Killer Instinct: An MMAmania.com UFC 99 interview exclusive with Ben Saunders

Ben Saunders is known for two things so far in his young MMA career.

One is being a cast member under Coach Matt Serra during The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) Season 6.

The other is the dominating performance he put on against Brandon Wolff at UFC Fight Night 16: "Fight for the Troops," where he brutalized the Hawaiian with an onslaught of devastating knees in the clinch that led to a gruesome first round knockout victory.

Needless to say, the 7-0-2 American Top Team product would like to make it a hat trick at this juncture in his career and create another lasting memory inside the cage while continuing to work his way up the UFC welterweight ladder.

On the immediate horizon for "Killa B" is a UFC 99 match up with a very dangerous 170-pound contender in Mike Swick, set to take place in Cologne, Germany on June 13.

A win over "Quick" would likely expedite his hopes of one day becoming a champion and put him right into the mix with the other top contenders.

On the other hand, a disappointing loss would send him back into the middle of the welterweight heap.

Something has to give.

Saunders graciously took time out of his busy training schedule to discuss his the chances of the Orlando Magic (his favorite team), fighting overseas, his teammate Thiago Alves and of course, the aforementioned Mike Swick.

Have a look:

Star-divide

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I understand you consider yourself an Orlando Magic fan being that you were born and raised in Florida and also train in Pembroke Pines at American Top Team. What is your prediction for the NBA finals?

Ben Saunders: I hope they destroy L.A. (laughs).

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): What's going to be the difference in the series? Break it down for me.

Ben Saunders: Honestly I know L.A. is going to put up a fight. I'm hoping it doesn't go to game seven. Hopefully we can get them before that. I'm thinking four games to two.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Your upcoming fight against Mike Swick at UFC 99 will take place in Germany. This is your first professional fight overseas. Are you okay with all the travel and being able to adjust to the time zone and everything that comes with it?

Ben Saunders: I guess we'll find out. I've never fought international. I've never even traveled international. I just got my passport. I'm looking forward to it. A lot of people talk about the time zone difference and everything but I don't work a regular nine to five so I'm not used to being on a strict schedule at all times.

I don't think it will really affect me too much. I'm pretty sure I arrive at like 7:30 in the morning. I'm just supposed to be drinking lots of water, walking around in the sun, and getting my body adjusted. Hopefully it does its job.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Swick is a bit of a jump in competition for you. Are you ready to take your career to the next level?

Ben Saunders: (Laughs) It's about time! Damn!

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Swick has fought 10 times in the UFC so you have a wealth of tape on his fights to try and figure him out. What have you learned about him in your preparations?

Ben Saunders: I know he's quick but once again this is welterweight. I don't think he's going to be as quick as he was against the middleweights at welterweight. I think it kind of showed in his past couple of fights in the sense of Josh Burkman and Marcus Davis. The hand speed really didn't come too much into play there.

Granted, he did end up getting Jonathan Goulet, but I'm not Jonathan Goulet. I think I'll be the bigger, stronger, more powerful guy that night. He isn't going to have the reach advantage. As far as strong points, his strong point is my strong point and that's striking so we're going to go to war.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): On the other side of the coin you have fought just four times in the UFC. Do you think that could play into your favor a little bit since he can only familiarize himself with you to a certain degree and there is still a bit of a mystery there?

Ben Saunders: Definitely man. By no means do I believe I have shown anything of what I know I'm capable of in any of my fights. Look at my last fight. I injured my opponent within the first twenty to thirty seconds and then it was just more of a killer instinct. I jumped on him and didn't let go.

I don't really think he has too much tape he can really look at to prepare for someone like me. I think I have a very unorthodox style. I believe I'm tough competition for anyone.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Would you like to make an official prediction on the fight?

Ben Saunders: Someone is going to get knocked out. I'll predict that it's going to be Mike Swick. As for how, when, or what point in time I can't tell you. I just kind of go with the flow. Wherever the fight goes I feel comfortable and confident to win by any means.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): If you are lucky to come away with a victory over Swick where does that put you in reference to the other welterweight contenders?

