No chance. Rampage would get mauled worse than Rashad. He doesn’t have the speed, or the agility to fight Machida. I don’t know who could fight him.
by Caknakker on May 26, 2009 12:32 PM EDT reply actions
I don’t give Rampage much of a chance either. He’s going to get picked apart and he’ll get really frustrated by that and start making mistakes. I’ll give Rampage an edge over Rashad in terms of boxing defence so he might be able to deflect some of Machida’s shots better than Rashad was able to but Machida’s kicks are still going to find their mark. Machida is just so pin point accurate that he may not have as high of a percentage for landing shots but he’s still going to land a lot more than Rampage will be able to. Rampage doesn’t have the fastest hands or feet and his footwork is predictable.
I think if Page wants to win this fight then he has to do what very few have been able to do and that is get Machida on his back. His strength is in his stand up and putting him on his back takes away all his ellusiveness and fancy footwork and essentially nullifies his karate. That’s easier said than done though. You have to catch him if you want to do that. If Page takes this approach then I suggest he goes and trains with better wrestlers than Kongo and Bisping as well. All the UK guys over there aren’t the most proficient at wrestling.

Machida is underrated from his back. Rampage looked confused on the ground in his fight with Griffin and the lack of knees is going to hurt Rampage also. I think Machida still takes this fight but not as spectacular as his fight with Rashad was. You can never count a man like Rampage out, he might be the first guy who doesn’t get all confused and scared when he fights Machida…btw Rashad was confused and scared.

