i can honestly say now, that im a big fan of lyoto machida and that i appreciate his skill set. before i felt he was boring but when you think about how he sets everything up, its just unreal. tough loss for rashad but hell be back, its either him or rampage thats #2 after machida(where i think rampage will kick rashads ass)

well yeah thats part of it, to use his elusiveness to set up powerful strikes shows what a skilled mma fighter he is. i just took longer to appreciate that

I think in the case of Machida, it is not that hard to see someone change their opinion of him as a fighter, mostly because I think Machida has changed quite a bit in the way he fights over the past one and a half years. His first few fights in the UFC were not very exciting, and 4 straight went to a decision against lesser known fighters. Then when he fought Soko, who was still considered a huge threat at the time, he was more aggressive with his striking, and was able to get a submission. Next was the Tito fight, which may have went the distance, but it was still an exciting fight. Since then he has had 2 stunning KO’s. That is a huge improvement in performance over much better competition.

Personally, I never disliked him, but I wasn’t what I would call a fan until he was going into the Tito fight.

I have always been a fan of Machida since I saw him Ko franklin in Japan. Now he has easily become one of my favorite fighters.
You guys like his new found finishing abilities…I knew that would come once he found his comfort level in the Oactagon.

Lyoto has had brilliant finishes over tHiago and Rashad, but to me, his most exciting fight was the Tito fight. That was one of the greatest performances I have ever seen!

I swear that Machida reminds me of a bigger version of Bruce Lee!

i’ve been a fan of machida since the heath fight but i never expected him to get this good and finish fights like he does now… its so impressive

i think he will destroy rampage…. rampage doesnt move about a lot so i think he’ll pick page apart

Can everyone stop with this “you’re not a real fan” crap! Maybe it took Saturday’s performance for people to see past the “he’s a boring fighter” assumption.

As per many comments on this site, unless you have spectacular finishes, nobody is interested in you which I personally don’t agree with. It’s pretty obvious there’s more than one way to get the job done.

Now lets get back to MMA talk.

Well Folks! Happy to see so many people jumping on the Machida war wagon. Problem now is that all his new fans wont get to see him fight till the end of the year UFC event. TUF starts filming on June 1st. season takes about 6 months to air. so we wont get to see Machida vs. Rampage until the end of the year December ppv event.

IMO, Machida vs. Rampage is the biggest and best title fight that has ever happened in the uFC lhw division. Tito vs. Liddell was huge at the time, but IMO they werent the top 2 LHW at the time. Best 205 lbers were in Pride in those days. Machida vs. Rampage really puts the 2 best lhw on earth against each other and I cant FOCKING wait to see it!

I love how no matter how much bad blood there is between 2 UFC fighters, after they fight, the beef is always Squashed! Imo that is the best part of our sport. it shows how classy our athletes are. I am a big Serra fan, and I hate Hughes…but I am happy to see the beef squashed. Regretfully I still havent watched the Hughes vs. Serra fight……I will comment on it a little later after I watch it!

at times I bash Dana, but I always really like how he comes off during the post fight press conferences! Classic Dana: “Tito’s new movie is coming out”….LOL LMAO!!!

They shouldnt have even wasted a question on Chael Sonnen! DOUCHEBAG had the audacity to say that him and Anderson were the 2 best middleweights in the world. What an idiot. I would have loved to see the entire post conference take place without anyone asking him any questions. I still havent watched the Chael/Miller fight…Now that I know Chael won, I probably wont be watching it since all his wins SUCK!!!!

I cant believe how much you guys under rate Rampage! I have no idea who will win this fight, but I do know that its going to be a very hard fought fight, and the winner will not walk out of the Octagon unscathed!

your dreaming, compared to rashad, rampage has super slow hands, and reflexes is flat footed, no kicking game, or defense, no grappling, just a slow flatfooted boxer who comes straight ahead, not even laterall movement. rashad is 10x the athlete of rampage. rampage couldnt even beat forrest, which took rashad only a few rounds to do. your seriously on crack if you think rampage will win a single round, or land a single blow against machida

by dtoto on May 25, 2009 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No one is under rating Rampage, we all know how good he “can” be. BUT and that’s a big but, Machida lives for fighters like Rampage’s fighting style.

