UFC 98 results from last night and recap for 'Evans vs Machida'

UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida" went off tonight (Saturday, May 23) from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.
It was an interesting and exciting night of mixed martial arts to say the least.
The world light heavyweight title tilt between champion Rashad Evans and undefeated challenger Lyoto Machida was indeed, as Joe Rogan eloquently put it, a "battle of patience."
But that all changed toward the end of round one when "The Dragon" exploded with a head kick-straight left combination that put "Sugar" on his back. Machida pounced, but Evans did not appear too badly hurt and was able get back to his feet.
He couldn't say the same in the second round.
Machida clipped Evans with a straight left that had his legs involuntarily dancing. Machida kept his distance and continued to pummel Evans in the face. Evans was able to escape, but then the Brazilian tattooed him with a blistering series of punches that put Evans out cold.
Ice cold.
Holy shit is all I have to say -- it was incredibly impressive to watch Machida do his thing. Evans has a great chin, but it was no match for the pin-point punching of Machida -- when he engages and unloads, boy does he bring it.
Karate is back! And, in the process, perhaps the revolving door atop the 205-pound division will finally come to a stop.
The epic grudge match between the two former welterweight champions and mortal enemies, Matt Hughes and Matt Serra, started off crazy with Hughes getting hurt bad with an accidental head butt, which Serra followed up with strikes.
Hughes appeared to be done, but he was able to grab a leg and stay alive. In fact, he did more than just that -- he came out in the second round and won it in typical Hughes fashion with a big takedown and ground and pound.
And it looked like the final frame was going to be more like the previous, but Serra was able to score a big takedown of his own with about two minutes left in regulation. It wasn't enough -- Hughes was able to win the three-round fight on all three judges scorecards.
It's a bit puzzling how not one judge gave Serra the nod because it seemed much closer than the final outcome. Regardless, Hughes lives to fight another day, telling Joe Rogan after the bout that he intends to speak with UFC President Dana White about competing again soon.
Serra's future, however, is not so clear -- the Italian New Yorker all but ruled out a move to lightweight because of his affinity for pasta. Only time will tell how he fits in to the 170-pound mix moving forward.
Holy Foupas-Pokam!
Drew McFedries dropped the hammer right off the bat in this 185-pound battle of sluggers, putting "Professor X" on his butt early. He tried to weather the brutal barrage, but as he got to his wobbly feet "Massacre" blasted him with an evil uppercut.
McFedries continued the savage assault until the referee in charge of the action had no choice but to pull the rabid beast off his prey.
Mike Golderg said it best -- WOW! It was only 37 seconds, but it was a damn impressive half-minute performance. It was painful to watch.
So, too, was the middleweight match between Chael Sonnen and Dan Miller, but for different reasons.
The submission-prone Sonnen survived an early scare from the New Jersey native, popping his head out of what appeared to be a very tight guillotine choke. From that point on he relied on his superior wrestling to take down Miller and beat him up on the ground, which lasted for just about three rounds.
It was a big win for the Team Quest fighter -- he has struggled inside the Octagon. And taking a fight against a red-hot Miller -- who had a 10-fight win streak ended tonight -- on super short notice will go a long way toward getting him in the 185-pound title hunt once and for all.
Perhaps as soon as UFC 102 on August 8 in front of a hometown crowd ... he deserves the chance.
In the opening fight of the main card telecast, former lightweight champion Sean Sherk had essentially no answer for the stand up attack of Frank Edgar. He was peppered with quick combos and straight power punches for 15 minutes straight.
Sherk 2.0 essentially shucked his wrestling once again with the exception of a powerful shot in the second round. And that's very strange, considering Gray Maynard was able to impose his will on Edgar just one fight ago with relentless take downs.
Either Sherk believed he could win the fight upright or Edgar was just too quick and elusive for him to catch. Either way, he'll have to go back to the drawing board and figure out how he can get back to the top sooner rather than later ... he's no getting any younger.
On the flip side, Edgar returns from a loss (and a severe knee injury) to score a huge win over a very capable opponent. He more than likely leapfrogged a few folks in the very crowded lightweight division tonight with a very impressive showing.

Wooohooo! dang right! Besides the fact that I don’t like the guy, I won some dough out of 2 sucker$ thinkin’ that Rashad would win. Maybe against Rampage, but he’s next in line, waitin’ to get beat up as well. I do like Rampage, but I just don’t see him havin’ the tools to beat MAchida.

Yeah I thought it was an awesome knockout. Shad looked like he was crying as he was getting beat around. Mouth wide open and everything.
And whats with everyone thinking with the Hughes/Serra fight? You can’t give a guy around for being rocked by a headbutt. Even so, Hughes got a takedown, had back control, attempted a rear naked choke, sort of attempted an arm triangle. 2nd round, all Hughes, and 3rd round to Serra. 29-28 to Hughes.
Oh, and I thought the Professor X fight was stopped a bit early. I mean, the guy was trying to defend the whole time, and had a leg about to takedown. Don’t get me wrong, I think McFed was on his way to winning, but just a big early.

I think this fight settles whether or not Machida is “overrated”. That was amazing. Rampage is going down.
by Jeremyjackson on May 24, 2009 1:17 AM EDT up reply actions
Well Prof.X clearly was disoriented and it was just natural that he was tryin’ to hold on to Drew’s leg. But the stoppage was of his best interest. He clearly buckled up twice, and no further damage was needed.

