Indeed. I have to give to Rashad though. He was rocked and tried like hell to recover, then that left hit him just right and shut him off completely. He took it really graciously too. I was impressed with that.

give it to him for what?
trying to save his life by fighting back?
wow, good job R, much props…
ever been in a fight? didnt think so

i agree dsmith!!
and some peeps around here have said rashad has no chin..
lol~ the man got his jaw tapped’ more than a couple times..
i have to give rashad props for staying aggressive while
he was clearly ‘out on his feet’…….
if thats not tough? i dont know what is~

Thanks Stinky. And lets not forget Evans got tagged quite a bit during the Liddell fight and didn’t get rocked. Everybody’s got a button but if you can take a punch from Chuck you’re on solid ground.
by DSmith on May 24, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree with Stink… Rashad took some heavy blows before finally going out. And, he got it back together enough to be interviewed afterward. He also paid props to Lyoto for the victory and blamed himself for the loss by saying he should have trained harder.
Tell me we can’t respect that.
by DJ on May 24, 2009 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Is he saying he didn’t respect Machida enough to train all out?
by PW on May 24, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions
No I think it was more of “no excuses, it’s all on me” type of thing.
by DSmith on May 24, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
He looks like a zombie from a George A. Romero movie in that picture.
by naturalshadow on May 25, 2009 2:26 AM EDT up reply actions
Yah props to him, and Ryan is retarded. 9/10 people getting rocked like that would go into a defensive position and then prolly get dropped, but not as hard as Rashad. Rashad was punching till the very end with the fight he had left in him, and cept a few like Chuck Liddel ect, that doesnt happen. What a dumb commment you left.
by Gil on May 24, 2009 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions
being defensive and trying to force a clinch or holding him in guard is the right thing to do there.. there’s no need to go for offense when you’re out on your feet like that, his instinct told him to swing so props to Rashad for that..

In Rashad’s next fight, he is going to be DESTROYED by shogun!

rashad is a bitch ass wanna be gangsta piece of shit who was callin lyoto a half breed and said before the fight this half breed is bout to get slept i have no respect for someone who is representing the sport like this he is ghetto and the new champ is a far better representer of the sport and lets not forget his cage antics against Forrest Griffen grabbing his nuts and acting simi retarted… lyoto made my week great!
by illsided on May 25, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions
definitely a snap-shot to remember!
i wonder if rashad had any ankle or knee injury?
that ko tweeked his leg and had him fall akward..
dang!~ machida is a killer.. i dont think page can hang with this dood~
and rampage is one of my favorites..
i read another post suggesting shogun as one of the only lhw’s that could hang with machida.. and i agree..
i dont see machida having trouble with any other lhw in the ufc.
by stinky~fingers on May 24, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions
Machida will be champ for a looooong time. No one will figure him out because he will also be evolving. SUPER Impressive as expected. “Thank you Daddy, thank you my wife, thank you my family, AND THANK YOU JOE ROGAN!!!!”
Machida is here to stay. No one will hang with or even win a round. Shogun is actually a LAUGHABLE opponent. If somone is going to actually hit Machida, they will need a very long reach as well quickness, and they MUST throw straight punches. You can offer Shogun to hit a heavy bag with a straight right and he will STILL throw a looping hook. Shogun would absolutely be EMBARASSED by Machida. I still want to see Shogun’s gastank. Besides, he shouldn’t be that close to a title shot, but thhen again, you onnly need like 2 straight wins to get one in the LHW division.
Rashad was breathing hard when he got KO’d.
On another note, what in the world is Sean Sherk??? He goes 36-2 by taking people down and GnP’ing them. Then he fights BJ and thinks he can stand up and bang with anyone. Well, since then, he is 1-2. Sherk is either a retawd, OR maybe the California commission was onto something… lol. I think he is just a stupid meathead. Why would he not try for the takedown in the beginning of Round 2 after gettting OWNED in round 1 standing. Gray Maynard make Edgar look 12 years old. Sherk should have done the same. Moron. Props to Frankie though, his standup looked crisp against Trex arms.
by ViolentMike on May 24, 2009 3:17 PM EDT up reply actions
vm~
i would expect shogun to take the subbmission route..
in no ways is shogun near a title fight~ but i would think
with his skills~ he is imo~ one of the few that will givew machida a tough fight..
reagarding sherk?~ i agree.. wtf is up with him?
~and thank u joe rogan~lmao!~i almost forgot!!
machida is the man…
by stinky~fingers on May 24, 2009 4:10 PM EDT up reply actions
vm, i think everyone is saying shogun because he has kicks and can use them effectively. i think that will be key to anyone ever beating machida, unless they get a punch in like serra to gsp.
stinky, why do you think shogun is so far away from a title shot. didn’t rashad get his shot for knocking out the same chuck liddell. and didn’t shogun beat him faster. i don’t get it, rashad knocks out liddell and everyone thinks he’s the #1 contender, shogun ko’s him even quicker and he’s nowhere near a title fight. unbelievable. look at their wins and who they finished and tell me who deserves a shot and who don’t. f’in double standards.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 24, 2009 11:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Rashad had been up against good opponents and winning for a long time, Shogun has looked horrible previously and you know a KO like Chuck received from Rashad can end anyone’s career in the way that they never recover mentally. So that makes Shogun’s win less impressive and the fact that Liddell looked really bad..
You have to look into the fights more then just reading their names and their wins and losses
by RoB on May 24, 2009 11:43 PM EDT up reply actions
but anyways if Shogun gets another impressive win in his next fight against someone tough then we could see him a title fight or atleast a title eliminator!
by RoB on May 24, 2009 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions
Indeed a beautiful picture. Probably one of the best one’s I have ever seen. Now mabye Rashad will keep that big mouth closed.

