UFC Quick Quote: Tito Ortiz is 'still a force to be reckon with' based on UFC 98 main event

"Well, to start it off, I think Machida will win by what Joe Rogan calls, 'elusiveness!' or in my words 'hit and run.' This will be a great test for Evans to find the range to get the takedown. Machida is the favorite in my experience with both fighters. Never mind there's only one of the fighters that are undefeated truthfully. That mark one on Rashad's record isn't a draw. It's nice to see that one guy I almost submitted will be the champ and the other that I beat is the champ. I’m still a force to be reckon with."

-- Former UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz tells PunchDrunkGamer.com that he's still got game because he's given the UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida" main event participants all they could handle. "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" battled current 205-pound champ, "Sugar" Rashad" to a draw at UFC 73: "Stacked" back in July 2007, but more than likely would have won the bout if he didn't get docked a point for grabbing the fence in the second round. He then had Machida in big trouble courtesy of a triangle/armbar submission attempt late in the third round of their bout at UFC 84: "Ill Will" in May 2008. He eventually dropped the contest to "The Dragon" via clear-cut unanimous decision. So what say you ... is Tito Ortiz still a major player at 205 pounds or can he still compete (and beat) the best in the world?

I agreee….WITH TITO!
I truly hope ha comes back from surgery and is back on top! I’m not a fan of his “businessman” persona, but he’s always been exciting to watch, win or lose!

by kevin on May 22, 2009 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree too Kevin ….but i dont think he will be back on “top” cause he wont come back to the UFC and thats where all the good 205ers are at.

He pretty much did beat Rashad and he came close to Machida. And he beat Forrest, he may still be a force to be reckon with.

by robbyc on May 22, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If he comes back 100% after his surgery AND he stays focused on fighting there are some interesting fights for him and he can still have an impact. He’d be irreverent in the UFC or I should say – he’d be middle of the pack completely healthy. But in other promotions he can still be among the top 205ers, though I don’t see him being a dominating 205er. I don’t see him recapturing any great status.

That’s one Tito is always good at- keeping his name in people’s mouths good or bad.

by DSmith on May 22, 2009 11:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I can make an argument for either side, but since I can’t stand Tito, guess what side I’m taking???

Sure, Tito beat Forrest. BUT, it was only Forrest’s 3rd fight in the UFC (or so, not looking it up right now). The Forrest that fought Tito is much different (better) than the Forrest that had the championship and we know today. Besides the 1st round, this was a fight that was very close and Forrest almost pulled it out in the last 2 rounds after getting smashed in the first. Tito gave it all he had, and couldn’t finish Forrest when he had him in his ideal GnP position. ANd its not like Forrest is known for the best jaw around here, although its a bit different getting hit while in guard… Basically, since then, Forrest has improved his technique and Tito just ran his mouth and claimed he needs surgery. Tito’s game regressed and Forrest’s progressed.

Tito vs Rashad. Tito grabbed the fence to prevent a takedown that would have won the round for Rashad. If he didn’t lose that point and allowed the takedown without cheating, Rashad would have won the fight fair and square. But Tito cheated (or you ain’t trying!) and therefore it was a draw. I will now repeat the same as above. Since Tito fought Rashad, Rashad has improved 10 fold and Tito has, well regressed. The Rashad that fought Tito was a wrestler that didn’t trust his hands and lacked confidence. But after the first round with Tito, he knew he was among the elite. Niether fighter has really been the same since. Rashad is UFC CHAMP and Tito is a Free Agent CHUMP!!!!!

Now if Tito really thinks he gave Machida a good fight, then he probably still isn’t over the beating he took. He was CRYING as he went to his corner after either round 1 or 2 (2 I believe) and he whines “I can’t hit him, he keeps running away from me”. Meanwhile, Tito’s face is bleeding from 8 spots and Machida looks fresher than a March Sanchez GQ photo shoot (ZING!!!!!). Yes, Tito came CLOSE to pulling off a submission, but he didn’t. He lost every round, even the round he nearly pulled off the upset.

Basically, Tito has gotten older, dumber, slower, and accumulated injuries since he fought these guys (Machida he fought pretty recently). Meanwhile, Forrest, Rashad, and Machida are all hitting the PRIME of their careers, are learning more every day, getting faster, and have better camps.

