Dream 9 results and recap: Canseco crushed, 'Kid' upset and championship controversy

DREAM 9, which featured the promotion’s featherweight grand prix and "Super Hulk" tournaments, as well as a middleweight title match, took place earlier this morning (Tuesday, May 26) from the Yokohama Arena in Yokohama, Japan.

If you missed it you’ll be able to catch the replay on HDNet this Friday, May 29 at 10 p.m. ET.

First up was the opening round of DREAM’s open weight tournament billed as the "Super Hulk" tournament, which featured eight fighters of varying size and ability ... or lack thereof.

To kick off the show would be Japanese fan favourite Ikuhisa Minowa. He was charged with the task of knocking of the modern day Goliath, Bob Sapp, which he did by locking in an achilles lock that forced "The Beast" to tap.

Former baseball slugger Jose "Can"seco has a similar assignment against 7’ 2" gargantuan Hong Man Choi; however, he experienced a very different result, getting quickly trounced in his mixed martial arts debut via strikes. Hopefully, that’s the last we have to see of him in a ring ever again -- he’s quite made out for this fighting stuff to say the least.

Star-divide

UFC washout Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou was able to get back to his wining ways, but was be considerably outsized in his attempt to do so when he clashes with 6’ 11", 330-pound Jan "The Giant" Nortje.

Despite that he was able to take "The Giant" down and pound on him furiously, which the referee had to intervene; however, Sokoudjou continued the onslaught in a moment of depravity, which lad to both corners storming the ring. The good news is that cooler heads eventually prevailed.

Gegard Mousasi, who vacated his DREAM middleweight title recently because he desired a move to light heavyweight, faced off against dangerous kickboxer Mark Hunt. He took his much larger counterpart to the mat quickly where he would go to work for a kimura straight away, eventually getting it and forcing "Super Samoan" to tap.

In non-tournament action Japanese mainstay Tatsuya "Crusher" Kawajiri was able to outmuscle highly regarded lightweight standout Gesias "JZ" Calvancante en route to a unanimous decision victory.

Now it was time to get underway the quarterfinals of the featherweight grand prix.

Crowd favourite and underdog Hideo Tokoro pulled off a superb win in a great all out scrap against Abel Cullum. He defeated the BJJ expert at his own game by submitting him with a rear naked choke late into the fight.

Hiroyuki Takaya was able to upset Yoshiro Maeda in their quarterfinal bout by catching him off-guard with an overhand right to the face and continuing the punishment on the floor, forcing the referee to jump in and save Maeda late into the first round.

Jiu-jitsu ace Bibiano Fernandes advanced to the semifinal stages by garnering a decision.

And of course the event boasted the long awaited return of 139-pound superstar, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto. However, Greco-roman wrestling stud Joe Warren would ruin the party and certainly proved his worth by bullying "Kid" for the duration of the bout, going on to earn a hard fought decision victory.

Truly shocking.

Especially because this was only Warren’s second professional mixed martial arts bout. Even though he still has a ton of work to do to make himself more well rounded, this is an enormous feather in his cap -- his superb strong wrestling base has served him well so far and looks to continue to do so.

The event had been a thrilling series of affairs that unfortunately was marred with a poor ending. The main event of the evening -- a bout for the vacant DREAM middleweight title between grappling phenom Ronaldo "Jacare" Souza and charismatic Jason "Mayhem" Miller -- had to be halted early because of an errant blow from Miller to a downed Souza.

The strike carved a deep laceration to Souza’s head, which forced ringside officials to call off the match prematurely because of the severity of the cut. The fight was ruled a no contest. It was certainly a disappointing end to an otherwise stellar event.

Perhaps "Jacare" and "Mayhem" can reschedule and throw down once more for a more decisive result.

