UFC President Dana White teases 'special announcement' at Spike TV's VGA Awards

UFC President Dana White will be stopping by the 2009 Video Game Awards (VGA) airing on Spike TV this Thursday, May 28 at 11PM ET for one of his patented 'special announcements.'

With UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida" officially in the books and the upcoming season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) right around the corner (which not coincidentally airs on Spike TV), it would appear likely that White's announcement would be the naming of his coaches for the tenth season of the reality show.

White dropped a similar bomb in a cameo at the 2007 VGA's, confirming a rumor that Forrest Griffin and Quinton Jackson would go mano-y-mano on season seven.

Now "Rampage" is once again the leading candidate to serve as one of two coaches, with newly minted 205-pound kingpin Lyoto Machida ready to oppose him. The two would face off following the show's conclusion for "The Dragon's" belt.

This will not be the first rodeo for Jackson — he served as coach alongside then light heavyweight number one contender, Forrest Griffin, during TUF 7 in early 2008. He would later go on to lose his title to Griffin via controversial unanimous decision at UFC 86: "Jackson vs. Griffin" in July 2008.

Or maybe he's announcing a 2010 version of 'UFC Undisputed?' We shall see. Let the speculation begin!

For more on the 2009 Video Game Awards, check out a quick preview courtesy of Spike TV after the jump.

why would Page agree to do this, especially seeing as how he now trains in the UK…oh ya, $$$$$$

Well maybe it’s just that now Lorenzo Fertita is working on the UFC business 50 hrs a week instead of 40 hrs a week, and thats a huge indication of where the sport is going.

If he’s at the VGA,it’s probably for undisputed 2010!

Rampage and Machida as TUF coaches is the LAST thing I want to hear. When is Rampage completely healed from his surgery? It has to be soon. Machida, well, he doens’t get touched in his fights, so he is always ready to go.

There is zero need for a stupid reality show to put the title fight in the UFC best division on hold for, what another 10 months? The UFC REALLY needs to learn its lesson and not have its belts tied up on the show. The only exception I can think of, but its risky, would be to have a title fight and a #1 contender fight on the same PPV, and then no later than 2 weeks later, they begin taping the season of TUF.

Completelely unfair to the fans and the fighters of the UFC.

Interview with Cro Cop – "I will KO him in the first"

We recently caught up with Mirko ‘Cro Cop’ (24-6) at a press conference. Cro Cop is set to return to the UFC after being unsuccessful in his previous venture when he was brutally KO’d by Gabriel Gonzaga and subsequently dominated by Cheick Kongo in 2007, Cro Cop is currently scheduled to face off against former ‘Cage Rage’ champion Mostapha Al-Turk, whom he had some choice words for:

“You know he is a very tough guy no doubt and he has some good ground skills but I don’t think he will present me with any major problems no matter where the fight goes. To be honest I think I will KO him in the first round most likely with a head kick, then I can focus on working towards a title shot and worrying about some of the higher level opponents”.

The Croation star was in talks of retirement in the past,Cro Cop discussed his future in MMA and how this marks a new beginning;

“To me its not about the money anymore.I don’t need to fight, but my goal is to have the UFC belt and to make it up for my fans who I let down. Before I had some injuries and went through surgery but now I am fully recovered and ready”.

This UFC fan has absolutely no interest in seeing Machida and Jackson coach The Ultimate Fighter (I don’t even watch the show anymore). I’m even LESS interested in seeing the title put on hold for the next 8-10 months. Dana, this idea has jumped the shark…

Over here in europe?? Where’d you think I’m from timbucktoo?? How old are you, lecturing me about understanding the game, cheeky b@rstard. from somewhere else since you should know that football is the best sport in the world by far!.. punching someone in the face for a living doesn’t make you more of a man or athlete… Graeme Souness is a complete moron that’s ruined more Premier league clubs than any manager :/ he may have been good as a player but the sport and players of today are real men and it’s never been better!..

In the other thread son!(Coleman)

by Alpha Male 360 on May 27, 2009 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll never forgive Graeme Souness for ruining my team, he’s part of the reason that Newcastle got relegated. He was a talented player but an awful manager.

I have mixed feelings on tough players, to me there is a difference between being a hard man and a thug. Players like Lee Cattermole who constantly injure other players show what is wrong with the sport but at the same time you can’t fault players like John Terry for their toughness and work ethic. He may be awful at penalties and a bit of a whinge but no footballer is tougher than him and he isn’t a dirty player either. Keane and Viera were real hard men and talented footballers but too ill disciplined for my liking.

Right now my heart’s not in football after this awful season but Man U-Barca should be a cracking game, pity all of the Man U fans I know throw their success in my face otherwise I’d be able to appreciate their skills more.

