UFC 98 medical suspensions and injuries

The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its list of medical suspensions for UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida," which took place on Saturday, May 23 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

With several of the bouts ending early, there were quite a few fighters who were flagged follow up visits with their doctors, including Rashad Evans — who was put to sleep by an assault courtesy of Lyoto Machida — and Sean Sherk — who was outstruck for three rounds by Frank Edgar.

Xavier Foupa-Pokam will also need to give his melon a rest after Drew McFedries pounded on it en route to a brutal first round technical knockout. And Andre Gusmao didn’t get off easy either after going limp against Krzysztof Soszynski.

Here is the complete list of UFC 98 injuries and their medical instructions:

Star-divide

Rashad Evans: Suspended until July 23 with no contact until July 8.
Drew McFedries: Suspended until December 10 unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor following an X-ray on his right wrist.
Xavier Foupa-Pokam: Suspended until July 8 with no contact until June 23.
Sean Sherk: Suspended until July 8 with no contact until June 23.
Patrick Barry: Suspended until June 23 with no contact until June 14 or until December 10 unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor following an X-ray on his right foot.
Phillipe Nover: Suspended until June 23 with no contact until June 14.
Kyle Bradley: Suspended until December 10 unless cleared by an orthopedic doctor following an X-ray on his right hand.
Andre Gusmao: Suspended until July 23 with no contact until July 8.
Dave Kaplan: Suspended until June 23 with no contact until June 14.

Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

It’s funny how the guys who did the knocking out, got 6 months longer suspeneded time than the guys that got knocked out.

by getrawbc on May 27, 2009 6:29 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s because they hit them so hard that they broke their hands..

I wonder how long we will wait before we see Lyoto Machida’s name on this list…

by JB on May 26, 2009 11:59 PM EDT up reply actions

That baseball bat better be at least 6 feet long if you want to hit Machida!

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

I admire your unswerving loyalty toward Rampage. I am concerned, however, that your fragile psyche may become irreversibly damaged when Machida mauls your beloved. DUDE, there is no way Rampage wins this fight!

by BigRedOne on May 26, 2009 10:10 PM EDT up reply actions

There is a way, it’s just very unlikely.

by prokstar on May 26, 2009 10:26 PM EDT up reply actions

No, the Rampage huggers will just say that the normal Rampage didn’t showup, is getting old, and anyother excuse they can come up with. I like Rampage a lot, but I see it going down similar to the Machida/Evans fight.

by MM_Eh on May 26, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I see it even more similar to the Machida/Thiago Silva fight. Good night, Lucy…

there’s no one in the LHW division that’s just gonna walk through rampage!! he’s been at the top of the food chain a lot longer than machida has. he’s fought a who’s who in ufc and pride, and is still improving. keep in mind he didn’t get beat out of his belt, he got outpointed and arguably robbed of it. no LHW in the ufc can be comfortable as the champ until they beat Rampage. people talk about machida not getting his face messed up, when was the last time u saw rampage’s face messed up in the ufc??

that’s original. i know lyoto’s got talent, but why all the hype all of a sudden?? who’s he beat?? no one in the ufc other than a talented, but young rashad who’s never dealt with adversity and defeat until now. and please don’t say rich franklin, lol, the ufc fed that guy cans for years to pump up his image. bj penn, who he outweighed by probably 20-30 lbs. put machida to the grindstone, give him say, rampage, shogun, griffin, jardine, in no particular order, he gets through all them, i’m on his nuts right along with u

by deuce 4 on May 26, 2009 11:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Duece, dont argue with these trolls. a week ago, all they did was Bash Machida and talk about how Rashad was going to take his head off….Now all of the sudden, he is just going to walk through everyone!

duece. the 1st sentence of your post tells it all: “NO one in the LHW division is going to walk through Rampage”….Totally FOCKING agree Man! Machida might win the fight, but he is actually going to be tested in the process. I wont be the least bit surprised if Rampage beats him, but on the other hand, Lyoto is more then capable of getting the win also. Guarentee that Lyoto cant FINISH Page, and this is coming from an actual die Hard Machida fan thats been supporting Lyoto way before Sunday Morning, unlike 80% OF YOU!!!! If Rampage wins, it will be by Ko. If Machida wins it will be by Decision.

All I know, is that its going to be a very entertaining, and competitive fight!

by john on May 27, 2009 7:31 AM EDT up reply actions

i appreciate machida more as a fighter with his last 2 finishes but theres not way hes taking out my boy rampage. if hes smart hell take lyoto down(HE WILL) and pound him out, if he strikes with him he can still catch machida but machida will have the advantage in the standup. if knees on the ground were involved rampage would win hands down.