My boy Chida put on a hell of a show. I think that is the last time I have to read any haters put his name and “boring” in the same sentence….
Also, How about Edgar? His stand-up was retarded!!! No one was giving him a shot, but he completely worked Sherk for all 3 rounds!!!

Lavigne was booed because of a questionable stoppage.. well, a bullsh!t stoppage of the Nover fight. Sounded like a real crappy call. He had them bad ones recently too. Getting worse than Mazzagatti

The heir to the motherf’n throne has arrived. No one is gonna beat this guy. If he can smash up a counterstriker like evans in this fashion what chance do forward aggressive fighters (i.e the entire division) stand against him.
by NameNotRequired on May 24, 2009 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions
True that NNR. I’ve thought Rampage’s power is a bit (just a bit) overrated for some time now. I still had Machida as a question mark, but I’m sold on him (finally). Only person I can think of that MIGHT have a SLIGHT chance, would be Shogun. And thats IF he returns to ex-PRIDE form. Anderson could challenge but I doubt it. End result, Machida cleans out the division and moves to Heavyweight and kills Brock.
by Synyster on May 24, 2009 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions
I was wondering why they were booing him. I can’t ever remember a ref being booed when introduced.
by DSmith on May 24, 2009 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions
So right, NNR. Machida will not be “figured out”. This guy is special. The lunging punch combo he landed early in the second was ridiculous. His footwork and accuracy tonight were superior to what we were seeing from the Spider a year or two ago.
With the power punching and killer instinct this guy showed tonight, it’s time for us Maniacs to plan on an extended Machida stay on the LHW throne.
by Jeremyjackson on May 24, 2009 1:52 AM EDT up reply actions
if this cat cleans out the lhw division which i believe is the best division in the ufc or any other organization i would have to say he is the p4p king. becuase no one can boast that kind of record against that kind of competition. no one.

There’s only one guy I think can be groomed to possibly beat Machida… Jon ‘Bones’ Jones… an 84 inch reach and he’s only 21. But right now it’s all Machida for the next few yrs.
by DAVE A on May 24, 2009 2:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Rashad ain’t dancing now – it looked like at one point during the first he was gonna grab his balls again (like in the Griffin fight) but common sense or the thought of knowing that he was gonna be unconscious soon and not want machida to beat him to death stopped him…
by Tim D on May 24, 2009 6:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Damn Johnny Bones has some huggers here. He will NOT beat Machida, unless its in like 3 or 4 years and Machida by then will be 33 or 34 and exiting his prime. Even then, Machida would still beat him. Dont hype this kid up too much guys, hes only had 2 UFC fights, and neither has been a finish.
by Synyster on May 24, 2009 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m on the Jon Bones Jones wagon as well and not ashamed to say it. If he keeps his head on straight he’ll have all the tools to put Machida’s belt at-risk. His foundation and current tools are incredible. If there was no Machida I’d call Bones the heir to the throne.
I feel bad for Evans, I’m a fan and it sux to have your 1st loss be a KO and your 1st title defense. I’m not sayin he wouldve won but had he mixed it up with his wrestling he may have survived longer. I know he’ll learn from this loss and mash-up his next opponent. I say match him against the winner of Franklin vs Wand next.
As far as Rampage getting the next shot at Machida, I’m a huge fan of his but outside of a lucky left or right hook theres no way he can win. In fact, the entire 205 division has no chance at this guy. Like someone above said, if Shogun gets back to his PRIDE form it’d be a heckuva scrap. He and Bones are the only potential threats right now.

Rashad did exactly what I knew he would do…just prove to be another TUF 1 pump, Chump (another Champion that cant defend his title). by now we have had TUF stars become UFC champion, but I dont think any of them have any successful title defenses under their belt.
Machida did exactly what I knew he would do….cOMPLETLY outclass Suga! I told you guys that the fight wasnt going to be anywhere as close as most of you thought. I dont know man, i see a lot of Machida slurping on this site this morning! Where are the hundreds of Machida bashers that call him boring? EATING CROW?
Rashad did exactly what I thought he would do…Prove to be a very good fighter, but not in the top 2 of the division. I have been saying it for a while now that the best LHW title fight that the UFC could book for us fans would be Rampage vs. lyoto….and boys its on its way! 1st we will have to sit through another season of TUF, and normally I would be furious over a champ being sidelined by TUF….but in this case I dont mind!
Machida deserves to be on TUF!! He is a GREAT guy and an ELITE fighter who still doesnt get the respect he deserves from the casual fans. TUF will be a great way to introduce casual fans to the NEW LHW champion. So I actually dont mind the title being held up in this case. Machida probably wouldnt be ready to defend his title until October….pushing his date with Rampage back to december, which is when TUF will end isnt so bad.
Whats next fro Rashad? I say let my main man shogun make his name off of Rashad!
Shogun vs. Rashad! Git-R-Done!

Ahhhh, I slept soooo good last night. :)
Machida did really bring game, hats off to the new deserving CHAMP!!
I think we can all say Machida has some sort of a chin , he ate 3 lightning fast and hard hits in a row from Rashad strait to the head. Did anyone notice how he was throwing some HARD kicks to the head?? Even that awsome low-high kick combo connected! WOW, I don’t think I’ve seen anyone pull out such good quality kicks that easily, especially against explosive Rashad.
To the new CHAMP – Cheers!