Nuff said??

by ViolentMike on May 22, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You can only beat what’s put in front of you. Don’t understand the grabbing the fence argument. If Tito hadn’t he’d have been a point better off and Rashad would have probably been a point better off too, so it cancels eachother out.

by attakdog on May 22, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fence grap thing – Tito grabs fence and prevents Takedown so he wins the round and loses a point. Round scored 9-9.

BUT, if Tito didn’t grab the fence, AND Rashad was able to keep him on his back for 60 seconds, HE would have won the round and there would have been no point deduction. So instead of a 9-9 round, it would have been Rashad 10-9 which would have won him the fight.

by ViolentMike on May 22, 2009 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s assuming Evans would have won the round.

Moot points. Rashad would give Tito a brutal beating today.

I’ll buy that for a dollar!

by attakdog on May 22, 2009 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tito would still wrestle him and it would be the same, maybe Rashad would win i don’t know but im sure it wouldn’t be a beating!.. Tito does not just let someone hit him like Chuck Liddell does, he’d probably wrestle Forrest Griffin still today, and Forrest has about 0% chance of finishing him and that means that Tito would go into the clinch or whatever to get a takedown cause he wouldn’t be “afraid”..
Tito beats a guy like Jardine for sure so it would be nice if he got to fight him..

POINT BEING, if Rashad were to fight Tito Ortiz ANYTIME, I wouled put a LOT of money on Rashad.

Anyone trying to argue that Tito is better than Machida or Rashad, I will not even bother responding to. I’ll except an argument on Forrest, but Griffin would still be the favorite to beat Tito.

ALL IN ALL, Tito has gotten worse of a fighter over the past 3 years and the other 3 mentioned fighters have all improved the past 3 years. ALSO, in Tito’a mind, he has never lost a fight…

by ViolentMike on May 22, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lol holding the fence out of fear of going to the ground with a guy who will wipe you around doesn’t prove much. Those submission attempts were weak to. Lol if you go back and watch the fight you’ll notice Machida was never in any danger from those sloppy submission attempts. Nice try mr. irrelevant. Come back and face any top ten 205er and learn that you should go fight in DREAM or something.

haha, you posted 1 second after me McArthur =)
I’m here now, and i am a little overwhelmed over the response this thread got so fast..
VM:- Tito is still huge and a better wrestler than Forrest and Rashad is, that could be the difference cause that’s what Tito will try to do!
for all the Mofo’s that keeps arguing about the Rashad fight, Tito grabbed the fence only two times in the whole fight, first time he got a warning and the 2nd time Rashad got him down and was almost guillotined to death and reversed by Tito!.. now lets see Tito got him down about 20 times!

Cogito: go check what Machida has said about that weak submission attempt, also Tito has very good submissions ,he just never really get to see them in MMA

by scott on May 22, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Also I would like to see people’s proof that he has digressed in talent, his last two fights was Rashad and Machida,he beat Rashad(even though everybody goes ,well that was then, not now)then lost to Machida ,who has not lost all the rounds on a scorecard to Machida.
The only proof any of you guys have to back up your story is statements made by Dana White. Also all you MMA fans please remember these statements are coming from a guy who has said plenty of times that Fedor is over rated.

by scott on May 22, 2009 2:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dana’s statement about Tito not looking good has got to be the silliest one of his statements though, he’s fought good opponents the whole time and he must expect him to dominate when he says that he hasn’t been looking good in a long time.. guess what partner he would’ve been a world champ all along if he “looked good”
It’s ok for others to have mediocre nights and injury problems but not for Tito..

what is also funny about Dana is clearly said after the Rashad fight ,he thought Tito clearly won,but all the build up to Machida and everything after that,Tito is not top ten he can not beat anybody ,blah, blah, blah.

by scott on May 22, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rob, agreed on Tito vs Forrest, that’s why I said that’s the only one worth arguing about.

A rematch between them would come down to ONE thing. Forrest stopping Tito’s takdown. Forrest can pick him apart with his reach standing, but if Tito has him on his back for 1/2 of two rounds, he wins the fight. Tito as an underdog vs Forrest would be quite an interesting bet that I would take at +160 or bettter. That is, if Tito is truely 100% healthy…

As for Tito/Rashad – that is a fight that I only watched once, live (not in person, PPV). I’m just going by my memory of how I feel I felt after the fight and I remember thinking at the time that the fence grab decided the fight. Could be wrong of course, but I remember that is how I felt and since I don’t feel like watching that fight again.

