UFC Quick Quote: Mark Coleman matches up with Lyoto Machida 'perfectly'

"I’ve been training hard with [Ernest "The Cat" Miller] and I feel confident that I know what his weaknesses are, and how I can exploit them should we meet in the cage. In my past fights I relied on my wrestling too much and it showed. Now I know that the key is good cardio and a sound stand up game, which I have now. I don’t think Machida has faced a wrestler of my caliber before and I think stylistically I match up with him perfectly"
Mark Coleman — the "Godfather" of the ground and pound, collegiate national wrestling champion for Ohio State University and wrestler for the 1992 United States Olympic team — talks to Latest MMA News Now about being the man who can solve the riddle that is Lyoto Machida. Perhaps "The Hammer" has been pounding too many nails, because he still has to get past Stephan Bonnar at UFC 100 before he can face Machida -- or anyone else for that matter. Then again he does have "The Cat" in his corner...

Oh, and by the way, Jesse, it’s THE Ohio State University :)

My wife went to Ohio State and I have never once given in to the “THE” part. I never will.
Mark Coleman shouldn’t be allowed to speak Machida’s name.

OMG I haven’t laughed this much in years, “the key is good cardio and a sound stand up game, which I have now”. LMAO, is he really being serious? This is the same Mark Coleman who was out on his feet after 3 minutes against an equally unfit Shogun. As for his standup, that’s an even bigger joke. There’s an old saying about old dogs and new tricks. Seriously Mark, you’ve taken too many head shots, only if the UFC’s entire LHW roster of contenders was to be wiped out in some freak accident would you even come close to getting a title shot, just never gonna happen in a trillion years. You’ve given us all a good laugh though.

why even post this crap coming out of the mouth of a senile old man! Mark “the shriveled up Vin Diesel” Coleman

maybe if he goes for a takedown before the rnd starts when Chida isn’t looking he can force Chida to use his own arm to brake his fall forcing said arm to brake….oh wait, he’s tried that already…its his pattened move

lol…Hey Mania. I LOVE that FOCKING picture! Its a classic. I think a caption contest is in order for that picture. Its an Oldie but GOodie!
I will never get the image out of my mind about Coleman looking like an alien after fighting Fedor, irresponsibly bringing his 2 very young daughters to the fight, and then having the audacity to try n introduce Fedor, the man that beat their father into a bloody pulp, to his young daughters.
This was the begining of Coleman “THe senile old man”
by john on May 27, 2009 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions
that picture actually won “photograph of the year” in a journalism contest. the caption for it was “daddy’s ok”. i actually love the pic. he let his daughters into the ring to see that he was ok, and he introduced fedor to is daughters to show them that fedor wasnt hurting him, or mad at him, or trying to kill him. he was trying to show his daughters that mma is a SPORT, between PROFESSIONALS, and these people are not monsters. well, fedor is a monster, but in a different sense. now, would i bring my 7 and 10 year old daughters to watch me fight? no. 12 year olds…ok. but this was not the first time that his daughters saw him fight either.

Coleman, I was a fan of yours back in your early UFC days so I won’t laugh, I’ll just be realistic. Jardine, Shogun, Griffen, Evans, Rampage are just a couple names in front of you. How could you think game plan for Machida when you will never make it that far. You need to just focuss on Bonnar and say No Comment next time asked about Machida.

Not sure why this funny… To me it is sad. He really needs mental help. I don’t think any commission should ever allow him to fight again. He obviously isn’t all there.
BUT, but, but… Coleman in his “hay day” would…actually he’d have no chance at any point in time…nevermind. His cardio is top notch though…I’ll give him that. That 3 round display against Shogun was phenomenal. The only person in the arena in worse shape than Shogun that night was Coleman. Wow, that was a lot of fighter bashing.

by McArthur on May 27, 2009 7:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Coleman has a great point here!! After he runs roughshod through Machida and snatches the LHWT belt, he should immediately be matched against the winner of Mir/Lesnar. After he demolishes the HWT champ and captures his second belt, the fun really begins. We should withdraw all troops from overseas, and instead send in Coleman, who will rid the region of terrorists within a week. Wonder if Stephan Bonnar realizes he’ll be torn to shreds by the unstoppable wrecking machine that is Mark Coleman?
by CL on May 27, 2009 12:09 AM EDT up reply actions
It seems like a very weak attempt at a title shot, how could anyone take this seriously.
by Dragon on May 27, 2009 7:39 AM EDT up reply actions
Its just ridiculous how Dana White says he doesn’t want Chuck Liddell fighting in the ufc anymore because he’s worried about his health. But he continues to book Coleman who’s older than Liddell and who’s odviously not got a full deck anymore if he really believes what he’s saying here.
by JT on May 26, 2009 10:50 PM EDT up reply actions
i guess he just cares about chuck as a friend, whereas he doesnt really mind if coleman has to be taken out in the yard one day and shot. haha. oh dear.

Right on the money. Sometimes Dana White’s logic can be a little off kilt, to say the least.

I want to see this, because before the Rashad fight, Machida said if Rashad got him down, he “wouldn’t stop attacking” from the bottom.

screw it…let em try. Why not? I hate machida but I have to admit he is damn good. And he has gotten more aggressive which has made him better. I don’t think he would have beaten rashad if he sat back and didn’t attack…it was the fact that rashad had to worry about machida’s offense that took rashad off his game…but anyway I guess what I’m sayin is, if rampage doesn’t beat em why not just give coleman a chance. I don’t think anyone else in that division will be able to beat him if page can’t so screw it let coleman have his chance now before he turns 50 waiting for his turn.
by trbtrouble on May 26, 2009 9:18 PM EDT reply actions
Hey Mark, pass that sh*t. Coleman is a moron. The fact that he even thinks he would ever deserve a title shot is proof as to how delusional he is. Even if Machida had both arms and one leg amputated, Coleman would still get beaten down. Machida wouldn hop around on one leg like a spastic, and then kick Mark in the head for the KO. Sometimes there is something to be said for voluntary euthanasia. Go away MArk, no one likes you.

by DAVE A on May 26, 2009 10:12 PM EDT reply actions
Coleman is a moron, he is nowhere near UFC caliber and will be destroyed by Bonnar at 100 so the fact that he thinks that not only is he worthy of a title shot but that he could actully beat the best 205lbr in the world is mind boggling. And I don’t care how good The Cat is at karate, he knows sod all about MMA. Karate is really difficult to adapt to MMA and only really talented martial artists like Machida have been successful with that style, Ernest Miller would have no clue how to deal with Machida’s style in MMA and Coleman’s far too old to learn new tricks. Dumbest quote of the year by far.

Anyone notice in Dana’s Videoblog episode 4 of this past PPV, Mark Coleman makes an appearance in the footage along side Frankie Edgar and Matt Serra as it seems they are awaiting for the post fight press conference?
On a side note, did anyone catch Sojouko’s performance this morning? You could almost see he knew that his fight may be last ever. Dont know the reason he kept hitting, but obviously he needed to get that out. It happens.
