MMA Quick Quote: Brett Rogers ready to put Andrei Arlovski in check during Strikeforce fight

"When I found out I was fighting Arlovski I was excited. I remember watching him when I was younger. After that, I reminded myself I can’t get caught up in all that. I'm pushing all that aside because Arlovski is just another fighter now … I was supposed to fight Alistair Overeem and he got hurt. In my mind, this Arlovski fight will be better for the fans. I know Arlovski likes to stand and bang and I like to do that too … I have been focusing on my cardio and cage control. Arlovski is a lighter heavyweight so I will need to be well conditioned and control him. If he get careless or crazy I will have to check him and put him against the cage…When I go in there I just like to hurt. That is all I think about. After I knock out Arlovski, I will establish myself as a Top 10 fighter…I had my mind set on that Strikeforce belt so I will deal with Alistair after this fight."
-- Undefeated heavyweight Brett Rogers (9-0) -- who will soon face the toughest test of his mixed martial arts career when he tangles with Andrei Arlovski at Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" on June 6 -- talked today during a media conference call about what it's going to take to get the job done on fight night. If "Grimm" is able to get past Arlovski, he will certainly elevate himself to the higher echelon of the division and set up a potential showdown against the promotion's champion, Alistair Overeem, sometime in the near future. On the other hand, Arlovski is looking for a rebound win after his dramatic loss to Fedor Emelianenko. "The Pitbull" has faced a "Who’s Who" of top-level talent throughout his career, holding wins over Tim Sylvia, Paul Buentello, Fabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson and Ben Rothwell, among others. Is Rogers up for the challenge or will he be outclassed by the more well-rounded and experienced Belarusian?

Rogers wins this on chin power and Arlovskis lack of it.

It would have been fun to see Rogers knock Kimbo silly, but Rogers’ only hope against Arlovski is a lucky punch.

AA is my favorite HW and i think this fight with Rogers just might be alittle tougher than some might predict. But you know i will always have the upmost confedence in him and im sure he will dominate Rogers and knock him out.

This fight will be similar to the Ben Rothwell scrap. AA via murder.

Rogers is huge, strong, and agile for the HW division. He has a solid wrestling base which he has thusfar only used to keep fights standing. He also has extensive training under some obscure form of martial arts (cant remember the name) that he has been wanting to use in an mma fight but hasnt had the opportunity.
Its going to be Arlovski’s hand speed vs Rogers hitting Arlovski’s suspect chin.
Brett Rogers has continued to impress since I’ve seen him progress since the fist EliteXC he was on, but this is a HUGE step up in competition. When this was first announced, I said Rogers. Of course, he will be a big underdog in this fight. Andre will probably be a -500 favorite in this fight. At +350, I’ll take anyone HW that can throw a punch at Arlovski’s suspect chin, ESPECIALLY Grimm.

VM pretty much said everything i came here to say. I would like to add Roger’s excellent use of the of clinch and his weight also as a factor if he can close in one the pitbull. He also throws in combinations unlike most other HWs so flurrying on andrei for the clinch is possible.

Lets be real Rogers has beat up a bunch of nobodys and Arlovski is out of his league.
Although Rogers is showing some promise amongst middle tier fighters he will be getting exposed rather quickly in this one.
Andrei’s chin isn’t the best but it doesn’t have to be if he fights smart. Rogers will need to be real aggressive to get inside and KO Arlovski.
If he does pull off the upset I doubt it will be pretty and will most likely be something stupid that Arlovski does to show off against someone he feels he will be able to dominate.

Arlovskis chin isn’t really suspect. I would expect if you fought the highest level of competition you would eventually get KO’d. Rogers hasn’t done that yet and Arlovski is about to show you how suspect Rogers chin is. This is Arlovskis fight to lose because Rogers wants to keep it standing. Thats perfect in all of Andrei’s bad fights he is gun shy because he’s fighting someone who wants to take him down. Here he is going to show Rogers what its like to use foot work and get hit in the face by a top ten HW.

Rogers On Overeem: “He wanted to act a fool”
Brett Rogers gives his input on how dumb it was for Alistair Overeem to get in a bar fight with a bunch of bouncers and ruin his chances for a title defense.
I personally agree, what does Overeem have to gain from sending 5 dudes to the hospital, getting an infection and probably jail time?

Im not ready to say that Arlovski will walk through GRIMM> Grim is a very tough n sturdy guy with a TON of Power.. Andre will be light on his feet…Grimm will have to catch up to Andre, slow him down, and then clinch and then he will have a decent shot at an upset.
At +350, i have to wagers something on grimm, but I dont really expect him to lose. ya dig?

Rodgers will make a statement in this one. If he beats A.A. I will be a big fan.

