Clay Guida: 'I'm going to have that belt around my waist'

Props: Cagewriter

Quoteworthy:

After I beat Diego, I feel like I've fought the toughest competition in the lightweight division in the two and a half years I've been with the UFC. People see my record, and 5-3 is nothing great. But people who have seen my losses know that every time I fight, I put on a show. I've lost a few close ones. Roger got the best of me, in a fight that he deserves. That was a turning point in my career. They guaranteed Diego a title shot if he beats me, but he's not getting that title shot. I know I'm ready for a title shot. I fight better for better opponents. I'm going to outwork everyone in my division, I'm going to outwork the champion, and one day, I'm going to have that belt around my waist.

UFC lightweight contender Clay Guida, who is riding the biggest win of his career over surging lightweight Nate Diaz at UFC 94 ‘St. Pierre vs. Penn 2′ back on January 31, looks to derail the guaranteed title shot of another TUF star in Diego Sanchez when they clash in the main event of The Ultimate Fighter 9 finale on June 20. If anyone wants to play fantasy matchmaker, we could be looking at the winner of Guida vs. Sanchez meeting the winner of Penn vs. Florian by year's end...

I know for a FACT clay guida is not gunna get past diego sanchez . Clay is never gunna have that title around his waste so he shoulsnt even be thinkin about it!!!

by Zack Skokan on May 27, 2009 12:43 PM EDT reply actions

You know for a fact?
I suppose you knew Serra was never gonna beat GSP, or Clay wouldn’t beat Diaz, Or Jones beatin Bonnar
Its MMA and anything can happen
That said, Sanchez is too strong to be humped for the 15 mins but I still think Guida is cool and would love if he improved some of he’s skills and started finishing people

by IrishKev on May 27, 2009 12:49 PM EDT up reply actions

How does he think he’s going to beat Nightmare? He won’t be able to out-wrestle Diego or out-work Diego, and that’s pretty much all Huggie has going for him.

by PW on May 27, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

“Everyime I fight, I put on a show”… seriosuoly? His fight, and I use that term loosely, against Diaz was a disgrace! Diaz should have won that fight. I wouldn’t care if I never see Guida again!

by ---Caesar--- on May 27, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Guida has put on a lot of great fights! What about diego’s snooze fest against Koscheck. A fight that Diego lost by the way. Guida like Koscheck is a great wrestler and can pose a lot of problems for Diego. I did not hear this many people bitching when Hughes won all his matches by dry-humping his opponents. Hell I guess Serra won that fight over Hughes last weekend! Everyone needs to get off of the Diego koolaid!

by Doubled on May 27, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

You are aware that Dana nearly had to announce Diego’s retirement from the UFC the day before the Koscheck fight because of a severe infection, aren’t you? And Koscheck, a top 5 WW fighter, still couldn’t finish Diego. So maybe you need to get on the Diego Kool-Aid, which no doubt tastes better than the Machida Kool-Aid.

by PW on May 27, 2009 2:50 PM EDT up reply actions

“I did not hear this many people bitching when Hughes won… by dry-humping…”

Dude, what the hell have you been hearing (or reading)? The hate on Hughes for being a boring wrestler is deafening.

And the Kos/Diego fight is a bad fight to go by. Diego had Hep C and staph or something in that fight, right? And the one time Kos did decide to use his wrestling, Diego swept him and took his back in like 12 seconds. Bad arguement there Doubled.

Diego wants to be a striker now though, so he will probably stand with Guida and win a UD. Too bad. I want him to out-ground Guida and make him submit to strikes.

by Synyster on May 27, 2009 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions

Guida has not put on good fights. He’s participated in good fights but when he is controlling the fight all he does is hug them. He’s good enough to not be finished by the good guys but he’s not good enough to finish the equal competition.

by RED on May 27, 2009 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

EXACTLY!!!!!

The only exciting Guida fights I remember are the ones he LOST.

And the ones I remember him winning, he transformed into his new alter ego, Huggie Bear.

Is Clay starting to get the Chael Sonnen head disease?