And MANIA, its the day before PPV, where are all the new threads at???? Where do us degenerate gamblers get to say who we lost money on this event?

by ViolentMike on May 22, 2009 2:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just to let you know Rashad also grabbed the fence a couple of times but was not seen by the ref,but you can clearly see it ,when you watch the fight ,but the ref was not at a good angle to see it

Just watched the fight again…Rashad grabbed the fence himself in rd 3…so I call that even from tito grabbing it in rd 2 . Also Rashad looked like absolute crap in that fight. He is sooooo much better now.

by robbyc on May 22, 2009 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rashad’s confidence is just skyhigh right now that’s why he’s so good..
but listen nobody has tried to outwrestle him since the Tito fight, and what’s important to say about that fight is also that Rashad won the 3rd round with 20 secs left with that takedown coming from Tito going for a thai-clinch with his back against the cage when all he should have done was go for underhooks or something, anyway up until that Tito had it..
And the only good improvement that i see in Forrest’s striking is his kicks, and Tito ain’t gonna let him kick him like Rampage did!

Thank you,I am so glad someone else has now spotted Rashad grabbing the fence. Also I think it is funny now that you have seen it,go listen to the crap that was coming out of Rashad’s mouth after the fight.

Everybody’s claim on that fight was if it was not for him grabbing the fence he would have lost the second round ,well Rashad did it too,so Rashad would not have won the 3rd round if it was not for him grabbing the fence .So you can not all of a sudden, now change your argument, well look at his face ,I do not have to ,I watched the fight

by scott on May 22, 2009 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just watched the fight yesterday, Tito might have gotten some TD’s and laid on Rashad for as long as he could but he didn’t do sh!t; not a mark on Evans face, there wasn’t no GnP, he wasn’t landing strikes in the stand up; just hangin on for dear life.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rashad’s thumb or finger was what caused the cut, that’s a known thing by now!.. Rashad didn’t do sh’t to Tito! It was so nice to see how Tito elbowed him in the clinch and unfortunately Big John stepped in because Rashad couldn’t keep his mouthpiece in.

One thing I think is hilarious, for a fighter that is not worth a crap, everybody and their mom still wants to talk about him.Look how many post on this story and compare it to all the other stories over the last month. He ,odviously ,is still relevant, which is the point of this story anyway

by scott on May 22, 2009 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

TO ROBBY, i think youre crazy. tito ortiz got handled by machida it wasnt close at all, yeah he sunk in that triangle and ALMOST won but he got handled for 14 and 1/2 minutes. second he barely beat forrest. and that was EARLY in forrests career, EARLY. I think if tito came back which he wont because of all the shit he talks about dana white that he would only be a top 10 fighter in the toughest weight class in the ufc. to think he’ll be a top 5 fighter or even a champ at that weight class is completely idiotic and whoever does think that needs to get REAL!!!

by nick on Jun 3, 2009 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What a ridiculous comment to make. He only won that second round with Evans because he kept grabbing the fence. It saved Tito from losing rounds 2 and 3 and losing the fight. He got schooled by Machida because he telegraphed his shots from 10 feet away and even I could have gotten out of the way of those lame attempts.

by Buster Bluth on May 22, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks Buster, that about sums it up I think. Tito still havin fun with new words and learning to expand his vocabulary I see. “ReckonED” Tito, “ReckonED”; start with smaller words bud, don’t skip over the coloring pages and the pop up pages either.

Right on buster. And how arrogant does he have to be to try to make himself the center of attention in a title fight? He hasn’t actually fought for the title in 2 1/2 years and never will again. At least not a title that counts for anything.

Well ,really, what round did Rashad win ,hum. Also do not forget to throw in that Rashad also grabbed the fence. Also that is real easy to say when you are sitting your butt behind a keyboard.

by scott on May 22, 2009 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i understand your point but might have to disagree…not with the Tito fight but with the title part…if I were a betting man, my money today would be on Babalu (strikeforce champ) to beat Rashad…

by McArthur on May 22, 2009 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

in fact I’d bet on Babz beating a lot of LHW’s in the UFC…the LHW division itself in Strikeforce is 100 times weaker but as a champ Babalu is a valid champ imo…what do ya think?

by McArthur on May 22, 2009 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nada, not saying he wouldn’t beat some guys, but he wouldn’t be holding the belt; thats for sure. I got two words for the Babalu fans, “Jason Lambert”. Nuff said..

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Ortiz can get back to full fitness then he could easily be top 10, but he’ll never be top 5 and truely relevant again. I think he’d be a bad matchup for some of the UFC’s top guys but be a total whipping boy for others. Pretty irrelevant really coz I cant see him getting back to the UFC and fighting top guys again.