@ JG.
agreed. man. people are jumping on this bandwagon awful effing fast. machida’s KO blew my mind. but i never thought rashad was in his class anyway. a KO of an aging liddell hanging his hands at his ass when he throws, and of griffin, who has a glass chin and was winning until he was finally was provoked into brawling, doesnt sell me on rashad as more than a one and out champ. i thought ramp would crush rashad and he sure as hell stands a chance against machida. he has the best technical boxing and footwork at LHW, a better chin than evans, and heavier hands. he could also throw machida through the octagon floor if he actually fights a smart fight and tries to use his boxing to close the distance and his wrestling to control the pace and score some points. i will fully understand when machida is called as a heavy favorite to win, and can see him outpointing ramp if ramp just tries to box him and look for that one punch KO. but dont underestimate ramp. and dont overestimate forrest and rashad as fighters nearly as powerful physically or technically sound in the striking arena as rampage.
this is a lot closer than people are saying. believe it.
by Hardcase on May 26, 2009 2:23 PM EDT up reply actions
yeah right, it will be a totall mismatch, rampages hands, are way slower than rashads, he doenst have rashads footwork, he is just a big slow plodder, who just moves straight ahead. You really have to be stupid to think that rampage will be able to land a punch on machida. He is on an entirely different level, when anderson silva, who by the way would destroy rampage, says that machida makes him look silly also and even he cant figure him out, you have to be an idiot to think rampage has a chance. Its becoming obvious to me, that muay thai and boxing is useless against machidas karate, itsa going to take the next generation of fighters, who have a base in Karate to even make it a competitive fight against machida. I dont see him losing a fight, or even a single round, for at least the next five years. ITS NOT EVEN FUNNY how advanced he is compared to slow ass dinosaurs like rampage, or any MUAY thai, or boxers in mma
by dtoto on May 26, 2009 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Rashad is quick and he has power. That doesn’t actually indicate that he has great stand up like Rampage. It just creates a dangerous situation for any fighter. Lyoto is extremely quick as well so that would cancel out Rashads speed. Which pretty much left Rashad with power and strategy. We all know that he didn’t come with the best strategy so that pretty much left him with power shots. Rashad did land a good kick and I do not see Rampage doing that. No man is unstoppable but Lyoto just brought a ton of clarity into the UFC light heavyweight division.
by RyanHobbs on May 26, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with Hardcase. I said this in an earlier thread, but it will take Rampage forgetting about the fans and putting Machida on his ass and pounding him to get the victory. Rashad is lighter on his feet than Rampage, but Rampage has much better technical boxing skills than Rashad. Rampage is much more dangerous on the feet than Rashad IMO. Anyways, someone who is quick is probably not the best match to beat Machida. You can’t play his game because he’s the best at it. You need a big, strong bully that can eat a shot getting inside, and that has devastating power. Rampage fits that bill. Will he beat Machida? I think so. Could Machida beat Page, sure. It’s going to take more than the shot that put Shad on queer street to beat him though. Rampage has that iron jaw and he will need it to get the victory. All of you saying that Rampage is slow, dumb and will get slaughtered are not thinking logically.
by Diceman on May 26, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions
Your strategy for Rampage is illogical. You can’t put someone on their ass if you can’t catch him. Its not just Machida’s “game” that makes him sick. Look at how the guy stands. There is nobody that has that posture in the cage, making it impossible to replicate him in training. GSP was a karate kingpin when he got in mma. He couldn’t help Rashad enough. “Eat a shot getting inside”, when has that ever happened to Machida? He doesn’t let people in. He is gone before they know it. Ask welter weights what the hardest thing about fighting GSP is. Quote John Fitch, “speed kills.” Machida has that speed. Rampage balloons up to 250 at times. That time was during the Ultimate Fighter, which he is doing again. Page doesn’t have explosive speed to stay with Machida. This dragon has no slayer peoples.
by Ti Odio on May 26, 2009 9:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Dice you are making too much sense. I will only add that the reason why a new style would ever be invented would be to solve a problem of another style. Machida’s style has been adapted well so far to MMA. I caution though that now we have seen it on display and it can be broken down and solved/countered. It is silly to believe that Machida syle is without weakness because it had to be adapted to the ring to begin with.
Machida is great and exciting as of late but he too will have a “l” in his loss column before it is all said and done. The odds are not in his favor in this area.
So the question could be, has Machida fought a boxer/wrestler of this calibur before? Or equally important still, are we to believe that Rampage is done learning anything new? I doubt Machida has fought anyone truly comparable to Page and I also think it is a reach to say that Page can’t learn anything new especially with what he and his team now has on footage.
by TheSaint on May 26, 2009 9:59 PM EDT up reply actions
With Rampages power he has a good chance, if he cuts the ring off and connects during an exchange.
by Jay on May 26, 2009 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Rashad is a poor mans Rampage. Rampage is gonna put an ass woopin on La cheetah. He is going to close the distance take some shots to his face and take them unlike Rashad and knock Machida out cold.
by jkfdjaldfkj on May 26, 2009 3:50 PM EDT up reply actions
If he uses the strategy that you just described, then he will get his ass kicked. His gameplan shouldn’t be “take some shots to his face” in hopes of landing his own. Thiago used that gameplan, and it didn’t work too well.

I wont be the least bit surprised to see Rampage beats Machida. On the other hand, I wont be surprised if Machida beats Rampage. THats why Its a MEGA fight and the best LHW title fight that the UFC has ever put together. I thing I am sure of his Rampage is capable of finishing machida, where as I only think Machida can out point Page to a win on the judges scorecards!

I think if Page connects he could KO Machida but thats a big IF.
I don’t see it happening.
Now if Page decides to use his wrestling / GNP , I see it that as a more effective tool to beating Machida.
Machida will beat Page by wearing him down and tiring him out. I see alot of leg kicks in Page’s future and it ain’t gonna be pretty.
Only guys capable of beating Machida are Shogun and A. Silva.

Rashad is much faster than Rampage, and Rashad never got close to Machida. Rampage is going to look like Mr. T in Rocky III, during the second fight after Rocky trained on his speed and footwork with Apollo. T couldn’t touch Rocky and got KTFO when he got tired chasing him around.

I know Lyoto is really illusive but I think Rampage has a chance if he just rushes in Lyoto wont be able to avoid a shot and rampage has ko power in both hands and rampage has a great chin I give him a chance as long as he doesnt just stand there and let machida dictate the fight like Evans did.

