Michael Bisping: Rampage could 'definitely' beat Lyoto Machida

Props: The Sun

Quoteworthy:

"Machida looks great right now he's finally stopping people. He's not taking a lot of damage and he's looking very, very impressive. He'll be a tough fight for anyone but I'm sure we'll help Rampage put together a good game plan when he comes to fight him. He is very, very good and is a tough nut to crack but he's certainly not unbeatable by any stretch of the imagination — Rampage could definitely do it. I actually asked the UFC if I could fight Machida after I fought Elvis Sinosic in Manchester [in 2007]. I fancied fighting him but it didn't happen for one reason or another — but what I'm trying to say is that nobody in this sport is unbeatable. If you come in with a great game plan and study his fights, everyone has got weaknesses."

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 3 light heavyweight winner and coach of season nine, Michael Bisping, pegs fellow Wolfslair product and former light heavyweight champion Quinton "Rampage" Jackson as the man to topple the seemingly invincible Lyoto Machida. "The Dragon" slayed Rashad Evans at UFC 98 in dominating fashion and continues to remain undefeated while looking more and more dangerous with every fight. Will Jackson have a chance? Or will his feud with "Sugar" be his undoing? A lot can happen in the next six months...like a title defense against Mauricio "Shogun" Rua -- who I'm sure Jackson would love to see for a second time in his career.

…and this coming from a guy that’s going to get his head kicked in by Henderson. Whatever.

by UFC Champ on Jun 4, 2009 10:14 AM EDT reply actions

well I got Bisping by decision.
Lyoto by KO (over Rampage
If Damian Maia, GG etc can take a few years off of BJJ tournaments, why can’t Fedor take a few years off from sambo? On the flip side, take that one thing out of the contract, but keep the championship clause in, we get Fedor for a very long time destroying UFC HW’s!
.
I had a bad dream last night (I’m being serious). I dreamt that Fedor was going to fight the winner of Brock/Mir. Brock won (I was pissed and that was nightmare enough), but as the Lesner/Fedor match got closer, I was more and more nervous that Fedor was going to lose to Brock. I never got to the fight itself, but I was genuinely nervous that the TUF/WWE era of fans were going to be so excited, while those of us who actually watched pride, watch dream (or every other mma show) were going to be let down!

Bisping “AKA BisBing” can say whatever he wants. The fact is, Rampage could have been fighting for the title in Sept, but turned down the chance to “settle his business with Rashad.” Page can say what he wants, but I think he is hoping by some mericle, someone else with beat Chida so he doesn’t have to risk taking an ass whooping like Sugar. I really hope Page is looking past Evans, cause he will end up face-down, asleep (and I hate Evans). Of course, this prediction is coming from Bisping, not Page, so maybe he has more sense then that. Bisping is a tool.

by Cole on Jun 4, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Bisping “AKA BisBing” is a tool. Page had his shot at Chida but turned it down because he saw what happened to Evans. Page is hoping someone else will knock off the Dragon (won’t happen anytime soon) so he won’t have to risk taking an ass whooping like Sugar. They can call it whatever they want, but he ducked the fight. At least this is coming from Bisping and not Rampage. Maybe Page has a little better grip on reality, and Bisping is just talking out his arse.

by Cole on Jun 4, 2009 11:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Rampage is ducking Machida or it could be that Rampage was asked by Dana white to coach on TUF with Evans. They is alot more marketable with the drama between them compared to Rampage and Machida being on the show, especially considering the viewers will be drawn in by kimbo and former NFL players.

I had that dream to only it was Selma Hayek and Reese Witherspoon fighting over me and in the end we had a threesome.

Fedor will never fight in the UFC.

THeir is a really good Ariel Hawani interview with Arlovski that was done on June 3. I highly suggest everyone giving it a read!

by john on Jun 4, 2009 10:28 AM EDT up reply actions

YOU guys NEED to go read the ARLOVSKI interview I just posted. Arlovski is typically one of the worst guys to interview…He reminds me of Robbie Lawler with an accent when doing interviews. BUt Ariel actually got him to talk, and Arlovski went into depth about a bunch of different topics. Its easily the Best Arlovski interview that I have ever read. For those to lazy to use the link,Mania actually allowed to me to post the transcript of the interview in its entirety under the Fedor fox news thread! Give it a read, and you guys can thank me later! lol just joking, but seriously…GO READ IT!!!!