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions

ALSO, if Clay’s fights were judged in Japan, EXPECIALLY the Nate Diaz fight, he would have lost by far. A takedown should not count unless you do damage. The US is still too caught up on wrestling. I mean, Cecil People’s probably doesn’t even understand that BJJ fighters want the fight on the ground……

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

exactly violentmike, the US is still too caught up on wrestling what the hell does a takedown do? it puts you in a great position to do something, and nothing else..

Doubled – “Huggy Bear” is nothing like Sanchez and he will pose absolutely no problems for Diego.

CORRECTION: Doubled – "Huggy Bear" is nothing like KOSCHECK and he will pose absolutely no problems for Diego. :)

Diego is going to simply outclass this delusional Dry hUmper!

I dont get where clay got this idea that he is this exciting, wanderlei-esque fighter. I cringe at every card that he is on!

Great point about if his fights had been judged in Japan, he would lose most of them!

This guy shouldnt even dream about having the title. I PROMISE that he will retire without ever even having smelled UFC gold!

by john on May 28, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions

i still say that nate diaz beat him.. yeah- he put him down, but holding a fighter down, and not “working” isn’t a way to score points in my book. he doesn’t even wrestle either! he will grab a hold of you kncok you down and as you get up he will push you back down. joe silva isn’t lookin 4 fighters to pull off a victory, he wants fights to end and wants fights to be exciting

guida by boring UD

by mikeybear on May 27, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions

o man diaz won that fight and that fight is a prefect example of how ufc should score there fight differently…when diaz won a round he dominated it and when guida won a round he held him….if the ufc had a .5 scoring system the fight woullda been diaz by UD………..and good luck holding the nightmare guida………………lmfao and good luck beating kenny florian and Bj Penn

by JG on May 27, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree i think diaz won that fight too

war sanchez!!

by ufcaddict on May 27, 2009 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Diaz got robbed in that decision, Guida didn’t do anything offensively to trouble Nate other than hug him. Then, he had the cheek to complain that it wasn’t a UD.

I can’t stand Huggy Bear and I’m looking forward to him getting destroyed by Diego. Sanchez has better striking, wrestling, cardio and BJJ, he is going to dominate this fight and send Guida back to gatekeeping mediocrity.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

if laying on someone is no way to win a fight than how did Matt Hughes win on the weekend?

by Alpha Male 360 on May 27, 2009 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions

MMA fans are so fickle (this isn’t aimed at you inparticular Alpha).

Guida has a couple of fights that weren’t traditionally exciting and now he is public enemy number 1.

Nate Diaz is a tough fighter with an awsome BJJ game, i don’t blame Guida for being cautious with his takedowns and attempts at guard passing.

Styles make fights and a good wrestler vs a guy with an awsome game off his back is a bit fire vs ice syndrome.

Let us not forget the wars that he has had i mean that Huerta fight was my vote on the UFC all time best, i loved it. The snarls coming out into the 3rd were classic.

Guida is a tough fight for anyone at 155 including Diego and i could see from just sheer workrate him taking a decision (its not my prediction but is possible). He will push Sanchez harder than Joe Daddy did and we may find that Sanchez post cut gas tank isn’t what is was at 170.

WAR GUIDA!!!!!

by Nick J on May 27, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Nice post Nick…I don’t understand why fighters get dissed when they put together a solid game plan and execute it. Guida played to his strengths against Diaz and it won him the fight. I’m not disagreeing that it wasn’t the most exciting fight to watch but Guida neutralized a very dangerous Diaz.

Guida always comes to fight and leaves everything in the cage and you can’t ask for much more than that from a fighter. Watching someone like Guida makes me wonder how many rounds this guy could go…I’ve never seen him even close to tired…let alone gassed.

