Tim Sylvia vs. Paul Buentello fight confirmed for Affliction 3 on Aug. 1

Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim Sylvia (24-5) is indeed booked to return to action against Paul Buentello (27-10) at Affliction 3: "Trilogy" at the Honda Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009.
The long-rumored bout was recently confirmed by MMAFanhouse.com with promotion officials.
Sylvia has been on the shelf since getting steamrolled by Fedor Emelianenko at Affliction "Banned" in July 2008. That's more than a year of inactivity, which could be a factor when "The Maine-iac" finally steps back into the ring on fight night.
He will, however, have a little tune up before his meeting with Buentello ... if that's what you want to call it.
Remember that Sylvia has agreed to box former Olympic gold medalist and world heavyweight boxing champion Ray Mercer — barely one month after "Merciless" turns 48 years of age — at Adrenaline III: "Bragging Rights" in Birmingham, Ala., on June 13.
Sylvia is on a two-fight losing skid and has dropped three of his last four contests. He'll need all the help he can get to ensure that he breaks out of his slump sooner rather than later.
Buentello was last seen using Kiril Sidelnikov's face as a human punching bag for almost three full rounds at Affliction 2: "Day of Reckoning" earlier this year. "The Headhunter" went on to eventually score a late third round technical knockout over the Russian Sambo specialist, who later tested positive for having banned substances in his system after the match.
This will be Buentello's third appearance under the Affliction banner -- he outpointed last minute replacement Gary Goodridge on the judges scorecards to earn a unanimous decision victory in the promotion's inaugural show in 2008. He was originally scheduled to face Aleksander Emelianenko, but the Russian was forced out of action after having trouble getting cleared by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC).
Over his past 13 fights Buentello has only dropped two contests — one was for a shot at Andrei Arlovski’s UFC heavyweight title back at UFC 55 and the other was at the hands of Alistair Overeem last November on a Strikeforce card.
Affliction 3: "Trilogy" will feature a main event between WAMMA Heavyweight Champion Fedor Emelianenko and top-ranked division player, Josh Barnett. Former Dream middleweight champion Gegard Mousasi is also expected to make his fighting debut on American shores.

WOW! Affliction’s got 800K to throw away for Big Tim. I would say Tim wins this fight UD fairly easy.

Mania: I heard that the boxing fight is OFF! I might be wrong though.
This is actually a decent under card match up stylistically. Tim wont respect Buentello, so he wont be afraid which means he will let his hands fly. It might actually be a kind of exciting fight.
I wonder how much they had to pay Tim to get him to set foot in the same building as Fedor? lol

Undercard? Really? Disregarding his popularity level, the guy was in back to back world championship fights, almost won the first, and we know in the 2nd, but still, a top 15 heavyweight undoubtedly. I would expect him to be the 2nd fight on the televised PPV.

Anyone else thinks these are the guys that the grim should be fighting instead of Arlovski? I mean i still like that matchup but step up in competition slowly not go from chinless cans to chinless top 3 fighter. That said, after mercer beats up sylvia, timmy UDs the headhunter via longer reach.

Syn: itrs possible that they air this fight…but why bother? Even most hardcore fans are fed up with sylvia’s lackluster performances. I think Affliction will put together a great card and I have a feeling this wont be on the ppv…it will probably be televised on HDNET…but I have nothing to base that statement on, just my hypothesis!

Haha probly alot. . . I think Buentello can pull it off if on his A game. Tim is no slouch unless your name is Fedor.

They probably needed to have several extra pairs of size-48 Froot of the Looms available when Timmay soiled his looking at Fedor.

john im smelling an upset in this one i think buentello is gonna bring it and knock timmy back to the farm.. what do you think?

Randy: THere isnt an upset I would like to see happen more in mma! lol

I do not think that Buentello beating Sylvia is an upset. Buentello has always been one of the top strikers in the Heavyweight division, he is one of my favourites. He is a much better striker than Sylvia. I really do not see Sylvia beating him at all. Sylvia will try and go for his descision win as usuall and will be TKO’d in the process. Buentello and Arlovski should have rematched ages ago, in there first match they both threw a punch at the same time but Arlovski managed to connect first. Even though he won that match I still considered Buentello the better striker who would won a rematch. Now that Arlovski has improved boxing skills the fight would be a little more even, bu Arlovski chin would crumble as soon as decent shot connected. I think some people need to go back and watch his fight with Kirill Sidelnikov, his striking in that match was perfect.

Definately a win for the superior striker Buentello. Nobody cares about Sylvia or wants to see him fight, what logical reason is there to have him. I knoe he is a big name, but he is also one of the most disliked play it safe fighters in the whole of MMA. What a complete waste of money.

I wonder if he’s still under the same contract/pay as he was in Fedor fight. If he still gets 800K I’d be shocked!

I would like to see Buentello beat the shit out of Tim.

Yes 1-0 via submission(arm triangle). We have a fairtex ring in our gym now its badass. June 6th we’re having a grappling tourny with a bunch of good fighters from Bakersfield and all around socal. Im not sure if i will be able to participate in it tho cause i have a nasty gash on my heal it looks like i took a hatchet to my heal. and if it touches the mats it could get infected and i just had to pull out of my fight the other night because of staph! KEEP IN TOUCH NATE!!!! 623-4388.

What ever happened to Big Tim calling out Ken Shamrock? I’d rather see that fight… or Sylvia vs Slice! haha, too bad Tim is now on that level, but he has fallen far from grace!

Curious to see what kind of shape Tim is in for this. I’m surprised Tim hasn’t called out Dan Severn to fight. Yeah Dan Severn still fights, crazy eh?

I might watch this fight if it were free and I was home alone with nothing else to do.