I’d have Rashad being the favorite over Babalu. Rashad’s standup has come a LONG way. Babalu has solid wrestling, but not the pedigree of Evans, so his BJJ edge would not be that much of a factor. Rashad developed some vicous KO power and is ready to use it.

Machida could be one of the worst fighters for Rashad to face because you can’t KO what you can’t hit.

well i’ve seen about zero brazilian table tennis players, hahaha.. Babz is good, but Tito is much bigger than him and should outwrestle him and keep Babalu under control in the standup and in the clinch IMO, they just need to fight eachother..
now about the UFC let’s say that Tito got as lucky as Forrest did and got a title shot for beating opponents like “Sick Dog” Ramirez and an injured Shogun, you don’t exactly have to clean out the division to be on top, just get good stylistic matchups and have good nights! then of course a guy like Machida is a terrible stylistic matchup for Tito, but he is for almost anyone..

by RoB on May 22, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL, in my original post, I orignally typed something to the effect of “USA wrestling is still head and shoulders above the rest of the world”, but didn’t want to sound biased or anything…

Yes Babalu wrestled on the Brazilian Wrestling Team. Rashad was a Michigan State All AMerican.

Its almost like comparing soccer amongst USA and Brazil. I would expect Brazil to be better just about every time. Probably 90% of the top Brazilian athletes aspire to play soccer. In the USA, maybe 1% if that, probably much less of our TOP athletes chose to play soccer.

Wrestling is simply an afterthought in Brazil where it is very big in the USA.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 11:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s silly, Chuck’s so washed up now, he doesn’t have the speed or the reflexes anymore which is what his whole game was based on, not to mention a good gust of wind knocks him down nowadays.

by attakdog on May 22, 2009 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He doesn’t need the speed or the reflex’s, you did see Shogun take Chuck down in his last fight; and Chuck popping right back up to his feet as usual? And you honestly think he’s going to be able to take Chuck down and keep him there? Not happening, Liddell would still knock his block off. Ortiz doesn’t knock people out, his stand up is horrible, the only decent part of his striking game is his defense; thats it. Chuck would still tear him apart, he’d fail ever TD attempt and get pounded just like usual.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You make some good points, Ortiz standup is horrible. I disagree that Liddell would win so easily, the level of Chucks decline is alarming and I think Tito could come back better than he’s been for a few years. If his back is back in top shape then he might be able to commit more to the takedowns like he did of old, who knows. I think it would be a much closer fight than you think, and I still think Ortiz would shade it, due to Chuck being about 20% of what he used to be.

by attakdog on May 22, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m gonna have to agree with Chad and attakdog on this one. Going the distance with the top guys and losing (convincingly or not) is way different than not making it out of the 1st or 2nd round consistently. At least Tito was able to survive. A healthy Tito can still be competitive and have options. Chuck is healthy and falling fast.

by DSmith on May 22, 2009 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not saying Chuck can compete better than Ortiz, I’m saying if Tito Ortiz fought Chuck Liddell this year, lets just make somethin up and for the fun of it say they fight in Strike Force in August; if that were to happen I’m saying Tito Ortiz would still lose that fight. Does he match up better with different fighters, is his body holding up better, is he younger and still able to compete with some of the up and coming talent? Sure. But just about any fighter with great TDD and decent striking will own Ortiz, thats just how it is.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 11:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly. Dana should bring Tito back and let Chuck fight the last fight on his contract. It’s a Michael Scott win, win, win situation. Dana wins because it draws huge PPV buys and Tito gets embarrased (yet again), Chuck wins becuase he goes out a winner with a highlight reel knockout of Tito (yet again), and the fans win because they don’t have to listen to Tito run his mouth about his relevance.

