Stephan Bonnar will be facing Mark Coleman - and his fears at UFC 100

Props: NWI.com

Quoteworthy:

"I'm fighting a different guy. I have to put the (Jon) Jones fight and that strategy behind me. In that fight, I kinda got knocked off my strategy, which was not to clinch with him. I hadn't fought for so long, so it was all about doing more and pushing a little harder. And I should've just trusted that I was in shape and tapered down a little more. I remember the Tuesday before the fight, I trained really hard -- I thought I needed to. And I usually don't do that. But you're gone for a long time, and your worry is that you're not doing enough. You keep pushing harder. For a while, I've been like, 'I want a good, veteran name,' and [Mark Coleman is] that and also, I remember when I first saw him, I was scared to death of him. It's really good to face your fears."

The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season one light heavyweight finalist — the second half of the dynamic duo who helped catapult the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) into mainstream consciousness back in 2005 — is set to return from a lopsided unanimous decision loss to undefeated up-and-comer Jon Jones at UFC 94: "St. Pierre vs. Penn 2″ last January. "The American Psycho" will attempt to put aging UFC veteran Mark Coleman into retirement at UFC 100 from the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 11. The question is, where does a win over "The Hammer" put Bonnar in a crowded UFC light heavyweight division?

Coleman’s scary for about 30sec till he gets tired and needs a Mr. Freezie

That and this fight doesn’t really do much for Bonnar besides pad the rec and start a winning streak; it’s a big opportunity for Coleman, but for Bonnar, not so much..

agreed..

Exactly. When this fight was announced all I could think of was Dana’s vlog. After the fight with Jones- Bonnar was apologizes for his performance and Dana said don’t worry, nothing will ever happen to you, you and Forrest are like my kids.

I guess if he’s not good enough for the top they’ll let him mess around until he wants to hang it up.

by DSmith on May 27, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah- how can he lose? I can’t imagine him losing this at all.

by DSmith on May 27, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

well if Coleman takes him down and Bonnar runs out of gas..

This is what I’ve wanted to see happen with top fighters for a long time. If they lose, keep notching them down until their fighting entry-level guys, then if they win, systematically move them up. Why keep throwing a popular fighter in situations where he’s likely to take three losses in a row? Let Bonnar beat up an old man then move to a mid-level guy, then fight a top fiver if he wins. I’m okay with it.

Yeah, I read an article somewhere in which Dana comes right out and says something to the effect of “Stephan and Forrest can fight for me forever” – that since their fight was what put the UFC over that they get a free pass, and that their records will not dictate their ability to fight for the UFC

I’m giving SB a pass right now, he had that steroid thing, and then blew out his knee. Hopefully he can put together 3 or 4 fights in a row and get some momentum going. It’s hard to put your fight game together when it’s constantly getting derailed for long periods of time. Granted somewhat by his own choices

It is Dana making sure a “big star” doesnt receive another loss. He already has 4 or 5 losses. And another would not look so good. So, they give him the Kimbo treatment. They give him a guy that the only way he should be lose would be to knock himself out or have a stroke. Sorry, the Coleman of 10 years ago, this would of been a good fight…..but he has NO business fighting at the top promotion anymore.

Sad, that Bonnar needs this to pad his record

There isn’t much to be afraid of when it comes to the Mark “The human punching bag” Coleman of today. I like Bonnar a lot and I hope he really puts a beating on Coleman and starts to string some wins together and gets into the top 10. I’d like to see Bonnar fight Franklin…that’d be a war I bet since they have the same skill set.

I give coleman the edge here, yeah I know, I’m crazy lol.

Hey at least the “I give coleman the edge here” part of the comment is worth a laugh. :)

Maybe its just me but i think Bonnar has been a real dissapointment over his career. I personally thought he was going to beat griffin at tuf 1. he’s got awesome standup, a very good bjj groung game. But he has never developed his wrestling skills. he’s lost to guys like evans and jones purely based on wrestling and inability to stop takedowns. he’s 5-4 overall in the ufc and one win to jardine was very questionable. he’s always seems to come up short against better talent so maybe bonnar has offically become a gatekeeper in the division which is sad, b/c i really thought he could have been a champ or title contender not too long ago.

by bobby o'shea on May 27, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions

To me, giving him the LHW gatekeeper moniker is a stretch. More like the gatekeeper’s gatekeeper. He helped put the UFC on the map and Dana will never forget that. He is not championship material but Bonnar will hang around and fight in the UFC until he decides he has had enough.

by DJ on May 27, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

He def lost that fight to Jardine and it still fn annoys me!!! It wasn’ even close!

by BOW on May 27, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Bonnar has very good skills and heart but his problem is an overall lack of speed and athleticism. As the sport grows, we are seeing quicker and more explosive athletes rise to the top. I’m a Bonnar fan and hope he wins vs Coleman, but stylistically Coleman poses a problem in exactly the area where Bonnar has struggled, defending take-downs. In a 3 round fight, all Coleman has to do is have enough gas in the tank to take Bonnar down a couple times, lay on him, and eek out a decision.

by CL on May 27, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Bonnar has to win convincingly against Coleman. Coleman is not a shadow of what he once was.

by TKO Punches on May 27, 2009 12:32 PM EDT reply actions

Where does a win over "The Hammer" put Bonnar in a crowded UFC light heavyweight division?

No where, but a loss should put his UFC career in jeopardy.

by mma_dad on May 27, 2009 12:38 PM EDT reply actions

Unless he wins in a decisive way, I don’t think it moves him up. He needs to crush Coleman.

by TKO Punches on May 27, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Bonnar, his first fight with Forrest was epic and he has a likeable personality. Unfortunately he hasn’t really developed since that fight and is still the same Stephan Bonnar whilst Forrest has gone on to become a LHW champion. I’m hoping Stephan makes up for his last lackluster performance, as in the Shogun fight Coleman’s cardio was laughable and he didn’t look like he should still be fighting. He’s a great wrestler but Stephan should win this one if he keeps it standing and I don’t see Coleman lasting the pace for 3 rounds.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 1:23 PM EDT reply actions

Thing is, Bonnars standup isnt that great. Hes got some flashy kicks, and his punches lack any real power. But worse is his standup defense. He gets hit easily,…very easily. But luckily the guy has quite the chin on him, he can take a beating and not be stopped.

His BJJ is very good, and no wrestling. Good point regarding lack of improvement. Compare him to Forrest now. Compare him to Forrest when they fought the second time. Forrest outclassed him, and yet Bonnar has not changed. He needs a real camp.

That being said, i enjoy watching him fight, he isnt boring at all,…and he should beat Coleman easily.

by Big D on May 27, 2009 1:30 PM EDT reply actions

I cant stand when the UFC gives one of their “stars” such an easy fight. Bonnar is not title material, BUT, he has decent skills and should be facing people like K Sos, or Jardine, or similar opponents. The ONLY reason Coleman is still around is that the UFC is using his “hall of fame” status to give Bonnar a win(which in an average fans eyes may look impressive)…And to seasoned, hardcore fans, it will prove that Bonnar is able to fight his way out of a wet paper bag.

by fightfan on May 27, 2009 2:33 PM EDT reply actions

Bonner will never be championship material he struggles to get out of the bottom of the lhw ladder look at who has the belt now and tell me if you can see bonnar up there with the likes of machida or evans. Hes stuck where he is and beating coleman he will still be at the bottom