by UFC Champ on May 25, 2009 10:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Couldn’t have said it better myself. I would also have given Rampage less chance of beating Machida than Rashad. Rashad would have been a lot more of an unpredictable opponent for Machida than Rampage. Page never really changes his fighting style, his style looks taylor made for Machida. Some fans need to look at things logically and not just say a fighter is going to win just because it happens to be their favorite fighter.

by Ade on May 25, 2009 10:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh sweet god dtoto u are talking shite -

Rampage has no defence???? his striking defense is probably the top of the division hes very technical in his blocking using his shoulders and elbows extemely well to stop blows to the head. plu she probably has the best chin in MMA!

hes slow??? maybe u should ask chuck or wandy if they seen his dynamite powerful hooks coming!

no grappling??? hes a fantastic wrestler. strongest in the division – he out wrestled dan henderson and even in the clinch – dan’s (greco roman) forte. and when was the last time u seen Page get subbed – probably never because hes only got subbed by the legendary sakuraba when Page was brought in to lose. he never even leave shimself open for a submission cus hes too strong and too much of a good grappler. just cus u aint a black belt in bjj dont mean u aint a top grappler.

u clearly dont know what you are talking about or have even watched a rampage fight because if u did then u wouldnt have saif those things…

he may not beat Machida but he will def have a great shot at it. his problems lie in his movement on the feet at times and his lack of utilising leg kicks and defending them. also hes a very confidence relying and mental fighter. Forrest eeked a decision (could have gone either way proably to Page) due to Rampages preparation coaching problems and mental health! bar this everything else is extremely good about his game and when he come sin physically and mentally prepared hes a tough tough man to beat!

by Randy for Couture on May 25, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

nice video Alpha hahaha!
Rampage has the best boxing defense in the division and is a much cleaner counterpuncher than Rashad is..
He obviously has another mindset cause he’s a different person, Rashad was far to tentative in this fight it looked like he didn’t believe in himself at all.. Rampage is bigger and physically stronger, he is also a wayy more effective wrestler! Do not forget about his experience either he’s one of the most experienced guys in the UFC, the dude that can’t see all of his skills must be blind!

by RoB on May 25, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

U guys are dumb! Stop drinking the UFC cool aid about Rashad. Rampage would absolutely DESTROY RASHAD! it wouldnt even be close. Rampage has a much better chance against Machida then Rashad did, and I felt that way even before Machida destroyed Shad.

I actually think that Rampage might even be a slight favorite, when it comes to betting.

If Machida and Rampage fought 7 times, best of 7 fight series, it would probably take go to Game 7, meaning that the 7th fight would be the deciding factor. Dont know who would win game 7 between the 2, but I do know that both are capable of beating each other. Its just depends on who is “ON” on the night they fight!

2 months ago, only a handful of us liked, and defended Machida….Now 90% of this site is picking him to completely DOMINATE Rampage! LMAO, you guys are so nuts! Bandwagon FOCKERS!

i’m not underrating him but machida is a class above every1 else in the LHW division which is something

i think rampage can beat everyone apart from machida a bit like franklin can in the MW division

by ufcaddict on May 25, 2009 11:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

your crazy if think rampage would destroy rashad.Rampage is a one dimensional, flatfooted fighter, with no lateral movement, no leg kicks, or defense against them. His hands, reflexes, and timing are way slower than rashads. the only thing he has is more punching power, and tighter boxing.boxing, and muay thai are useless against machidas karate. He sits so far back and even bends backwards you cant touch him with a kick or punch. In the meantime he can kick without winding up, and dart in and out and inflict damage. rampage is a dinosaur, its going to take a new generation of mma fighter to compete with machida, and thats a long way in the future, maybe 10 yrs. With his kartate style i would pick him over any muay thai, boxer, wresting based fighter, even if he was 60 yrs old, that how far ahead of the game he is. I predicted before the fight, rashad wouldnt win a single round, it would be a complete mismatch, and once he holds the title he will defend for at least the next 5 yrs witghout even losing a single round, call me crazy, but anyone who fights him is lost, they cant take him down, since he has such a good base from sumo, is an incredible bjj practioner, and just all around ground game, which means they have to deal with him standing. when anderson silva says that during sparring, lyoto basically schools him, and makes him look foolish also, that is shocking. keep dreaming if you think page will land even a single punch.

