UFC Quick Quote: Sean Sherk would like to see Shinya Aoki take off his pants

"There are guys ranked above me, that I've seen, that I know damn well I can beat. Rankings don't mean squat. (Shinya) Aoki is a good example. He's a big 155 pounder but he's got no boxing, no wrestling. Where does that leave you in the UFC? You can't wear pants, so guess what? You're in some trouble. I'd like to see a lot of those guys come here and I think eventually they will."
Former UFC Lightweight Champion Sean Sherk tells Cagewriter that he's bewildered at Bloody Elbow's (and other media's) current ranking system that puts Japanses star Shinya Aoki and UFC rival Kenny Florian -- who Sherk beat at UFC 64 -- ahead of him in the polls. "The Muscle Shark" is 33-3-1 and his only loss at lightweight came to BJ Penn at UFC 84 in May 2008. Perhaps the steroid debacle from his fight with Hermes Franca at UFC 73 still carries wieght int the court of public opinion? Where do you rank Sherk? Make your case.

I bag on Sherk all the time, and am in no way a fan, that said, look at his losses! GSP, Hughes and Penn! Come on, obviously he’s top 5 at 155!
Go lay on Frankie sean!

i would put him at #2 in the ufc, and in the top 5 no problem outside of it.

The only real question I have to ask is what kind of fans visit BE? Seriously look all the way down this forum and all the people here agree that Sherk is at #2 or #3 top LW… so whats that saying about the fans who voted him lower on the polls? Do they even know anything about the sport they are watching or do they just vote based on pretty faces and favorite fighters. Thats weak and its a strong reason I don’t visit those other sites.

I think Florian could take Sherk in a rematch. That said, Sherk is definitely top 5. Aoki would have a hell of a time submitting Sherk, I see him getting thrown around the cage for most of the fight.
I’d like to see Sherk against Diego or Kenny again.

For sure Aoki wouldn’t be able,to do anything against Sherk.Kind of,like what happen against Sakurai…
Look to what KIZER said about Aoki’s pants and the greasing!

So how do you determine that the standard shorts provide equality for all fighters. The difference in Kizers comparrison is that the other sports all the athletes are competing using the same skill sets, in MMA there are many different aspects of the game and many different advantages provided in terms of clothing or lack there of. People need to stop throwing out references to other sports like they apply to MMA.

Aoki with pants is like Sherk with roids.

Yeah i mean i am a fan of Aoki but i think Sherk would be too powerfull for him, don’t care how good Aoki is off his back.
That is if it even got the the floor i mean if they were to fight i could see Sherk using his wrestling base to keep it upright and beat the sh*t out of him standing.
Either way, sherk wins IMO.

Maybe I’m wrong here, but what do the pants have to do with winning fights? And I’d rank Sherk at #2 or #3, it’s ludicrous not to, the guy only ever lost to Hughes, St. Pierre and Bj Penn; 1 hall of famer, and two of the best p4p fighters on the planet. Thats not a bad resume at all and imo Sherk would own Aoki

and there’s nothing wrong with that imo. they are also pouring water all over the guy between rounds which favors the non submission grapplers. it’s not more fair. in fact a guy could wear a gi for all I care, most don’t because it’s a disadvantage

I have to agree. His only career losses are to the best WW in the world (GSP), the most dominate WW in UFC history (Hughes), and the most naturally gifted and best LW in the world (BJ). Ranking don’t mean jack once the cage door closes…

Sherk is ranked 3 by mma elo, where Florian is #1 and Aoki is #4, but both Aoki and Sherk (and Penn) have fights outside of the lightweight division counted.
anyway, in a matchup with Sherk I don’t think the lack of wrestling matters too much because Aoki has very good judo takedowns as well as flying guard pulls, has a huge reach advantage over Sherk and does well from the bottom.
Sherk also only seems to finish B level competition. Aoki is just as good as Sherk at smothering guys but he also wins points with submission attempts. It would be closer than some would think imo

You know that because of the really stringent testing they do in Japan.
by PW on May 21, 2009 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Please, look at the Japanese fighters. It’s obvious they dont do roids. Implying that they squeeze by testing in Japan is ridiculous. Bottom line is , Sherk is a boring fighter that cant finish with a sub or knockout! Thats why he will never be a top 5 Fighter and if rankings were not important why would Sherk be crying about his rank…
by chrisTX on May 21, 2009 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ll grant you the boring fighter point. He hasn’t won by stoppage since 2005 and hasn’t won a UFC fight by stoppage since 2002. However, your grossly misinformed point about Japanese fighters no juicing is ridiculous. Just because they aren’t huge and ripped doesn’t mean they aren’t juicing. There is no testing over there and it’s probably a big reason why fighters who spend the majority of their careers in Japan struggle in America.

