Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou vs Jan Nortje Dream 9 fight video

Did the "African Assassin" go too far or did the referee not do enough to notify him that the fight was finished?

You decide.

Soko is probably pissed off because he only just realized that he’s not a top fighter and never will be, so he took out his anger on this can.

by Green Inferno on May 28, 2009 8:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Funny. But not true. He looked out of it when he stood up. Think he was just in the heat of battle. Also Soko is a top fighter. Where exactly in the rankings I don’t know but he is a world-class fighter. He’s still young and has a few things to work on like cardio and pacing. He’s coming along nicely though. Few more wins and he’ll be back in the UFC.

did anyone else know frank trigg has signed a four fight contract with the ufc?

and that rampage wont fight machida next because its going to be rampage and evans as the coaches on tuf 10!!!!???

by ufcaddict on May 28, 2009 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rampage vs Rashad is a useless match up; IF Evans wins that fight then he goes straight back to Machida? And Lyoto fights Rashad Evans back to back? Screw that! First off, I don’t even want to see Rampage on the show; I think he should stay as far away from TUF as possible, I would much rather have him in the Gym working on his skills. Secondly; (and everyones already beat this to death but it’s true)why the hell do they insist on holding up the belts with this stupid show? And lastly, not that I think Evans would win against Page, but if he does, where does that leave the LHW division in terms of a #1 contender? Come on..

by JRE on May 28, 2009 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i know i dont agree with it… he is geting old and really isnt that good… there is no way he can be a contender in the ufc

by ufcaddict on May 28, 2009 10:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I read this earlier and felt disgusted that the UFC continue to stall the title fights for the TUF series.

What a f*ckin joke. Its all well and good to use some sort of show to groom new talent into the UFC but at the expense of the fans seeing blockbuster match ups???

This needs to stop….SERIOUSLY!!

by Ca$z on May 28, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yep Frank Trigg signed a 4 fight deal ealier today.

by MoonUK on May 28, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

why. who the F wants to see Trigg? That is so damn dumb! NOw we are going to have to continuously hear him run his mouth!

what division is he going to fight in, WW or Mw?

I honestly dont get why the UFC would bring him back!

by john on May 28, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He was probably pissed bc he kept grabbing the ropes. It pissed me off too! Fat bastard

by BOW on May 28, 2009 9:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. If Jan Norte doesn’t keep grabbing the ropes like a cheater, Sok most likely doesn’t pound on him extra.

Norte is a blatant cheater.

the ref only waved his arms, and soko prob just got caught up in the moment, if it was boh john that was ref he would have made sure both fighters were apart and thne waved his arms to call it off

by ruanfiy on May 28, 2009 9:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, and the bell was ringing like crazy, the announcer yelled Soko was the winner, the ref was down on the ground with them…

by Mahde on May 28, 2009 9:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But the ref was afraid to get in the middle. Big John would have had them apart right away.

by naturalshadow on May 29, 2009 5:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea he went too far there, but thats also a sh!tty ref too; you see the stoppages in the UFC the refs dive in and tackle the guy if he’s going after someone like that after their already out.

by O damn he got caught on May 28, 2009 9:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah exactly. I blame the ref more, soko is not a dirty fighter, probably just heat of the moment.

by Dragon on May 28, 2009 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What? He went wayyyy too far. Not only had the ref jumped in but the bell had rung repeatedly and it should have been stopped long before that. Soko sucks he has never beaten a real fighter

by hatteras on May 28, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you fucking MR? How has soko never been a real fighter? I’m not a fan buy no means, but you can’t discredit his accomplishments. The dude beat Antonio Rogerio Nog and Ricardo Arona, back to back , in their primes, by KTFO. Sto make my point yeah he is a real fighter and by no means a “dirty” fighter, he even bowed to jan after all the hoop la settled down.

Dragon, those wins over Wee Nog and Arona say more about about them than they do about Soku ie. they would both get owned by any good LHW

by PanicZoo on May 28, 2009 11:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i don’t buy the whole “heat of the moment” argument. you are supposed to be a professional fighter that doesn’t get carried away by adrenaline. soko went way too far.

by JB on May 28, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yea he definatley went way too far; but the ref could have done more to stop him too; you see TKO stoppages in the UFC all the time where the Ref DIVES into the fighter and tackles them off the other guy. This Ref was afraid to intervene so part of the blame should fall on him. The fighters safety is more the Refs responsibility then the guy thats trying to break an arm or bust a nose.

by O damn he got caught on May 28, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You’re kidding right? Not getting carried away by adrenaline in a fight is professional? So every time a fighter wins a fight and screams or runs around the cage, that is being unprofessional. Give me a break JB. That’s on the ref. If Big John was in there, he would have pulled Soku off just like he has done with many “unprofessional” UFC fighters in the past.

by wAyNe on May 28, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Very poor display of sportsmanship from sokobooooooo!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 28, 2009 9:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The ref shouldnt have to pull him off, he should stop when the ref grabs him. I’m sure he was caught up in the moment, but he knew what he was doing and he knew he was sposed to stop. I’d like to see you drag soko off a guy he’s trying to beat the hell out of.
No way can the ref be blamed. He maybe could have done a better job, but this is all on soko.