What a terrible night for me too!I got 5/11 in my predictions and,i lost 100 bucks so…a freaking chance that we were not a big gang yesterday b/c i,would have lost wayyy much more.John,i feel for you buddy, without been sarcastic you actually made me accept my evening a little bit better when id remember your locks!
FIRST AND FOREMOST!I want to congrats all of the real fans of Machida! Those who at least did follow him since is beginning in the UFC…I remember been, very frustrated in his 3 first fights b/c strangely almost nobody was paying attention to him and he was facing criticism from the UFC and the fans that he wasn’t enough marketable and was a boring fighter??
And please i,dont want to hear that the, majority of you who pick him yesterday saying that you were fans of Machida’s for a long time…i know the real fans on this board who really were fans since day 1 just, like a was!
For you guys the real one, those very, very few who actually did follow him since day 1… I know how proud you guys must be b/c he finally got what he deserve..the recognition of his striking technique an elusiveness.Though until yesterday was, only to pin point his opponent. But,damn he impress me to finally finish a fight against a top 10 opponent(i don’t count the Thiago’s fight b/c well every body knows why).
So now that Machida’s on top.I,personally think that A.Silva, will beat him when, they face off in the future.I know yall gonna say, that fight, will never happen. But yall wrong about that.I catch an interview with Dana and he said that, will happen if Silva beat griffin.Even Soares said that, can happen but the ufc’s gonna need to give, like 100 millions to made it happen. We all know that, they wont pay that and,Dana, will force them to fight each other…A Silva is the, only guy that, can beat Lyoto’s and gods know that it take me a lot to said that for A silva…Anyway i’m not jumping back in the Dragon bandwagon b/c of reasons that i mentioned before.
So i guess i’m gonna have to feel, like every fans that always want GSP or Fedor’s to lose but it never happen.
B/C that’s the true the dragon won’t be beat anytime soon everybody, can believe that. But still i’ll be taking for my boy Page, and hope for a miracle.
CONGRAT MACHIDA!!I bow in recognition of your greatness
As for the other fights
Hughes/Serra…Just,like i thought Hughes won but cannoli dwarf did an awesome job.I was impress. Now Serra should choose to go to 155 even if he don’t feel like it.That, would be better for him to renegociated a contract with the ufc!
Prof x/Mc Federes…I told you guys that prof x s*cks! Almost every body here was taking Drew out before the actual fight…big mistake!
Miller/Sonnen…I’m still proud of Dan.He just need to work on his cardio now!Good for Sonnen’s though.I hope that, they fond him a place on the 102 card.He deserves it
Sherk/Frankie…I got fool, like every body else who thought that Sherk, would beat him.But Sherk’s got, only one person to blame for that crappy gameplan to stand with Edgard.
Now i’m sure that Ken-flo and BJ are happy that,Sherk’s got to go back at the end of the line for a title shot!
Larson/Pyle…Damn the best win of Larson since his WEC days.Pyle, you let me down, damn it!
kristof…Ha yeeea war Canada j/k.I pick him for the W. But i never thought in a million years that he,would win that way!
Yoshida…Great job!Another one that i pick.Again surprise of the result
Barry…I’ll say, like DSmith. He need to stop thinking to get thru is opponents with, only k-1.Also he should stop to put attention on his look and dancing skills.Let go the techno viking stuff and learn some subs defence.Still he’s a machine for his size i’m looking, forward to see his improvement!
Nover…pffff fucking nurse!!
Poop…Well i knew to don’t believe in the Kaplan’s hype! Unlike a lots of you did!
But hey,i can’t say that i’m better.Like i said,i’m 5/11 in my picks!

Yeah Chef. I think that is my new favorite knockout. Ever. Perfect. So F*****G Perfect. It looked like Rashad was trying to trash talk AS he was being smashed into semi-death. I’m a Machida defender from way back. This is so satisfying, and to top it off, Machida has his coming out party on a card where a couple other Canadians kicked some major ass. Great night for MMA casual fans and hardcores alike.

Very sweet indeed.
Rashad just stood there and crumbled on his own. It wasn’t like a finishing shot then boom! on the floor. Made it even more sweet that he couldn’t stand on his own.
Do you think Rashad’s knee is okay? Folded pretty bad on that “collapse”.