WE all know what this guy thinks. He is so delusional. EVERY fight on TUF, the UK was the beter fighter and should win, NO MATTER WHO picks the fight. A UK or Wolfslair fighter WILL NEVER LOSE. EVERY fight he or a teammate is in will win and could never lose.

Why did Rampage pass on a title shot then???? Oh yeah, he wanted to wait a year, when he is older, slower, and possible injuries could be more. WTF

Bisping’s head welled so big by beating Jason Day and MCcarthy, and Elvis Sinosec and Josh haynes, etc, etc
Just wait until he faces top fighters like Marquardt EVERY fight. They(the UFC) protected this guy so much, he is delusional and doesnt even know what a good fighter is.

by Crazy Canuck on Jun 4, 2009 10:16 AM EDT reply actions

Bisping should “count” his blessings that he didn’t get his wish and get a fight with Machida.

I think it takes more than just a great game plan to beat Machida…you need to have certain skills to pull off the game plan that’s needed to beat Machida and I’m not sure Page has what it takes. PAge is too flat footed and doesn’t move very well except his head. He’s got great boxing defence but Machida will punish him with kicks and I don’t see Page being able to close the distance on MAchida.

by Buster Bluth on Jun 4, 2009 10:17 AM EDT reply actions

I agree with this totally. Forest punished him with kicks and even Jardine was getting some good kicks in there. And for people to think Machida isn’t going to punish him with kicks.

I honestly think Rampage didn’t want to fight the guy. I think he wants someone else to try and beat him before his title shot.

by Atnip on Jun 4, 2009 10:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Back when NOBODY wanted to fight Machida, I think Bisping vs. Machida would have been a great match up! Right now, Bisping would have no shot in hell because Machida has found his stride….but back then, I actually think it would have been a close fight destined to go to a decision.

I am one of the biggest and longest tenured Machida fans on this site, and I am a big fan of Rampage n Shogun as well. I actually think that they have what it takes to actually test Machida, unlike that Fraud of a champion Rashad. Machida could have easily taken anyones title, but I am certain that Shogun or Rampage would have actually provided a test for Machida.

Sorry buster, I couldnt resist taking a shot at your boy! lol

Since the Tito fight, I have always found myself looking forward to watching Rashad fight. I recognize him as a very skilled and top fighter, but I honestly still cant stand his personality! I just cant take it!

THere is little doubt in my mind that Rampage will beat Rashad. Regardless of the outcome, It will be an amazing fight. tHing is, its very important for Rampage to beat shad so that we can see Rampage vs. the winner of Machida/Shogun. If Machida beats Shogun, it will be very important for Rampage to win, because if Shad wins, he wont get an immediate shot at a rematch against the DRagon. So Machida wont have a top fighter to face. THink about it:

-Forrest will be coming off 2 losses in a row (Rashad n Anderson)
-Wandy n Hendo arent fighting at LHW anymore.
-Banha isnt ready yet
-He recently destroyed thiago silva
-He will have already beaten Shogun
-If Jardine beats THiago, he will only be on a 1 fight winning streak, so he doesnt deserve a title shot.
-Vera is still fighting Cans

If Rashad beats Rampage, the next title defense for Machida would probably be Rich franklin, if he doesnt get thrashed by wandy like I think he will!

only other option in my mind would be Randy dropping down to 205, but he will at least need to boast a win over Nog (machida’s teamate) in order to justify an immediate title shot in the division.

Basiaclly what I am saying is that if Machida retains his title against Shogun, it makes it imperative that Rampage beats Rashad in order to continue to see Machida fighting the elite of the division!

by john on Jun 4, 2009 11:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Now that you put it that way john, it seems that if Page loses that no one save Machida would have a decent win streak going on. lol.

by Synyster on Jun 4, 2009 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions

Oh john…I love our little debates and this is one that we will be debating for months and months since the fight isn’t for quite some time. I loved the fraud of a champion comment…nice touch. Although Rashad didn’t get to defend his title…he did what Page couldn’t do…finish the true fraud of a champ Forrest. The humiliation from the loss sent him into a mental abyss where he almost threw his whole career out the window. I’d be like that too if I talked as much crap as Page did and then failed to back it up…hahaha…had to throw that out there.