Here are the official results for DREAM 9:

"Super Hulk" Open weight quarterfinals:
Ikuhisa Minowa (42-30) defeated Bob Sapp (10-4-1) by achilles lock (1:16-R1)
Rameau Thierry Sokoudjou (6-4) defeated Jan Nortje (2-6) by TKO (Strikes) (1:18-R1)
Gegard Mousasi (25-2-1) defeated Mark Hunt (5-6) by kimura (2:28-R1)
Hong Man Choi (2-2) defeated Jose Canseco (0-1) by TKO (Strikes) (1:20-R1)

Featherweight grand prix quarterfinals:
Hideo Tokoro (22-16-1) defeated Abel Cullum (14-3) by rear-naked choke (1:37-R2)
Hiroyuki Takaya (11-6-1) defeated Yoshiro Maeda (24-7-2) by TKO (Strikes) (9:39-R1)
Bibiano Fernandes (5-2) defeated Masakazu Imanari (16-7-1) via unanimous decision
Joe Warren (2-0) defeated Norifumi Yamamoto (17-2) via split decision

DREAM middleweight title:
Ronaldo Souza (10-2) fought Jason Miller (22-6) to a no-contest

Non-tournament bout:
Tatsuya Kawajiri (24-5-2) defeated Gesias Calvancante (14-3-1) via unanimous decision

wow. We were picking on Joe Warren at the last DREAM. No one saying anything now. Maybe this will get Kid to the WEC sooner.

Told you guys about Mousasi. Gonna take it all. Hunt never had a chance.

I missed alot of the event. Stayed up till 3am to catch it, then it was like, "Actually its 2am PACIFIC time, so its really 5am Est. I was pissed. Missed all the Super Hulk matches and JZ/Crusher fight.

NNR, Bibiano fight was bad. He fought intelligently, but fought scared.

I had the same impression!I thought it was legal!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 26, 2009 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Calm down Cesar, KNEES to the head are legal to a downed opponent. THAT is what he was going for.

Kev, I’m with you on the “3 fights left thing”. I watched this morning up until I had to go to work, and just watched the Fernandez/Imanari fight on just now on lunch.

I was hyping Joe Warren after the last Dream event, but then he got matched up with Kid. Joe Warren (especially against Beebe when he was striking more) looks just like a young, aggressive Dan Henderson, like how Dan used to fight. Their stances are identical, and I love Joe Warren’s attitude. Even after watching the fight, I said to my wife (who got home just in time for the Mayhem fight) “Warren just won that fight and beat a legend, but the judges are going to screw him”. As soon as the 2nd judge was for Kid, I thought it was a given, But the 3rd judge did it right!

Mad props to Joe Warren – way to take the MMA world BY STORM!!!!!!!

JOHN, I haven’t been around that much lately, but try to close to events and such and we rarely seem to be on on the same day…

I have noticed a trend and have one question for you my friend = DO YOU STILL WATCH MMA????

Every thread I remember going to, you seem to have missed the event. HDnet at 5am is understandable (if you don’t get the channel in your area), but c’mon man, you’re slacking!!!

by ViolentMike on May 26, 2009 3:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I really am slacking VM. I am about to graduate so I have a crap load of work and then on top of that, Im trying to party as much as possible and enjoy what little time left I have of college night. So I rarely get to see fights live anymore. Im stuck with the dVR, or watching replays online.

Sucks bro….I know. Im also single now, so Im always going out weds-Sunday. When you got a girl, you can just stay in and order a ppv on a saturday night. Being single, you are just a dog that wants “new ass” every single weekend, so I tend to go out a lot more.