by dtoto on May 25, 2009 11:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well I was pretty depressed this weekend after watching Machida brutalize Rashad. I give mad props to Machida…he looked incredible. He was fast and his accuracy was unbelievable. Props to Rashad for taking a lot of shots…the guy has a serious chin and most fighters would have crumbled way before that. I think it’s good for Rashad to get his first loss out of the way and it’s no shame that it came at the hands of someone like Machida. I think the big lesson for Rashad here is that he can’t always let his opponents take rounds at the start of a fight. It has worked well against Chuck and Forrest but it wasn’t a smart strategy for this fight. I said that it was key for Rashad to establish himself early and win the first round at least. I hope he comes back stronger than ever.

After watching that severe beatdown I really don’t see who in the division can beat Machida. I’m sorry to all the Rampage fans but I don’t see any way that Rampage wins that fight. I think the biggest difference between Rashad and Rampage is Rampage has good boxing defense but Machida will get him with the kicks. Rampage is a flat footed boxer nowadays and I think he really needs to go back to his wrestling roots and get Machida on his back somehow but I just don’t see him being able to do that.

by Buster Bluth on May 25, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the only way to beat Machida is to antipicate his movements ahead of time and have the speed to capitalize. Rashad is way faster than Rampage, and he never came close to Machida. MMA is all about match-ups, and Machida is a terrible match-up for Rampage.

I PREDICTED before this fight, that it would be a totall mismatch, that machidas timing, footwork, reflexes, handspeed are on a completely different level than rashads from his 24 yrs of karate training, that it would be like someone fighting a LHW bruce lee with an incredible ground game, and that machida would not lose a fight, or even a round at least for the next five yrs once he becomes champion. people laughed, no one is laughing now. I also said that anderson silva said himself that during sparring lyoto, makes him look foolish, and even he cant touch machida, that should have been a wakeup call to anyone betting on rashad .

by dtoto on May 25, 2009 9:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I also said it was going to be a complete mismatch….and that the fight owuld show that Lyoto is on a completly different level then Rashad!

To me, Im still not sold on Rashad. Beating a washed up liddell, and losing the entire fight against forrest until TKO’ing him…does not impress me very muchHe is a great fighter…Top 5, but I dont think he can beat the elite like Machida, Rampage, and an in shape Shogun!

Mark my words: Next fight to be booked will be Evans vs. Shogun! Which will be Shogun’s UFC coming out party!

by john on May 25, 2009 10:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

john i think you will be sold on machida once he destroys rampage, then it will be time for you to wake up and face reality, which is that we are entering a new era of mma, its going to take a different generation of fighter, one that is still in grade school, to compete against machida, one that can bring the same level of karate, which machida has been perfecting for the last 24 yrs, that fighter is some kid right now that is 5 yrs old, and practicing karate. muay thai , boxing are useless agains this new style, and their has to be a great deal of despair, because evry LHW that watched that fight last night, know this. I have no doubt even if machida was 70 yrs old, and fought a rampage in his prime he would kick his ass. Machida might as well be fighting with a gun, pitting him against boxers, and muay thai champions

you said your not sold on rashad cause he beat up a washed up liddel. only 2 people page has knocked out are the same 2 washed up fighters liddel, and wandy, who have both lost like 5 out of their last 6 fights, its great to have favorites, but you need to think logically. page couldnt even finish forrest, which dint take long for rashad to do, or hendo who was destroyed quickly by the spider. if you think if they fought 7 times that page would win a single fight, or even a single round, you are obviously clueless. I think you will finally see the light in december, and you will believe

think logically? I think that’s the only thing john does, and he uses common sense.. Rampage finished Liddell faster than Rashad did if you wanna go there with your arguments, but the fact is that he’s better than Rashad and he wasn’t himself against Forrest…
If everything was just about speed/explositivity and movement than Usain Bolt and other 100 meter sprinters would be world class strikers… You have to have real fighting skills and technique which Rampage has more so than Rashad does!
The real truth is that RAshad became a “great” striker after he KO’d Liddell in everybody’s mind, the hype around his striking just blow through the roof!
In this fight he looked like he did against Tito only difference being that Machida is a much faster and better striker than Tito is so he made him pay..

