
-- Jake Shields expressed complete disinterest toward a possible match up against Joe Riggs when speaking at the Strikeforce post-fight press conference. Apparently Shields was not impressed with the "Diesel’s" dominating win over "The New York Bad Ass" Phil Baroni. Shields and Riggs were originally scheduled to fight on the "Lawler vs. Shields" card last night; however, that fight was scrapped in favor of the more marquee fight against Robbie Lawler. Riggs expressed his dissatisfaction with the decision, and after his win over Baroni, Riggs told the crowd he still wants a fight with Shields. If Riggs in not a worthy foe for Shields at 170, it will be interesting to see who Strikeforce pits Shields against, assuming the promotion wants to crown a welterweight champion by the end of the year. As for Riggs, his future options also appear scant ... unless, of course, a rematch with Nick Diaz interests both parties. Hmmm ....

No. Do you even think it would be competitive? I honestly don’t think Diaz has a chance against the top guys at 170 or 185. Diaz has above average jits, but, like I posted yesterday, I am not impressed by his striking. GSP has average or better jits, and is much better in the striking department. GSP would have his way with Diaz.
With all that said, I might be biased in my opinion because of my hatred to the Diaz brothers.

It wouls be alot more competitive than your letting on. Diaz Jits is WAY better than GSP. I do think GSP would be faster and Stronger that Diaz, but I would GSP woul want to stay off the matt

Instead of talking about DREAM fights that will NEVER happen…how about we talk about actual Possible DREAM fights. im sure Diaz can bring in a couple of DREAM’s contractually unrestricted fighters.
This is why I should be match maker:
Sheilds vs. Jacre
Diaz vs. Mayhem!!!!!!!!
Nuff SAID!!!
Btw, Happy B-day Kevin! lol i just cashed in on birthday sex a day early! lol

I think Diaz could beat the AKA boys, and give a good fight to Alves and GSP.
Sheilds vs Jacare would be good, and I hope Jacare beats the crap outta him.
Diaz/Mayhem would be Diaz all the way.
Who does Robbie Lawler fight now? I’m not well aware of STrikeforce’s MW roster
by Synyster on Jun 7, 2009 5:23 PM EDT up reply actions
“above average jits.”
do you know how many black belts caesar gracie has given out? 3! Diaz, shields and Dave Terrell.
Did you see how in shape diaz looked not having to cut to LW.
I think it would be a very competitive fight! I also think (know for a fact) he hits really hard. Did you happen to see those pertinent body shots. I’m not saying he’d win (but I think he has a good chance), I’m just throwing out a fight. What would you rather see, Hughes/GSP 3?
by kevin on Jun 7, 2009 7:10 PM EDT up reply actions
He hits hard but more so with great technique and that’s why he’d allow all these wrestlers in the UFC to take him down and control him like they did when he fought in the UFC back in the day..
Being great and beating guys in Strikeforce and other orgs outside of the UFC creates way too much hype around the fighter sometimes, I mean guys like Scott Smith and Robbie Lawler are not even close to being top MW’s, some might think so just cause their fights/finishes are so spectacular!

I’d love to see GSP vs Diaz too btw.. It’s always nice seeing two profiles in the sport go at it!

The crazy thing about watching Diaz fight is how many punch’s he throws per round, there’s like not even 2-3 seconds of dead time, he’s just got a neverending 5 min combo going the whole damn round. I was like WTF ?!?! They didn’t even look all that fast; kind of a wierd speed for timing on his shots I think makes it hard for other fighters to adjust to his style.
by O damn he got caught on Jun 8, 2009 7:59 AM EDT up reply actions
birthday sex? does that mean u do it with the TV off.

I like that fight Kev. Somehow Diaz still does not get the love he deserves. I’ve never been a huge fan of his personality but love him as a fighter. He has one of the best chins in the game. He took some bombs from Smith and was never even wobbled. GSP would probably win via lay and pray but with Diaz’s ability to scramble it could be a all out war with lots of transitions. GSP would have to throw lots of kicks on the feet cuz Diaz’ hands are better. He wouldn’t be able to posture up and throw hard shots on the ground the the risk of getting subbed by one of the best BJJ artists in the game. This fight will most likely never happen but I would love to see it.

I have seen GSP vs Diaz, the fight was quite some time ago when Diaz was in UFC, and of course GSP beat him.