Rugby League is a cracking sport that football could learn a thing or to from i.e. showing respect to the referee, playing on when hurt instead of lying on the floor, however it’s only supported in Australia and in the North of England. Union’s better supported but I find the game boring, there’s too much kicking and scrums for my liking, I find it all stop-start.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Graeme Souness is to blame for Newcastle getting relegated?? Ummmm, how??? Good points about Rugby league though.

by attakdog on May 27, 2009 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Newcastle has been my favorite team in the premier league forever! Graeme Souness sold all the good players and just ruined everything Sir Bobby Robson had done.. And that fat piece of sh*t Mike Ashley is the one to blame for this season if Sam Allardyce would have been given a chance to get the club back together this would never have happened!
attakdog, some may be overpaid but that’s nothing to be bitter about, the NBA players are getting paid more for playing B-Ball.. I’m not from Britain either but i am a huge football fan and follow all big leagues around Europe

by RoB on May 27, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions

lets be real Craig Bellamy wasn’t given enough cred when he was in Newcastle, Graeme sold him when he was their best striker even better than Alan Shearer.. How Jonás Gutierrez was on the bench in the last game is also mystery to me! Nicky Butt should go to Derby or something he’s been horrible 2 seasons in a row now and he plays every single game just cause he’s a “name”..

Were your from RoB?

by Alpha Male 360 on May 27, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Where are you from then RoB? Souness aint to blame, there’s been like 5 managers since him, and you’re right about Big Sam. The football might not have been pretty but he’d have kept them up, no doubt about that.

Is rugby league that nonsense where you only get six phases then have to kick it away? I prefer the traditional style rugby. And just to clarify, I’ve lived in Texas all my life, played soccer up through college and am entering my 10th season as a rugger.

by PW on May 27, 2009 2:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Sweden.. no i know attakdog Big Sam is good and should have been respected and got more time, and at some point you have to realize and accept that your team just isn’t good enough to finish at a top position.. the people that run Newcastle wanted to stress the club to a top spot and now instead of that they play in the Championship next season!

by attakdog on May 27, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Souness was the beginning of the end, he took a top 5 team and ruined them just like Dalglish ruined Keegan’s entertainers. Both men were awful managers for us as they sold our best players and replaced them with dross. If either had any competence and Shephard knew how to run a football club we’d still be a top 10 team. Instead, we ruined two great squads and never built on our success. Souness needs to take his share of the blame for wasting money on talentless bums like Boumsong, Faye and Babayaro and taking us from 5th to 14th. He should never have been manager in the first place and Robson should have been treated better. He should have either left in the summer so we could rebuild or have been backed by the chairman and the fans. Poor going on all accounts.

Ashley is an awful owner, he didn’t know what he was buying because the incompetent prat didn’t do due diligence before buying so he had no clue that we were in debt, which was caused by Shephard wasting money on champagne players, high wages and his own obscene salary. Ashley cost us by sacking Big Sam, bringing in Keegan (blatantly to appease fans) and undermining him by having his Cockney mates Wise, Jiminez and Vetere control transfers as well as not backing either manager with money and outright lying to both about their budgets. No way should Allardyce have been sacked in Jan, sure he made some poor signings (Barton, Cacapa, Rozenhal) but he is a proven manager and didn’t get a far shot or the time to do anything. Keegan was a publicity stunt and he walked at an awful time. I still can’t believe that he didn’t replace Keegan immediately and instead made a half arsed attempt to sell then brought in Kinnear to paper over the cracks and amazingly didn’t look for a proper replacement until weeks after he got sick, by which time it was too late and Shearer (imo another manager just brought in to appease fans) didn’t have the time or skill to keep us up. Ashley should have invested into the team after we nearly went down last year, then made a quick decision after Keegan left but instead let the club rot until it was too late.

Rubbish management, signings and managers have cost us our PL status and the fact that the 3rd best supported team in England with the 5th highest wage bill have gone down sickens me.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 2:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Good riddance I say, just coz you’re well supported doesn’t give you a god given right to trophies. I’m a Notts Forest fan sun, the championship aint that bad, you’ll have fun next season.

You hit the nail on the head with Ashley, it is ALL his fault, you cant blame souness who’s been gone for three years, thats plenty of time to put things right.

by attakdog on May 27, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

Hate to break it to ya Attakdog, but the American English is closer to the original than the British. :P

From around 1600, the English colonization of North America resulted in the creation of a distinct American variety of English. Some English pronunciations and words “froze” when they reached America. In some ways, American English is more like the English of Shakespeare than modern British English is. Some expressions that the British call “Americanisms” are in fact original British expressions that were preserved in the colonies while lost for a time in Britain (for example trash for rubbish, loan as a verb instead of lend, and fall for autumn; another example, frame-up, was re-imported into Britain through Hollywood gangster movies).

never understood why Bobby Robson left and why in the middle of the season, Newcastle started poorly every season and then went on to win most of the remaining games to finish in the top 7, that was a known thing and then they bring in Souness… Jenas, Robert, Bellamy and all of those guys even Aaron Hughes and Andy O’Brien was good at that time and he sold all of them!.. Blackburn is one of my favorite clubs and Souness did the same thing to them!
Peter Reid and Graeme Souness must be the two biggest jokes as Premier League managers..

I think it’ll be Shad and Shogun coaching next

by McArthur on May 27, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I like the idea. I wonder if they would keep the theme of country vs country and have USA vs Brazil. Shogun doesn’t exactly have the best English, so communication may be an issue.