WAR RAMPAGE

by Clinton Jackson (formerly Jared) on May 27, 2009 7:40 AM EDT up reply actions

I am not sure that wrestling him down is the best way to fight machida. Rashad and Tito are 2 damn good wrestlers. I think Rampage can win, but if I had to bet my money would go on Machida. I just think that Machida is a better all around fighter. He has the edge in BJJ, striking (not boxing), defense, and speed.

by naturalshadow on May 27, 2009 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Rampage has been my favorite fighter since the Arona slam. However, for the past year now I have been saying that once Machida gets the belt around his waist, he wont be letting it go any time soon. He’s the 205’s version of Fedor, Anderson, GSP, or BJ. It would be the happiest day of my life if Rampage can beat Machida, but the only way I see that happening is if he can manage to get close enough to clip Machida and take him out with one punch. For the most part, that will be pretty much impossible with Rampages current fighting style, he likes to press forward and look for the big KO, which meshes perfectly with MAchida’s counter style. Can Rampage catch him? Hells yes, as long as he learns to be patient he can do it, hell Rashad got a punch in there durring one of the flurries, thats all it will take for Rampage to end it. It’s just a matter of patience, and when the opening comes, don’t fuckin’ miss! lol

by Tom on May 27, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions

Rampage has one way to win this fight, and one way only. A 1 punch KO. Machida has yet to lost a around in about 5 years. Rampage got beat via decision to Forrest Griffin. Why? Because Rampage got frustrated (yeah he tweaked his knee too, but he was FRUSTRATED). If he got frustrated fighting Forrest, he head is going to implode and he is going to go all “Rampage” and run in swinging or just sit back confused as heck.

Fighting is also a mental game. As far as their “mentals” go, Machida is at infinity and Rampage is subzero.

I for one am not jumping on the Dragon Wagon. I have been following Rampage for quite some time (Pride Days) and I have seen him at his best and worse. The one thing you can count on from is this… Win, Lose, Draw, I will be behind RAMPAGE no matter what.

I don’t plan on jumping off the Rampage Bandwagon, like alot of other people have done, and count Rampage out.

I know that you can never count out a fighter with the Heart of Rampage.

Rampage has alot more heart then Rashad, and it will show when him and Machida fight for supremacy.

And when Machida is defeated, I will be back here on MMAMANIA Forum, and I want to see how many will then be on the Machida bandwagon.

I am a known Machida nut-hugger / urnie-sipper for quite some time now. If someone think not, please refer to the archives.

I LOVE the name Dragon Wagon. Mad props Eddie!!!! That is a name that will stick! Unfortunately, that is about the only thing that sticks to Machida (well, that and the championship belt)

I hereby consider myself the conductor of the Dragon Wagon (TM’d by Eddie) and will NEVER leave, even if he loses 4 fights in a row and needs to beg Gary Shaw to get him a fight somewhere. I am on it till the end.

ALL ABOOOOAAARD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

(PS, heck, I am still a huge Leben fan, so trust me, I ain’t going no where; not saying Leben is champ or unbeatble, just saying, I don’t jump ship cuz my man lost)

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont think that the Dragon bandwagon or Dragon wagon was new VM.Iknow that i use that term a few times before and John also! You can go check it on other treads!
But it’s a good name though!
Sorry Eddie for that!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 27, 2009 12:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Not saying that I am just aboard now, I am actually possibly the first on here that appreciated his style, at least one of. There were a few karate aces that came out of the woodwork after the Hoger fight.

But that was the fist time I saw the term “Dragon Wagon” and thought it was clever. Props to whomever coined it.

Two names that are commonly used that I coined are

Huggie Bear for Clay Guida, and I see it in full effect in his new thread today.

Charles “Tupperware” McCarthy – because he was a couple steps below a can.

However, and thank goodness, we haven’t heard much from him for a while.

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Dragon Wagon does sound good. It has a nice ring to it. But I unfortunately will not be on that Wagon during the next LHW title match. I am going to be howling like the wolf. And jamming to “Can’t Be Touched” by Roy Jones Jr.

by Eddie on May 27, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions

oh lord, i think you just gave it a name, “the dragon wagon”

by JB on May 27, 2009 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions

These guys are very fickle.

Man I swear Machida didn’t have so many “die hard fans” before.

by Brandon on May 27, 2009 6:11 AM EDT up reply actions

And Rashad did before he KO’d Chuck???

Everybody shines when they are champ (except Matt Serra and Tim Sylvia = its in the written rules).

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions

I for one have been on the band wagon ever since the Sokodojou fight, dude is fun to watch, especially now that he is knocking people out!! :-) But he was fun to watch before, he has excellent footwork.

by Dragon on May 27, 2009 7:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I jumped aboard after the David Heath fight. After seeing his style for the first time against Hoger, I was admittedly quite confused at the time. But then I thought about it. It is a fight. If you are SMART, the objective is to inflict as much damage to your opponent, while taking as little damage to yourself. In essence, that is Lyoto Machida.

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 12:01 PM EDT up reply actions

for sure eddie awesome post and im with you

by Jared on May 27, 2009 7:41 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m a fan of rampage to, and he is a tough sob, but he doesn’t have the hand speed of rashad and even he couldn’t land any good shots.
rampage is gona get knocked the fuck out. you feel me

by vinrex7 on May 27, 2009 4:54 AM EDT reply actions

Hand speed is one area that Rampage is not lacking.

by ViolentMike on May 27, 2009 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Shouldn’t Coleman be on this list…

by McArthur on May 27, 2009 8:06 AM EDT reply actions

rampage will catch lyoto in the gap….not machida coming in, but him coming out….thats where he will get caught….rampage’s boxing is much improved he is knocking guys out with counter punches….chuck and wanderlei….counter right hook on chuck and counter left with wanderlei….and they were in that little bit of a gap they left him enough space to get caught….so with lyoto’s new aggresiveness he’s leaving himself open….as long as its a good fight i dont care but im taking rampage on this one….