Page could off a very big upset probably by a KO in the 1st. Only because to me Machida’s stance is sort of similar to Chucks. The only thing is that Lyoto keeps his head too far back for any to come close to connecting with. But still I dont care who the fuck wins just as long as someone wins by KO
by VaginaLuvr on May 26, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions
as bad as rampage looked against jardine’s unorthodox style i don’t see him figuring out machida in time to win this fight. all of rampages ko’s in the ufc have been against straight forward brawler style fighters, eastman, liddell, and wandy. i just don’t think wolfslair can get him where he needs to be. machida is not going to be coming straight ahead throwing slow punches, throwing a lead-block with his forehead. i just think his style will be too much for rampage to figure out the first time around.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 26, 2009 2:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I thought Liddell was a counter puncher not a “straight forward brawler.” Also not many people can knock Hendo out, even Anderson had to choke him out.

why shogun? rampage is way stronger and has better knock out power, shogun and machida would cancel each others subs out and shogun would probably get ko’d

OJR- Wait first you say that Page should take him down and GnP Machida but then you say that Shogun (another stand up guy) who also doesn’t have “fast hands” and is slower than Page can beat Machida. Are you saying that Machida couldn’t tire out Shogun as well?! Based off what I have witness thus far, it would appear to me that Shogun is mostly likely to get gassed than Rampage. Rampage went 5 with both Dan and Forrest.
by TheSaint on May 26, 2009 10:27 PM EDT up reply actions
Are you kidding me? Rampage moves in straight lines and is way to one dimensional to do anything to Machida. He barely beat Jardine! I’d say Machida by KTFO in the first or second. On a side note, Rampage is a bit of dick. The way he treats this reporter reflects his personality. He is a class-less thug.

by TheSaint on May 26, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Could Rampage catch Machida and turn out his lights? Absolutely!! That said, I see Machida as a solid favorite in this fight. Keep this in mind…just because we haven’t seen Machida in a close quarters brawl, or fighting off his back does not mean he’s incapable of doing these things. Machida keeps showing more facets of his game, but we’ve yet to see all of it because he hasn’t needed it. Rampage will have a strength and power advantage, but the gap is not as big as most think.
by CL on May 26, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions
CL to work off of your logic, just because we havent seen Page shoot for a take down doesn’t mean he’s incapable of doing it or just because we haven’t seen Page check a leg kick doesn’t mean he is incapable of doing it. Question: How do we know we have seen every asset of Page’s game? Is Page doing exactly the same things he was doing in Pride?
Page’s advantages doesn’t SOLELY rely on strength and power but instead you have to add toughness and solid punch defense technique to his arsenal. Page will not be an easy out for Machida. This fight will deliver!

machida throws kicks from his lead foot, he can land them before rampage can react, not like muay thai where you wind up, did you see rashad afraid to kick machida because he knew he would get countered instantly. If rampage reacts and throws a punch, machidas allready back on his stance will counter rampage since he left himself open and hurt him badly. Machida is now training to finish agressively evry little mistake opponent makes,.its going to be funny seeing him make rampage look in slow mo. machida by totall destruction

I like where you are going with that dtoto however who says rampage has to punch, who say he can’t shoot for a single leg. Page comes off dumb but he is no chump.
Also, if it is true that Machida is training to finish aggressively then that means he can and will be countered.
Machida wins this fight if he stays ellusive, he would win on points which is what most Karate tourneys are about, points.
Page wins this fight if Machida gets too aggressive and gets countered or if Page takes him down.
I think alot of people are underestimating Page. He will be ready to fight and so will Machida and thats why I love this sport.

