Rickson in da house! Diego Sanchez headlines TUF 9 finale as a BJJ brown belt

Yesterday, I became an official Saulo Ribeiro Brown Belt. I am honored to finally be a part of REAL Gracie BJJ after Royler Gracie tied my brown belt after Saulo promoted me. The icing on the cake was that my hero Rickson Gracie was there watching me and congratulated me!!!

Newly-minted Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt Diego Sanchez shares his grappling pursuits via his official MySpace page. Will "Nightmare" be putting his jits to use against the onslaught of Clay Guida at The Ultimate Fighter 9 finale on June 20? Or will "The Carpenter's" offense be too suffocating like it was against Nate Diaz earlier this year? This one is going to be fireworks...

Good for Diego, I think he and BJ (two of my Favs) will be fight of the year!

by kevin on Jun 3, 2009 10:43 AM EDT reply actions

Same! I hope he finishes Guida off and then has a war w/ BJ! I’m not sure who to pick in that fight.

by LJ on Jun 3, 2009 11:14 AM EDT up reply actions

all i know is that if Diego is JUST now getting his brown belt, then Saulo Ribeiro is one tough teacher cause Diego’s jits was always top shelf IMO. His Jits 2 years ago is better then half the guys who got their black belts in the past year. I mean seriously, do you really think Phillipe Nover will out jits Diego? NOT A FOCKING chance!

Its gotta be meaningful to have Royce wrap that belt around your waste while Rickson is standing their clapping in the front row!

it was royler dude

by ruanfiy on Jun 3, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

who cares, it’d be awesome if it was any Gracie.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 3, 2009 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Rickson is the man…hands down. Any Gracie will say the same thing…

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Getting a brown belt from Saulo Ribiero is about as legit as it gets. Saulo’s book ‘Jiu Jitsu University’ is one of the best traditional BJJ books out there.

An FYI for Washington State BJJ artists:
June 27th Royler Gracie Seminar in Fife.

by TabascoSAUCE on Jun 3, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Tabasco is right about saulo- one of the greatest ever. Man, i am too cheap to buy the book but it’s a must from just browsing through it. I really want to get it coz my bad white belt habits are off the chart, gotta correct them now before it’s too late.

by NameNotRequired on Jun 3, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

I am sure that it is very tough to get a brown belt from Saulo. My instructor was a student of Carlson Gracie, and later one of his students, Carlos Henrique. It usually takes over a year just to get your blue belt where I go. Some places hand belts out like they came from a Cracker Jack box.

just to let you guys know, Dana isn’t dumb, He’ll get ratings at the same price as all TUF guys cost, but if Kimbo wins he gets a better contract! Dana knows full well that Kimbo can’t win!
.

“[Kimbo Slice has] a contract if he wins the show. He’s got a contract to fight in the UFC, and it’s a good one. So, that’s his carrot. […] He has the same TUF deal. If he makes it into the UFC his contract is different, a lot [expletive] different.”

LOL!You just can’t let it go,huh

let it go?? thats big news!
if I were on the show, once I beat him, I’d want that contract, who knows, maybe Dana will pay (a bounty) to guy who beats him!

by kevin on Jun 3, 2009 11:17 AM EDT up reply actions

If,they really want him to lose they’ll put him, against a decent striker with a good ground game!Since it supposedly be the coach who choose the match up…They know that he’s got no ground defence. So i can’t wait to see, against who he’s gonna be match up if it’s the opposing team who’s get the pick!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 3, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions

well if he wins and gets a contract he will bring more viewers than any constant thats on there, how many guys win that show and are a big draw right off the bat? he gets more because he will bring in more just like when brock got a huge contract even though he only had 1 fight.

by roy on Jun 3, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions

great points roy…you’re coming around, jk

by kevin on Jun 3, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions

not that i agree with it, but it is what it is.

where do you guys think he will be picked at?
will he be someones first pick? or last?

i will go with 2nd pick

by roy on Jun 3, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think the fighter who wins the show or beats Kimbo needs to worry about getting Kimbo’s contract… they are going to become household names immediately and as long as they fight hard they will be making higher figures quickly. I think that Rampage will pick Kimbo as his first pick as a joke but I think he’ll be a good coach for Kimbo. I’m thinking Kimbo wins his first fight and then is submitted in the second fight.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 3, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

And what if Kimbo puts on even a slightly respectable performance… Dana may decide to sign him to a small deal and go after Seth to promote a rematch under the UFC banner. Huge payday for the UFC with little investment.

by DJ on Jun 3, 2009 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh yeah…. go Diego!

by DJ on Jun 3, 2009 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions

your right dj, dana will get every penny out of this he can.

by roy on Jun 3, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

U guys are all FOOLING yourselves if you think that after the show Kimbo isnt going to be making Good money in the UFC!!! I know he wont win the show but that wont matter the least bit. I have NO DOUBTS that he will still be fighting on the Main card of the Finale like Junie Browning did…He will be making more then the standard TUF losers that make it to the UFC contract of $8k to show and $8k to win…not to mention the boatloads of money he will make in sponsorship money as a UFC fighter. Kimbo will be making more sponsorship money than some UFc champions.

