Brett Rogers: Andrei Arlovski knockout at Strikeforce ...

... "will get me into the top 10:"

"I’ve always said that I can hurt people with my power and I proved it again tonight. Hopefully, this fight will get me into the top 10. Once, I touch you it is over. I will fight anybody.’’

Brett Rogers, a who recently retired as a tire technician at Sam's Club to pursue a career in mixed martial arts full time, talks about being recognized as one of the best in class after pasting former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovski in just 30 seconds at Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" at the Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Missouri. It was an enormous stepping stone for the Team Bison-trained fighter on a big stage, which also kept his perfect record (10-0) intact. "The Grimm" has won nine of those 10 contests via (technical) knockout and only one of them (Ron Humphrey) made it past the first round. Strikeforce ringside announcer Mauro Ranallo speculated after the fight that Rogers could likely return to action against the promotion's heavyweight champion, Alistair Overeem, as soon as August -- another serious test for Rogers if it pans out. So, is Rogers now a top tier heavyweight ... one who could give "Demolition Man" a run for his money? Let us hear your thoughts in the comments section below, Maniacs.

You have to respect his power. His ground game is yet to be determined but if he hits you you are getting hit by a true heavyweight.

by getrawbc on Jun 7, 2009 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I looked up where he trains now that Team Bison has folded. Only notable trainer is fn Sergio Cunha (shogun’s trainer which is surprising) but their BJJ guys are all purples and browns and two TMA guys with grappling backgrounds. I am surprised he didn’t seek out better schools here in MN for his ground game.

Dood!

AA cost me some serious scratch last night! What the hell is wrong with him!

Anyway, Diaz looked great, Shields did what I thought he’d do, and the event was pretty darn good.

I’ve never been to QC dude, but I’ve been to Montreal twice and I love that city. Quebec City looks pretty wicked too, I’ve seen it on TV. My French isn’t that great, though.

I will definitely let you know if I am heading back out that way, bro! My extended family all live out East so I will be, sooner or later. And of course, if you’re heading to Van the same invitation applies.

not really fair to say he has a glass jaw alot of dudes would have ko’d after a couple of haymakers.

by ruanfiy on Jun 7, 2009 11:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he has a glass jaw, everytime he gets hit with a half way descent shot ,he folds

by scott on Jun 7, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree! The Fedor bomb would have knocked out a horse but Rogers threw no massive shots last night at all. AA’s jaw is 100% glass!

by attakdog on Jun 7, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

every time? he went toe to toe way rizzo for 3 rounds with some taken some pretty decent shots sure he ko’d but that was a pretty good shots he was taken as well.

by ruanfiy on Jun 7, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His problem isn’t a his glassjaw, it’s that his skills have deteriorated to the point that anyone can hit it.

by chefdaddy on Jun 7, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

His skills haven’t deteriorated at all. What are you talking about he’s always had no head movement in his stand up and been hittable. It’s just more apparent when he’s fighting big punchers with power like Fedor and Rogers.
Go back and watch the fight with Werdum. He hit Arlovski plenty of times but he doesn’t have a lot of pop in his punches so he couldn’t take advantage of Arlovski’s jaw.
Andrei should’ve just got a body lock and tried to take Rogers down and get on top and pound him. Rogers only real shot was to blast Andrei with a big punch and he accommodated him by standing right in front of him.

………..glassjaw………….

by The5thBeatle on Jun 7, 2009 11:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have no idea why he took a fight like this on such short notice against an opponent like Grim, that is not taking your career seriously that is just throwing everything away and earning quick money, just like Koscheck…
the more you fight the closer you are to getting stopped, even if you’re the better fighter..

by RoB on Jun 7, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree “glassjaw”. I gave him the benefit of the doubt after the Fedor fight because that punch would have felled an elephant, but Rogers didn’t hit him with anything special last night, the one that staggered him in the first place certainly wasn’t.

No matter how much smoke Freddy Roach blows up his ass, his boxing isn’t that great and he’s training it to the detrement of his other MMA skills.

I think he’s gotta adapt his style if he’s to survive as a top tier fighter. I believe AA needs to train less on the boxing and remember he’s an MMA fighter and go back to his Sambo roots a bit more or the same thing’s gonna keep on happening.

by attakdog on Jun 7, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no he needs to train more boxing and get some boxing defense and a new manager!
a fighter isn’t just gonna bounce back like that after getting KO’d in their last fight, Rogers was smart and went right at it in the beginning of the fight.. It’s all in the head son!

by RoB on Jun 7, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree RoB, he trains too much boxing and just aint that good at it! I’m sure Freddy Roach hasn’t just woke up this morning and thought “Sh!t we forgot to train defence”. He’ll be training it all the time. I think he needs to try and exploit his natural sambo base and work some submissions or some gnp into his game, because if he keeps fights standing he’s gonna clock up some embarassing losses with that glass jaw of his!

by attakdog on Jun 7, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he needs to work on both, take some time off, then get back to becoming more well rounded, when is the last time he actually used his sambo, alot of these fighters you can tell they get use KO people, and they start simplifing their technique, look at Rampage, look at Rashad, look at Chuck, now look at Arlovski.
Maybe that is one of the reason Fedor is so vocal about wanting to be able to compete in Sambo,he knows it helps him maintain a more balanced attack, plus he likes to represent his country

Not bad Scott!Good post!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 7, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree scott, he thinks he’s a KO artist and has over-simplified his technique and when was the last time he used his Sambo???

