Fedor Emelianenko vs Josh Barnett can be one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history

Props: M-1 Global

Quoteworthy:

"I consider Josh as one of the truly best in MMA, I think he is really in his prime right now. Just like when I fought Cro Cop, he was in his prime as well. At that time it was one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history (and) my fight with Josh can be that as well.... Every opponent is a danger for me and Barnett has a great ground game. He is capable of adjusting his gameplan any minute in the fight."

The last man to hold the Pride FC heavyweight title and current WAMMA heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko (29-1) hypes his long-awaited fight against "The Babyface Assassin" at Affliction’s third venture, which is set to go down from the Honda Center in Los Angeles, Calif., on Aug. 1, 2009. There has been a lot of talk over the years that both Emelianenko and Barnett were avoiding meeting in the center of the ring because of the friendship they forged during their years under the Pride FC banner. It appears, however, that the showdown was inevitable — they are the last two men standing under the Affliction banner atop their respective division.

I knew this fight was happening, but didn’t know when… hardly onee of the most anticipated ever! Fedor’s UFC debut will be though!

Ehhhh. It took Barnett 3 sloppy rounds to submit Yvel. Fedor is going to destroy him. What I think is interesting is that Fedor is getting the hype machine going for this one. Of course he wants it to sound as if this is going to be a fight when in reality, it will be over quickly.

I have been waiting for this fight because I believe if Barnett can get this fight on the ground, he has a chance. Barnett has a pretty good chin, with only one KO loss to Rizzo a LONG TIME ago, but if he stands with Fedor he will get TKO’d.

He needs to takedown Fedor and use his 25lbs of Weight to wear on Fedor, and if he can maintain top position for a round or 2, he could end it with a Leg Lock or maybe win a Dec.. I would still put Fedor a 3 to 1 FAV

by Siple5 on May 28, 2009 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

News for you who don’t know, Barnett is way over rated and has no chance in this fight, he has achieved nothing worth mentioning in the last 4 years except a razor close decision win over Nog which he didn’t deserve (his only legit win against a top 10 HW). Nog took him down repeatedly and had Josh mounted for extensive periods of that fight, the split decision win was luck and Nog avenged the loss.
His standup stinks, he holds his guard sloppy with his left hand at chest level and right loosely held at his chin – a plodding straight line movement in and out of range, little head movement and no footwork. He also has a tendency to dip his head as he moves forward to attack. When he gasses he gets even sloppier and he does tend to gas out early because of this he is wide open to looping hooks and the straight right.
His TD defense and offense aren’t bad but can’t compete with top level wrestlers and his guard and subs from his back aren’t a big threat, Cro cop has spent plenty of time in his guard without being in danger.
He shouldn’t be ranked #2 in the world, maybe around 6 or 7. He seems to have a decent chin but he also tapped out after getting cracked in the eye in his 3rd loss to Cro Cop so his heart can be questioned.

You people make me laugh. UFC is king. They have the best fighters in the world. They put on the best shows. You can count on them once a month to bring you top level MMA.

BUTTTT.

There a few guys that don’t fight in the UFC that are still some of the best in the world. Fedor is the best Heavyweight in the world hands down. Barnett is top 3 Heavyweight in the world. Only a fool would argue that. And only a fool would say that a fight between the 2 of them wouldn’t be one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history.

Crocop beat him three times. Beating guys like Monson , Yvel, Rizzo, Yoshida while good, doesn’t put you at the top of the food chain. They all have 5 losses which equates to around 20% fight losses for most of them and if you look at some of their opponents, the win categories aren’t that impressive. If you want to be top 3, you need to fight the best in the world consistently.

I don’t see how this fight can’t be highly anticipated. Arlovski is hands down the best HW to test Fedor on the feet and Barnett is hands down the best to test him on the ground. If you want to see Fedor lose, its going to be to Arlovski or Barnett. Anyone who isn’t completely pumped for this fight must be a new fan to MMA, which I respect but don’t be feeding us your garbage about this match not being important.