He isnt stupid, and Dana isnt either. Get used to it…Kimbo is a UFC FIGHTER, and a well paid one at that!!!!!

by john on Jun 3, 2009 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions

Is there anyone on this site thats actually a fan of Guida???

by kevin on Jun 3, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions

i still like him i mean 1 fight ‘hugging’ nick diaz and he gets all this abuse when before that he was known as 1 of the most energetic fighters in the UFC who always brings the fight! He needed the win and got it – most people would do the same!

by Randy for Couture on Jun 3, 2009 11:02 AM EDT up reply actions

A lot of people used to be fans of the pace he set until they realized he was just a fast dry-humper. Not me though. I’ve been an anti-nut-hugger of Guida from the beginning. You may all climb aboard my anti-Huggie Bear bandwagon.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m not a huge fan, but you gotta give him credit he comes in great shape. Needs to cu his hair though………

by Dragon on Jun 3, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions

1 fight?? just because he pushes the pace doesn’t mean he doesn’t hug!

by kevin on Jun 3, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought MacDanzig was robbed against him. I was seriously shocked when that decision was said. And the Diaz robbery.

I remember someone saying that Guida isn’t an exciting fighter, he fights other people who make it exciting. Tyson and Huerta were his best fights, and those guys have a knack for being in good fights. Although for Tyson, not recently.

by Synyster on Jun 3, 2009 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions

I gotta say I am still a fan of the Clay. I have liked the guy since his strikeforce days. Everyone may bash him but he does what he feels he needs to do to win.

Look at it from this perspective. Take Sherk. For a long time Sherk would use the same strategy. Take down, pepper, lay, get stood-up, repeat, and he was extremely successful. Then fans started saying he was boring and needed to change. Enter the new “I think I can box” Sherk, and look what happens. He starts losing. Now everyone is screaming for Sherk to go back to his wrestling.

Like him or not, you have to respect Clay for sticking with what works for him. No matter what, a W is a W, and in the end, thats what it is all about.

by Cole on Jun 3, 2009 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think that Guida’s style is going to be able to get him to the higher level of LWs that he’d want to be at but I like the guy. He trains down in Chicago and is a generally down to earth guy. Just needs to expand his arsenal a bit more and learn to be a little lighter on the feet when trading punches.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on Jun 3, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Clay Guida is a gate keeper at best, and a boring one at that! All his intensity, energy, and his “Fast pace” just equal a ton groping, hugging and just a gross display of MAN LOVE!!!!!

YOu want to see Clay Guida fight? Put on gay Porn of a guy with long hair and watch it in fast forward….THats a clay Guida fight to the T!!!!!!

by john on Jun 3, 2009 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Priceless

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 3, 2009 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m sorry I know I may get a lot of crap for this but how can people get on Clay’s case for laying and praying. Just because he did it for one fight does not mean that is all he does. He brings the fight to people. I agree with what Cole said, Sherk is the biggest lay and prayer here. It got him a tainted Belt in the UFC NO doubt he was roiding when he beat Kenny. He was as borign as they come. Clay will beat Diego because he will bring the fight to Sanchez. Then it will be Clay vs. Kenny for the belt which will be a great fight. Not sure who to pull for in that one.

by Ralphie on Jun 3, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Trust me, there are some Guida fans still around. After the Diaz fight when I coined the nickname “Huggie Bear” I was getting some serious hate from some people for dissing him and his “relentless” style.

The funny thing is that I’ve heard people tell me that they have seen Guida referred to as Huggie Bear on other sites as well.

Huggie Bear and Tupperware are probably my two nicknames that stuck the best. Too bad Tupperware was thrown in the recycling bin a few years ago…

by ViolentMike on Jun 3, 2009 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Hichson is the man and is beyond legendary in Brazil probably more so than any other Brazilian fighter including Royce…Anybody see the show “fight Quest” went they went to train with Rickson’s black belts??? Good show…

I really hope Diego taps huggie out

by sac165 on Jun 3, 2009 10:52 AM EDT reply actions

Me too. Sanchez is a f*cking weirdo. Doubt he losses to clay but bj/kenflo will murder him.

by Dragon on Jun 3, 2009 11:19 AM EDT up reply actions

he already murdered kenflo, remember? i think kenflo was actually crying at the end of that fight

by Mascarita on Jun 3, 2009 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions

There’s no way Guida wins this. Diego has better standup, ground, and can keep up with Guida’s pace. Diego via Decision.

by Stryker on Jun 3, 2009 10:53 AM EDT reply actions

I am interested to hear everyone’s opinion on this. Do you think Diego will get (or deserves) the next title shot in the event he finishes Guida? Or simply beats him for that matter?