I can see why some people don’t like Evans but I personally like anyone that can talk a moderate amount of crap and then back it up in the cage. I find Page amusing from time to time but his antics get tiring and he spews the same jokes over and over again. Page is a great fighter but he’s become too complacent as a boxer and hasn’t really refined his overall game in quite some time. If he wants even a remote chance at giving Machida a run for his money then he better learn how to move his legs and go back to his wrestling. The only way to neutralize Machida is if he is on his back. It’s hard to be elusive if you have no way to move your legs. Easier said than done though.

There is no doubt in my mind that Page/Shad will be a great fight and I don’t see Rashad losing this one. I think Rashad looked past Machida too much because of the hype from the potential Page title fight. Shad is going to make Page pay for that. I do wonder though if Machida wins and Shad wins…what will they do? I figure they’ll give Rashad another crack unless someone else steps up in the meantime…we have the rest of the year to find out.

I hope Shogun gives Machida all he can handle and I’d love to see Shogun and Page square off again. I really like Shogun a lot and I’d hate to see Shogun and Rashad go at it.

I think we can all agree that despite Page wasting his chance at a title shot cause he still has a bout of the crazies…we are in for some great fights at LHW this year and next.

by Buster Bluth on Jun 4, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

shogun is going to smoke both of these goofs so you won’t have to worry about which one will hold the title again, because the answer is neither! rampage doesn’t want to fight shogun either, he remembers that beatdown from 05

by brendan on Jun 4, 2009 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Buster: Battling with you is always great, but it doesnt happen often cause we agree on a lot of topics…thats why I am going to enjoy the evans/Rampage match up…Its a Super fight that can go either way so there is a lot of debating to be done.

Cheers!

by john on Jun 4, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

If Rashad was a fraud of a champion then this can’t be a superfight. Make up your mind, john!

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 4, 2009 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Completely agree with John’s assessment of the challengers in the LHT division. Except for Rampage at present, there are questions hanging over all of them. I will only add that if the past 18 months have proven anything, expect the unexpected. Meaning, the pecking order within the LHT division will not play out as most of us expect. I strongly believe Rampage passing on an immediate title shot was strictly a financial decision, albeit a risky decision if he ends up losing to Rashad.

by CL on Jun 4, 2009 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions

good post CL…the pecking order does change often and imo by the time we see Chida/Shogun and Chida/Page there will be a new pecking order for us to discuss

by McArthur on Jun 4, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Cl: I slso have a feeling that it was a financial decision on Rampage’s part to take the fight with Rashad. People say he was afraid of Machida, thats just STUPID!!! THere isnt a number #1 contender in mma that is afraid of the Champion. I think the beef between Page n Rashad is legit, but I dont think that was a factor either. Rampage is 1st and foremost motivated by money. spike tv was adamant about wanting Rampage on the show. Instead of fighting Machida as the challenger, Rampage will now Headline a ppv event against Rashad. when Page n Rashad fight, it will be the main event and make no mistake about it, RAMPAGE will be the favorite and the HEADLINER!!! which will earn Rampage more money, on top of the money he is getting from cosching on SPIKE. rAMPAGE hated COACHING ON Tuf THE 1ST TIME. I bet they had to pony up a lot of money to get him on as a coach.

In pro sports I often bash fighter for making it all about the money. Leaving there team that is willing to pay them 16 million to go to a worse team thats offering them 18 million. BUt mma fighters arent making that kind of money so I have no problem with them making decisions based on $$$. AS LONG AS i AM LEFT with good match ups. how can I really complain?>

by john on Jun 4, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

There also isn’t a number 1 contender that has ever turned down a fight with the champ…until now. If you aren’t in it to win it and go up against the best…then you aint a true fighter. It isn’t about money…you make more money being a champ than being a coach on a reality show in my opinion. If it really is about money then I question Rampage’s desire to fight best fighters out there or only the fighters that can make him the most money….priorities, priorities. Title opportunities only come about so often and I’m not sure why someone like Page would take a risky fight with Shad then try to be the first person to hand Machida a loss and get his precious belt back. I’m not saying he’s scared cause this isn’t a career where fear is an option but maybe he doubts he can beat Machida after what he saw at 98 and would like to see if someone else can do it for him.