I’m really looking forward to this fight. I’ve never been a huge Diego fan but he looks great at LW. I think the pace of this fight is going to be incredible and I’m interested to see how Diego responds to a fighter that will do more than throw punches at him like Stevenson did. I’m hoping Diego wins so that after Florian beats BJ we can see the Florian/Sanchez rematch at LW for the belt…great storyline.

by Buster Bluth on May 27, 2009 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

If having a history of being right matters (and you would think it would be all that matters on here but somehow it isn’t), I’ve called all my locks right for the last 18 months. Someone remember this post. Diego is a lock! If the odds are two to one or better, I will put a lot of $ on Sanchez.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on May 27, 2009 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha,it’s all good Nick!
i would,like him more if he would stop acting,like aguy who’s got the"Edwards Symdrome",Jumping around like a chimpanzee,yelling like a elk,burps between’s rounds,Hippy hair,Master of the dry humping…the list is long for his case!

He walk around talking about no one can keep up with his relentless pace and everything, and then he lays on top of them or gently hugs them against the cage and tries to grab thier butt every now and then.

I have to cycle on and off; work does randoms, so I only smoke one night a week, friday right after work; then clean myself out over the weekend just in case, I’m practicing with herbs so that when I start MMA, cycling on and off the roids won’t be as hard.

And besides I’m a light weight when it comes to herbs, I haven’t smoked in 2 years because of probation, I only smoke 1 night a week, and it only takes 3-4 hits of this chronic and I’m good for the evening.

thats like me…I spend the $ on the good stuff so all I need is a one-hitter or 2 per night….one problem I’ve had though is that I love those on-hitters before I workout, train, or do cardio…helps me concentrate and center my thoughts but occationally makes me look stupid at the gym when someone wants to talk to me….I just walk away without saying anything usually…haha

by McArthur on May 27, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Lol McArthur; yea I don’t think I would smoke then go to the gym; but it does help me stay focused, even at the one night a week where I smoke, and have a little time for self reflection helps me pick out the things I do in life that I really don’t like and work on them and helps me keep motivation up with the workout/diet crap that I hate doing but know needs to be done.

On a serious note, Marajuana is very beneficial in a lot of ways imo; and should be legal for its various uses

Diego is a proven commodity at any weight class. With a win over Huggie Bear he will most likely get a shot at the Kill Flo-Penn winner.

by PW on May 27, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions

its because he was basically a number one contender in the welterweeight div. and now hes 1 win away because a fight with bj and diego would generate alot of hype and is kenny florian beats BJ it will be a TUF 1 rematch where the last time they fought diego destroyed kenny

by JG on May 27, 2009 1:09 PM EDT up reply actions

He was 1-2 in his last 3 fights at WW not exactly contender status. He was good dont get me wrong, but he was not close to a title shot well shouldnt have been anyway

by lokie on May 27, 2009 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Kos and Fitch are both top 5. Kos couldn’t finish Diego even though Diego had a horrific staph infection. Fitch humped his way to a questionable split decision.

by PW on May 27, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions

He was 2-0 in his last fights at WW what are you talking about? he dominated Fitch in everything except for the wrestling in that fight, horrible judging when you think of it.. It really gives the bigger wrestler the complete advantage, all he had to do was staying on top and escaping all of Diego’s submissions which were many and some almost fightending…

I dont blame him for being confident.

However, theres something about him I personally find irritating. I could be wrong but im sure I remember him making some stupid comments about 3 or 4 other UFC fighters, some outside of LW. He seems a genuine douchebag, differing to most other fighters just doing the fight talk.

He did, he called Michael Bisping the worst ever winner of TUF after his victory over Mac Danzig. I have no respect for anyone who bashes fighters that aren’t in their weight class, not least one of my favourite fighters. The fact that he said this after a boring win over a guy who has been a relative flop since winning TUF and his brother went on the same show and didn’t even make weight for his fight sickens me and I’ve hated the guy ever since.