On another note, I like the side discussion on Babalu. He always fits into discussions about Tito. I am sure there are more guys who have ben knocked out by Chuck multiple times. At least Randy has a victory over Chuck.

by Sacto on May 22, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont see chuck beating tito nowadays, and I dislike tito and I am a fan of chuck. Im sure Chucks confidence is at an all time low right now too. but that being said chuck can still turn peoples lights off regardless of his chin or reflexes. Tito would need excellent conditioning a good game plan of wearing him out with takedown attempts and sticking to inside while on the feet. Its a toss up, it would be a huuuuge money maker for strikeforce no way it happens in the ufc, to risky for dana

The only person thats gonna gas from TD attempts, is the guy trying to take Chuck down. If a fighter comes in, and his gameplan is to take Chuck Liddell down and repeatedly fight to keep him on the ground, he may as well throw in the towell, he’s screwed.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well, Chuck Liddell’s standup ain’t all that.. Tito was doing well the 2nd time they fought and just got silly in the 3d round because he started to hit Chuck at will.. Chuck has never ever knocked Tito out btw, 1st time he almost took his eyeball out with his thumb and the ref didn’t see it, so he Tko’d him and the 2nd time was just a ref stoppage while he was blocking his shots with his arms..

by RoB on May 22, 2009 1:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tito was done, he didn’t dispute either stoppage, he knows he lost; and Chuck’s stand up might not be all that; but the only way to beat Chuck is to stand up and bang with him and Ortiz doesn’t have the tools to do that. Getting Chuck to the ground and keeping him there is damn near impossible unless a fighter manages to lay some leather on him first. Toe to toe, Tito loses that fight every time guaranteed.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

agreed…Chuck hates Tito soooo much that Tito could hit him with his best shot and Chuck wouldn’t go down just to spite Tito

by McArthur on May 22, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you’re right McArthur it’s about the mental game.. Tito knows that Chuck hits hard and at some point he gets enough of it and just tries something stupid and goes down.. Tito needs to fight pissed and with his emotions like he did against Shamrock and just go at it..
Chuck had him beat mentally both times

by RoB on May 22, 2009 1:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think ,although we will never find out,Tito would no longer be scared of Chuck,he has seen these last few years ,just like we have ,and knows he can beat him now.
People also forget that Tito clearly won the second round in the second fight(not saying much),he was able to get Chuck down.
The two things came to haunt him when it came to Chuck, fear of Chuck’s power then Tito arrogances.
What Tito needs to do is go train with a different camp,if he would do that ,and stick to the gameplan, there is no telling what Tito could accomplish.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly! It doesn’t really matter if you can beat a fighter when he is well past his prime. That punch that Shogun dropped Chuck with wouldn’t have even got his attention 3-4 years ago. Even though Chuck’s chin has betrayed him, I still think he could take Tito. Chuck has his number.

by naturalshadow on May 22, 2009 6:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rob- Chuck absolutely KO’d Tito in the first fight. That was not a tko, Tito was out. I have seen that fight too many times to count, and in the end Tito is out lying on the canvas at big John’s feet, and then when he realizes what happened, he gets up and freaks out.

by naturalshadow on May 23, 2009 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw it as a TKO, Tito wasn’t unconscious. He just had his eyeball nearly poked out from Chuck’s thumb and that’s why he covered up and went down like that.. I’ll check the fight out one more time..

Let’s not forget that the Rashad fight was two years ago. Evans has evolved tremendously since then. Back then he still wasn’t finishing guys sav Salmon and I don’t think there would be a decision or a draw if they fought again. That statement is as dumb as Crop Cop saying the top ten list will be changing soon. It may change but not because of him! Tito, you will have star power in another organization and pick up some wins with lesser competition but until you figure out how to box and take a punch you will not be a force to be reckoned with.

Tito is such a bitch, shut up!!! Just give a predicition, don’t say who you almost submitted and who you beat because YOU DIDN’T. A lot of people almost submit other fighters, it’s the ones who win that get bragging rights. As far as the Rashad fight goes, if Tito didn’t hold on to the cage the first 40 times, Rashad would have scored more points and smashed Tito’s big head.

This guy is going to be around for a long time shooting his fat mouth off. Makes me sick.

Rashad in 3, Serra in 1.

I say one tune up fight(that any fighter would need) and Tito will start climbing the ranks very rapidly. If his back had truly been bothering him and preventing him from being 100%, then we’re gonna see some great fights if he comes back to the UFC. I enjoy watching his fights more than any other fighter, even with Shamrock! There’s just something electric about his style.

Let’s face it, Rashad had a tough time with Bisping, and imo let Forrest win the 1st round and most of the 2nd. he beat an over the hill Liddell who it seems like everyone has beat in the last year or so. So, if he let’s Machida get into him like he let Forrest, it’s all over in round 1.

by slim473 on May 22, 2009 10:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was a great pic.

But Tito DIDN’T submit Machida, and he forgot to mention he was getting beat for much of the fight. The best part was when Tito egged Machida on, so he hammered him then picked Tito up and slammed him!