TUF has run its course. It was instrumental in bringing MMA and UFC to the mainstream, but it’s bringing in fighters of lower and lower quality each season, and it’s holding up title fights. LMAO that was hilarious. Now about this fight, which I completely agree with John, will be the best LHW title fight in UFC history and definitely the most anticipated.
The thing is, like John said the only way Lyoto can beat Rampage is by decision. Now, that is a very distinct possibility of course, but Rampage can win by KO, TKO, or decision as well.
A lot of you are saying Rampage is Rashad but slower and you are very sorely mistaken. So wrong in fact, that I won’t waste my breath anymore trying to tell you why, you’ll have to figure it out on your own. Or don’t, I don’t really care…
Right now, this fight is 50-50 to me. Until I see what happens with when the fight gets scheduled and how Rampage is physically and mentally headed in I won’t make a call. Rampage will get the UFC light heavyweight title back. He possesses the combination that is Lyoto’s cryptonite. His ability to take punishment is by far the best of any LHW. His fight ending power in both hands spells trouble for any opponent, in the blink of an eye. His very durable chin has been tested time and time again, and anyone that exchanges with him now, leaves themselves open to some of the nastiest counter hooks in the game, from either hand. Not to mention his phenomenal wrestling and slams, which can turn the tide of a fight. Don’t even get me started on his ground and pound, which makes Rampage even more dangerous when he is hungry to get the title back!
Machida won’t be able to end the fight, but he will get a rude awakening when Rampage comes in and blows him out of the water.
By the end of the 2009 year, Rampage will be Champ again.

Given Machida’s stance, a good attack may be to kick his front leg and take his base away. That is assuming that you don’t get pummeled by Machida’s fast reflexes and his other three limbs when you attempt the kick. That being said, I would doubt Rampage chooses this route since he hardly ever throws a kick.
Good luck Rampage and the LHW division. You’re gonna need it.

Not a chance eddie, and how can you know what machidas cryptonite is when he’s destroyed everyone he’s fought. I wasn’t 100% sure about machida before the rashad fight but i am now and i can’t see rampage getting anywhere near close enough to be able to pull off any of what you’ve mentioned above!
by ukmma on May 26, 2009 1:58 PM EDT reply actions
ukmma, you make a good point. But I don’t think Lyoto can take a hit, not to mention a powershot by Rampage. All that elusiveness goes out of the window after one mistake, which Lyoto will have no choice but to do, when his punches and kicks don’t phase Rampage enough to finish the fight. Not to mention Rampage will have a better game plan then stand there and do nothing like Rashad did.
Rampage will eat a few to land a bomb on Machida, and Machida will be amazed at the punishment Rampage will take.
Machida has never faced an opponent that is as skilled as Rampage and can take a WHOLE LOT OF DAMN PUNISHMENT. Not to mention that Rampage at the top of his game, can beat anyone in the light heavies, and he will prove it against Machida.
All jokes aside, Rampage is a humorous individual, but when those two are locked in the cage, Rampage’s defense and takedown ability will play a deciding factor. It is hard to be elusive when you are being slammed on you head. LOL.
Machida is going to face the most dangerous Rampage to date!

Whether Rampage can beat Machida or not, I dont know.
If he uses his strength and knockout power to maul him, maybe. La Cheetah cant be getting into any of those fisticuffs he got into with Rashad at the end of the fight in a Rampage fight. Because Page would knock him out. That said, I could see Le Cheetah just picking his legs apart and not letting Page getting anywhere near him.
But whatever happens, I love Rampage. What a character! War Rampage!
by UK_Chris on May 26, 2009 2:09 PM EDT reply actions
Rampage is too predictable to put any leather on Machida. He’s got a solid chin, yes, but he’s also been brutally KO’d before.
Only Rua at his absolute best (which we may or may not ever see again) can even challenge Machida right now, unless Anderson Silva decides to fight him, which he says he won’t.
It’s the Machida era. He will dominate like AS for a good long while until people study his style long enough to do something about it. It’s gonna require someone who can take him down and really test his BJJ. The fact that Tito “almost” got off a triangle would suggest that there’s a way to beat him there.
But no one is taking him out standing.