one name SHOGUN the only man who can and will beat machida
by Brad on May 24, 2009 2:12 AM EDT up reply actions
Shogun wouldn’t have made it out of the first round. Rashad is one of the fastest fighters in the lhw division, and machida made him look like he was fighting in slo-mo. Shogun beat a way past his prime Liddell with a punch that the old Chuck wouldn’t have even noticed hit him, and up until that point Chuck was doing just fine.
In the last 3 fights Machida has improved so drastically it is almost insane. Rashad landed maybe 2-3 punches in 2 rounds. Machida was fast, powerful, and looked like his strikes were laser guided. He was still elusive, but instead of sticking and runnning, as he did in the past, he has stayed in striking distance and made his opponent pay, while leaving without a scratch.
by naturalshadow on May 24, 2009 3:17 AM EDT up reply actions
Shogun?? No way. Maybe a few cycles on and off will help get his cardio back upto where it should be. Other than that, I don’t think he has the talent. Lyoto loves aggressive competition, it fits his style perfectly.
by UFC Champ on May 24, 2009 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions
natural shadow, didn’t shogun beat the same liddell faster than rashad and beat better talent than rashad in his career? why are you posting like rashad is a better or more proven fighter than rua? i don’t think shogun can beat machida either but i think his chances are better than rashad’s. he saw styles in japan that were similar(not like) machida’s. his experience is much higher than rashads. but he damn well better return to his pride days if he wants to beat lyoto.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 24, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions
What I am saying is that the Liddell/Shogun fight didn’t show me that Shogun is back to old “juiced up” form. His cardio may still be terrible, and he looked really bad against Forrest and Coleman.
by naturalshadow on May 24, 2009 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions
damn it! rashad was scared to pull the trigger. nobody really ever pressured machida yet. rashad should have been that guy. respect to machida. i see a legacy being created.
by jack_stand808 on May 24, 2009 4:02 AM EDT up reply actions
Jack_stand808, you can’t pressure what’s not there! He fights to in and out. As a long time karate practitioner, that is the beauty of the lunging and hitting and kicking from the chamber-there is no counter except to wrestle or clench and he has his BJJ fir that. Sokuju tried to pressure him and he lasted a minute. Ortiz pressured and could never find him. Like Joe Rogan said that types of unatural movements he uses comes from training since he was 4 years old-lifelong dedication to not being there. As for Shogun being the one to beat him-I think Machida’s style will make Shogun even an easier win then Evans. That super aggresive Chute Boxe style-with flaling punches will stand no chance to the pin point accuracy of Machida. I think Machida will surpass Hughes/Ortiz’s 5 title defenses. I would put Anderson Silva there because he has 5 defenses but he is still going and that 185# division is no where nearly as good as the 205# division and 170# division that Hughes, Ortiz, and Machida are fighting in.
Welcome the Year of the Dragon!

I was happy with the outcome of this fight. I have always favored the humble champion as opposed to the champion that thinks they are miles above the rest. Machida is another humble fighter with a very interesting and dominating style. Glad to see Rashad get his first loss via destruction.
Though I do feel like Rashad is highly talented, he was lightning quick, but still absolutely no match for Machida, which is just amazing. Hat’s off to the karate master. It will be interesting to see him defend the title to say the least.

Also, despite getting on a bit Hughes has, dare I say it, regressed. This southpaw wrestling stance is nonsense. He is no longer even willing to mix it up anymore. I remember watching him against BJ back in the day and he actually had half decent hands (albeit when BJ was gassed). All he does know is stick that crappy jab out there. I picked Rashad to knockout Chuck and you guys thought I was crazy but I love Chuck not a fan of Rashad but picking fights in my mind is not about favorites it’s about who think is going to win. I think Ace is going to knock Wandy out but that doesn’t mean I hate on Wandy, he is one of my favorites….

When people attack others for “jumping on the bandwagon” it is so funny to me. It reminds me of how when I was in middle school I wanted to pretend that no one else liked what I was into (like I was the first person to ever be a fan of this/that basketball player, or this music group, etc.) Get over it. Mainstream is mainstream.
Let me guess (to all you “I always was and always will be a Machida fan club member from day 1” guys) – I bet you always were a fan of Michael Jordan too from when he was in high school right? Not just from when he played for UNC, and certainly not once he was a pro with some championship rings. Give me a break, everyone is allowed to change their tune with more information. Everyone is entitled to be a skeptic.
Unless I am way off base, which could be, and there are a few MMA fans out there that are just that good. They just always get it, always call it right. Fans of BJ Penn, Machida, and Anderson Silva since birth. Hats of to you guys you have way more MMA street cred than me.

It says alot to lose your first fight in the octagon and lose the belt. Its quite an accomplishment really. I had Machida ftw not because I didn’t respect Evans but because I just couldn’t see how Machida could lose. Everyone was running their mouths about ko power. Knock power doesn’t mean shit IF YOU CAN’T LAND the damn punch. Rampage doesn’t stand a chance because that’s all he’s got. All he’s gonna do is come forward and go for the flash ko. Very bad strategy. That was great KO and all in all a much more enjoyable night of fights than I anticipated.
I had Sherk ftw, but was pleasantly surprised by Edgar’s performance. He was smart, versatile and he got the job done. Not that I wasn’t before but I was very impressed. This win speaks volumes.
I was really hoping McFedries would get his walking papers. Oh well. I hope Prof x gets another chance, if not maybe he can try going on “So you think you can dance?”.
Pat Barry- Don’t let me find out you’re a Houston Alexander. This is not K1. Get a ground game.
I expected Larson to win as well. Didn’t think he’d make such quick work of it, Pyle is tough dude. Larson shouldn’t have been holding on to the fence though.
I’m gonna re watch that beautiful knock out now. I’m still in shock.

Oh damn! Serra/Hughes… Well I enjoyed seeing Hughes as rocked as he was. It was a decent fight but other than that it wasn’t remarkable to me. I don’t know what fights there are for Serra at 170 honestly and I don’t think Hughes has anything to prove and should hang it up too really.