Basically, Im a nerd during the day, and I drunken mess of a party animal at night. Soon I will be back to normal buddy!

pretty good event so far.
I was surprised Canseco landed a punch, rumor has it he made 6 figures.
I know moussassi is good, but Mark Hunt is a shell of himself since getting KO’d.
Fuck Sokujoe! I was never a fan, he sucks and has no cardio, now he hits guys 7 times after the fight was stopped…classless and inexcusable!!
here’s a link for you guys!

wow, this first fight for the featherweights is unreal! That was one of the best rounds of the year. It had everything, transitions, submission attempts and reversals! WOW, can’t wait for round 2…

The entire SuperHulk tournament was a freakin joke. Canseco is a fool. Sapp blows. Always has. Always will. Hunt sucks. Sokoudjou is a douche.

miller vs jacera no contest due to a accidental kick /cut

by $Curt$ on May 26, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

what? r u kidding me? what happened man?

by john on May 26, 2009 9:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If it was accidental why did they yellow card Mayhem? Only reason it was a NC was cause there wasnt enough time too render a deciscion ..

It was for sure illegal.

who was winning the title fight?

Wow that ending sucked. Thanks Kevin for the link I was looking forward to that fight and it ends like that, damn.

by Bryan on May 26, 2009 9:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Awesome event with only two exceptions: Jacare/Miller No Contest and the Imanari fight, he looked more lost than Paulo Filho in the rematch with Sonnen.

Other than that, awesome. I did not think Warren would come out that strong to pull out the upset. The long time off for Kid really showed.

IMO:
Fight of the night: Tokoro vs Cullum, hands down.
Submission of the night: Tokoro
KO of the night: Takaya (TKO counts doesn’t it?)

by Belisarius on May 26, 2009 9:36 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

how Minowa sub Bob Sapp so quickly when it took Nogueira forever to sub him in their fight. Sapp damn near killed Nog before he was able to pull out the submission

by deuce 4 on May 26, 2009 9:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sapp has always been suspect to leg locks. Minowa was a terrible match up for sapp!

by john on May 26, 2009 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A couple of shockers here, can’t believe JZ and Kid both lost. I don’t know where Kid goes from here, suddenly a Faber-Kid dream fight has lost a little luster. It would still be an awesome fight but like Chuck-Wandy if it ever happens it will be once they’re both passed their prime.

The super hulk thing was one of the silliest things I’ve ever seen. Sapp is a joke on the ground and I wouldn’t be suprised if he pulls out of the Lashley fight now. Soko behaved disgracefully, I honestly can’t stand Houston 2.0 he’s overrated and a thug, hopefully Mousasi or Minowa will submit him in that later rounds. The Canseco fight was the most pathetic thing that I’ve ever seen, he had no business being in the ring.

The only saving grace of this tournament is Mousasi, this guy is for real and should really be in a more competetive tournament rather than this freak show because it’s a waste of his skills. Gegard should have this tournament in the bag, he looked great (in the only proper match-up) against Hunt and I don’t see any of the other guys giving him any problems in striking or grappling.

by David W-S on May 26, 2009 10:52 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i hate kid but hasn’t it been quite awhile since he last fought? maybe he had a little ring rust and was coming off an injury to fast

by randy murders on May 26, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s been ages since his last fight but to lose to a one dimensional wrestler in his second fight is not good by any means. This tournament was practically made for Kid to win so this was a bit of a disaster for him.

by David W-S on May 26, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thank god for TIVO because I was not getting up to watch this card. Mousasi is going to walk through that freakshow tournament with ease. No one is even going to be able to compete with him. If he is really fighting Vitor at Affliction 3 that is going to be unreal.

I really thought Warren was going to get robbed of the victory by the Japanese judges because if you listen to what the announcers say, the Japanese officials frown upon take downs unless you are going for the big slam/finish. (FYI the announcers are god awful – at one point they said the action was too quick and they shouldn’t talk anymore). When they stood Warren/Kid up in the first round after Joe was doing considerable damage, I couldn’t help but think about what Rampage said about Japanese referees who help out the home favorites (ala Rampage v Wandi 1). Glad he won and hope they bring both these guys into the WEC.

Was looking forward to Souza beating up Miller and sending him back into retirement so he can just talk about how GSP greased against him even though he doesn’t deserve to be in the ring with GSP and only commented because of his relationship with BJ Penn.