If I was AA coming off a massive KO loss and I knew I had a glass jaw and brilliant Sambo, and I was fighting an unbeaten 19 stone banger with 9 out of 10 KO wins, I would not be looking to stand and trade with him! I’d be looking for a takedown and a joint lock at the first available opportunity.

by attakdog on Jun 7, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Last time I remember him going for a submission was against Tim in the first fight, and that was a long time ago.Another thing that shows he has not been working on becoming more well rounded ,look how Roy Nelson was controlling him on the ground,it almost looked like he was clueless, how long has Arlovski been competing in MMA and that is how he defends himself on the ground

@daftmania “say goodbye to your career AA”

by daftmania on Jun 8, 2009 5:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, from here on out, i think Grim should only be matched up against top opponents. He needs to be fighting guys like Werdum or Alistar because the strikeforce heavyweight division is thin with top fighters.

I would love to see Tim sylvia be loaned out by Affliction to fight Grim in strikeforce. That would be a very interesting match up.

At the very least, Grim should get to fight someone like Yvel, Buentello, Big country, Ben Rothwell or even Jeff MOnson

I dont know if the Pitbull will be ready to fight again come August 1st…but I think Arlovski vs. Gilbert Yvel would be an amazingly Brutal stand up war….and I for one am keeping my fingers crossed that I will hopefully get to see it on the Affliction 3 card!

by john on Jun 7, 2009 10:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

AA vs Yvel is a good match up John!I don’t know why but i still, would love to see AA vs Overeem’s or get a rematch with Rizzo too!I don’t thing that AA’s done.He seems to always drop 2 loss in a row and then go on a 5 to 6 win streaks!
But he does have a questionable chin!

But to be honest,Alpha, I hope you are right,he is one of my favorite fighters and it really sucked watching what transpired last night.I remember having the same feeling after he lost to Tim in the third fight, except then he just looked scared to get hit.I just do not see him recovering from that last night,2 brutal KO in a row

by scott on Jun 7, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 7, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He just needs to take some time off,get his barings, but the way it looks ,he is going to have a quick turnaround, and be boxing in a few weeks,so he better hope, for his career sake,he can somehow pull the win out ,if he gets KO in the boxing match, there is no way he will be able to come back from that, his MMA career will be over and boxing would be finished before it even got started

by deuce 4 on Jun 7, 2009 12:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This fight is actually a bad thing for Rogers. He doesn’t have enough ring time to fight against better HWs. This was a stylistically great matchup and all the external factors were in his favor – he didn’t have a job to go back to, Glass chin, Arlovski’s back habit of moving straight back when pressured, Arlovski’s tendency to have lukewarm performances after a loss, etc… If you guys see the people rogers was fighting before he got to elite then you’d quickly realize he’s not ready for the likes of Alistair. If his management was smart, they would hold the reigns back and have him fight guys on his levels so he can flex all aspects of his game before moving up – like Jon Jones fighting scrub wrestler even though he beat Bonnar. Otherwise, he’ll end up being another Sokoudjou getting merked by guys he’s not ready for.

by NameNotRequired on Jun 7, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that is a good match up,but they are both trying to get their careers back on track, and that way only one of them, gets back on track

by scott on Jun 7, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I said he wouldn’t win if he got hit first especially with Grimms power. It doesn’t really matter a whole lot how far up th rankimgs you are if your if you let a heavy handed opponent connect on your chin first. The samething will happen again next time if he doesn’t land his shots first, it will not matter how much time he takes off.

by Ade on Jun 7, 2009 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes it will cause the reason AA didn’t throw anything was because he was scared from his last KO against Fedor…

by DownUnder on Jun 7, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Was it just me, or when Rogers was asking for respect after the fight, it sounded like Fedor nd Barnett didn’t really give him too much. I could be wrong but to me it almost sounded as if both made excuses for Arlovski losing rather then Rogers winning. Fedor said Arlovksi had the wrong game plan and Barnetts said “Arlovski shoulda won the fight, but made the mistake we all know he makes. I wasn’t totally surprised casue i thought Arlovki would make that mistake”. To me it almost sounds like they still are giving much credit to Rogers, I could be wrong, but that my opinion.

Personally, I’d take Arlovski in rematch, he really didn’t look like himself. IMO. he too Rogers to lightly, his leg kick was thrown almost effortlessly and he was much more flat footed in this fight then the Fedor right. Arlovski almost looked liked he wanted to get in and out. If they fought again I would expect Arlovski to move much more and prob cut down to 235.