I think Serra was still more aggresive then Hughes. Hughes once again dry humped his way to a win. He did nothing to Serra after the rnc attempt. Serra in the 3rd did more off his back then Hughes. Unfortunatly they let Hughes sit get his rocks off before standing them up. I think Hughes needs to go. He is going to become a stepping stool for the division. He talked all that trash about SErra and he was unable to deliver any amount of gnp. If he trys to avenge his loses against GSP and Thiago Alves-he will get manhandled by the both once again. He looked like the Hughes of old when he walked in but showed that he is a dry humping snoozes fest, with a fighter he does not even consider to be a top 20 guy.

Take away Hughes wrestling and he can’t fight for sh*t! I would probably have knocked him out in the standup, he’s horrible and the only reason he won was because he is a longtime WW champion and so the judges took the easy way out.. Serra won that fight! I’m also fed up with them judges giving the fights to the guy that is on top longer than the other..

Dsmith, says who that’s all Rampage is gonna do? You have to believe that he watched this fight, that he and the wolfslair crew are sitting down right now saying, “ok we need to utilize your strength and power advantage and take this fucker to the ground and pound the shit out of him.” And that has to be the strategy for Rampage. Beat him up for 2 rounds on the ground, bloody him up, dominate the first two rounds on the cards and then make Machida come to you after that. If that happens Rampage, as tough as he is, will take what Machida has to dish out but also return some deadly punches as well. Or he can just continue to take him down.
Now obviously it’s easier said then done and I’m not saying Rampage will definitely win. However, if there’s one guy in the LHW division right now that can beat Machida it’s Rampage because of his size, strength/power, and granite chin. I think Rampage can win but he’s going to need to bring back his wrestling game and really beat Machida up on the ground.
by Anthony on May 24, 2009 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions
You can’t be serious. When was the last time you saw Rampage stick to and execute a complex game plan like that? Most of the time he’s looking for a ko and if the fight goes anywhere else its usually because that’s where his opponent dictated it to be. I have a few questions for you…
Did you happen to catch Machida’s take down defense?
Did you at least catch his take down defense stats?
And you think that if Jackson can’t hang with Machida on his feet then taking down a BJJ black belt is a good idea?
Remind me again when you’ve seen Machida in trouble, over powered, disoriented, frustrated or bloody?
Rampage does have size, strength/power, but granite chin? Don’t get me wrong he can take a shot but granite? Granite like the time he was limp and bleeding through the ropes over at pride?
Anthony you’re killing me.

U people r FOCKING CRAZY! Rampage is the TRUTH!!!! Dont know if he will beat Machida but he has a better shot then anyone else at the moment, unless Shogun returns to his Pride form!
People still dont give Page the credit he deserves. All he has is KO power? R u guys Nuts? Let me talk about Rampage’s great attributes:
-Most powerful puncher at LHW….By far!
-Probably the best Boxing and defense in the division
-Masterful submission defense that people dont give him enough credit for
-The BEST WRESTLER at 205! U have to be retarded to say that Evans has better wrestling then Rampage. I watched Page out wrestle olympic Caliber Henderson….NO shot in hell that anyone is putting Rampage on his back ever again!
-Rampage has amazing G n P…Only time it didnt look good was against Forrest, but nothing page did that night was up to par with his normal performances. Anyone ever see what Rampage did to Chucks body with G n P in the 2003 pride gP? His elbows to the body were ruthless.
-Best attribute of all is that Rampage easily has the BEST chin in the entire division! Anyone who argues against that is a damn fool!
-probably the strongest and most powerful fighter in the division.
-Lets not forget he is the king of the SLAM!!!
Anyone who thinks Page is going to get outclassed in a fight is a damn fool. I dont know if he will beat Machida, but I am POSITIVE that it will be the toughest fight Of the dRAGONS career and the best possible title fight we can see at LHW, that is until shogun returns to top form!

john you left out his attribute of looking bad against people who kick. i am a page fan but he looks terrible against guys that can kick. he has to be 5 times better than he was against jardine. he looks like he has lost his sharpness a bit in the last year. aside from the ko of wandy he hasn’t looked very good to me. he wont get lyoto to come in throwing haymakers like wandy did. if he tries to take him down he has to deal with the clinch. i’ve never seen him manhandle a bigger lhw, only the smaller ones. i think he can beat any other lhw except lyoto or a shogun in pride form, but i think lyoto’s style is much more difficult than jardines.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 24, 2009 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Shogun in his pride form will be Machida’s toughest challenge. I’m not underestimating him just like I didn’t underestimate Rashad, but up against Machida? I can’t see it working out for him. I agree that Jackson is all you just said john but I can’t see him beating Machida at all.
Kinda of interesting how you think that we’re fools if we think he’ll be outclassed but can’t commit to saying that he’ll beat Machida for sure based on ALLLL that stuff you just said. Glad to see a part of you is being realistic.
by DSmith on May 24, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions
THANK YOU JOHN! That’s what I’ve been trying to tell people! Rampage has EASILY the best wrestling at 205 and the best chin at 205. Sure it’s been awhile since he executed a game plan or was disciplined but I believe he’s a completely different and remade fighter training out of the wolfslair camp and we’ll see that come to complete fruition against Machida. Those guys over there will have him sticking to a very disciplined gameplan against Machida. I’m not saying Rampage will definitely win — It’s going to be a sick fight — but he has easily the best chance right now (I agree with those calling “Bones” Jones down the line) of any 205er to take Machida out. Rampage and Machida are the class of that division.
by Anthony on May 24, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
john i completely agree!! Rampage is as solid of a counterpuncher as there is, big difference between him and Rashad is that Rampage actually blocks shots with his defense and then counters, Rashad never does that he is just beating his opponent to the punch because he’s usually much faster than his opponent which was the case against the extremely slow Chuck and Forrest that has no explositivity whatsoever..