Any fight with Fedor counts as being highly anticipated. I can’t see him losing to Barnett, but also don’t see Fedor ending the fight quickly. Whether you like Barnett or not, he is a hugely experienced tactician. Barnett is intelligent enough to survive for a couple rounds. This should be an entertaining fight.

by CL on May 28, 2009 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just cause all u know is the UFC, it doesnt mean this isnt one of the most anticipated fights in the history of the sport. Get a clue dude, most fans have been salivating over the thought of this match up for the past five years.

IMO, right now Barnett is the legit #1 contender to Fedor’s thrown! U can keep nut hugging the UFC all you want but they arent the ones putting on the fight between the 2 top ranked hevyweights on earth. Their watered down HW title fight is between a guy with 3 fights Lesnar vs. a Top 20 Hw in Frank MIr!

Get a clue TROLL!

I LMAO at your ignorance!

john didnt that top 20 just walk all over noguiera?

i agree these are the top 2 heavyweights but most anticipated fight in history?

serra vs hughes
gsp vs bj 2
machidas destruction of evans (maybe it was only anticipated here)
cung le vs frank shamrock
arlovski vs fedor

and guys fedor will never sign with the ufc read his interviews and work on your comprehension he pretty much says it without using the actual words..

by randy murders on May 28, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually any legit ranking system has both Mir and Lesnar in the top 7 or 8 if not both in the top 5. I bet I wasn’t alone in the fact that I didnt’ even know the date this fight was happening, so for him to come out and say that this is one of the most anticipated fights ever when most fans couldn’t tell you when it is going down is a bit over the top!!

by ---Caesar--- on May 28, 2009 12:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly, Arlovski vs Fedor was and will be more anticipated than Barnett vs Fedor – at least here in the United States. In Japan, Barnett is a HUGE name and Arlovski has never fought in Japan to my knowledge so they have no allegiance to him.

On a worldwide scale, it is a highly anticipated fight, but not “the most”.

Hopefully Barnett doesn’t come into this fight looking softer than a “wet jelly donut”

by ViolentMike on May 28, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry John, got to disagree.

Other than everyone getting all pumped up to watch Fedor fight, I can’t agree with “it can be the most anticipated fight in MMA history”.

Barrnet is the #1 contender because that’s all that’s remaining on Affliction’s roster. And if you’re going by the USA today “sponsored by Affliction” HW list then I could understand your misguided reasoning.

by UFC Champ on May 28, 2009 12:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Barnett would be a serious contender to the UFC HW title and would probably win it, within 1 year of signing with the UFC!

REAL TALK!!!

He would beat EVERYONE’s beloved Randy Couture about 8/10 times in their prime. Real Talk!

by john on May 28, 2009 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree 100. Barnett could very well be the ufc hw champ. There is no doubt in my mind about that

lol i don’t have much to say here…. i do agree that right now barnett would handle randy… though i prefer to say 4 outta’ 5 times rather than 8 of 10…. get with it on ur least common denominator john lol

by gobrowns on May 28, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Slow the FOCK down guys! Not “THe MOST”….One of the MOST. BIg difference and to not agree that on a world wide scale it is ONE OF THE MOST anticipated fights in history is just ignorant!

Randy Murders: If Barnett and Randy fought 10 times in their prime, Barnett would probably win 8 times, 7 at the very least! The fact that your “most anticipated fights” include Serra vs. Hughes (neither realistically being top 10 welterweights), and Cung Le/Shammy shows what level you are on….“U either kNOW, or you DONT”! Simple as that!
I think its a waste of time for me to debate with anyone that even brings up the Mir/Nog fight! Thats all I have to say about you!