I’m not complaining about having Shad and Page coaches on TUF or facing each other at the end and having Shogun/Machida face off but Page is a fool to give away this opportunity.

by Buster Bluth on Jun 4, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

We aren’t privy to Rampage’s financial situation nor should we be. I have to believe however he has an immediate need for cash, due to the legal issues of last summer. To whatever extent his decision was based on that need is pure speculation on my part. Time will tell if it was foolish for Rampage to pass up the title shot, and I can definitely see why you are critical of the decision.

by CL on Jun 4, 2009 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions

John, there isnt a number #1 contender in mma that is afraid of the Champion? Did you watch Leites/Silva?

Off-topic… anyone else think Cote would be a sweet first fight for Wanderlei at MW?

Okami will probaby beat Cote via gay-porn man-blanket and Wanderlei will hopefully KO Rich… then Cote’s chin absorbs Wanderlei bombs until he takes his first ever in-ring nap, setting up a big fight for Wand aganst a top-5 MW!

Also, I read a report out of the UK that says the winner of Bisping/Hendo is NOT guaranteed a title shot, and would probably need to win another big fight. I say the winner of Maia/Marquardt should get the next shot, and the winner of Bisping/Henderson should fight the winner of Cote/Okami to see who gets the shot after that.

by Jeremyjackson on Jun 4, 2009 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW,Cote vs Wands would be an awesome fight!
And the winner of Bisping/Henderson will probably fight the winner of Cote/Okami no doubts about it!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 4, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

JJ…..that sounds reasonable. I like Cote, and even though I’m not convinced he’s at the top of the food chain in the division, he’s an entertaining fighter that BRINGS it. Let’s find out where he’s at vs. a dangerous opponent. I’m OK with the scenarios you give for the next title shot in the MW division. My own issue right now is that I’m having a tough time being excited about any match-up for A Silva. The contender match-ups are more interesting to me, mainly because of the gap I believe that exists between A Silva and the rest of the division. I’d like to be proven wrong, as the division would be more interesting.

by McArthur on Jun 4, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

And the thing about it is Rampage is either a dumbass or a genious – ill take genious because hes gonna get all this money for TUF, the Rashad fight and as time passes he gets to see how different fighters fight fair out against MAchida and if there are any visible chinks in the Dragon’s armour. So PAge is getting to whoop Rashad, getting his big pay days, getting to see MAchida tested by Shogun and see how Machida deals with his style and then Rampage get a shot – hopefully when hes ready.

1 thing is definite – PAge aint scared of any1, why would he be – he fought Wandy twice even after getting demolished back when Wandy was like the most feared man in MMA and he went back for a third trip and ended up KO-ing the axe murderer (Rich Franklin should take a leaf out of PAge’s book here on not backin down from Anderson).

MAchida is a better fighter than Rampage and will probably beat him but Rampage has still got a good chance of beating him when he slaps Rashad’s ass!

WAR GOD’S STREET SOLDIER!!!! ya feel me!!!

yeah right, thats why rampage ducked machida when they offered him a title shot. lAME EXCUSE saying he wants to fight evans, a fighter, that beat bisping, crushed forrest, something rampage couldnt do, yet was destroyed by machida. I think rampage realizes he is way to one dimensional to fight machida, if evans couldnt touch him, and his hand speed and footwork is light years ahead , what is rampage going to do. Rampage has no kicking game, cant check kicks, and cant even finish MWs like hendo, or lindland, think bispinghas a big mouth, but once he beatsa hendo, and is crushed by anderson he willbe humbled. I dont see machida losing a fight or even a round in at least the next 2 yrs.

by KS on Jun 4, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

BS!!! Evreyone’s favorite fighters have “a mouth”. Rashad, Diaz, tito,bj, ken flo, and countless other fan favorites talk trash. Its because he is british that he gets no respect from my fellow American fans and It sucks to see.

Not only is he a great ammbassador, but he is a very skilled fighter thats only going to continue to improve. He gave EVERYONE’s new favorite fighter, Rashad all he could handle in a weight class Bisping had no business even being competitive in. I would actually have awarded that decision to Bisping because I dontr value takedowns if you do nothing with them and your opponent stands right back up.

No doubt in my mind that Bisping will outpoint Hendo to a decision win. No one talks about his size at middleweight. Bisping is freaking HUge for the division, yet very fast. Mix that in with his footwork and crisp improving striking, and he has a very bright future in the middleweight division. Training with a guy like Rampage is going to do wonders for his under rated wrestling. I dont know where people get the idea that he lacks power and cant finish fights. He probably finished 70% of his opponents. not to mention the fact that he has a great chin.