He show boated after all his wins especially Liddel fight and when he loses he is no where to be found. Chuck Liddel attended every post-press conference win, lose KO whatever. F Tito!! Did you see tonight’s fight? You’ve been posting all over the place about this future ko. We all know Page has ko power but their styles match up in the worst way for Jackson. Machida fan or not based on his stats- please explain how you think Jackson wins. Tell me how Jackson even gets to hit him and if he can’t hit him what else Jackson has to win the fight? Don’t worry I’ll wait.
by DSmith on May 24, 2009 1:42 AM EDT up reply actions
DSmith, I completely agree that stylistically this is the worst matchup possible for Rampage but he does have the best chance out of anyone to dethrone Machida. Everyone has to at least believe that! And here’s how: BY UTILIZING HIS WRESTLING! Machida hasn’t fought anybody as big and strong as Rampage yet, and Rampage will be the best wrestler he’s fought. Let’s not forget that Rampage dominated Hendo on the ground. Hendo, ok? IF Rampage can take Machida down and work some nasty GnP for two or more rounds, really batter Machida up and get him tired as hell, then I think that will open up the standup game for him in rounds 4 and 5 plus he’ll be ahead on the scorecards forcing Machida to come after him. One of the main differences between Rashad and Quinton is that Quinton can’t be knocked out by straight punches and kicks. The only way Rampage gets finished is by 10+ knees straight on the button and that ain’t going to happen anymore.
Like I said on my other post, I’m not saying Rampage is definitely going to win this, it’s going to be a sick fight but I am saying that I can see Rampage winning this fight.

Rashad has a better wrestling pedigree than Rampage. Tito isn’t a bad wrestler either last time I checked. And I really like how Jackson can win only with this tightly constructed story line about GnP for 2 rounds and then standing him up… look Machida is NOT BJ and Jackson is NOT GSP! That game plan will not work in this fight. A great tool for nullifying wrestling is great take down defense which Machida has. And I can’t even begin to acknowledge this bullshit about how impossible it is for Rampage to be knocked out by a straight punch. “Oh he has to be kneed several time it CAN’T happen another other way”. Let’s not forget that Jardine had Jackson rocked and if Machida pounces on him like he did Rashad tonight it’s a rap! And no Rashad doesn’t have a glass chin. He took Chuck’s punches.
by DSmith on May 24, 2009 2:25 AM EDT up reply actions
i do agree w/ anthony on one thing though, whoever beats machida will have to overpower him. i disagree on some of the others. rampage can’t come in like he did against jardine. he blamed that on jardine being unorthodox which is true but machida is more unothodox than jardine. but alot better and faster, and has better tdd.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 24, 2009 3:01 AM EDT up reply actions
both Tito and Rampage are way better MMA wrestlers and much bigger and stronger than Rashad is.. Rashad fought Lyoto the wrong way that’s why Lyoto looked so good, lets not get ahead of ourselves.. clinching and pretty much what Tito “tried” to do is the best way of fighting him..

dude, Rampage said it himself that night, he was over trained for that fight! Plus Jardine is just a tough guy to fight and train for when you know he’s not that good and it’s a must win.
And I’m sorry but how many takedowns has Machida actually defended? I think Tito tried to take him down maybe three times, Soko maybe once or twice and Rashad once. Cool. Rampage is twice the wrestler of those guys not because of credentials but simply because of his strength and power. He dominated Hendo on the ground, what else do you need to see to understand that?!
Rampage WILL get Machida down and he will pummel him. Mark that shit down.

I don`t think Rampage has a chance agains Machida. He has the same tools as Evans, but i think Evans has much better footwork than Rampage. And Machida´s footwork was way better than Evans, so Rampage will probably share the same faith as Evans against Machida.

that is also very important to note, RoB. Rampage’s boxing is so underrated. Defensively he’s perhaps the best in the game, the way he ducks and rolls with his elbows up protecting his head… there’s simply nobody better. I guarantee you this much, Machida will not finish Rampage. The only way he beats Page is by decision and although that’s a decent possibility, I’d put more money on Rampage getting the TKO gnp finish.

All I can say is WOW!! I almost feel sorry for Rampage. No one has come remotely close to figuring out how to effectively attack Machida. Even more impressive, we have not yet seen Machid’a entire arsenal. Rashad is most definitely a top shelf fighter, but he looked helpless and confused from the opening bell. We’ve all been lulled somewhat into viewing Machida as strictly finesse and a tactition, which he is, but he’s now showing us his strength and fight finishing abilities are equal or superior to anyone in the division.

Not only did he beat a super game and talented Rashad Evans but he beat the most successful camp in the UFC right now-Greg Jackson. Greg Jackson is superb at putting together game plans and figuring out fighters and it was obvious they had no clue how to fight Machida. It will be interesting to see what kind of chin Machida has. It has to be decent at least with all the years of Karate tournments, but I am so curious to see how he reacts to a big shot and who willbe the first one to land it!

And so much for Evans’ wrestling and strength advantage.
I’m usually not a big “Rah! Rah! Go team!” kind of guy, but Machida is basically the first fighter I followed with interest from the very start of his UFC career till championship, and I guess I see what some of you Kool-Aid drinkers get so worked up about.