Ben Saunders: I don't know. If I beat Swick impressively I'll be begging Dana White and Joe Silva to try my luck at a top ten welterweight.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I think you actually have to beg to them on the actual telecast after your fight. That seems to work out pretty well for a lot of guys, right?

Ben Saunders: That's the plan.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): I think I might already know the answer to this but who do you like to come out on top at UFC 100 between Georges St. Pierre and your teammate Thiago Alves?

Ben Saunders: Thiago is going to knock him out.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Are you okay with fighting your teammate Thiago Alves if that happened to fall into place for both of you?

Ben Saunders: Man, if it ever came to that where I become the #1 contender and Thiago has the belt. I mean, that's probably the best fight in American Top Team history. And if anything, UFC history.

I think it would be a very exciting fight. We're both in it to test ourselves against the best in the world. It would be nothing personal. At the same time I don't even want to think about that until it actually happens.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): That's all I had for you Ben. Is there anything you would like to pass along to your fans out there or any sponsors you would like to thank?

Ben Saunders: Thank you for all the support. I keep looking to go in there and do what I do best, which is fight my ass off and put on a show. Come June 13 you're going to see a show.

Derek Bolender (MMAmania.com): Alright, thanks again Ben. Best of luck in a couple weeks. I look forward to speaking with you again in the future.

Ben Saunders: Thank you very much.

Man, if it ever came to that where I become the #1 contender and Thiago has the belt. I mean, that’s probably the best fight in American Top Team history. And if anything, UFC history. Really? history? I liked him up until that part.

I predict Swick by swicking out in the 3rd over Ross Gellar.

by Buster Bluth on Jun 3, 2009 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions

lol @ Ross Gellar…

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

lol – Greatest fight in history… For UFC99 I think we’ll see a jabbing war for 2 rounds and maybe a flash KO. I don’t know who I’d rather see lose more??? I don’t like Swick because he’s ruined AKA dropping to a WW and I don’t like anyone at ATT because they think their fight will be the best fight in the history of fights…

I’d say swick will underperform his way to a decision W.

Yea ok buddy, Ben Saunders vs Thiago Silva, “best fight in ATT history and if anything UFC history”.. Getting a bit ahead of yourself there. I’m rooting for Swick to wipe that stupid smile off Saunders face.

WAR SWICK

Swick will be too much for Saunders, but it should be a very entertaining fight. This card is stacked with stand-up wars.

I’m gonna get super-duper hammered and start screaming “WAR Wanderlei” out my window until the neighbors call the cops. Again.

Im swicking out man!

IMO Swick is a top ten WW in the UFC

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

Here is how I would rank the UFC WW

GSP
Fitch
Alves
Kampman
Condit
KOS
Swick
Hughes
Johnson
Kim

theres also Hardy, Hazelett, Karo, Serra, Thiago who could be close to the 10 spot as well

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll put my money on Swick over Condit or Kampman. Swick is top five in my book and moving up. Give him a little time. The guy was a round away from a title shot at Middleweight if I remember correctly.

by Adam T. on Jun 3, 2009 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions

decent idea…I’ll probably agree a bit more if he can dismantle an overrated Saunders

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope Saunders whoops Swick and busts up that Swick-Fitch-Kos AKA logjam/lovefest at the top of the division, but Saunders really said some ignorant crap in this interview.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 4:36 PM EDT up reply actions

haha logjam lovefest.. you guys should be fucking comedians

by sp00ner1234 on Jun 3, 2009 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions

I like that list Mac, but I still put Condit over Kampman, I think he’d win in a rematch; Kamp is a great fighter, like seeing him fight; but he had to do some lay n prey to pull that W off. I really don’t have Hughes as top 10 in the current WW division. The guy has his place in history, his time is done; the only way Hughes wins anymore is by lay n prey; can’t even work the GnP like he used to. He’s right handed so the second he steps into the ring and leads with his right leg you know he’s going to shoot for the TD. So predictable, so 1 dimensional. I’d bet on Rumble, Swick, Kos, Hazelette, Matt Brown, Frank Trigg and even Hardy or Marcus Davis to beat him now a days.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 3, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions

