MMA Quick Quote: Phil Baroni knows how to enhance his performance

"I know it to be a fact, man, especially when it comes to taking punches. You take punches better when you abstain from, ah … punching your own loads out ... I’m not a scientist. [Not having sex before a fight] makes you fuckin’ mean, I’ll tell you that much. I’m lean and mean right now. It fuckin’ works. You don’t think so, then don’t do it — you’re not a fighter anyway, so who cares? ... I more than [make it up to my wife] when I don’t have a fight. My wife could use a break anyway. It was a lot easier when I wasn’t married; you could just bring ‘em in the room, one after another, line ‘em up, like when I was in Japan. But I’m married now, so the wife needs a break once in a while."
-- Phil Baroni plans to take out his sexual frustration on Joe Riggs' face this weekend during their 170-pound slugfest, which is slated for the Showtime televised main card at Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis. Mo., on June 6. "Diesel" has accused the "New York Bad Ass" of using other performance-enhancing agents such as steroids leading up to the match, causing Baroni to go ballistic on several media calls and other interviews. Not the case says Baroni, just some good old fashioned abstinence.

anyone catching Fedor sitting right behind the lakers bench last night at game 1 of the NBA finals?

No, that game lost my interest pretty quickly. What color sweater was he wearing?

the only man i saw was Kobe Bryant… no, but i read that he was going to the Lakers game earlier this week in something that Alpha posted.. not a big deal though, Fedor is pretty much nothing when you compare him to NBA stars..

Was he eating 2 ice cream cones at the same time like a 10 year old with hypoglycemia? If so…that was Fedor alright.

Pfft, 10 NBA’ers would crush Fedor.
2 of them at once would stand a pretty good chance. Once you get to 4 or 5, it would be rape.

Someone should put together a montage or a slideshow of all the lovely sweaters Fedor wears. Can we change his nick name to Paddington Bear?

I hardly think that Fedor is nothing next to ANYBODY much less some NBA stars. MMA is the fastest growing sport in the world and Fedor has god like status in it.

I love Rogans quote about fighting and basketball:
“If you’re playing basketball with a guy and a guy slam dunks the ball in your face, you can always say, ’You know what, man? I can still kick your (butt).” "When someone kicks your (butt), you can’t say, ‘Hey man, I can slam dunk a basketball on you.’ "
-Joe Rogan

yeah god like status in MMA, but The UFC is what most people are watching when it comes to MMA and he’s not in it.. trust me he’s a nobody compared to alot of athletes..
by RoB on Jun 5, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions
Yea just like Overeem was in trouble with them what 5-6 security guards? Please; I give Fedor a 50/50 chance against the entire team! How many guys that don’t even train to fight are gonna take a Fedor hook to the jaw and still be standing? Not many.
by O damn he got caught on Jun 5, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
um 50/50 against the whole team would be a little crazy, if they came from all angles at the same time then they would kill him with kicks and stuff.. remember that these are big and tall mofo’s..

Basketball players are the biggest pussies going, they bump into each other and fall on the floor like they got hit by a truck.
They slap each other instead of fight and only one time have I seen a basketball player throw a good punch and it was at a referee, someone who weighed 100 pounds less.
They are the most feminine acting athletes of all, crying after every missed foul and spending more time on their looks than their linguistic capability.