this ko reminds me of the nasty ko tank abbot had back in the day.
tank layed out dood very simular to the way rashad landed..
not exactly~ but simular..
this ko is definitely in the running for best ko of 2009..
candidates right now are~
fedor over aa
machida over rashad
and that sick back fist/elbow that dood got in that other org~

imo~ i dont see forrest reaching number one conteder status any time soon.
i think andy will send him back in the line~
aside from shogun and rampage[who will fight next].. i see
luis cane~ bones jones and/or [maybe] vera working their way up to fight the champ.

by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 24, 2009 11:13 PM EDT up reply actions
cane is a heavy weight. Shogun will probably need 1 more win for a title shot but if Griffen shocks the world and beats anderson he will be after Page. NO way Page beats Lyoto.
by hatteras on May 24, 2009 2:40 PM EDT up reply actions
how can you say that? money talks and i’m sure machida vs anderson could happen if they put that typical “who is the best p4p fighter on the planet” spin on it..
honestly if they train together it means they spar and that means they halfway fight already why not make it for real and get some big money for it? it’ll happen one day if AS can beat forrest and maybe shogun?
by randy murders on May 24, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Lyoto vs. Anderson sparring probably consists of mostly evasion work, I don’t think they go at it Chute Boxe style. Anderson Silva is filthy rich, the only reason he’s still fighting for the UFC and not Roy Jones Jr. is his contract with the UFC keeps him in for like 5 fights this year, and one fight after that if he keeps defending his title, and it automatically renews one fight every time he defends his title.
Silva said the belt is Lyoto’s, he doesn’t want to challenge Lyoto or hold the belt. I think its going to be similar to Shogun/Wanderlei where Shogun fights a ton of the top 10 contenders and cleans house while Wanderlei gets the big sellers for his title matches.
by Dan on May 24, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions
randy murders~ money does talk~ but andy vs machida will never happen..
garanteed!
by stinky~fingers on May 24, 2009 2:42 PM EDT up reply actions
Silva won’t fight Lyoto, he said he won’t compete for the 205 belt because it belongs to Machida,
He said that last year.
by ShaiZ on May 24, 2009 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s pretty much EVERY one of his fights.
by chefdaddy on May 24, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Seriously. He got hit like 4 times the whole fight up until the final fury. My ONLY concern with Machida is his chin, because even when he spars, he most likely doesn’t get hit. Hopefully his dad brought in that giant guy that was in the crowd of his first fight and straight man slapped him in the face 3 times. He really should have a training session where he just stands there and lets people punch him in the face. It is the only way anyone can hit him – if he allows it.
by ViolentMike on May 24, 2009 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I hope this quiets the naysayers a bit. If I’m in a fight, I want to hit the other guy as many times as possible…without getting hit myself. It is a technique, not a retreat. He has the potential to get even better. I am now an official Machida fan.

I could not have picked a better ending. First truley top ten guy Rashad fought.
by fnuts on May 24, 2009 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
LOL. After Rampage gets absolutely humiliated by Machida, you’ll realize that he’s just on a different level. Who else on the top 10 do you think will beat him? Rampage? Maybe, but that fight could go either way since Rampage had a rough time with Jardine and is one-dimensional. Shogun? I like Shogun more than anybody but Rashad can still beat him… and that’s about it.
Don’t be a typical MMA fan who completely discredits a fighter after they lose. Rashad is great but Machida is just better (much better).
by Jono on May 24, 2009 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Rashad isn’t amazing, good but not amazing.
by Bennie Blanco on May 24, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Rashad is good, but loved to see him KOed. And Shogun would beat Rashad.
by Bluepit on May 24, 2009 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions
First, Rampage is NOT one dimensional, he is a wrestler with the best boxing skills of anyone in his division. I suggest you watch some of is fights.
If you are going to use the logic that Rampage had a tough time with Jardine then you will also have to say the same about Machida who couldn’t finish Tito Ortiz.
Machida was awesome and it was a fun fight to watch. Until he fights Page I would be careful saying he will humiliate Page. No One in the UFC has done that yet.