Hey maniacs
I got a question for any of you who have been to a previous event. I paid 400 for section 102 row 23. People on here have been saying they paid much less, but for different sections. I called wachovia and asked why and their response was "well you’re int he middle section so you will have the best view of it. ITS AN OCTAGON!! isnt every view the same? or is she right, where I am sitting will be the best view? please help me out here. I am a little aggravated I paid that much for where I am.thanks
by charr552 on May 21, 2009 12:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Have you ever been to a hockey game? Imagine there is a fight at center ice, who do you think has the best view? The guys behind the benches at center like you, or the people behind the nets like everyone else? Trust me you got better seats. I went to both of the Montreal events and anything near center ice is great.

thanks man. Relieves some of the stress from the day.
by charr552 on May 21, 2009 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think this is truly a fair comparison either. Your view is drastically different at a hockey game behind the nets compared to center ice. Your view is not drastically different at a fight, only the distance that you are from the action.
by YouveGotGold on May 21, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s what I mean. It isn’t like there is anything blocking your view. But row 1 behind the bench is a lot closer to the Octagon then row 1 behind the net is.
by jay on May 21, 2009 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jay is right. I went to UFC 83. I got a pair “behind the net” and I got a pair for my brother close to “Center ice”. We both took our fiance’s and I watched a couple of fights with my brother, my brother had a better view. He was 2 rows back compared to me as well. I knew my seats would be a little farther back, but to me the price difference isn’t worth it.
by Shadyone33 on May 21, 2009 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let me explain:
Wachovia is designed primarily for hockey (flyers), so yes, the center will have the best view of the Octagon. You’ll be closer to the action in the center than you would be if you were at the same level behind where the hockey goals typically would be. The corners can be among the worst places to be in the upper levels because they use large screens that block out some sections (they don’t sell tickets behind the screens, don’t worry). Additionally, some corners are angled so that if you sit straight in your chair, you’re not viewing the fights head on. So yes, the center would be the best section, but how much better varies based on the set-up of the arena.
by YouveGotGold on May 21, 2009 1:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Charr – - – HERE IS THE REAL DEAL.
Every UCF event that I’ve been to – 49, 59, 64, 72, 84 – goes like this…yes there is an octogon and if you are the same distance from the octogon then yes every view is the same (there are no screens and whatnot blocking your view). However, here is what happens when you take an elongated (strected out) oval like a hockey rink and place an octogon at center ice – the UFC puts chairs for floor seating until they get to the actual stands. So if you are in the stands then Row 5 behind the bench is like 40’ from the octogon, where as Row 5 behind the hockey goal is about 100’ from the octogon…I learned this the hard way at UFC 49 in which I had Row 23 seats however there were about 75 rows of floor seats in front of me because I was on the long side of the oval, where as the short side of the oval had about 15 rows of floor seats. Being in the stands is key to my point, if you have floor seats then every respective row is the same distance from the cage…it’s just that there’s more rows from the cage to the hockey goal, i.e. floor seating row 30 doesn’t exist between the cage and the hockey bench but it does between the side of the cage and the hockey goal.
by Greg on May 21, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
dude im telling you if you dont like your seats – just wait till the event has started and as your walking about for example to get autographs in between fights or whatever if security allows you to do so – then just simply take an empty seat with the best view posssible. i have done this twice and although im sure security in ireland ws pretty shiite – i got to sit like 2 seats away from dana white, rich franklin’s wife, allastair overeem and load of other guys – they were literally 2 seats in front of me! (this was ufc93 in dublin) :D

Sherk’s a very well rounded fighter; maybe the only thing you could knock him on would be the submission game, but how often does he get subbed? Hell how often does Sherk even lose a fight? The guys stand up is decent; to say his striking is “horrible” is a gross exaggeration. Don’t let the blind hate for the guy skew your perception on his talent, Sherk is a top LW for sure.