I can’t wait to watch Diego waste this guy. Striking – Diego. Conditioning – Diego. Wrestling – Diego. GNP – Diego. BJJ – Diego. Chin – Diego. And most importantly, Scrambling – Diego. Guida is outclassed in every single aspect of the fight game. The only question in this fight is whether or not Diego walks to the ring shouting “yes”, “yes”, “yes” to the sounds of “We Will Rock You.” This dude has always been my favorite fighter, but that last walk to the ring is one of the greatest entrances i’ve ever seen. Ive never seen so much fighter bashing, with the exception of the Diaz fight and MAYBE the danzig fight, Guida has never done anything but be very very entertaining. He goes in there and bangs with guys who usually have 5 to 10 inches of reach on him, and he takes down and grapples with BJJ blackbelts like aurelio and diaz. I also cant believe how many people are calling him names on a personal level. None of you have ever met him, and if you ever listen to one of his post fight interviews, he always comes off as a very hard working and humble individual who is always willing to work for the things he wants. Plus Ive heard numerous fighters say he is a great guy. So if you are a diego fan or you just dont like to watch him fight, then that is your opinion, but I think some of you guys leaving comments need to back off a bit and go back to your UFC archive and try to remember how entertaining Clay Guida was before ONE YEAR AGO, provided you guys have been watching mma longer than that i mean.

by Dave on May 27, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions

When a guy has boring fights, bashes other fighterws outside of his weight class and complains when a decision victory that was arguably undeserved should have been unanimous and it wasn’t because of his hair then I have no respect for the guy. His brother is also a fat loser who couldn’t even make weight for a fight on a reality show. I have no respect for either Guida.

Yes, his fights with Tyson and Huerta were exciting but I’ve never seen either man in a boring fight. He can’t live off these two performances for all of his career and his last two against Danzig and Diaz were not exciting. I’ve never been a fan of him but now I can’t stand the guy and I’m hoping that Diego dominates him.

by David W-S on May 27, 2009 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Well for all you know Bisping did something to him to rub him the wrong way. He is allowed to have an opinion of someone just like you are, even if they are in another weight class. Also, who the hell cares about Jason Guida, this article nor does any of the commentary after, have anything to do with him. I agree with you that he is a tool, but Clay is a winner in the fight game and shouldnt be branched in with his brother. Lastly, Ive been watching mma for a long time, and I know a lot about the sport, but im sure there are a lot of people that know more than me, but in the many years Ive been watching this sport I have never had any sort of real distain for any fighter. Granted there are fighters I dont care for but Ive never thought a fighter was so boring or such a dick that I “couldnt stand the guy”. If you dont like the guy or any other fighter, then its whatever, but when certain posters preach so passionatly about the fact they dont like fighters, it makes them sound kinda dumb because in all actuality they dont know the first thing about that fighter. So next time you are gonna say something about a fighter you dont like, maybe keep it simple, and a little less hate filled. I know people who have met Clay Guida and they say he is a very nice guy who bends over backwards for his fans, but you try to make him sound like a jerk. Whats so funny is the fact you cant stand him, but he along with alot of the other fighters you cant stand would probably be the first ones to give you an autograph or a picture, so like him or not be respectful. (Sorry I rambled on so long)

by Dave on May 27, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions

very well stated Dave. If i post positively about a fighter, it’s because i’m a fan, or i’m rooting for him or think he’s going to win. If i post negative about a fighter, it’s strictly about that particular fighter’s ability or style….it’s never personal. Even the guys i dislike command a level of respect just for having the guts to climb into a ring and fight, all by himself. I can honestly say there’s only one fighter who’s character had drawn negative comments from me, and it’s only because a bunch of shit comes streaming out of his mouth every time he opens it. I don’t even want to mention the name as it will start a chain that has no place in this thread.

Having said that, I can’t wait to watch Diego kick Huggy Bear’s ass, but not cuz Huggy is a dick. He has my respect of character, just not of fighting style.

Kg, Im glad you understood where I was coming from. Im actually a fan of sanchez, but Im actually more of a Guida fan, I just hope the fight is more competitive than you think it will be lol. That being said Diego is an outstanding fighter, but we have seen two different Diego’s enter the octagon before, and for your sake I hope the one who fought Karo, Joe Riggs, and Fiorivanti shows up and not the one who fought Fitch and Kos. Either way hoping for a great fight.