If Fedor is taking on the Lakers, I got Fedor. Hell, I got Fedor taking the Magic. The only one giving him trouble would be D. Howard, but that wouldn’t even last long.
by Jeff on Jun 5, 2009 5:52 PM EDT up reply actions
i would have to agree i would give the edge to fedor against the whole team, maybe they could dog pile on him to hold him down would be there best chance, anything less than 5 of them fedor no problem.
by roy on Jun 5, 2009 6:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Those of you saying Fedor would lose are missing an important aspect. Fedor would be armed, literally, he would rip off Paul Gasol’s arm and start beating the rest of the team with it. I say he finishes off the Lakers in about 87 seconds and then moves onto the Magic.
Fedor wins the series in one.
by DDT on Jun 5, 2009 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions
DirtyML, that’s part of the game, you know getting your opponent fouled out and getting free throws is smart..
stick to MMA cause you’re wrong buddy.. you know other sports isn’t about throwing punches so why the hell would somebody throw a punch in the NBA? they would be fined and get suspended.. what happens when somebody uses a baseball bat and punches a hole in a mixed martial artists head?? is he all that then too..
by RoB on Jun 5, 2009 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions
Don’t really know if you were trying to make sense or just took half the words out of 4 different points and jumbled them together.
Part of the game is not diving like a baby every play.
The sport isnt about punching and kicking but if you scroll up and read (Clearly not a strong point for you) you will see that people were discussing if Fedor fought an NBA team.
I don’t know what your last sentence was about, but stop smoking rocks.
by DirtyML on Jun 5, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah and you were clearly trying to make it out as Fedor and other MMA fighters are much cooler and better athletes because they fight in MMA and NBA fighters are like little girls that fall to the ground when it’s really just a part of the game, if you get pushed you fall that’s what sports are like today in 2009, you have to show to the ref that you got fouled for him to call for it..
by RoB on Jun 5, 2009 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions
stop being a MMA cool boy.. It started with me calling Fedor a nobody compared to the NBA stars which he basically is and then somebody brought up the fact that Fedor would mop the floor with the entire team as if that made him cool somehow..
by RoB on Jun 5, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions
In the US, Fedor probabaly is a nobody compared to most NBA players but anywhere else and I’d give Fedor the edge because basketball isn’t really big outside the US, barely anyone watches it in the UK (which is unfortunate because it’s the one sport that Newcastle are good at so there’s noone to boast to), I can’t even name 5 players.
by David W-S on Jun 5, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I know David, but the NBA stars are making huge amounts of money and are considered top athletes and big stars worldwide even if the sport of Basketball itself isn’t that big.. lets put it this way to make it all clear, all my friends basically know every Premier League player (star or not) and barely none of them knows who Fedor is, MMA isn’t getting the same media exposure as other sports are getting.. The UFC is growing everyday but Fedor isn’t even in the promotion, he’s playing in league 2 or something if we would compare it to football..
by RoB on Jun 5, 2009 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree, MMA is not getting much exposure at all, the only coverage is on the UFC, which gets about as much as pro wrestling. Nobody reports on any other MMA group here, they even call the sport “Ultimate Fighting”, and the local promotions advertise “Ultimate Fighting” or “Cage Fighting”, never “Mixed Martial Arts” events so as far as most people are concerned UFC is the sport. Fedor doesn’t get anywhere near the coverage that top sportsmen do in the West but it’s a different story in the East. He’s more of a cult figure than a genuine celebrity.