However, it was an entertaining fight and I hope we see more of a prime Tito Ortiz.

Had Round 3 been 5 seconds longer, Rashad would have knocked you out. He was in the middle of grounding and pounding you when the buzzer sound off and Machida totally dominated you. That submission attempt was the only offense you got on him in the 15 minute fight and you barely squeaked by a controversal split decision victory on Forrest Griffin. If the objective was to see who could talk the most trash without backing it up, you would be the undefeated world champion.

With the size of Tito’s head now, he could probably be heavy enough to make heavyweight and fight Lesnar.

by slim473 on May 22, 2009 11:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What a great photo. Tito is relevant and I believe would be very competitive in the top 5-8 in the UFC. Unfortunately, as others said, he’s likely to go to a “tier 2” organization and not fight any top 205’ers.

by San Jose Rob on May 22, 2009 11:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tito makes a reasonable point for being in the top 10 perhaps. A lot of people consider him a dinosaur, but he did ‘beat’ Rashad, probably gave Machida the biggest scare in his UFC career thusfar, beat Forrest (who has obviously improved a ton, but still), beat Cote, who later got a title shot at MW, and beat Belfort.

Chuck owning him twice made him look a little washed up, but that’s just one guy. Randy, at his best, beat him pretty good, but at least Tito went the distance.

The problem with Tito is that it’s hard for him to finish fights. He’s pretty good at at alot of things but not great at anything, even wrestling. Nevertheless, he’s only about 33. I’d still rate him, hmm…. let’s see:

1. Machida
2. Rampage
3. Rashad
4. Forrest
5. Rua
6. Jardine
7-9. Weight jumpers: Hendo, Wandy, Franklin
10. Maybe Tito

by McArthur on May 22, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dreams Mac, MAYBE Jardine, but imo thats a big maybe. If he could hold Wandi down and go human blanket on him like he did the last time they fought then he might be able to do that to. As far as Hendo goes.. no way in hell, Dan would school his junior college wrestling skills.

by O damn he got caught on May 22, 2009 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t see him beating W. Silva for the same reason Chuck gave him a beatdown. Franklin maybe on size, but Franklin is tough to fight. I thought he won the Hendo fight on strikes, but it was close. I have no interest in seeing Jardine fight anyone. Hendo and Tito would be interesting…but I’m with you, Tito would probably pull that one out.

people need to realize all the things that effect a fighter, the argument earlier saying Tito would lose to Wanderlai for the same reason he lost to Chuck.
You have to remember Wanderlai has a wild style ,where Chuck is a counter striker.Wanderlai has a smaller reach than Chuck, therefore he leaves all kinds of openings to for the takedown(talking about the brawling style),plus the reach means Tito can stay in closer than he did with Chuck.Basically same fight would happen Tito might get caught with a flurry but he will survive to take Wanderlai down and GnP

If Tito had not grabbed at that fence so much, Rashad may have done something significant in that fight?

I jumped forward in time to put Machida at #1.

He’s not only going to win the title, he’s going to school Rashad. After the fight, Machida’s name will start popping up in P4P discussions.

Here’s the deal: Rashad cannot win a stand-up battle with this guy. He will get taken apart. His “big right hand” is not getting anywhere near Machida’s chin. Rashad couldn’t tag Bisping, what makes anyone think he’s getting any real leather on Lyoto?

Rashad’s wrestling is good. I’d says it’s at about the Tito Ortiz level. Did everyone see Tito trying to take down Machida and getting stuffed repeatedly and then taken down himself?

If it does go to the ground, Machida has very solid jits. Rashad only has GnP.

I just can not see a legitimate avenue to victory for Rashad (other than a hail mary right hand), whereas I can easily see Machida tagging him all night before he eventually TKO’s him.

Challenge accepted! Bizbing lost that fight, everyone knows this. Hammill was the victim of the biggest injustice in the history of MMA. Bizbing’s biggest nuthugger couldn’t have thought he won a round. His own mother thought he lost all three rounds. Hammill was lucky he’s deaf that night, he wouldn’t have heard all the boos echoing around the arena when that decision was read out.The biggest travesty in the sports history thus far. A dark day for the UFC!

I prefer Bizbing for three reasons.

1) That’s how everyone pronounces it.
2) It pisses of Bizbing nuthggers.
3) I have so little respect for this overrated bum that I refuse to even spell his name correctly.

And he lost the Hammill fight, we all know this.