by BritishBulldog on May 28, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Look at the ufc refs, they practically go diving in there to stop the fight. Plus maybe they should get bigger refs instead of little 5 foot 5 125 lb guys. Another thing, you can’t tell me you can easily control yourself when you’re on a adreline rush either.

by Dragon on May 28, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who’s responsibility is the fighters safety? Definatley NOT the guy he’s fighting, cause thats the guy trying to beat the sh!t out of him! Soko did his job (beat the crap out of the other guy). It’s the REFS job to see to that guys safety, thats what their there for, to enforce the rules, over see a “good clean” fight and STOP the fight when necessary.

Soko has no reason to start wailing on the guy dressed from head to toe in black with white latex gloves on, so there’s no reason for the ref to fear jumping in there! There’s no excuse for the ref sitting there waving his arms back and forth and not even making contact with Soko! Guaranteed unless a fighters out on his feet (which Soko wasn’t) when a ref jumps on them, regardless of whether they hear a bell or not, they know the fights over!

Did Soko go too far? Yes he did, he could have definatley had more situational awareness and handled things differently; but was the ref even doing his job? HELL NO! Thats why I said, the blame is on both the fighter and the ref.

good post

by McArthur on May 28, 2009 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree with O damn on this one. Both the ref and the fighters share responsibility.

by Jeff on May 28, 2009 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The rumour is it has something to do with them both being from africa and comments made from from Nortje to Soko before the fight.

Not sure what he said though but it must have been pretty bad!

by Ca$z on May 28, 2009 10:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good post odhgc I would agree, they are both at fault, but imo the ref takes a little bit more of the blame.

by Dragon on May 28, 2009 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, the ref could have and should have done more, but clearly Soko went too far on purpose. Soko is professional, no excuse for not stopping.

Remember Matt Brown?? Had the guy all knocked out on his feet and Yves restarted the fight. Didn’t Matt stop on his own and basically tell Yves that the guy is done? He didn’t just go unload on the guy. I actually gained respect for Brown after that cause I couldn’t stand him on TUF.

by UFC Champ on May 28, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nothings wrong until the ref does something about it… It’s all on the ref, and refs get away with too much these days when they’re not doing their job!

Didn’t seem to bad to me. His adrenaline was probably through the roof from fighting a guy almost 150 pounds heavier than him. I agree though, I think the ref should have done more to let him know it was over.

by Tiger Uppercut on May 28, 2009 9:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Dragon on May 28, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just watched it again. Hard to tell if he was pushing the ref or just getting up off everyone. That spot light in the background blinds you.

Sorry Hatteras, from this angle, your arguement based on this video is “inconclusive”.

the ref just sat down and chilled out for a couple of seconds instead of pushing sokodjou away.. these little bitches of referees are dangerous cause you could literally throw them out of the ring and rain down some more punishment!

by RoB on May 28, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d be pissed off too if I was only able to fight in total freakshows. I mean a 225lb fighter fighting a 350lb guy? Dream better hope that Cuban’s backroll helps save them again.

by Luppers on May 28, 2009 9:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Both, what Soko did was unnecessary, he saw the referee stopping the fight(just watch the fight again and you will see that) and used too much more punches than the necessary for a guy who was unconscious. BUT the referee could have been more rigid in the stopping fight.

by Dave on May 28, 2009 9:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If you fight in the UFC, you’re used to the ref jumping on you when it’s over. Lot’s of times the refs get down real close to see the fighters eyes and ask him questions…Sok prolly thought that’s what was happening and he’s trained to finish the fight.

Ref’s fault.

And fat boy deserved it because he’s a cheater for grabbing the ropes repeatedly.

by Kevin @ This is Broken Blog on May 28, 2009 9:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Suko would be more used to the room going black and passing out or getting his head caved in with punches, thats how his fights ended in the UFC as I remember.
Nobody really cares about Jan or Suko. This tourney is a joke anyway and it was a bad match up, boring fight and ugly conlusion. Blah

by PanicZoo on May 28, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sure, he didn’t go to far. If he had left the building, gone to his car, brought back a gun, and shot the guy…. that wouldn’t have been going to far either.

by capt Doug on May 28, 2009 9:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

6 punches after the ref stepped in. They should fine him heavily for that. The douchebag was just happy that he finally won a fight.

by MMAFan on May 28, 2009 9:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He went way too far. The bell was ringing and he just kept hitting him. I bet he was on steroids.

by fj on May 28, 2009 10:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Too far. Ref was in between them waving his hand between Thierry’s fists and Jan’s face. Too far.

by cmd on May 28, 2009 10:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The ref didnt dive on the attacker like big john would have, that was his mistake

by Insain on May 28, 2009 10:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If he was mad at something, he needed to show that aggression during the fight, not at the end when the guy is down and the fight is called. Chicken shit move on his part. He should lose a little of his pay for that display.