He’s not the sharpest knife in the drawer the guy introduces himself, and rampage doesn’t know his name…..lol. Machida will fustrate the hell out of rampage, and I predict either a very one sided beatdown UD for machida or a tko.
by nathan on May 26, 2009 2:22 PM EDT reply actions
Jackson has the proverbial puncher’s chance, but he will get beat to the punch time and again. Machida’s straight punches have less distance to travel and are at least as fast as Rampage’s hooks.

machida wannabes.rampage will knock machida out
by hhddavidson on May 26, 2009 2:51 PM EDT reply actions
Rampage is gonna get get his ass whopped by “La Cheetah” and he doesn’t even know yet. I’m expecting Lyoto to go “Wanderley Silva” on his ass.
by TKO Punches on May 26, 2009 2:54 PM EDT reply actions
That is going to be hard to do when Machida tries to open up like Wanderlei and he finds himself being woke up by the ref. I hope Machida tries that shit, just to see him get his lights turned out by a legend. Not to mention that Rampage is still relatively young and will have enough in the gas tank to unload bomb after bomb on la Cheetah.
You guys get ready for the track meat yall, because La Cheetah is going to be running the 100 meter dash everytime Rampage comes in after he gets a little taste of what real power is.
I am telling you guys, elusiveness goes out the window when you get hit in the face. LOL.

by hhddavidson on May 26, 2009 2:59 PM EDT reply actions
Are you guys who have noted Rampages “amazing” ability to take punishment, taking this a little too far? I remember a fight where he was left dangling outside the ropes by a much less talented fighter than Machida.
The “Bull Rush” theory for defeating Loyota has landed two people a quick trip to Lala land…what makes you think Rampage will be any differnt if he tries it? And if you don’t think Machida can take a punch, watch him shrug off 3 or 4 solid blows from Rashad last fight…it just pissed him off..
by jdare77 on May 26, 2009 3:04 PM EDT reply actions
Let’s be honest. The matchup is good for MAchida. However, if Rampage insists on standing up, there is no way he wins this fight. What he needs to do is try to take Machida down and work his GnP. Machida is a very difficult guy to hit and since he is a master a timing his opponents, he will eventually time Rampage and hit him a lot. Rashad has KO power in his right hand but he landed 1 punch in the whole fight. Also, it doesn’t help Rampage that he leaves that front leg so out there and doesn’t check kicks. Machida will pick that leg apart. The only way I see Rampage winning this one is taking Machida down and putting pressure on him. Other than that, the matchup favors Machida.
by TKO Punches on May 26, 2009 3:06 PM EDT reply actions
Its going to take a guy with severe talent to beat Lyoto, not a guy like Page who is just more just a big strong guy that can take a shot and throw punches!!!! Machida wins this easily, standup guys wont fair well against him because he is to elusive and skilled for most + his strikiing is ridiculously accurate. Your best bet is to lay and pray (if you can get him down) or try to sub him mind you he does have a BB in JJ so thats not easy either. He is the best fighter/MMA guy we have seen in a long time, I cant wait to watch him fight again!!!!!!
by Spyder on May 26, 2009 3:08 PM EDT reply actions
Machida is awesome! he has a great style and I see him being champ for a long time, with that being said I cant stand Machida I hope he loses to Rampage in there fight, but again I dont see that happening, also I love how all the fake a$$, bandwagen jumpin, wannabees are all big Machida fans now!
by jet99 on May 26, 2009 3:11 PM EDT reply actions
OMG Rampage knocked out Chuck and W. Silva so he is gonna knock out Machida rofl. Machida is better than both of them, Rampage couldn’t knock out Jardine or Forrest and Machida is better than both of them. But I guess I’m just being bias since I loathe Rampage
by rydinlow on May 26, 2009 3:27 PM EDT reply actions
YES, Rampage Does have KO power and boxing skills, But he looks very hestitant to exchange. Look at his fight with Jardine and Forrest he basically just followed them throughout the whole fight faking a jab or two and wait for right time to throw the right over hand. It never happened. Rampage is going to lose if he fights the same way. Thats why i give Shogun the best chance to win against Machida pending that he is 100 percent if course, because Shogun changed his fighting styles throughout the fight. look how quickly we went from Liddels back to trying a knee bar.
by danny_c on May 26, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions
Rampage wins by KO or loses and has a nervous breakdown and terrorizes an LA. expressway.
by mikehunt on May 26, 2009 5:55 PM EDT reply actions
I can not wait for the Rampage v Machida fight … it will be interesting to see Rampage go back to his wrestling roots … as Rashad should have done.
by DownUnder on May 26, 2009 6:18 PM EDT reply actions
Rampage is gonna knock La Cheetah’s head in to the 5th row.Just wait and see.Machida will be coming in for one of his tactical and flawless and elusive strikes…lol…(sorry couldnt help but to laugh at that part) then BAMMMM! Machida hit the mat sleeping Wandy style.cover, cover, hook Rampage is champ.Bank on it