RoB i Fond a beautiful statement of TITO yesterday…
"Its funny how people have counted me out already, because I lost the current champ, who have I lost to since then?. To be honest I would be more than willing to have a rematch with Machida, in my fight against him – he was running the whole time but at times he was wasting energy and I could feel that I was slowly wearing him down. I could tell he [Machida] starting fading in the third round, if it was a five round fight I’m fairly confident I would’ve beaten him in the later rounds".
“The thing is he’s never gone past the third round before and that’s a big deal when you’re fighting the elite in MMA, going into championship rounds really test your cardio and that’s where I feel I would really have the advantage. If Dana could put his personal issues aside for once and I probably would be the LHW champ right now”.
“I’ve said it before countless number of times I will re-sign with UFC, as long as Dana isn’t the president of the UFC anymore until then I will be more than happy to go fight for someone else. You know I’m still very much relevant in the LHW divison and I will prove it to everyone once I step back in there”.
by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 5, 2009 11:56 PM EDT up reply actions
you know what Tito is telling the truth, that isn’t a big deal at all.. that was exactly what i saw too! the more i think of it the better Tito gets, he beat Rashad, he would beat Jardine and Wanderlei for sure, anybody who has eyes could see that, and he beat Forrest more injured than ever! I would love to see a rematch with Machida because he knows his game now, and he knows that he can’t finish Tito, so a 5-rounder would be awesome!! even Joe Rogan said that right after the buzzer, “Man i wish this was a 5-rounder!”
he might not become the world champ but he would definitely be a serious contender if Dana did the same thing with Tito as he does with his other fighters, which is giving them title shots after lamea$$ wins..
the fun thing about it is that marketable fighters (Lesnar, Griffin because of Tuf, Shogun, Liddell) always seems to be on the fastlane to a title shot! and Tito’s is a bigger draw than any of them if pushed…
by RoB on Jun 6, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions
You know john just hates Tito,so he will not agree with anything Tito said.On the other point of the story ,in a way it seemed like he was sort of reaching out to the UFC,then he went back to saying if Dana got fired.Well we all know that is not going to happen.
Dana and Tito both say they want what is best for MMA and their fans, well how about you guys just kiss and make up already, the fans want to see Tito back in the UFC,love him or hate him ,you still want to see him perform.Tito no matter what you think is still relevant in the LHW division, his record proves it.All the other top fighters have to lose over and over again ,before people start calling them irrelevant, how many times did it take for people to realize Chuck was done. The UFC should let him prove his relevance or lack there of.Tito helped build UFC,there is a very good chance that there would not be a UFC without the likes of Tito and Chuck,That big house Dana lives in ,that Ferrari you drive ,Tito and Chuck paid for it.

by DJ on Jun 5, 2009 12:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know I think its cool that he’s saying this is his pre game superstition. I like to know what a figher does before a fight to get his head in the right place. GSP tweaks his nips, Lyoto drinks his urine, and Philly keeps his johnny dry. Its almost like these guys have gotten hit in the face too many times and now they think they win fights based on these weird little quirks. Lyoto’s is the only one that kind of makes sense, it might clean your your body making it easier to stay healther ect… but its still interesting to know these things about the fighters. I wonder if it works the same way for women, should they not have sex to prevent being KO’d?
by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 5, 2009 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s not superstition, but a fact. It’s just not talked about.

Baroni is such a joker. If MMA is trying to gain respect from people out there that think its like a human cock fight then they need to let guys like him go. This guy is nothing more than a steroid induced bouncer that I personally think gives the sport a bad name. Joe Riggs VS Phil Baroni……..this has cock fight written all over it, I would like to know were MMA is involved in this fight, its an F’ing joke. I have been a fan of MMA ever since I saw UFC 1 and lately I think we are going to have to change its name to Stand Up Street Fighting. I hate the way MMA is going at this point in time, there are way to many standup fights were guys get KO’D!!!! WAR AOKI, MAIA & FEDOR FOR KEEPING MMA ALIVE.

Spyder,
There are many more guys that are “good” for MMA. However, to touch on the stand up, promoting MMA is a business, and stand up fights make casual fans watch. Casual fans bring in more money, and money is the name of the game.
If you want real grappling and BJJ, check out some local No GI or ADCC events.

I love the ground game but stand up fights are fun to watch as well. I’m a fan of all aspects of the sport, personally I don’t see the point of watching if you dislike the striking or grappling sides of the sport as there are specialised sports that would suit these fans better. I like to see guys fight to win, using the skills that are best suited to win that fight, so I like to see fighters with good striking keep it on the feet but it annoys me when excellent grapplers do a Gurgel in order to make the fight exciting.
I’m no Baroni fan and at times like this he acts like a complete prat but after the dignified way he behaved at Cage Rage when that moron headbutted him and the slapper flipped him off for KO’g her can bf, I have respect for him and there are other guys giving the sport a worse name than Baroni. He’s just trying to hype the fight and build up a fanbase based on this wacky persona, deep down he does respect the sport.