Ceasar: Ranking systems blow for the most part. Only reason Mir is even RANKED is because he is a UFC champion. How he got his title shot and the circumstances surrounding that fight dont come into play when they make their rankings. Case in point, neither Mir or BROCK (who I am a big fan of), DESERVE to fight for UFC title or their top 10 rankings. Mir was getting destroyed by EVERYONE, then he beat Brock, who at the time had 1 more fight under his belt then all of us (lol), and needed the ref assistance. He then beats Nog, who came into that fight, simply A MESS!!!! Neither deserve to be ranked, but at least Brock has the potential to be a Force! I am willing to bet anyone on this site any amount of money that by 2011 NONE of us will even be talking about Frank Mir…and he sure as hell wont be RANKED!!! Anyone want to take that bet? He beat Nog on Paper, but he really didnt go out there and beat Nog. No one has EVER seen NOG look so crappy, not even looking like a top 50 hW on that night).

Only thing they rank accurately is the 1st couple spots of every division. Not knowing the date doesnt show that its not a HUGE FIGHT. THe date was announced Yesterday for crying out loud.

UFC Champ: If you think that I go by USA today Rankings or any other silly ranking site, you are out of your damn mind. YOu obviously dont know too much about the great career Barnett has had. WTF does being ranked high have to do with being on Afflictions roster?

VM: MMA community doesnt just include America. This site is INFESTED (lol term of endearment) with people living all over the world, not just America. THere are millions of die hard mma fans through out the world…AA/Fedor is bigger in the states, but on the worldwide scale that you mentioned, Barnett/Fedor DWARFS the Arlovski fight in BIG FIGHT STATUS!!!

VM: U know how much I respect your mma knowledge, but you are way too hard on Barnett. The guys would walk through 70% of the UFC’s top HW’s….and have a great shot at beating the other 30%. Matter of fact, if Barnett signed in the UFC today….HE WOULD NEVER BE AN UNDERDOG!!! Real talk!

by john on May 28, 2009 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate UFC nut huggers who senslessly Bash Fedor….but the lack of Respect Barnett gets on this site, is really starting to piss me off!

He might be the most under rated and under appreciated top fighter in MMA!!! In a division like HW, that is short on AMAZING Fighters, I dont get why you guys dont give Barnett the credit he deserves.

by john on May 28, 2009 12:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hahahahaha, the only reason he is ranked is because he is the UFC champion! hahahhahahahaha, its not like the UFC title is the pinnacle of this sport or anything! The Pittsburgh Steelers only got that trophy because they won the Super Bowl. hahahahaha

Seriously I don’t understand half of you on this site. If your not excited for this fight I’d hate to know what fights excite you. Obviously Penn GSP wasn’t as big when it first happened because it wasn’t even a title fight and the second one was amazingly one sided. I’m a huge Hughes fan and to say his fight with Serra was anticipated was laughable. And Cung Le and Frank Shamrock seriously dude what are you ten? This is THE MOST ANTICIPATED fight of the HW division hands down. Name one better I dare any of you? Yeah so shut the hell up!

John,

If Barnett was such a force, Affliction would have had him up against Fedor in the first or second event. Obviously things changed when Randy went back to the UFC since I’m sure Affliction was banking on Randy/Fedor for the second event. Out of Afflictions’ roster, I think the AA fight was more exciting and anticipated. Barnett got the shot by default, plain and simple.

by UFC Champ on May 28, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cogito: I am excited about this fight, just not to the extent I am about other fights. I was more exciteed about Evans vs Machida, Mir vs Lesnar, Forrest vs Silva is the one I am most looking forward to right now. Mousasi vs Belfort if it happens. I’m looking forward to this fight, but to say it is one of the most anticipated ever is way too much!

by ---Caesar--- on May 28, 2009 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