I think Roger’s statement will be, “Is Strikeforce covering my medical bill?”
by naturalshadow on May 28, 2009 1:08 AM EDT up reply actions
i think AA is a little to worried about boxing and acting to beat him
by JG on May 27, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions
hope so Rogers just fights ugly and nasty… not a very marketable person but he’s a dangerous fighter

AA is going to punish the pilsbury doughboy.

arlovski will be too fast and should pick him apart!
by jslim on May 27, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions
key word: should
But if arlovski sticks to being arlovski we can see some silly mistakes that would cost him the fight, and i’m not just talking about the Fedor loss, he’s done it before.
by Alex on May 27, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions
yea you’re right Alex, he did it against Tim Sylvia and against Nelson when he for some reason decided to take him to the ground and ended up on the bottom almost getting submitted..
by RoB on May 27, 2009 8:29 PM EDT up reply actions
After his Sylvia losses he went on a huge 5 fight winning streak, broken by Fedor. AA usually wins, and should take this one unless something crazy happens. The only thing worrying me is he is still planning on boxing June 27th, and is still at Wildcard only training boxing. He will have to depend on his past training and boxing for this one.

Arlovski will lynch this guy, KO within the first minute.
by Green Inferno on May 27, 2009 8:12 PM EDT reply actions
Any fit 250lbs guy who knows how to throw a punch is dangerous, by definition. That doesn’t make him a legitimate threat for a top 10 MMA fighter.
Anything can happen, but in terms of what’s likely? I don’t give Rogers a better than 1 in 10 chance of winning this one.

I Can’t wait till The pitbull Get’s KTFO!!! just like FEDOR knocked Him out!! easy easy!
by JROKILLA on May 27, 2009 8:30 PM EDT reply actions
Well you will be waiting for a good minute because it is not going to happen against Rogers.I would like to know why you want Rogers to beat him so bad.Arlovski is one of the best HW fighters in the world ,has fought alot of the top level fighters, and you want somebody who beat a bunch of cans in EliteXC to beat him ,I hope it is just for betting purposes, because there is nothing about him ,that would make anybody believe he is a top level HW
by scott on May 27, 2009 9:26 PM EDT up reply actions
Rogers will one day be a great HW but right now Arlovski is too good a fighter for him and potentially this could be a mismatch. Purely because of Arlovski’s erraticness and Brett’s punching power there is a slight chance that Rogers will win by KO but Andre should be too much for him and I don’t see him losing. Arlovski-Overreem would be a great match-up and if Andre beats Alistair and Brett then a rematch with Fedor would be a more likely prospect. It all depends on whether Arlovski wants to compete in boxing or MMA because he can’t do both.

Thanks David for telling us what “should” happen. You just told all of us what we already think “should” happen.

AA in first round. Possibly the first 10 seconds. BR is a joke.
by William on May 27, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions
I predict Rogers doesn’t even land a head shot. I also predict a Ref stoppage late in the first after a brilliant performance by AA.

Arlovski by sick KO in the first! I would love to see Arlovski v Overeem.

I’m a huge AA fan.AA and Rampage are my fav. fighters.Bret is a large man with big power, but i think AA will out class him with speed, agility and power. Then Overeem will be next.
by SluggerCitySoldier on May 27, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions
He’ll have plenty of time to dream about beating AA when he is face down knocked out cold on the mat. LOL
by The Buffalo on May 28, 2009 12:50 AM EDT reply actions
Arlovski is gonna be out to prove to people he’s still one of the very elite HW’s in the world. After that loss to Fedor, he was real disappointed. He’s gonna be looking to reestablish his dominance. Brett Rogers got Arlovski at a bad time. Personally, I think any time frickin Brett Rogers fights Arlovski is a bad time for him.
AA is gonna win this and look like a beast doin it. He’s gonna destroy Rogers.
by Craig on May 28, 2009 2:07 AM EDT reply actions
I disagree with all of you on this one. I think Rogers wins by 3rd Rd. TKO. Although his previous competition has not been great, I think he will pull this victory out. Going with the upset
by horny for gina on May 28, 2009 7:15 AM EDT reply actions
Arlovski is over-rated. He is ranked way too high on most lists. I think he would lose to Lesnar, Carwin, Mir, and probably Silvia again. I really hope “Grimm” can expose him.

AA and Fedor are my favorite heavyweights, I say if both win this summer setup a rematch in the fall, why wait for one of them to lose, Fedor in the UFC would be great but for now Barnet and AA are solid non UFC heayweight fights for Fedor, I can’t comment on Roges I’ve never seem him fight, June 6 is a pay per view quality card can’t wait, it is June 6 th right?

Unbelievable I dont care what shoguns past is, this isn’t deserved due to recent performances, if were living off his previous accomplishments, why not let Chuck finish his contract with a title shot? Ha ha. Ridiculous. The guy wouldn’t stand a chance. I say winner of a Silva/forest, fights winner of shogun vs rumble Johnson. That would be sweet, and then we gotta new face mixed in, and potential new star. Who ever emerges takes a shot @ current lhw holder, hence machida lol I don’t care what shoguns past is, this isn’t deserved due to recent performances, if were living off his previous accomplishments, why not let Chuck finish his contract with a title shot?