It really bothers me that he doesnt get the respect that he deserves. when he beats Henderson, THAT BETTER CHANGE!!!!

John i got you this from Mayhem post…

I don’t know if its the Summer time heat starting to creep in,but I have noticed that the low rung of celebrities, myself included are getting fired up.I’m writing this as a guide and also a reminder that there is no reason to get fired up at what the throngs of anonymus bashers, average pencil pushers, and desk chair-cage fighters have to say.

You chose to be in a life of limelight. This doesn’t mean that you can’t soak up the affection that you will undoubtedly recieve, but you also must deal with the inevitable critisicm that you will have to endure in order to maintain your public figure. If you lose your temper with these people, you will just drive yourself bananas. If you get drunk and write an angry open letter, that includes some of your sexual exploits, you will definitely have to apologize to your mother the next day, as well as any girl you happen to be dating.

The simple FRAT-less answer is,if you don’t want to be critiqued by every fanboy on the internet, feel free to stand BEHIND the camera, and behind only. Working on my TV show I’ve met countless people that work happily behind the camera and make a tremendous amount of money. You don’t know who they are,and can’t talk shit about them, but they still reap the benefits of whatever they happen to be filming.

Mayhem

P.S.

Sorry I kicked Jacare in the head illegally and “ruined a great event” it really was unintentional.

For the fans: I told Jacare’ at the stare down “Not this time, man, not this time.” signaling I was ready for battle. He retorted with “I’m gonna break you.” which made me laugh.not only because of the obvious Rocky reference, but also because it wasn’t gonna happen,so I said “We’ll see!”

Later in the fight,he took me down,I got right back up to my feet in 3 seconds and as they were checking his cut again,I said “What are you gonna break, motherfucker?!” then walked away mumbling “can’t even keep me on the ground..” Turned around and he was coming at me,then my corner got hot, his corner got hot,and I realized they were about to stop the fight on the cut,and I started to get all emotional, because I worked too hard to not get the belt.

Ah well, can’t wait to get it going again.

Rampage wont even fight Lyoto let alone beat him. Even if Page eventually gets in there with him it will be less of a fight than the Rashad effort. Like I said before, its going to take a guy with tons of skill, Rampage is just a big strong guy that can take a punch, Lyoto will beat Page easily. I would like to see Maia get in there with Lyoto…..someone that can get a hold of him and take him down. Page is just a goon, he doesnt have enough skill to beat Lyoto!!!!!

Rampage was the worst coach on that show ever- even worse than Serra. Atleast Serra told his fighters to breath. And how is Rampage “God’s Solider”? Last time I read the bible I didn’t see were God told one of his soliders to go on a speed chase while being chased by cops and smashing into other cars and causing a miscarriage. “Pee Drinker” will destroy “baby killer”.

first of all we dont really know why rampage chose to coach on TUF and not take the title shot. m guess is that he is doing what dana wnats and dana is paying him a $h!t ton of moneny to do it.

as for if he could definitely beat machida, im not sure. he is one of my favorite fighters but stylistically it seems like a bad matchup. he has trouble with leg kicks; forrest, jardine, and even wandy was tagging him until the flurry. in the jardine fight he showed signs of improving and even threw a leg kick himself, but he looked really uncomfortable doing it. he can always land that big punch but he needs to figure out a way to close the distance to do it.

back when machida was going the distance with guys like sam hoger and david heath bisping would have smashed him..end of story

And unicorns and leprechauns would have cornered Bisping for the fight.

doesnt matter if he was only winning decisions back then, he was still as elusive as ever, and no fighter has ever come close to winning a single round against machida. If that doesnt prove he is on a much higher level, then you are clueless. Yhe scary thing is thAT HE IS GETTING BETTER, and is getting comfortable in the ring, and icorpirating much more agressive karate to finish fights, meanwhile his opponents are clueless how to fight him. It seems boxing, and muasy thai are useless against his karate, combine that with his wrerstling, great BJJ, his sumo background, and the fact no one can come close enought to touch him, while he picks you apart, or counters when you come forward. I REALLY DONT SEE ANYONE BEATING MACHIDA THE NEXT 5 YRS OR EVEN WINNING A SINGLE ROUND. iTS FASCINATING TO NOTE,THAT EVEN ANDERSON SILVA SAYS MACHIDA SCHOOLS HIM, AND EVEN HE GET S FRUSTATED SPARRING AGAINST HIM