On a different note, Rashad didn’t do any of his special tactics and I respect him for that. I’d love to see him get knocked cold while grabbing himself making a face. Being entertaining and clowning make make you money and get a title shot, but it won’t help you keep it.

idk if page can touch his chin. he put rashad to sleep like shad put chuck to sleep, and page did wandy and only took three punches at the most in 7 minutes with one of the best boxers in the game. everytime he flinched, rashad ducked and ran. page needs to learn to defend kicks or this cat is gonna break them in two. he is twice as fast as forrest with better technique, accuracy, and power. i think shogun is the only guy with the talent to beat this guy, but he would have to improve tremendously to pull it off. i guess they all have a punchers chance, a la serra over gsp, but its not very likely. this dude is the most calm fighter i’ve ever seen. he never changes expression. when evans did land punches in the 2nd, he backed up just enough to let evans still hit him but not get anything on it. and i think u 2 said the same thing about rashad.

Enough with the hyperbole. The only people Jackson actually knocked out lately were two predictable, aging strikers whose chins have finally given out.
On the other hand, despite having 8 rounds to work with he wasn’t able to knock out either Forrest Griffin or Keith Jardine – a couple of TUFers, only one of whom even comes close to being a contender.

ANDERSON SILVA vs. LYOTO MACHIDA
Isn’t that, the fight that should happen? If Silva beats Forrest Griffin, wouldn’t that be the super mega-fight?
I think Machida and Silva are also closer in physical size than Silva and GSP are.
Hopefully Machida and Silva don’t have a “I won’t fight him because he’s my friend” thing going on.

by Greg Hutton on May 24, 2009 1:01 AM EDT reply actions
Fo sho!
I gotta give that 2nd round to hughes but other than that I think Serra pulled it out in the 3rd.
It at leas tshould have been a split .
by Mattchupichu on May 24, 2009 1:06 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know if I’d say Serra won this fight – if his rally in the 3rd round came a minute sooner, he very well might have, though.
That said, stick a fork in Matt Hughes. He’s way past his prime, he doesn’t have what it takes to be competitive in the division anymore.
by MattNY on May 24, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions
Huges won the fight, certainly not convincingly, but he won a close unanimous decision. Serra’s offense was limited to an accidental head but in the first followed by a punch to the back of the head (unintentional), some attacking bjj off his back, and a take down in the third that was too late. If it had come a minute or 2 earlier, he definitely would have won the 3rd. Hughes employed his usual tried and true style of octagon control, and that won him the fight; good, bad, or boring, the judges look for it and it was the difference tonight…
by Michael D. on May 24, 2009 1:21 AM EDT up reply actions
The problem with your line of argument, of course, is that Hughes didn’t have Octagon control when he took Serra down in that third round. Serra immediately locked him up and prevented Hughes from doing anything at all, which doesn’t amount to Octagon control for anyone, if you ask me, but a stalemate. Thus, when Serra locked in a much harder slam on the reverse takedown and followed that with strikes that actually did some damage, that should have given him enough points to win that last round. So in the last round what you have is both men had a takedown, Hughes was on top for slightly longer but doing absolutely nothing while Serra efficiently tied him up, and Serra landed some reasonably damaging strikes toward the end. I give it to Serra 29-28, hands down.
by Saint Gasoline on May 24, 2009 1:32 AM EDT up reply actions
I thought Serra won the 3rd round only. You cant give him the first round due to an illegal strike. Headbutts are illegal, so you have to discredit the effects of it. Add in Serra only landed a few shots and didn’t do much with it. Hughes got a big throw to side control, took his back, attempted Rear naked choke, then a weak arm triangle.
Hughes wins round 1 and 2, Serra 3.
29-28 HUGHES, hands down
by Synyster on May 24, 2009 1:44 AM EDT up reply actions
…and that’s just plain dumb. I get the whole “rooting for your guy” thing, but anybody that’s being honest about that fight, would never say Serra won. Including Serra!
Boring, maybe, but Hughes got the W plain and simple.
by Jrandolph on May 24, 2009 1:47 AM EDT up reply actions
Did anyone else watch the replay and think that the headbutt was actually Hughes’ fault? When I saw them show the replay between rounds it looked like he ran his own head into Serra’s anyone else see it that way? Not that it matters. I agree that Hughes won that fight, as it was Serra’s to lose after the 1st round and he really didn’t have an answer for the L&P.
by theTRON on May 24, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions
Are you saying that sitting on someone not attacking for a whole round is not a victory?? Hughes sucks.
I had the fight a VERY close 29-28 in favour of Serra.

by sarah on May 24, 2009 1:02 AM EDT reply actions
i think that fight hurts rashad more than it helps him because he didn’t do anything effectively, and that will hurt him. the only thing he learned from this fight is he felt uncomfortable the whole time. he just looked lost after the early kicks. he abandoned his whole gameplan after that and looked like he was fighting to survive not win. he needs an easy fight after this to build his confidence but i don’t see that happening, he’ll probably get shogun or another top ten fighter. he needs some time off in between either way, that was a pretty viscious knockout and he really looked like he was lost after he finally got back up. he really got nothing to build on in this fight, just alot af doubts and unanswered questions. the only question that he did get answered he didn’t want to know. “WTF just happened?”