by Dave on May 27, 2009 3:28 PM EDT up reply actions

actually, i’m just concerned with the Diego version that fought KOS, and we all know why he didn’t fight well on that night. I think it’s safe to say that you will NEVER see that version of Diego again, as it was a complete anomaly. I was actually impressed with the way he fought Fitch. He worked his ass off trying for submissions, but Fitch was able to control him from the top as he was probably about 20 pounds heavier by fight time. Kinda similar to the Diaz loss to Guida in a sense, as some folks think the decision could have and should have gone to Diaz. I figured the decision would go to Fitch, but i wouldn’t have been completely baffled had it gone to Diego. At least one judge saw it that way. That’s the only issue with the current scoring system in the UFC, and I don’t know what the solution is. Diego should win this one, but it won’t be easy and he’ll have to work to get it. I just don’t see any scenario where Guida can beat him.

Diego will destroy Guida. He’s going to absolutely make him look silly. The Nightmare is just too damn athletic and skilled as a wrestler to keep down. That and his phenomenal striking will give him the win over Guida and for the record in the top 10 LW. I’d like to see the winner of this take on Maynard (with the winner getting a title shot)

thank you, it is so tiring to hear people attack on a personal level, many many people =female— love him and his hair. and he is a nice guy. do any of you haters out there have that many women comming at ya? boubt it. by the way this is from a small.pretty cute female. also, if your so called better fighters are so good, then they should not have a hard time getting clay off of them, they can’t and don’t, so add it up,

I like Clay Guida’s energy and the effort he brings to the Octagon. But I have to 2nd the earlier comments, he did not get the best of Nick Diaz. He won a decision but he didn’t beat Diaz at all.

Diaz loss the fight with a horrible strategy, didn’t listen to his corner but he didn’t get beat by Guida.

by Vee on May 27, 2009 2:25 PM EDT reply actions

Aside from the Diaz fight, I can’t think of a boring Guida fight, and 5-3 in the octagon should really be 6-2 since the Tyson Griffin fight was highway robbery at its best (would have been 7-1 if he didnt eat that knee from Huerta as well, but thats speculation). I don’t think he will get past Sanchez, but you never know, its MMA.

by Belisarius on May 27, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions

Clay has a single victory that wasnt won by descision in the UFC, back in 2006 over Justin James.
Dude just hasnt got the g’n’p or bjj a wrestler needs to finish fights. Add the fact that after the Huerta fight he publicly stated that he would no longer focus on being entertaining, and rather focus on winning. Since then every fight of his has been boring. I mean fair enough – he does what he needs to win, but the only way the guy can get a W is by being boring.

Add to that his recent whining about how the judges of the descisions he lost were be biased because of his hair. Come on man. Stop whining and stop making excuses. His gameplan is to grind out a descision by hugging his opponent and then he whines when some of them dont go his way.

Please cut this guy. Far better fighters have been cut.

I read that Diego Sanchez had staph infection when he fought Koscheck. This is something Dana White said… I can find the link if someone wants it.

I don’t think Diego Sanchez will be so easy for Guida.

are you the same guys saying how machida fights smart and this is mma

by hhddavidson on May 27, 2009 4:17 PM EDT reply actions

Whatever the opinions are about the two, it’s a great matchup for an exciting fight. Both go all out from bell to bell. I think it will be a bloody barnburner with no knockout.

by erba on May 27, 2009 4:20 PM EDT reply actions

The only way guida is winning this fight is by Clay N Praying his way to a decision.

by DL92 on May 27, 2009 4:32 PM EDT reply actions

This is really starting to sound like last week when NO ONE was giving Frank Edgar a chance against Sherk and look what happened… This is MMA, for all we know Guida could come out and hit Sanchez with a glacing blow, and open a cut causing the fight to get stopped (see randy vs vitor). Or maybe Guida goes for a take down and sanchez lands on his forearm snapping it (see coleman vs shogun). Anything can happen… To say he has no chance is just ignorant.

First of all do not lump everybody together, second of all is people not suppose to be aggravated by someone who just tries to hug his way to a decision.
All of these post are opinions, nobody said you had to agree,it is an open discussion not everyone will see eye to eye, does not mean that most of the people on this site is sh#tty fans, just means they do not like the same things that you do.