IMO he wont finish Guida, Guida is boring yes but he is tough – only been finished once in the UFC. His competition hasnt been outstanding, but still.

by WB on Jun 3, 2009 10:57 AM EDT reply actions

Title shot — yes, Diego should get the winner of BJ-KillFlo. He has an outstanding record, and there is no need to rehash his two losses.

And yes he finishes Huggie Bear. There is nothing that Huggie brings that is even close to what Diego brings. Huggie can’t outwrestle Diego and hump him for the win, and he can’t outstrike Diego. Diego is going to put Huggie on his back and beat him down.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions

IMO, Diego would still need one more quality win to be considered for a title shot. His wins in the LW division would be vs. Stephenson and Guida, assuming he beats Guida. Both good wins but not guys I consider top 5 type talent in the division.

by CL on Jun 3, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions

I definitely agree with you CL but then there is the question of who deserves the next shot?

With Edgar beating Sherk the only person I see in contention with Diego is Maynard, but he also could use a step up in his competition. I would LOVE to see Maynard and Griffin fight but they said no unless it was for a title since they are training partners so I am very interested to see what the UFC plans on doing.

by WB on Jun 3, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Diego just destroyed Joe Daddy, who was the No. 1 contender not too long ago. And that was in his first fight after a major weight cut.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Beneath Penn and Florian, the picture is muddy. Diego may have the most upside. Assuming he beats Guida, maybe a fight vs either Edgar or Maynard for #1 contender status?

by CL on Jun 3, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I am a huge fan of Guida. The guy has put on some of the best slugfests in MMA history. The fights with Roger Huerta and Tyson Griffin are legendary. I can’t understand why you people don’t like this guy? He’s a genuinely nice guy and always brings it. He doesn’t get involved in all the politics and head games. He’s just there to fight. He’s arguable the most exciting fighter to watch in the UFC. Give him a break.

by RU486 on Jun 3, 2009 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

Are you serious? One of the most exciting fighters? The only fights of his that are exciting have more to do with his opponent doing something. Huggie has great cardio, but all that means is he dry-humps faster than other dry-humpers. That does not make him more exciting.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

LMAO!awesome PW!

by Alpha Male 360 on Jun 3, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions

Guida USED to be an exciting fighter. I think he got tired of losing and has adopted a conservative approach. His conservative approach has turned into BORING.

by YouveGotGold on Jun 3, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

I hope this fight is all ground so we can see two monkeys with great cardio roll around for 3 rounds.

Realistically, Diego will probably stuff anything Guida has and keep it on the ground to prove a point that his stand up is improving.

by DubNub on Jun 3, 2009 11:18 AM EDT reply actions

I predict this fight will start standing, but by the end of the first round, Huggy will realize that standing with Diego is a losing proposition. In the 2nd round, Huggy will take it to the ground, and by the end of the 2nd round, Huggy will realize that going to the ground with Diego is a losing proposition. In the 3rd round, Guida will get desperate, make a mistake, and Diego will make him pay dearly. Diego wins in the 3rd via KO or submission.

by kg on Jun 3, 2009 11:49 AM EDT reply actions

Diego has got to be the favorite in this one. If he wins he will get a title shot he was a win away from a shot at GSP. What about Spencer Fisher vs the loser of this one? Diego vs Penn would be great. Diego vs Florian…I guess.

by hatteras on Jun 3, 2009 12:00 PM EDT reply actions

who is going to win Huggie Bear or the wierdo tool camera hog. Come on TOOL and kill Huggie please! KenFlo And BJ will murder both of these guys but 155 needs a new gatekeeper since Joe Daddy has been roughed up lately!

by jamie on Jun 3, 2009 1:37 PM EDT reply actions

I could rip on you all day for that piece of idiocy you just posted, but instead I’ll just ask this: What exactly does Guida do better than Diego that will allow him to win this fight?

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

I say Diego wins!

by jamie on Jun 3, 2009 3:09 PM EDT reply actions

I think it is awesome people still give love to Rickson, he is won of my all time favorites as well. Rickson is a beast. Were you ragging on me PW?

by jamie on Jun 3, 2009 3:12 PM EDT reply actions

No, that was meant for Ralphie’s post above, saying he thought Huggie was somehow going to win. My response posted at the bottom instead under the intended comment.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

There is such disparity (sp) w/ schools and belts. The Gracie’s don’t give away their belts. I train VERY casual in St. Louis. Rodrigo Vahgi has his school’s here. He’s a 4th degree Black B under Rickson. In like 12 years here he’s given out ONE Black B. I really don’t like Sanchez and I do kind of like Guida..but congrats to Sanchez on his belt. I’m sure it was tough to obtain.