Rashad greased against Tito! Greg Jackson’s sneaky little plan against wrestlers and BJJ fighters, Tito said that Rashad felt like he had vaseline on his arms way before BJ said it about GSP. If not for that, Rashad wouldn’t have made it out of the first round.

No worries. I’m a big boy and can take the jabs. I don’t remember Machida going airborne like that. I guess I need to look around a bit online to see the fight again. I thought Tito got the triangle from his back and tried to roll to an armbar but lost it before he would have ended up on his face. I guess it kind of looks like that…

Tito is amongst the most underated fighters in MMA.

He beat Forrest. Get over it Forrest fans…it was 29-28 Tito. Forrest did shit the entire fight except stuff some take-down attempts, get up once after Tito took him down, and make Joe Rogan and Stephan Bonnar orgasm after getting to his feet. None of that “wins” a fight…it may cloud some judgement and win over a few fans, but all he did was almost not lose…not “win”.

He beat Rashad. Hell, even after the “fence grab” that people say cost Rashad a takedown and maybe the round…Rashad still got top position…just to end up in a guillotine and get saved by the bell. It was a different kind fight than the Forrest fight, but it pretty much went down the same way with Rashad not doing anything to “win”…he just tried to not lose.

He looked better against Machida than any of Machida’s other UFC opponents.

Is there a 205er in the UFC (or anywhere else) that Tito wouldn’t beat or at least be very competitive against? Hell no.

Sure he can be competitive with any fighter he just cant win. Now that his back is fixed I am more excited for his new excuses about why he lost rather than who he fights. His best chance to win would be in strikeforce against guys that coudnt cut it in the ufc like whitehead or South-Worthless. He’s proved time and time again that he isn’t a good business man(hell I live in Huntington Beach and I have never seen one person where punishment clothing) He isn’t a good announcer. He isn’t a good Actor. His own book paints him as an idiot as well. His claim to fame was being a champ a decade ago when a one dimensional fighter could win. The guy is like Al Bundy talking about his 4 touchdown game at polk high. He is constantly talking about his past achievements(which are not impressive) We get it Tito you defended your title against a bunch of shit heels. He should be happy he has made as much money as he has off beating up Slamcock. Look at who he has fought. He has never beaten anyone good. The only notable victories he has are over Forrest Split Decision in Forrests third fight. Wanderlei before he was any good 9 years agoo and once again a decision and Belfort when he was a mess because his sister was kidnapped and murdered shockingly again a decision. If you put him against someone good Couture, Liddell, Frank Shamrock(at the time), or Machida he loses. When it comes to top competition he has proven he cant get it done. He has to feud with Dana to get some heat. If you look at his record you will realize he isn’t even close to being an elite fighter. He is a proverbial Gate Keeper for TUF Alumni

WOW he barely beat forrest 3 years ago… And most people think forrest won that fight, no matter what you say a decision is just an someones opinion.. My opinion, forrest won rounds 2 and 3.

Rashad isnt the same fighter now… Since he has sent bisbing to 185, ko’d chuck and tko’d forrest.. That fight wouldnt be as close now.

And he got dominated by machida… Looking better agaist him compared to david heath, Sam Hoger, Kazuhiro Nakamura and Sokoudjou only means he is better than those guys… Which most people would agree with.

and as this ridiculous statement “Is there a 205er in the UFC (or anywhere else) that Tito wouldn’t beat or at least be very competitive against? Hell no.”

Simply yes there are many fighters that tito couldnt beat or wouldnt be competitive against….

Rampage henderson and machida would all own him…. I dont think in rematches with forrest and rashad he would be very competitive… They have improved alot.. tito hasn’t.
Even up and comers like luis cane, brandon vera and jon jones would all probly beat him…

Tito can prove me wrong by comming back to the ufc and fighting some of theese guys… But he wont, he will sign with strikeforce or affliction and keep talking about how he is still a force to be reckoned with! lol

by mike22 on May 22, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I believe Tito would be “very competitive” against any UFC 205lber. He got beat by Machida but was competitive, far more so than Thiago Silva.

I believe he beat Forrest Dump in their first meeting and he’d beat him again, his game hasn’t developed that much. I believe he’s a bad match up for Rashad so would give him another close fight.

Have you seen Vera lately, do you really think he’d beat Ortiz? Same goes for Cane and Bones.

I believe he’d lose to Rampage, no way on earth Hendo would “own” him, but be a close fight.

Dont think its really up to tito if he comes back to the UFC or not, think thats down to Dana “not one to hold a grudge much” White.