by MongoMan on May 24, 2009 1:23 AM EDT up reply actions
Sure, give Edgar a title shot. Then have Gray Maynard take the belt from him.
by pancake head on May 24, 2009 1:24 AM EDT up reply actions
Frankie is one of my favorite fighters, but he’s not ready for a title shot yet. He showed a lot of improvement tonight in the third round by nullifying the bigger Sherk’s wrestling takedowns (something he had trouble doing with Maynard), but I’m still not convinced he has those takedown demons totally worked out, because for whatever reason Sherk was never really sold on controlling Frankie from the ground.
BJ Penn would be too much for Edgar to handle at the moment. He is certainly ready for the current number one, number two, and number three contenders for the title shot int he division, and I think he could probably win against folks like Huerta or Florian.
by Saint Gasoline on May 24, 2009 1:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Maybe Edgar is ready for Huerta but I do not think in any way shaoe or form he is ready for Florian. The Florian that is running to the top right now is vicious, effective, and efficient. Florians stand up will prove to much and his BJJ and Elbows from the bottom will end up with Edgar pancaked out and RNC’d! That being said he is most certainly a game opponent and future title holder. I do not think Sherk was shooting with any real conviction and the one time he did in the second he did take him down. Dry humping, wet towel Sherk-rather then I want to be a standup fighter Sherk would have been much more successful last night.

I also remember when I could go to the store and buy a pack of cigarettes and a 6 pack of bud for $5. Times change. UFC is a business and unfortunatly people are in business to make money. Where I do agree maybe with the current economy the UFC could cut back the the cost for a bit or ofer some kind of incentive to the cable company and its customers where you can get a free PPV if you get 6 in a year or for every 2or 3 ppvs you get some sort of discounted rate for your next one. That would help the customer/fans and would drive the repeat ppv buys up for the UFC. That being said there is no control on time length. The UFC has no control whether a fight goes 30 seconds or 15/25 minutes. Just like when I was growing up we used to get all the Mike Tyson ppv’s and it generally would be less then an hour depending how good the preliminary fight was and the average 30 seconds to 3 minutes that the average Tyson opponent lasted. Those ppvs were already $35 to $40 back then to watch Tyson come out and smoke sombody in 90 seconds…It is the nature of the fight game. We still get 5 to 7 fights depending on how long the fights last. We got 8 of the 11 fights last night. How much more do you want?
by Da Monkey on May 24, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions
If Matt Hughes thinks that’s the fight that puts him back on the map, then he’s been hit in the head more than we all realized. He won it on name value alone—Serra was clearly the more active, more technical, and better fighter in every round save the Hughes Snooze in the 2nd.

Im so damn glad that I got to see the main event. Ive been saying from way back that Lyoto was serious business. I really think that he will be champ for a while. Rashad got a good ol fashioned ass whoopin. There is nothing else you can say about it. He danced, he swung, he got his ass handed to him with a newly hurt knee as a side dish.
by enzo-enormous on May 24, 2009 1:19 AM EDT reply actions
I agree. What the hell was Sherk thinking? Frankie Edgar has won every fight that involved a lot of striking, and he has excellent hands, and his lone loss was to a big, powerful wrestler who held him down and controlled him for three rounds—-which is precisely what Sherk excels at. If I were in Sherk’s corner, I would have slapped him with a frozen trout after that first round and told him to take the boy down and keep him there.
Of course, I’m a huge Edgar fan so I’m not going to complain about Sherk’s horrid gameplan!

Regarding the main event, was Evans clowning after he was hurt by Machida before he was KO’d? Evans’ mouth was wide open long before he went down. I couldn’t tell whether he was up to his usual antics (kiss and pull against Griffin) or whether he was just really out of it.
Thoughts?

looked to me like he was pretty much out on his feet and was trying to engage enough to get some room and get his wheels back but machida never let up. his arms actually looked like they were flailing more than they were punching.whenever he gets dazed by a punch he seems to throw alot of punches as fast as he can to get some distance. i guess machida’s team noticed that on film from his other fights.
by buttcrack obama bin laden on May 24, 2009 2:41 AM EDT up reply actions
No he was hurt BIG time!! His mouth was open because he wasnt totally aware and focused and probably because he was gassed a little after being pounded on for a while!!!
I also think Hughes should retire now, he got the win, but thats not a performance of a guy that can compete with Alves or GSP, too slow, l;ack of movement and a serious lack of striking ability!!
by mo on May 24, 2009 1:47 AM EDT reply actions
Rashad will be back even better than before, just like GSP, thanks to Greg Jackson. I think Lyoto will beat Rampage, ’page’s style plays well into Lyoto’s, though I don’t think this win establishes the “era of Machida”, he’s good, but the LHW division is way too stacked right now. Sherk/Edgar was boring, Sherk’s stock in the division has gone down for sure.
Biggest upset of the night for me was Serra/Hughes. Hughes won via lay and pray. On the ground, his strikes and attempts to pass Serra’s guard were effectively stymied. Serra won first round, Hughes won 2nd via LnP, and third was a draw. Hughes sat on Serra for a longer time in the third, but attempted no submissions or landed any effective strikes. If anything I think that fight should have been a draw.
Future successful fighter in the UFC’s WW division, Brock Larson. I’d love to see him fight Anthony Johnson.