Opps Sugar you forgot to play with your nips. Tito beat Rashad. I have been saying this all along Rashad has got lucky a couple times thats why hes the underdog in every fight cause he sucks! Justice for the IceMan baby!
by mak on May 24, 2009 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions
You can’t argue with the Rashad haters Slugger. They’re all blinded by their foolish hate of this made up evil “cocky, showboating” jerk. Everyone else can jump on the cage, run around screaming, or do whatever else they want after a victory, but Rashad has a rather tame celebration and he’s the devil incarnate. A. Silva can dance around and “show up” his opponents all fight, but Rashad does a little juking and jiving and he’s a cocky SOB. Everyone who thinks Rashad is a cocky person for trash talking, do yourself a favor and watch a NBA playoff game this week, and as you seen them talking trash all game and screaming at officials, think to yourself, “Oh, this is what proffesional athletes do”.
by Diceman on May 24, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions
He could have been humble and mature in victory.
Like last night when he got brutally KFTO, he had no trash talk then.
by KS on May 24, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions
KS, your stupidity is mind boggling. Rashad has never trash talked ANYBODY! Not a single person!
Where does this crap come from? I’m absolutely baffled.
by Jono on May 24, 2009 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Jono — I’ll just say it: Racial. Most of this is because of racial bias, regardless what anyone pretends. Guaranteed, 99% of the haters are white. Guaranteed. Silva gets a pass because he’s not from the U.S. But you’re right, there’s no difference between Rashad’s tame version of celebrating and having fun than seeing all the other stupid (fun stupid) antics after they win.
by MMACrossfire on May 24, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions
You’re probably right crossfire and I agree. I just didn’t want to bring it up because people would be like: “don’t pull the race card, you liberal hippie!!!!!11”
His crotch grab was annoying as hell but that’s it. The amount of hate that Rashad gets is COMPLETELY disproportionate to his actual behavior. The guy is as respectful as can be, before and after fights, and never talks crap. This “cocky loudmouthed trash talker” just doesn’t exist. Period.
by Jono on May 24, 2009 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions
That’s exactly what I’ve been saying, he is always respectful before and after fights. What happens in the heat of battle in any sport is a part of the game. Period.
by Diceman on May 25, 2009 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions
I have also said the same thing, but some fans just love to hate certain fighters, and Rashad is one of them. A lot a fans had no respect and a dislike of him before he beat Chuck and Forrest, mwhen he beat them two their fans just joined together on a major hate campain and complained about or moaned over every little thing he did. Chuck ha knocked out loads of people nand it is no big deal he gets knocked out by Rashad who most fans thought he had no chance of beating him (not me) and they want to string him up by the nearest tree for doing a little heart flutter or you get stupid comments like it’s payback for knocking out Chuck. WTF. You would have thought he did a steaming dump in the middle of the Octogan the way the mostly Forrest and of course the bitter Chuck fans made such a deal of the crotch grab. Machida may have knocked him out, but he still beat your heroes and he would beat them exactly the same way if they fought again. Some fans act like some of their favorite fighters are their blood relatives, fukn unreal.

Blazy j I agree 100%, F*ck Rashad! He got what he had coming to him. And beyond the Chuck thing, the way he grabbed his nuts and kissed his hand to Forrest ensured that the fans would have a good laugh when the coin was flipped and it was his p*nk ass layed out.

Jardine fought Forrest quite a while before Rashad and he fought Chuck. Do you think it really makes that big of a difference? Rashad and Keith are such different fighters. Rashad was gracious in defeat. Lyoto implemented his plan flawlessly and took it to Rashad. Everyone (except Lyoto) loses in this game, time to go back to the drawing board.

Machida with aggression is a scary dude.. Only fighter I can see beating him now is Shogun. Rampage will be destroyed, he is way to one dimensional for Lyoto, not checking kicks, and he will pretty much be forced to come at Machida.. Which all spells victory for Lyoto. (I also think Rashad would have KTFO Page and i’m not even a fan of Evans.)