If Tito ever came back to the UFC, Jardine would be a good fight for him. Since you pretty much have to put Jardine around 6 or 7 in the division, does anyone think Tito would have a shot at winning that fight? I’d say it would be even money.

Guys he can’t beat: Machida, Rampage, Henderson, Anderson Silva when he is 205, Rua.

Guys he has already ‘beaten’ but would be a slight underdog if they fought again: Rashad, Forrest, Wandy.

Legit LHW’s that he stands a fair chance of beating: Jardine, Franklin, Thiago Silva, Hamill.

Tito is lingering around the top 10. He is still a factor, in fact, more of a factor than he’s been recently now that his kryptonite (Chuck) has retired. He needs a big win over a top LHW in another organization (Babalu?) to give some heft to his claim of being a force to be reckoned with.

by revjames13 on May 22, 2009 2:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it would be a done deal if he fought Jardine and definitely Wanderlei, just look at Tito’s size and wrestling..

Tito only got a draw on his fight Vs. Evans because he was so dumb — after so many years of fighting in the UFC — to grab onto the cage.

Tito almost got a sub on Machida, but he failed to mention that that same “elusive” fighter, that same “hit and run” fighter, busted his face up by the end of the match.

Tito did great things in the past, but the way he artificially pumps himself up in the present is nothing but pathetic. Pretty much all respectable fighters today speak with their PERFORMANCE, and nothing else.

by ARodOfIron on May 22, 2009 3:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That’s very true. Forrest-Rashad-Machida. All the UFC glory boys have experienced the Bad Boy.

Tito bragging about a guy he almost beat is priceless. HEY TITO– You dont get to brag about a submission that you didnt pull off. In fact, thats a sign of failure, not success.

That’s like saying that I almost became president but I didnt run for office.

Tito and Tito fans, STOP TRYING TO SAY THAT YOU ALMOST BEAT MACHIDA. You didnt….end of story.

by Striker Dave on May 22, 2009 3:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Who would of ever expected to Tito nearly get a SUBMISSION victory? Not me and probably not even your dumbass lol. Case proven.

by xxBAxx816 on May 22, 2009 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He matched up really well with Rashad in that fight. Matched up terribly with Machida, and the almost submission comment is silly.

But yeah, he can still compete for sure. He won’t win, but compete he most certainly can. I’d love a re-match with Forrest.

by Dave on May 22, 2009 4:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont agree with him beating rashad. If u watch the fight tito held the fence twice preventing a takedown both times. I think one was in the 1st and the 2nd time was in the 2nd. If rashad would of got him down i think he would of held him down and won the round. So even though he got docked a point tito did win the round because he got the takedown after that. But rashad would of got the takedown both times and would of won the 2nd round at least. So rashad instead of winning the fight 29 28 because he won the third he had a draw so tito cheating favored tito.

by desperus on May 22, 2009 4:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Like watching both fighters, their fight records is very impressive and speaks for itself. When you look at the fighters they have beaten it’s gard to pick a loser but i’m gonna have to say Machida I think he is going to be very hard hit or take him down.So best of luck to both fighters. It should be a great night yeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaa!!!!!!!!!!!!

by cliff on May 22, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What is Tito talking about? It was an obvious draw in the Evans fight… If he wanted to win he shouldnt have tried cheating so many times.. Grabbing the fence is cheating you so called MMA expert! You fucking big headed dumb fuck… dont grab the fence like 20 times in the fight and no expect to get docked a point… and it was probably more like 21 times he grabbed the fence trying to get the advantage on Evans… cheater!

And Machita just raped him so Idk what he’s talkin about… He re-arranged his face badly…

Tito.. Please retire… we all hate you :D

by Tom on May 22, 2009 7:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve watched the fight about 10 times closely and he grabs the fence only two times in the 2nd round and that’s it! Rashad grabs it too…

by RoB on May 23, 2009 1:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Tito talked the game but he was another example of a fighter who didn’t really evolve with the sport. Pretty much all he had was GNP. His shoots were probably the most telegraphed of all time.

He deserves credit for helping the popularity of MMA and he did fight most of the big names but definitely a legend in his own mind.

I think Ortiz is still a good fighter, but his mouth seems to keep him in the heat. Anywase, I think that Evans should’ve lost that fight against Ortiz, but Ortiz did get warned several times, so the deducted point was his mistake. Almost submitting Machida, I DON’T THINK SO! Machida will be the new champ.