Riggs blows, he couldnt finish Baroni who was gassed after like 3 minutes. I’d like to see him fight Sakurai, thats about the only other good WW outside the UFC
by ---Caesar--- on Jun 7, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions
blows?? he looked great. I thought baroni was gonna take that fight and riggs looked better than he ever has. shields is a chump. he’s got no standup. his win over lawler did not impress me. there’s no doubt he has phenomenal JJ but he’s fooling himself if he thinks he can take legit rounded fighters at 185. I heard someone in his corner during the post fight yell “top 3 p4p”. I literally laughed out loud. Guillotine chokes are absurdly frustrating to watch. I’m calling for it right now…I want Shields vs Diaz.
by Crowls on Jun 7, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Jake shields dont want to fight Riggs because he knows Joe has the tools to beat him and he is making it of like he is to good for him . I think he is afraid of loosing. Step up to the plate Jake are you afraid of getting knocked the f*** out or submited .Same reason that kj noons turned down Nick Diaz.
by Adam on Jun 8, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Fighting = paycheque. If Shields wants to earn some coin he might as well do it against Riggs as anyone else at WW in Strikeforce. Fight who the promoters put in front of you.
by DJ on Jun 7, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions
Either that or step up your game and sign with the UFC. Ya your fighting the top tier guys at 170 and 185 in the organization, but its the minor leagues compared to the UFC.
by WB on Jun 7, 2009 3:39 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree, who is he going to fight now? I feel like Strikeforce and Affliction are just going to keep regurgitating the same guys over and over again. I don’t know how they fix this but its going to become a bigger problem if they want to put on a show a month.
by Fokman on Jun 7, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions
He needs to fight Jay Heiron than now that would be a brawl. Cung Le would rape him in the cage.
by VaginaLuvr on Jun 7, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
heiron makes sense. in my opinion, heiron destroys shields.
oh, and in a tag team fight both shields and diaz together lose to gsp. shouldn’t even be discussed.
by JB on Jun 7, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions
GSP would LNP Diaz to a victory. Diaz is dangerous everywhere and that’s the only way GSP beats him.
by Crowls on Jun 8, 2009 12:48 AM EDT up reply actions
so who are the big fights for him? cung le isn’t fighting, he trains with diaz, shamrock is done, he just beat lawler, scott smith isn’t great, so who? is he trying to get to the ufc? Riggs is about as good as he is gonna find in the strikeforce welter weight class. so if he isn’t gonna go up to middle then who is the big fights he’s talking about?
by Blazy J on Jun 7, 2009 3:28 PM EDT reply actions
What a bitch…
Hey jake shields then why did you except the fight in first place just so you can back out like the grappling bitch that you are???
I tell you as a boxing practioner your scared that joe riggs awesome footwork and punches will fuck you up and joe looked pretty fluid on the ground last night.
No disrespect to bobby but bobby lawler is a crazy brawler and not a technical former pro boxer like riggs.
Free riggs Free armenia free karo

Joe Riggs would make him look bad. Riggs doesn’t get the credit that he deserves. He’s an extremely well-rounded fighter with great stand-up, wrestling and jiu-jitsu. Shields submitting him is certainly a possibility, but I’d see Riggs taking the fight.