I noticed that in those last few seconds before Rashad fell, he was doing those little gestures like “that don’t hurt” and trying to look cool while taking those hits from Lyoto. It’s the same thing Rashad was doing with Forest….
Rashad should’ve been less concerned with his image of looking cool and more preoccupied with trying to stay alive against Machida.
Seeing Rashad go down like that, wow, I was shocked.
Lyota is gonna be an awesome champion that inspires a lot of people I think.

I agree. I think what we were watching was Rashad trying to do some trash talking while he was beating Machida’s fists with his face, and just as his big mouth was flapping in the breeze ready to spout some more ignorance( ala Griffin ), Machida slammed a bomb into it.
by Frank n' Sense on May 24, 2009 8:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Obviously you only watch UFC, and don’t realise what an in-shape and ready to go Shogun could do.. So if anything is laughable it would have to be your ignorance.

That was years ago, in Japan, where drug testing was not done. Shogun in the UFC has yet to look like the Shogun that dominated PRIDE. A huuuuuuuuuuuuge difference. And KO’ing ol’ Chucky does not mean he’s back. 4 years ago, I would take Shogun over any LHW. Right now, I can think of at least 10 LHW’s that are much more than capable of defeated Shogun rather handily. But back in the day, you could have lined Shogun up against the Top 10 one after another and I’d have $ on SHogun. But he is not the same.
No perfomance enhancers, he’s fighting bigger guys (Japanese fighters are not known for cutting weight), and he has had 2 knee surgeries.
Shogun would look like a straight up amateur in the octagon against Machida. Just like Machida makes all his opponents look.

Wont be much of a choice of Machida demos the top 5 in LHW. Anderson is dabbling up there for a reason. No one at MW can put on a good show. How many more main events do you think they will slap in with Anderson either dancing around the ring or totally killing his guy? Machida and Anderson would be a sick main event.

Anderson said long before Lyoto won the belt that he wouldnt even go for the 205 strap cause he believed that Lyoto would be champ … But now that hes champ he would go for it?
Their are decent friends , it wont happen no matter what Dana wants.
Page will knock Lyoto out anyway.
by Dayzah on May 24, 2009 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think Dana would do it.
Then you tie up two belts, he wouldn’t make any money. NO ulitmate fighters for title shots because 1 guy would hold 2 if A Silva wins.
It’s just to scary if A Silva happens to win, no matter if Lyoto is the favorite.
It would cost Dana 1 or 2 great pay per views in 1 year, that is a lot.
by Bennie Blanco on May 24, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions
If you look at the last 2 of Andersons fights as a main event PPV they were not good at all. Dana said himself that he thought the last one to be one of the worst main events in UFC history. So in reality Anderson at MW with no great compo is not a great ppv event…
by MickiB on May 24, 2009 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions
Would both belts be tied up? I keep hearing that Silva would just vacate his MW belt and make a permanent move to LHW.

rashad really needed that, i think he will come back stronger and i hope with a better attitude..to me lyoto is the type of person i want holding the title for a long time..born and bred to be a fighter and he really was honored and so pleased to be the new champ..i am not worried about rampage hitting him..rashad tagged him twice maybe three times..that’s it..lyotos stance is crazy hard to beat..he is literally leaning way back..yet he could kick your head off like that..so wicked..what did joe say about him only taking one power punch in his whole career? from BJ? how long ago was that? what a night of fights..but wtf is with the serra/hughes fight being fight of the night?? i think edgar deserved it more!!!!
by sarah on May 24, 2009 11:36 AM EDT reply actions
rashad may come back better, but he will never fight again for the belt. lyoto will represent the ufc and mma well. whats most amazing about lyoto is he doesnt attack until hes sure he can connect…a true fighter.
by fnuts on May 24, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions
I wouldn’t say he can’t fight for the belt, rashad can beat a lot of 205’ers, probably excluding Lyoto.

wow i never knew Rashad had so many haters……I like rashad but Machida was AWESOME !! Shobun , Rampage maybe some young fighter ,in a few year like Jon Jones. I don’t know
by mark on May 24, 2009 11:37 AM EDT reply actions
the thing is that at this point if anyone happened to beat Machida, he could get a rematch and win the title back from almost anyone. You can’t say the thing about the fake TUF champs Forrest and Rashad. My point is that Machida will be the champ until he body gets old and fails him. However Machida is no Chuck Lidell with his party habits unhealthy ways (beerbelly), Lyoto has the talent and the discipline to remain in his prime condition or close to it for several years.
by JRE on May 24, 2009 12:13 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed, I could see a 2 or possibly 3 year reign. Especially if he gets an ultimate fighter or two to give him 8 months off.