And I’d bet on Serra in a rematch, not that thats ever going to happen, but Hughes did absolutley nothing threatening in that fight; he was at no time anywhere close to finishing Matt Serra or inflicting any serious damage on him. I think Serra wins that fight at least 50-60% of the time.

by O damn he got caught on Jun 3, 2009 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Couldn’t agree more about Condit…I thought he had won the 1st 2 rnds against Kamp but he didn’t get the nod…its too bad really but I ranked him lower cause the dudes only 23 or 24…he’ll be back…lets start the Carlos Condit (The NEW CC)wagon OD

by McArthur on Jun 3, 2009 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

that was one of my favorite fights of the year, condit is the man, i love this kids style, kampman is better than than i thought as well.

by Blazy J on Jun 3, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

the thing i love about condit is hes really just a kid, like Mc said hes only 23 or 24 and already a really dangerous guy. Gonna be scary when hes 30

by medecine balls on Jun 3, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Johnson and Kim at 9 and 10?? What has AJ done to get that high? He’s beaten no one. Stun Gun too. Both guys have fought cans and thats it. Hazelett should be ranked over both, as should Davis.

by Synyster on Jun 3, 2009 8:19 PM EDT up reply actions

No mention of Marcus PW? That list (at least the honorable mention part) will need some serious re-adjusting after Davis dismantles Hardy at 99.

by WB on Jun 4, 2009 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed with Swick a top ten, and with some other rankings there, but I meant agreed with the first comment.

by Amos on Jun 3, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions

I really want to see Saunders pull this off. I don’t see Swick ever making it into the Top 3 of the WW division. However, Saunders does have the physical attributes to make him a Top 3 WW one day.

Swick has really been snoozing me since he fougth Okami and then all his WW fights thus far (Goulet was a gimme).

I predict Saunders by SUB or Swick by decision, but I’ll be rooting for Saunders by KO.

by ViolentMike on Jun 3, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Saunders is going to get a rude awakening. It seems like a lot of people underestimate Mike Swick. Not me. He is one of my favorite fighters. WTF is Saunders talking about when he says that Dana and Joe will throw a top ten welterweight at him if he wins? WTF do you think Swick is? Swick is going to beat his *ss.

by Adam T. on Jun 3, 2009 3:39 PM EDT reply actions

Saunders said “It is about damn time” when questioned about the step up in competition. What has he done to deserve a fight with Mike Swick? He beat a couple of guys that didn’t really have any business in the UFC and he thinks it’s about damn time. He’s going to get overwhelmed by Swick. Saunders is one disrespectful little b*tch. I can’t wait to see Swick pound him out and send him back to American Top Team to start over again. F*ck him.

by Adam T. on Jun 3, 2009 3:45 PM EDT reply actions

Wow; I agree with everything in this post.

Chuck Norris won a pissing contest against a Russian race horse.

by PW on Jun 3, 2009 10:15 PM EDT up reply actions

whats crazy is if you play the career mode as a welterweight on ufc undisputed ben saunders is always the welterweight champ, or one of the top contenders challenging you for the belt if you happen to own it.

by snicket916 on Jun 3, 2009 6:22 PM EDT reply actions

Why do other welter weights always think so little of gsp? What does he have to do to impress them? ko anderson silva with one hand behind there back. I’ve noticed this for a long time now, very few fighters other than those in jacksons camp seem to think much of him, almost no 155 lbs thought he’d win against gsp and everyone else thought it was a toss up. I hope gsp beats the living shit out of alves and KO’s him, a beautiful head kick would be perfect but a W would make be happy.

by nathan on Jun 3, 2009 10:00 PM EDT reply actions

I see absolutely no place in that fight that Alves can take it to have the advantage. I see it similar to the Fitch fight. I one sided beat down, but I see GSP ending it late with a submission – lets say RNC round 4?

GSP wins, and is never in danger – bottom line.