Maybe frustration for not being able to fight in the UFC anymore. He doesn’t deserve the UFC..

by sudnvictory on May 28, 2009 11:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hmmm i dunno, all refs should physically get between fighters when the fight is over, especially when there is a language barrier. Once the ref properly leaned over Jan, Soko stopped. That being said i think Soko knew the fight was over but its a fight, its hard to go from kill mode to passive in a split second.

by Ermac on May 28, 2009 11:31 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Both the ref and Sokoudjou were at fault. Sokoudjou was probably just over-excited to win a fight after the curb stomping he received in the UFC. Anybody that could put him on his back = win.

by San Jose Rob on May 28, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think this is partly Sokoudjo’s fault and partly the referee’s. The referee didn’t physically do anything to stop Sokoudjo. Those little japanese referees aren’t very effective at stopping a fight when two huge guys are slugging it out. Maybe they should use referees who are physically capable of stopping a fighter from punching another, either tackle him or grab his arms you do your job don’t just sit there and wave the fight off.

Soko is to blame partly but this never would have happened in the UFC because they refs jump right in.

by Ballam on May 28, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he was just pumped at finally winning a fight. The sad thing is was against a total can.

That doesnt make it right though, and he should at least get a talking to. As well as the ref.

by UK_Chris on May 28, 2009 12:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

For having watches pride, k-1 and dreams fights, I can say that the referees in Japan are usually small guys who are extremely afraid to step in between fighters. They really need to find people who can do their job properly.

by Messatsu on May 28, 2009 12:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i think soko knew as soon as he stood up that he went to far….but at the same token can you blame him hes told to fight until the ref pulls you off a downed opponent and thats exactly what he did; yes the bell was ringing but the ref should have done alot more to protect the downed fighter because thats his job not soko’s.

by rain1983 on May 28, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

who gives a fuck? I know one thing, after the message he sent to the Nortje camp, no one will be fucking with Soko for a LONG time. He is no joke at all. Can’t wait till he puts it all together and comes back to the UFC. He’s got serious game.

by Anthony on May 28, 2009 1:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The ref Didn’t do a very good job of letting Sokodjou know that the fight was over, but as a proffessional Sokodjou should have know that the fight was over and stopped smashing on Norte. This type of thing is inexcusable and if it were to happen in Las Vegas it would be accompanied by a fine and a suspension… just ask Babalu.

Disqualification!

by Dana's a CrossDresser on May 28, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

We, as fighters, count on the ref for a clean end. You punks blaming the fighter are way off base. I am not grounding out someone’s lights thinking about stopping until I get pulled off. A hand in my face will not get noticed. I am focused on the mission at hand. The US refs due a great job of ending fights. In Japan, I’ve fought there once, are just horrible. But then again, over there, it’s about the spectacle, not the sport.

BTW, dont ask. I’m so old most of you wouldnt have a clue.

Just to correct Nikimono somewhere up there in the middle of this mess, Soko faught Rogerio not Minatauro. Minatauro is Antonio Rodrigo and his brother is Antonio Rogerio. I think Soko went too far in this fight. Plus I think he’s way over-hyped and has a long way to go to get back in the UFC.

by The Dude on May 28, 2009 7:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Those who are defending Soko, you need to watch the fight again! That wasn’t a hand in Soko’s face, that was a whole Referee! Again, I believe he should be DQ’d!

by Dana's a CrossDresser on May 28, 2009 9:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The ref should have gotten in between them when he thought the fight was over Soko got caught up in the moment. Anyone thats played physical sports knows that sometimes you just get in the moment and phase everything else out. Shit like this happend in pride all the time the refs were usually way to afraid of the fighters to get between them and someone would take like 2-3 unnecessary punches. Watch some Sho-Gun or Wandi shit even Dan Henderson pride fights they’d always throw a punch or a soocer kick after the fight was over even if the ref was running at them. Was everyone here crying when Rampage gave Wandi like 3 extra punches in there last fight when wandi was clearly knocked out and the ref had his arms around rampage but he just kept punching. These guys go into a kill mode and dont stop til there stopped we just do see it in the UFC cause the refs usually do a better job of protecting the fighters.

by Ground fighting is love making on May 28, 2009 9:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If Soko didn’t realize that there was an adult male between him and his opponent, and the fact that his opponent was limp for several seconds, then Soko is at least mildly retarded and should be in a state hospital! There’s no intelligent way to defend what is on this video! Watch it again! That was pure rage! I love a good beatdown! But, if you’re not gonna follow the rules, then go fight Kimbo in some back alley! I’ll watch that too! But, he took advantage of another athlete while he was unconcious. Very unsportsman-like and unprofessional. I have NEVER, I mean NEVER, had a problen being aware of my surroundings in a cage! Nor have I EVER had a problem understanding and following the intructions of the person IN CHARGE, one of only three people in the cage. This type of behavior gives the panty waist politicians an excuse to keep MMA out of some states! Shame on you, Soko!