UFC Champ I don’t think you understand what you just said. Of course Barnett didn’t get the first shot… because he doesn’t have a big name value here in the US. People don’t know him and thats a big problem. If you want to pretend you know anything about the HW division in MMA you better know who Josh Barnett is. That being said let me address you Caesar. I completly understand where your coming from on other match ups being more interesting but that said its because Barnett doesn’t have that draw that those other fights have. Machida and Evans was two undefeated fighters fighting for the most prestigious belt. Others are big name fighters that have huge fan bases… Barnett and Fedor has potential to be epic and is a true HW championship fight. Even more to get excited about is that you know Barnett and Arlovski will be fighting after this. If Barnett beats Fedor then we’ll have a sick title fight between them and if not then we’ll get to see the number two and three top ten HW’s go at it. Its impossible for me to be displeased at all with the way Affliction is going with this. So stoked!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 28, 2009 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, I am by no means trying to discredit Barnett. Right now he is the #2 HW in the world. The problem is not that Fedor is the #1 HW fighter in the world. The problem is that the distance between the #1 fighter (Fedor) and the #2 fighter (Barnett) is just way too big.

Say Barnett eeks out a decision over Fedor by smothering him with his love handles, who is the #1 ranked HW in your eyes?? Is it now Barnett, or is it still Fedor? A vicious KO win for Barnett would do wonders, but I’m trying to be realistic.

Fedor DID have trouble with AA’s standup. The reason because AA has some of the fastest hands among HW’s and is getting super technical on his striking.

Barnett’s hands are slow and he is no where near as technically sound.

I’ll tell ya one Barnett fight that I would love to see, Barnett vs Lesnar. That would be a very interesting matchup!

OH YEAH, and I did address the “international” aspect in my post. But seriously, how big is Affliction in Japan right now? I mean, DREAM was about to fold before its last show.

by ViolentMike on May 28, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s hard for me to believe that someone isn’t just a plain ole UFC nuthugger when they’re more excited about Lesnar-Mir than they are Fedor-Barnett. When we’re talking about two matchups in the same weightclass, and one of the matchups has both fighters that are better than either of the two in the other matchup it seems like a no-brainer to me.

by Diceman on May 28, 2009 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cogito, you shouldn’t assume someones knowledge of the HW or any other division because their views differ from yours. Just because I haven’t been an active poster on Mania for very long, doesn’t mean I’m new to MMA.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion, yours just happens to be wrong. ;)

He looked terrible holding someone down and pounding there face in for like 15 minutes? Yvel is known for striking. Barnett completely destroyed his game plan and took it to him. He could have done better, I agree, but he dominated Yvel in every way.

by enzo-enormous on May 28, 2009 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This fight was so completely dominated by Barnett, how could he have looked terrible? He was sitting on Yvel and beating him for 3 rounds. He might have been able to stop it earlier, but Yvel is a tough mother f’er. You say Barnett looked bad, I thought he looked great.

I cant say for sure.. no one can. But I can tell you that it will be a good fight for sure. Barnett is good everywhere in the fight game. You wont… and I repeat… You wont see Barnett out there doing stupid stuff. He will come to win and he will use technique. Ive been watching Barnett for a very long time. Hes no joke. He has fantastic striking with hands, legs, and knees. He is very powerful and is incredibly evasive. Not as good ad Machida in that department, but for a guy his size, he moves very very well. Dont expect Fedor to just walk right thru Barnett. Im even calling Barnett for the win. Right here!

Barnett “may” very well ruin everything! Fedor knows that Barnett is a very dangerous opponent, in fact the most dangerous he’s fought in some time. He wants to hurry up and retire so he can walk out with his record. I am looking forward to this fight with much anticipation, but not more than other fights…

I’m new to this nut hugging bandwagon thing. How does it all work?

by Alex on May 28, 2009 12:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Just grab a sack and start swingin! lol

by enzo-enormous on May 28, 2009 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, you pick a fighter. Any fighter. Doesn’t matter if he’s actually good or not. Then you tell everyone how you have been a fan of your fighter since the beginning, and the people who like him now are a bunch of bandwagon-jumping johnny-come-latelys. Then you make arguments about how your fighter should be ranked way higher than he is and his opponent should be much lower. If you can’t explain it using logic and fight results then just type in all caps to get your point across loudly. Once you do this then you are officially a nut-hugger. Personally, I choose to hug Diego Sanchez’ nuts, but you can hug the nuts of anyone you want. Hope this helps you start a long and fulfilling blogging experience.