Only 2 people i can think of that might take the belt are Rampage and Shogun. Rampage has a damn good chin and striking power i don’t know why he has been scared to exchange in his last few fights. Shogun, well we all know what kind of skills Shoguns has. Beautiful kicks, knees, strike combinations, bjj black belt and also a iron chin.

i am one of the guys who always found lyoto boring, and im not hoping on the bandwagon, i never said he wasn’t good because that’s impossable to argue, however the first round of this fight was typical of machida’s fights two exchanges in 5 min, meh. He is gonna hold that belt for a long time, the champs of the ufc are so legit now it’s scary, lyoto, a.silva, gsp, and bj, all they need now is fedor and it’s a wrap. I am thankful that he is becomeing more agrrestive, and his last two fights were good, so i’ll go back to eating crow now, but the machida haters are still here, i’ll keep it alive.

Ya I agree , the first time Lyoto and Page exchange blows it will be over , Rampage is a much much better striker then Evans ever will plus has it takes alot more then what Evans took too put him out , just looks at his losses too Wandy and Shogun … I think Rampage would connect before Lyoto could hurt Rampage enough too put him away.
Lyoto is looking very good , especially since his Soko fight.

For anyone that thinks that Page is going to knockout Machida, give me your number…….I can give you a great deal on some prime real estate in the Artic Circle………..anyone who honestly thinks that Page is going to knock out Lyoto is on crack……I think Page is probably the next in line, and he’s a stud, but if you know anything about this sport and have seen this Machida’s last 4 performances, there’s no way in hell you can make that claim. The LHW belt will not be changing hands for a long, long time.

This guy will be the title holder for a while, at least until someone actually figures out his style. I am guessing Rampage next who will be severely beaten by Machida, if Forest beats Silva he will get the shot next, again no chance, and then Shogun who I believe will have the best chance of winning.
by yoububg on May 24, 2009 2:20 PM EDT reply actions
Can somebody please explain to me why so many people are saying that Shogun has a chance of beating Machida? Look at Shogun’s record since coming to the UFC:
1. Choked out by Forrest
2. Almost went to a losing decision against an over the hill 44 year old Mark Coleman, and gassed at the end of the first round.
3. Knocked out an over the hill Chuck Liddell in Chuck’s last fight in the UFC.
WHY THE HELL do people put him in with Rampage as having one of the best shots at beating Machida?

You are absolutely right about that. Rashad had major hate before any of the pathetic excuses people are giving for disliking him now. They never had any real reason to. Now the excuses they are giving is because a fake heart attack against Chuck and a crotch grab against Forrest who it didn’t bother at all. If Rashad had scratched his head during the fight, the same people would have responded exactly the same way. Now most of them have their heads up Machida’s ass, another fighter they were winging and moaning about before he knocked out Silva. F’ckn unbelievable

Machida is going to be tough to beat. It will be nice to see a guy in the division actually be able to hold onto the belt for a while. I have liked listening to some of Rashad’s intelligent and thoughtful comments on fighting but I was a doubter and wasn’t surprised by the outcome. Don’t understand how he is getting props for hanging in there. He clearly has no significant chin. The strike in the 1st round that sent him to a knee was a love tap.
Maybe Rampage can give Machida more of a fight. I definitely think he’ll tougher than Shad.

by ItsJustMe on May 24, 2009 9:32 PM EDT reply actions
I think you’re saying that Rampage will KO Machida. In his dreams, maybe. Like as he’s waking up from getting KO’d by Machida. See, the problem is that in order to KO Machida he has to be able to get close enough to connect. By the time he gets close enough to connect, he’ll be eating two kicks and a straight left to the face.
by MMACrossfire on May 24, 2009 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions
MMACrossfire, I would say his chances of KOing Machida is better than anyone elses in the division BECAUSE he has punch defense. Watch the video again, Machida won because of that flurry of punches he threw which means Machida HAD to be in close to deliver them, that also means he can be countered. If he fights Page the same way Machida won’t win the battle of flurries as Pages hands are much better and more powerful especially since he leaves his chin up.
AGAIN, staying outside with a guy who likes to kick is not a smart game plan. Rampage is a guy comfortable with cutting guys off and forcing them to strike so he can block and counter like every experienced boxer does. Rampage will not hang outside all day he will press the action. Just watch the Wandy and Chuck fight.
The man who has a chance against Machida is a man with great punch defense IT IS NOT an another elusive guy. Machida is a points fighter who now has started to let his hands go so elusive won’t work. Machida may very well beat Page but it won’t be a simple straight left following a kick that will knock him out or down, Machida will have to decision Page because he has better protection and a chin to deal with.