AA is no better now than when he got KO’D by a Rizzo jab. He also lost to Timmy twice…another putz. He never quite lived up to his potential. Brett is the heavy weight divisions Rashad. Overeem puts him to sleep then we never have to hear about him again.

by fnuts on Jun 7, 2009 10:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

GASP! Arlovski has a weak chin? News to me, start the prints!

I know the outcome would suggest otherwise, but Arlovski is a ten times better fighter then Rogers, he just happens to have the chin of a 5year old girl.(Tho at this point I would take the girl in a pillow fight via KO). Rogers will be forgotten soon enough, i’ll give him his credit, but I don’t see anything promising about him. All HW’s hit like a truck, so his power is nothing amazing.

Where is all the love today AA nuthuggers??? Evry fight he goes into most people on this site think he will win and that he is one of the greatest the next day its all about hating………whats up with that? I cant stand AA & think he is highly over rated but I post that all the time, my story never changes……AA is a big pussy!!!!! And WAR Jake Sheilds, I knew he would stop him by choke, Lawler is a tough guy but just does not have the skill to hang with a real MMA guy like Sheilds. That was sweet win for him. War Diaz someone finally exposed Scott Smith for what he really is…….A standup guy that cant fight on the ground, absolutely loved these fights.

Its because most of the same people say that Fedor has been facing great competition in Tim and Arlovski because they are former UFC champs when it has been clear all along they are second rate, past it and overated.
Barnett is in the same boat, second rate fighter who hasnt done anything decent in MMA for years. Wake up Fedor worshipers these three guys had their hayday over 4 years ago in 2005, the sport and the devision has moved on.

Massive suprise to me the fight ended the way it did. I feel for AA, going from one of the best in the world, to now basically nowhere.

That said, I dont see Rogers beating Overeem. Unlike AA, Overeem is a 100% serious standup fighter (just watch his K1 fights) and has lots of experiance against the best. Overeem will win by TKO.

Arvloski vs Grimm

I picked Arvloski and sucks that he went down. I kept telling my friends that Grimm was the hungrier fighter so we will see what happens and then bam…bam… bam… its over. One thing i noticed is that Arvloski came out to the ring with only Michael Moore. which i think sucks cause i dont remember him knowing anything about the ground. AA came in for a quick check and now realized as you started to see him tear at the end that he needs to stop bullshitting and start training harder. He has been training only on boxing and is still getting knocked out.

Lawler Vs Shields

Pissesd me off that Lawler lost but shields is pretty slick on the ground. not to much to say about this fight.

Diaz Vs Smith

Fight was awsome. Though ive stated way back in the day when diaz fought josh neer that i hate his stand up. Shit works. i dont like it but it works. and diaz can take a punch. he is going to be champ soon. fight of the night in my opinoin.

Baroni vs riggs

Riggs impressed me in this fight. He looked like how many people were talking about him back in the day. Many trainers said he has the skills to be champ but does not put it together in the cage. well yesturday showed me that if he keeps that shit up he may get real close. he was on point and was very impressive. i did go for baroni though. = (

Randleman vs whitehead

Whitehead looked good but randleman should have went all out on that punch…..

In the end i was extremely impressed with the production of the show. Was impressed. Good job Scott Coker cause this show was exciting and really didnt have any flaws like that past elite xc events. compu strike was awsome and so were the demonstrations on how to end the fight. cool beans.

This guy is just another KIMBO, throws wild powerful haymakers and NOTHING else. He’s garbage at every aspect of the game.

Unless he fights another glassjaw next time, he will lose badly.

Don’t forget…if the fight lasted 30 seconds he would’ve gassed!

Arlovski has been knocked out in 27 percent of his fights. So why does everyone hate on Sylvia and not as much Arlovski?
Soooo overrated.

Before he fought Fedor I stated he wasn’t a top 10 yet a top five HW fighter, this really proves Fedor proved nothing by beating AA. In the UFC AA is around the calibure of a Herring at best. Yes he has great talent, his offence is wicked deadly with out a doubt a top ten calibure problem is his defence is suspect combined with his “glass jaw” he really doesn’t stand a chance with most well rounded HW fighters that can either sub you are have the KO power to finish you. I wasn’t suprised at this outcome. I don’t want to take anything away from Rogers I think he should be a top 10 and I believe AA is the gate keeper to the top ten?

Wouldn’t that mean that UFC has a weak HW division since AA not only came from the UFC but also was a former champion? Both Arlovski and Sylvia were champions for about 2 years. Right now Brock is the champ after beating Herring (who is nowhere near top 20 anymore), and Couture (should he even be fighting at 46?).

I think it was a early stoppage if you watch it again aa isn’t totally out he had his hands holding himself up, granted he probly still would of lost but they should of let it go alittle longer who knows maybe aa could have pulled off a leg lock.
