UFC Quick Quote: Ben Saunders ready to 'whoop' Mike Swicks ass with his 'blades' on June 13

"I don't believe his hand speed will be that big of a difference, especially with the lack of a reach advantage, which he has had in almost all his other fights. It means I can hit him without getting hit and close the distance easier than him. He needs to be worried about my blades. The clinch is only one aspect and not something I feel I have to get. People seem to think that because I used it so well in my last fight, that it's my bread and butter. I love the clinch and feel very confident there, but it is by no means my best and only form of attack. I am a striker at heart and believe I can stand and bang with the best of them. That's why I fight for the UFC to test myself and see where I am and where I am going. But I am evolving as a mixed martial artist, adding submissions, takedowns, ground and pound and additional striking to my game. I just keep getting better.... I need to go out there and do what I do best; go out there and whoop that ass. I love what I do and it gets me hyped up just thinking about it. I don't have to be there, I want to be there. If he beats me, he beats me. There is nothing I can do or say to change that, but I'll be damned if I beat myself by doubting my skills in any way. I'm confident and come June 13th, I'll be well-prepared to take that stiff test and hopefully prove to myself and the world that I truly do belong in the UFC."
-- Ben Saunders talks to FightHype.com about his looming showdown with Mike Swick at UFC 99: "The Comeback" -- another exciting welterweight fight on tap at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13. "Berserk" feels that with a win over Swick, which would be his fourth inside the Octagon, that he'd deserve to take on the top players in the division moving forward. Does Saunders have the talent and ability to challenge the best at 170 pounds or will he remain on the outside looking in? We'll find out soon enough ...

Ive been a fan of saunders for a long time Ive been a fan of his since I first saw him fight and was really stocked when he put that performance against Wolff, I think This will be a good step up in competiton and show us where he really in at in the division!!

I must say, I was never a big fan of Ben. I was super impressed with his 2 UFC finishes, but I really became a fan after I met him at UFN 18 in Tampa. I practically watched the weigh ins with him, and was asking him about what he thought of fighting the other welterweights on the card. When I asked him about fighting Anthony Johnson, he said that they were going to put it together, but AJ DECLINED the fight. Wouldnt say why, but Ben wants to beat him up. lol. Dude is cool as hell too. F_cking tall too. I’m a short dude to begin with but my head was below his armpit. lol.
All that being said, I’m DEFINITELY rooting for Ben, but I think Swick is more battle tested, and has faced more adversity in the Octagon, which will prove to be the difference. Swick I think takes a very exciting Unanimous Decision. But I will be pulling for Ben!!

Im going with Ben Saunders, just going to be too vicious for Swick, unless Swick does nothing but stick n’ move.

Ben brings up an amazing point about this being the 1st time Swick wont enjoy a reach advantage. Interesting to see how Swick deals wit that!
This is pretty simple. in 2 Years Ben Saunders is going to be 2 times the fighter Swick ever was on his best day! He will surpass Swick in skill, the only question is if he is ready to surpass him now, or if he needs some more time….my guess is Swick is going to get his forehead tattooed with Saunders Knees!
Im betting some money on Saunders,Hardy, and Caul Ono. At least 2 of those 3 underdogs will win!

Alpha. Keep ducking me. I understand. Take as much time as you need. We’ll do a best of 5, one fight per weight class. How bout that?

This is tough match up to pick. I actually like both of these guys and am kinda torn but I think Swick is a bit more well rounded. Going with Swick TKO in the 2nd.

I’ve had about enough of that Swick-Kos-Fitch AKA love triangle holding up the WW division. I hope Saunders wrecks him so bad that it hurts Kos and Fitch too.
by PW on May 31, 2009 10:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because they wont fight eachother? Seriously how has the affected the WW division? Fitch is considered by alot of polls as the #2 WW in the world, so why would he need to fight Swick or Kos? Kos just lost and needs to start climbing the ladder again, so I ask again why does it matter Kos doesnt want to fight his teamates? Secondly Fitch and Swick have fights coming up. So tell me how exactly there holding up the WW division. IM not attacking you, but I cant see the reason behind your logic

Fitch and Kos are easily top 5 WWs and Swick is arguably a top 5 as well. If they won’t fight each other for the right to challenge GSP/Alves then we either get repeat fights or guys getting title shots who are ranked in the 5-10 range, and that shouldn’t be.

I’ve liked Saunders ever since he came off the ultimate fighter. I really hope he wins, but Swick might pull it off.

I effing hate Mike Swick.
I really hope Saunders does a repeat of what he did to Wolf.

Im looking forward to this one, going for Saunders over Swick and the winner should face AJ or Matt Brown, all these guys have exciting styles and are looking to break out of the middle tier of the WW division, its looking so stacked.

Great match up here, this will really see where Saunders belongs amongst the WW division. I don’t see this one going the distance, and this is one of those someone is def gonna get knocked out, I enjoy both of these fighters but imma say Swick will KO Saunders in this one

Guys, get with the program. Saunders is an untested novice compared to Swick. On experience alone, Swick will beat him in the first round. Anybody that thinks Saunders has a chance is just a nuthugger…. and I don’t even like Swick.
by Nepal on May 31, 2009 10:17 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Saunders is a huge WW and looked deadly in his last 2 fights, Swick may have experience on his side but this is only his 4th fight at WW and in the past he has struggled with the cut and hasn’t looked the same Quick Swick. Experience is important but it doesn’t win fights alone, look at Jones-Bonnar. Whilst Swick maybe too big a test for Ben at this point, he is a very dangerous opponent and I wouldn’t be suprised if Saunders wins.

I’m really surprised by the love Saunders is getting. yeah, he looked good but who did he fight??? Nobodies. Anybody can look good when they’re fighting a lower level of competition. Swick was back to his “quick swick” ways in his last fight although it was only against Jonathon Goulet. However I’d take Goulet over anybody that Saunders has beaten. Swick has beaten some solid fighters at both MW and WW. Swick is a big WW too so size shouldn’t be an issue. Swick wins round 1 but whatever he wants to win by. BTW, I don’t mean to disparage Saunders, he’s looking pretty good but just not near the Swick level.

Saunders looked totally amateurish on TUF but I will say he’s improved vastly since then. With that being said, let’s not annoint him as the next big thing in the WW division. Swick will be a good test as the other 2 guys were virtual unknowns. This fight should tell us alot.