be careful of whose nuts you choose to hug…most of us regs are well aware of who is on what wagon and of the wagons that are already full…for example there is plenty of room on Kimbo’s wagon should you choose to join

The full wagons are as follows:

Fedor
Machida
Randy
Murr

Im forgetting some full ones, which Im sure some people will gladly add to this list…

Fedor is the number one heavyweight and anytime he gets to fight it’s one of the most anticipated fights of the year. I think Barnett is a little over hyped but a really tough heavyweight and hopefully gives us a good show before getting beaten down. It would be way more anticipated if Barnett had fought tougher competition since coming to affliction, beating Pedro then having a weak ass performance against Gilbert doesn’t really build up the hype. I also don’t think Barnett has beaten any top competition since? maybe Hunt or young Nog a that would of been years ago. I think Barnett is super tough but he hasn’t fought top competition since the good ol Pride days. All my opinion, I might be forgetting a fight.

“Fedor Emelianenko vs Josh Barnett can be one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history”

HA! What a joke this statement is! Until Fedor comes to the UFC nothing good will be “anticipated”.

by ducknow on May 28, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

John u always have a long post that is full of a bunch of ifs and stupid crap. First fedor vs arlovski was not a ppv hit and this fight will not be a ppv hit either. I watch fedor vs arlovski online last time and i will watch this online. Anticipation is easy to measure on a big fight on the ufc every time there is a posting on that fight in mmamania there will be like over 200 comments each time. Like when alves makes a posting on how he is going to knockout gsp there will be tons of comments for both sides that anticipation. yea this could be a good fight but i dont give it more anticipation then any title fight in the ufc from the overall mma community. For a diehard fan and the japanese fedor has a name but as a household name in america fedor doesnt have a name. Affliction is for diehard fans and fedor is known by diehard fans so thats all u going to get with ppv buy which isnt much and that is the truth. And frank mir deserve to be in the top 10 ranking he was a good before the motorcycle accidents and now he is back to that form in a shallow division he is ranked in the top 10. And when has nog standup looked good in the ufc? He looked like shit against herring, sylvia, and mir.

by desperus on May 28, 2009 1:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Ok desperus, maybe he should have added an adjective and said something like, “I believe this can be one of the most anticipated fights in MMA history to non TUF-era fans”. Probably would’ve been more accurate, but would’ve sounded like an asshole.

by Diceman on May 28, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ahh the TUF defense, overuse clichéd generalisations much Diceman?

by PanicZoo on May 28, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor said that he doesnt take his sambo career as serious as MMA career. Than I dont see why he wont stop competing in sambo ? I mean the guy is already the Champion in sambo and since he dosent take it that serious than he really should quit sambo and SIGN WITH UFC to prove to the world that he is num 1

Why should Dana keep hunting him down and ask him to sign ?

I also think that Fedor feels uncomfortable fighting in a cage, Look at what happend with crocop and look at wanderlei , Wanderlei lost almost all his fights since he came to UFC. Shogun is not better, he lost couple of fights, but he won against coleman and chuck.

by Il Nino on May 28, 2009 1:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Stop the BS Fedor and COME TO UFC, Dana will be more than happy to sign you , and you know it.

by Il Nino on May 28, 2009 2:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fedor will win this one as well. I believe Randy or Brock has the best chance of defeating Fedor. However, I think Barnett could beat Randy and Brock. Styles win fights, and Fedor would have a hard time with Randy or Brock if they were in a cage.—Ring is a different story—- With that said Fedor is the best heavyweight on the planet.

by CaptainAmerica on May 28, 2009 2:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Barnett via cuts (good GnP could make quick work of Fedors tissue paper skin, only question is if josh can get him in that position long enough or at all)

by What? on May 28, 2009 6:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Barnett was losing to aleks emelianenko in the first round. Fedor is twice as good as his brother so it will be a first round stoppage for sure