Sherk’s stand-up striking isn’t horrible, you’re right, but it’s not good, either. The only time he shines in striking is when facing an opponent who’s worse than him at stand-up striking.
I think it’s totally fair to knock his striking. He’s got the technical aspects down, but anyone can accomplish that.
by clayton on May 21, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No BJJ? Sherk is easily black-belt level. It’s just more based on position and top control rather than actively looking for submissions.
He repeatedly passed the guard of Hermes Franca like it was nothing, getting full-mount many times, did the same thing to Florian, and absolutely controlled Nick Diaz on the ground, even though he was fighting in a less-than-optimal weight class.
By saying he has “horrible standup and no bjj” makes it clear that Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin was probably the first time you saw him fight, and likely the first UFC event you’ve seen as well.

If Sherk doesn’t pwn Edgar, then where does this leave Maynard in the rankings? Would your rankings of Maynard change based on the outcome of this fight considering what Maynard was able to do to Edgar?
by BulletproofTiger on May 21, 2009 1:31 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
He’s right in that the rankings are always going to have some awkward placements, but that’s the nature of ranking a sport in which so many of the fighters fight each other at different stages in their careers.
However, I think Aoki would beat shark. Sherk is more or less a perfect target for Aoki. Sherk is cumbersome, if not slow, is much more natural on the ground than in his stand-up, and is horribly predictable in all aspects of his game. Aoki would win by triangle choke in the first round as often as not.
by clayton on May 21, 2009 1:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
So basically Sherk is saying that Aoki would sub him if he wore his pants.
My top five LW’s….
1. Aoki
2. Penn
3. Alvarez
4. Kawajiri
4. Jansen
Call me a cynic, but if a guy gets caught juicing he doesn’t jump up in ranking by going 1-1 in a year in a half after he got caught, with his only victory being against a top 20 fighter at best (Tyson Griffin).
Back of the bus, “Muscle Shark”.

OK introvert, but he doesn’t jump out of the top 5 either, with his only loss coming to the best LW in the world.
Alvarez, Aoki, Hansen and Kawajiri over Florian and Sherk? It would be great to see those guys in the UFC so we can find out… but I’m thinking if those guys all fought your rankings would be very different.
by Jeremyjackson on May 21, 2009 2:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
So you think a guy can retain his ranking for how long after being busted? 6 months? 1 year? 2 years?
Screw that. Look at Barnett…he was pretty much at the top of the food chain (sans Fedor) when he got busted…took him years to climb back up. Why should Sherk be given a pass?
by introvert on May 21, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s not being given a “pass”.
He’s just not being dropped out of the top 5 in favor of guys he could beat, because of a failed drug test. Once again his only loss was to Penn, at the time the consensus #1 LW in the world . Sherk was the UFC champion before that fight, and also has a victory over the current #1 contender.
I think you’re letting your apparent dislike for Sherk cloud your logic. I’m not a fan of his either, and I can’t stand juicers. But Sherk has to be beaten by someone other than Penn before he drops out of the top five.

I have to say Sherk is #2 at lightweight in the world. The lightweight rankings are some of the worst out of all the rankings. Most of the UFC’s top lightweights would kill the other ranked guys at lightweight outside of the organization. I don’t understand why they still put guys that fight in Japan ahead of the UFC guys. Didn’t the Pride fall prove anything when all those guys came to the UFC and got beat all over the place? Very few pride guys looked good in the UFC. Someone will beat Gray Maynard eventually, but that does not take anything away from him. Sherk will beat Edgar. Styles make match ups but 1 random loss doesn’t change who you are. Guys like Tyson Griffin and Frankie Edgar are in need of being beat in close fights by top guys in the world to make them feel like they belong with them.

Oh I see, so a former “Fighter from Japan” is only a former “fighter from Japan” if…
a) …he has a losing record in the UFC.
or
b) …he doesn’t have a belt in the UFC.
or
c) …he isn’t on anyone’s P4P or Top 10 lists.
or
d) …a UFC fanboy can say he is no longer a “fighter from Japan”, because he has been in the UFC for 6 months (if he is winning)…but the guy that is losing after 2 years is a “Japan” guy.
LMFAO
I still consider guys that fought in Shooto, Pride, K-1 to be from Japanese orginizations….at least I’m consistant. You guys only admit a guys from Pride if he loses.