I guess Sheilds dosnt know hes overrated, Sheilds is a bitch
by thebending on Jun 7, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions
shields has had like 30 fights…and how many of them are against top 10 guys in his weight class? this dude is the most overated guy to have fought the least top rated guys….
30 fights this guy has had…against who? out of those 30 fights how many of them came against a top 10 guy in the weight class he fought them in? okami?
last night was the only impressive victory he has ever had…
but other than that this guy has gotten to where he is dry humpin subpar fighters to decisions….
yea he has like 4 subs in a row…but that now hes finally equal to his dec victories…10 subs 10 dec victories
regardless of his friendship with nick diaz i bet if strikeforce came to nick and offered him a title shot he would take it…nick is a warrior..hes a fighter…
nick never got a shot in the ufc, he never got a noons rematch, le is too busy “pretending” to be a fighter in movies instead of fighting…..so if strikeforce came to nick and said…hey man…you’ve been fighting a long time and you deserve your shot at a belt, heres your shot for gold, do you want the title shot?
nick would take that shit
shields taps out nick i’ll suck his cock
by HellaHectic on Jun 7, 2009 4:57 PM EDT reply actions
The truth of the matter is we do not know if he is overrated. He fought for elite xc and now strikeforce. He has only fought four legit fighters. He has a decision win over yushin okami and carlos condit. Both fights could have gonna either way. We have to remember these guys are fighting for strikeforce for a reason. The ufc didnt want them. Diaz has gotten better but he is a gatekeeper in the ufc. He beat a washed up overrated frank shamrock and scott smith who was run out of the ufc for loses. lets not forget Diaz battle good in the ufc but lost 4 times. He is not ready for a gsp
by lance2576 on Jun 7, 2009 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions
shields is a bitch, who needs to go to ufc and fight some top ten welterweights for sure.
by BlitzkrieG on Jun 7, 2009 5:37 PM EDT reply actions
Diaz did get a shot in the ufc and he was subpar. Losing to riggs, parisyan, and i think sanchez. Yea diaz is ok but when it comes to top 5 competition he loses. Then he called out gsp saying he has a flaming vag and that was the last we seen of him in the ufc.
by desperus on Jun 7, 2009 5:48 PM EDT reply actions
i was meaning title shots…and the thing about the fighters you’ve listed is that they are still the same fighters now as they were back then…they havent evolved…nick has
by HellaHectic on Jun 7, 2009 6:27 PM EDT up reply actions
the others haven’t evolved? i guess you are right; parisyan is still the big sack of crap he was when he BEAT diaz. sanchez has evolved; into a lightweight. and hell, riggs straight up evolved himself out of a UFC contract; talented for sure.
diaz is crap. and against a real top ten, he loses. the following fighters beat diaz and shields at 170: alves, fitch, gsp, swick, davis, etc etc.
by JB on Jun 7, 2009 7:59 PM EDT up reply actions
karo vs diaz was a very close fight and karo wouldnt stand a chance with diaz now.. You probably know nothing about joe riggs personal problems he has delt with.. Injuries and drug addiction can cause any good fighter to not perform to their ability. Sanchez was a better fighter then and IMO still is.
fitch, swick, davis NO way any of those guys beats diaz~… That is just ridiculous! swick and davis are freaking gatekeepers man…
Diaz is a real top 10 fighter
by ItsNormlToSmokePot on Jun 7, 2009 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions
Truth is…
Nick Diaz is a potty mouth just like his loser bro.
Shields would Defintly lose to GSP, A. Silva, W. Silva, R. Franklin, Akiyama. He would have a 30% chance against Kang, FITCH, KOSCHECK, Swick, Alves…
Maybe even Serra, Jits wis it would be = and Matt has heavier hands right??? He might squeek out a win vs Karo and thats a big might… Hughs I think he could beat just matchup wise.
I hate to say it being a Judoguy but in general groundwork seems to be taking a backseat to striking as of late in the UFC. Doesnt everyone find that KO’s are happening more and more.
I like that Brett Rogers killed AA. Looks good on the boxer wanna be. I can see in a yrs time, Heath Herring vs Brett Rogers for some reason.
by SHAMWOW on Jun 7, 2009 11:18 PM EDT up reply actions
Eh, i was more impressed with Riggs than Shields last night..
by Green Inferno on Jun 7, 2009 5:51 PM EDT reply actions
WHY?
Riggs dominated a never really that good Phil Baroni who once again gassed and Shields moved up in weight landed for him some decent strikes and submitted a top middleweight in just over two minutes.
by massiveamounts on Jun 7, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions
I like lawlor. He tries to always bring it. Why do you say he is a top middleweight. What wins has given him this credit. Ninja rua, Joey V. Who has he beat to be considered a top middle weight. Just cause websites pick other companies fighters as top fighters doesnt mean they are. He like most was cut from the ufc. He has wins over Chris lytle and frank trigg with loses to diaz, shields, Pete Spratt, evan tanner and mayhem miller. He has never beat a ranked opponent. I still like to watch him fight
by lance2576 on Jun 7, 2009 8:35 PM EDT up reply actions
His losses to Spratt and Tanner were when he was a totally different fighter. He was 21 when he lost to Spratt and Tanner was his first fight at 185.
What does that really have to do with the fighter he is today. Oh wait let me guess your top 10 or probably top 20 fighters at middleweight would all be from the UFC.
You probably think Nate Quarry would beat Lawler.
Robbie got caught in a submission by a BJJ Black belt whose completely underrated. At this point in his career Shields is probably top 10 P4P.
Oh and by the way saying you like a fighter and then proceeding to bash him is not a good way to try and cover up your obvious UFC nuthugging. Get over it you either like this sport or you don’t. Not just the UFC.

wow, way to be a pussy, Shields. the more he talks, the less i like him.

holy cow, jake is a big shot now, he should be fighting ppl like gsp and anderson silva
by Rabid Roger on Jun 7, 2009 6:39 PM EDT reply actions
it’s a shame lawler lost, diaz vs lawler II would’ve been sick….Sheilds should STFU and square up with Diesel..betcha he wouold have taken that fight if he lost to Robbie
by MikeZello on Jun 7, 2009 6:42 PM EDT reply actions
Im with Shields on this one. I instantly yawn at the prospect at Shields vs Riggs. Shields needs to fight top WW/MWs, not a jobber like Riggs.
by UK_Chris on Jun 8, 2009 12:21 PM EDT reply actions
Man am I in the twilight zone or what? Diaz owning gsp in the bjj department, are you guys nuts? He just destroyed 2 of the highest level bjj fighters out there, penn and serra, diaz would get his ass kicked, diaz isn’t even a 10 ten fighter….