THank u rob… I am not even going to respond to Home Boy,….1after all he started 2 post by saying “JOhn, you arent sold onm Machida…”. Not sold on Machida? I have been swinging from his nuts since guys like this dude have been calling him boring! U dont gotta tell me about Machida. I am fully aware of his skills!

All I know is that this site is infested with bandwagon fans! After a UFC ppv, fans start swinging from other fighters nuts. All u guys remember is the latest fight…mma doesnt work that way. THere is a certain thing called an “OFF night”….To bring up rampage’s performance against Forrest is simple nutthuggery and irrelevant. Anyone who has ever seen Page fight, knows that fight wasnt indicative of his skills! So why bring it up in your lame ass argument?

Fact is, before the THiago Silva fight, at least half of you guys were still picking against Machida, and Bashing him….6 months later, he is everyone’s favorite fighter…..lol, Fickle FOCKERS! lool

John, go scratch your ass. I was at the fight, though Machida was great and as a mma fan, he is a great champion for the sport. However, getting the sport to the next level- the mainstream fan has no idea who Anderson Silva is because US media will not give exposure to a champion who speaks broken English. It is just the way it is. So kindly, go f yourself.

I think Everyone is Forgetting that Potentially the only real 2 fighters that would give Machida a run for his money or beat him at 205 are Anderson Silva and Maurico Shogun.
Rampage could upset the odds in Beating Machida with his sheer power, boxing and ground skills, but this would only happen if he would take the fight to machida and close the distance.
I think Rashad fought a good fight and will only get better after this loss and will learn alot from this fight.
I can’t see anyone else challenging Machida at 205 other than Rampage, Silva or Shogun.
Unless they bring in someone from another organisation?
Any potential Fighters out there that could come to the UFC at 205 to make a real impact?

by Afro Thunder on May 25, 2009 7:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yOU MAY NOT KNOW THIS BUT ANDERSON silva would not give machida a run for his money, during sparring anderson has stated many times that machida schools him also, he said long ago the LHW title belongs to machida, if not for that he would destroy any LHW out there, watch what he does to forrest, yet he even he cant touch machida amazing to think how far advanced machida is from even anderson, who is miles ahead himself in the standup from anybody else. the person who is going to beat machida might not even be born yet, he has perfected that style since he was 3 yrs old, it would tAKE SOMEONE practicing that style of karate for at least 5-10 yrs to give him a competive fight. Its very easy for me to see machida not losing a fight or even a single round in the next 5-10 yrs

by dtoto on May 25, 2009 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rampage’s sheer power boxing and grond skills did not look that impressive against Forrest or Jardine. Why do you think they might work against an opponent who will be 10 x harder and more difficult to fight.

only chance rampage or anyone else has ob beating machida is to bring a gun to the octagon with them. I see rampage getting brutalized, same as anderson did to franklin. I have always liked Machida. He has the potential to be champ for a while. Lets just hope that UFC goes out of their way to promote him like they did when Forrest was champ.

Just after Dana put the belt around Machida, we all commented on Dana’s facial expression. It looked like he was thinking, "How the hell am I going to market this guy? Watch the fight agian, you’ll see exactly what I’m saying.

It’s very easy to market Lyoto….

He’s a Karate guy, he basically looks like Ryu from Street Fighter…

He kind of restores the old notion of martial arts and fighting… that a dedicated martial artist, a karate master no less, can actually win a real fight.

I can’t wait to see Lyoto (Ryoto) fight again. Everyone I know, even the casual UFC fans, has got Lyoto fever right now.

I’ve been a fan of Machida since I found out he is a Karate guy like I use to be and he choked out Sokoudju which was the first time I actually saw one of his fights. I see the only way Rampage can win is by catching Machida with one of his hooks, but with a guy like Machida that’s easier said than done.

Chael’s interview was the best….as well as his submission defense..

I think Manny Pacquiao can beat Machida by rear-naked-choke on 2nd round, Evans by omoplata on 1st round and Rampage on 1st round stoppage by a rapid foot-stomp. Go Manny! whooo hooo!!!