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

even better VM…his english is getting better but you have a good point

by McArthur on May 27, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I like it, but maybe with Wandy or Nog who have better English.

by PW on May 27, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

US v Brazil would be the only way that this series would work if Machida and Rampage are the coaches. Personally I think that it’s a waste of time as neither of these guys need extra promotion for their upcoming title fight as that would sell PPVs and tickets on it’s own without the reality show.

It doesn’t make sense for Rampage to be a coach again as that was a weak series, he wasn’t a great coach and he already has name value. After Machida’s last few performances he doesn’t need as much mainstream recognition as he previously did. KO’g RAshad did more for him than TUF ever will.

I like the country v country set-up and it would be great to see a Brazilian TUF team but not at the expense of delaying this fight.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 1:36 PM EDT up reply actions

I like both these guys but it would be funny if Coleman just wrecks Bonner….

by JIZZO on May 27, 2009 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

Dana tweeted today that big announcements were coming, also that Shogun was in the office. Could Shogun possibly be the coach against Rampage to set up a #1 contender fight?

by VNDK8 on May 27, 2009 11:25 AM EDT reply actions

Rampage is already #1 contender and WILL be fighting Chida next…Shad/Shogun as coaches for next title shot would be ideal

by McArthur on May 27, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree McArthur!

by RoB on May 27, 2009 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Now that would be a good idea, that way the LHW title is not held up, the US v Brazil idea can still be done and Rashad and Shogun can win some more fans from the reality show. Rashad-Shogun is a match-up that makes sense, though it may be too soon for Rashad-Lyoto II. I’d rather see Rampage-Rashad but I don’t see Lyoto ever losing that belt.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Is Machida’s english good enough to be a coach on TUF, i know he has been learning and is really pretty good but still not sure that it would be far enough on for the show? Or they will probably just put in subtitles like they did with Nog and half the British fighters lol.

by Eagzy on May 27, 2009 12:01 PM EDT reply actions

If it’s Machida v. Rampage as TUF coaches, it’ll probably be Brazil v. US, so as to make up more drama (and avoid language difficulties during training).

I find myself strangely unmoved by the idea. I actually do like TUF, it’s fun (yes, I’m a reality TV junkie, so what? :) but…Machida would not be great TV (tho I’d love to train with him), and Rampage…well, he wasn’t all that fun in his previous stint in TUF, if we are honest.

So…I like the Shogun v. Shad idea more…still Brazil v. US, and probably full of subtitles, but…at least we can look forward to Machida v. Rampage sooner, and then Machida v. Shogun or the Machida v. Shad deathmatch replay…so…more fun :)

by Vox on May 27, 2009 12:18 PM EDT reply actions

hey I may know the special announcement. the TUF finale is suppose to air on Fuel TV according to dana whites twitter. he inked the deal last night.

by joe k. on May 27, 2009 1:13 PM EDT reply actions

im gonna torch that fucking building if they keep this belt held up for 8 months because of this goddamn show…this fucking show has run its course…this is the most stacked division in all of mma…why would you rob the fans and the fighters in the division a title fight in the most stacked division? shad won the title LAST december…and the belt has been defended once…if the show goes on as planned machida and page will fight in DECEMBER…

which means from december till december the 205 belt was defended only one time in an entire fucking year with the machida/rashad fight…that is fucking ridiculous…

it would make more sense to have shad and shogun do the show for the number one contender….shad shouldnt get a title shot soon anyway…so by them filming the show and doin the fight with shogun it would give the winner of page/machida a chance to defend the belt against whoever is the number 1 contender at the time whether its forrest or whoever…and then the winner of that fight faces the winner of the shogun/shad fight….cause if shogun beats shad there is no doubt the old shogun is back and definantly deserving of a shot..

but you dont have a belt defended one time in a fucking year that is fucking ridiculous

if its one of those special announcments thats bullshit we all already know that page n lachida will be coaches that aint a big announcement!! shit who gives a damn about that crap it just means we’re gonna have to WAIT ANOTHER 7 monthes for them to fight wooo hoooo!! like thats a good thing .NOT! pretty sad when rampage and machida only fight twice a year…yawn….. earn ur fuckin paycheck like anderson silva and get n that ring more than once or twice a year that shit is boring as hell

by blueballs4445 on May 27, 2009 2:14 PM EDT reply actions

IF they do the show with the lhw champ as a coach the lhw belt would be defended 5 times in 3 and a half years. That is what this stupid reality show does.

dont know how he won a “controversial unanimous decision”guess you have to spice up the article or maybe thats jesse hollands opinion

by hhddavidson on May 27, 2009 4:08 PM EDT reply actions

Because in many people opinions Rampage should have won the fight. It all depends on how the judges scored it, by damage or dominance or octagon control. IMO rampage had that fight 3 rounds to 2. Big deal forrest landed alot of leg kicks one of which did alot of damage.. rampage nearly ended the fight in what could have been called a 10-8 round in some judges eyes.