A little bit off topic, but what do you guys think of a hendo vs. machida matchup? Hendo will take machida down at some point and his clinch could be the difference.
by RT on May 26, 2009 6:46 PM EDT reply actions
just look at A.silva vs hendo and see what MAchida would do!
hope dan beats bisping tho! would love to see Dan vs Silva 2!
by Randy for Couture on May 26, 2009 6:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I was thinking the same thing, but the muay thai style Anderson brings is much different than the karate style machida presents. Just a thought considering the talk of Machida being “unbeatable” lol. And dan will beat bisping and get the next mw title shot.
by RT on May 26, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Very lopsided fight Rampage will KO/TKO Machida in the first. Machida wont be able to strafe away.
by Khaos_Warrior on May 26, 2009 8:10 PM EDT reply actions
LOL…I don’t know who will win. 205 is just too damn close. Like Greg Jackson said any fighter has the ability to win a fight. But I do know one thing for sure…Rampage is F’N halarious!! Damn that man makes me laugh.

Rampage is an idiot. He can call Machida what ever he wants untill they get in the octagon, but after they fight he’ll still be calling him champ…….“YA FEEL ME”!!?!!! What a maroon!LOL.
by GoF*@kYourslf on May 27, 2009 3:44 AM EDT reply actions
If you have the belt you cant turn down fights, Rampage trying to sound all bad ass, Rashad would have won any way, i hope Machida ko"s this fool. Rampage has turned into such a dick, he use to be so likeable now hes a joke.
by thebending on May 27, 2009 5:08 PM EDT reply actions
Page is going to lose, barring a lucky punch, his only chance, less than 5%.
by nathan on May 27, 2009 6:30 PM EDT reply actions
I think Jackson is a higher caliber fighter than Evans, so it won’t be as easy of a fighter, but it’s still a good indicator.
If Griffin could come up with a technical game plan to beat Rampage, just imagine what Machida could do.
Also, if you think Rampage can beat Machida on the ground, then think again! The only way Rampage will be winning is with solid and quick standup plus some luck!!
Rampage is not to be underestimated, and will likely do better than Evans, but in the end Machida will come out the winner again, IMO.
I’m not on the ‘Machida Bandwagon’, I’ve been saying this guy will be doing some impressive things for a long time now. The only thing left is to watch him actually do it. The Machida era will be lasting a long time now.
by JS on May 27, 2009 6:54 PM EDT reply actions
Look…“Rampage” does have a stiff right hook don get me wrong…but he is a very PREDICTABLE fighter. He looks and IS tough as nails fo sho…but he is hardly trained by team Jackson. Evans gifted already and trained by world renown Team Jackson trained HARD with Top Teir fighters GSP and UNPREDICTABLE Keith Jardine and STLL got laid out….and FAIRLY EASY. To think that Jackson has a MUCH better chance at beating Machida is friggin HILLARIOUS! All of you people who want a thug for a champion will be heart broken. Sorry.. Machida hasnt lost a round a fight nor has anyone ever drew blood from him. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Rampage is good but he is no top tier fighter like Machida, Fedor, GSP OR A. Silva
Don’t get me wrong Page LOVES to fight and trains pretty hard but he is to scatterbrained to have even a chance at a more centered more mindful fighter in Lyoto “The DRAGON” Machida.
Machida by EASY K.O. at 2:45 in the First Round.
by KING! on May 28, 2009 9:22 PM EDT reply actions
rampage needs to take away machidas best asset his explosive unpredictable striking, rampage has great skills in the clinch were he can nullify machidas use of space and timing. From the clinch he can try to bully machida and control him maybe take him down and ruff him up test his chin a bit. It wont be easycoz machida is a sick wrestler, but thats his only chance rashad lost coz he played machidas game. rampage is the fuckin man I hope he fucks him up!!!
