Calling all Maniacs! Time to weigh-in with initial impressions of 'UFC Undisputed 2009' video game

After much anticipation and a seemingly endless trickle of video teases, 'UFC Undisputed 2009' is finally in the hands of fans and gamers. It’s the first video game for the promotion since Ultimate Fighting Championship: "Sudden Impact" back in 2004 — five very long years.

Now that the wait is over, let's start getting some of those initial impressions. Love it? Hate it? Somewhere in between? Let's hear what you think. And for the UK fans who are still a few days away from release, I expect you back here on May 22 to join in the fun.

Sound off, Maniacs.

My girlfriend makes me press A to fast forward past the ring girls. My initial impression is that’s bullshit!

Love the game though. No complaints.

They gave this video game ring girl breat implants. Way to go techy nerds.

IS THJIS TRUE???
I read this quote about the UFC game while playing as cro cop. if true it’s pretty cool.
.
Rogan: His kicks are the heaviest in MMA.
Goldie: Once known as the baddest man on the planet.
Rogan: (interrupts) Actually that title was up for grabs when he and Fedor met in the ring and Fedor beat him earning that title.

I’m undefeated online in the LW division. 8-0 with Sean Sherk. Guy is a beast. I’ve never played as GSP, and only once as Anderson. I like to use (LW)- Sherk/Tyson, (WW) Hughes, Kos, (MW) Rich, (LHW) Hendo/Forrest/Jardine, (HW) AA, Cro Cop

by Synyster_08 on May 19, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

how realistic is it? are you laying on guys and getting decisions?

by kevin on May 19, 2009 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Synester, I have had alot of luck at HW as Mir. I like the way Arlovski has a glass jaw

by tony on May 20, 2009 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions

You can burn time laying and praying if you keep transitioning.

by rockwell on May 20, 2009 12:22 AM EDT up reply actions

lol Kevin. I’ve said a bunch of times you got to take in “anything in MMA can happen” when playing this game. If Bisping can submit Demian Maia, then Sherk can finish a fight. Online, I was submitted by Bisping as Maia. I was pissed.

Tony- I dont play HW alot, mostly LW and WW. I try not to be the best guy in the division either. Its funny though, out of 43 wins online, 20 of them must have been wins over BJ, so its not like the highest rated fighter always wins.

This game is incredible. Career mode is fun and not particularly easy. Online multi is fun but does have its lag problems from time to time. I’m also quite tired of EVERYONE being a bunch of pansies and using GSP and Anderson Silva every single fight.

by jclorley on May 19, 2009 6:45 PM EDT reply actions

only other complaints I have is that there is no actual cage work during the fights, there is only a limited number of fighters in the career mode and I kept having to fight the same guys over and over, also, the training and sparring is somewhat limited……Don’t take these the wrong way though, this game is ridiculously awesome.

by jclorley on May 19, 2009 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions

AGREED
everyone is either GSP or Silva, and obvious matchups are Hendo and BJ…i hate how when your fighter is tired it is super hard to get the hell out of there, instead of having to take blows from your opponent..no ducking is tough as well..

by tony on May 20, 2009 12:12 AM EDT up reply actions

I totally agree too many people take GSP or Anderson. But it is pretty freakin sweet to expose the beginners picking the guys they know but havn’t properly learned the game yet. Ground and pounded GSP w/ Matt Serra for a 2nd round TKO, too much fun!

by Pansy McBear on May 20, 2009 1:11 AM EDT up reply actions

Amen to that. I hate to hear d-bags talkin crap when they get A. Silva because Silva is pretty hard to beat and pretty easy to get a win. I have better luck beating GSP.

by newfie on May 19, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions

If you have a usb stick you can upload music and stuff using the slot under the power button. If you have music or movies on a disk just put it in and go to the settings section and just rip it. You can also use the usb port to directly connect to your pc using the Xbox to PC option in the settings. You can rip movies and games the same way.

by MMAGreen on May 20, 2009 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

the game is great. aside from a few details the gmaeplay is a nice representation of real mma. the ground game is something to appreciate. you just have to learn it, which takes a lot of time.

i have a few questions about it tho..
do the champions that you set in exhibition mode stick throughout gameplay?
how do you escape from the clinch when being clinched?

by masters on May 19, 2009 9:44 PM EDT reply actions

the champions change throughout career mode. Escaping from the clinch is tough, its easier to just shoot or cover up. i hit right high bumper and rotate the right thumbstick. I strongly suggest the tutorial

by tony on May 20, 2009 12:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I tried the tutorial a few times, but the clinch one focuses more on takedowns. i've started just shooting to escape it.

by masters on May 20, 2009 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

my question about champions is during exhibition play. if i set a fight to a five rounder it automatically puts the belt on the line, but at the end no matter the result bruce buffer says “and the new” champion. so they must not stick in exhibition?

by masters on May 20, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Game is bad as hell, in a good way tho

by Tyson Harris on May 19, 2009 9:50 PM EDT reply actions

9-2 in career mode, got KTFO by Maynard and Florian (rematch). Badass so far, Cro Cop kicks fucking ass.

by HKM on May 19, 2009 9:58 PM EDT reply actions

Even with some of its flaws, this game is great. I forsee UFC 2010 being a lot better and prolly sports game of the year. I haven’t played online yet, but will soon. Career mode is fun for the most part and a lot harder than the demo made it out to be. Once you work your guy up to fighting top 10 fighters you have to use a little bit more strategy instead of standing and banging like you could with the bottom of the pile.

by MMArk on May 19, 2009 10:13 PM EDT reply actions

so far im 9-0 in career, havent tried online yet. just ko’d tito in the 2nd round. dana would love me

I F’ing love this game! I wish I had more time to play it but stupid work gets in the way. So far I’m 4-0 in career mode, and I’m about to fight Anthony Johnson. I haven’t tried it online yet but I will. In an exhibition fight, I used Cro-Cop and I got Ko’d twice by Justin McCully! Lmao…poor Mirko.

Right behind Machida, but they’ll clash someday once jones is older, then I think Jones will hold the title for a long time. But is he in the game? Love u guys, ur comments are all usually awesome.

this game is simply amazing. Yeah, there’s little things wrong, but its minor stuff and the realism is unparalleled. I earned a title shot at 13-3, beat Hendo, then got flash ko’d by Franklin and lost it. Ive waited 2 years for this game and it exceeds my expectations.

rankings change as gameplay goes on.

by rockwell on May 20, 2009 12:15 AM EDT up reply actions

Game is sick. Only issue I have is that out of nowhere it gets difficult. I think after I went 11-0 the competition got ridiculous. Marcus Davis (ranked 2), Matt Hughes (ranked 4), and Matt Serra (ranked 5) rick rolled me. It was pretty unreal how sick Davis’ sprawl was, Matt Hughes apparently has sick boxing, and even though Serra has never displayed sick jiu jitsu in the octagon, the guy is a mounting/rubber guard sweep machine

Don’t pick judo, I thought it was gonna be exciting with all the throws and all, but it’s basically just trip takedowns. Everyonce in a while you get a hip throw, but it’s rare.

by rockwell on May 20, 2009 12:15 AM EDT reply actions

The game is fucking MMA fan nirvana. I’m going to go do some more career mode, but don’t worry I’ll be online soon enough to kick everyone’s asses.

by markie on May 20, 2009 1:03 AM EDT reply actions

Listen…This game is EASILY the best fighting game ever created. The amount of detail and precision that was put into this game is unfing believable! Geez…where do I even start?

Well, for starters, the gameplay controls are VERY well done. Whether you want to strike or take it to the ground, the controls are easy to pick up and perfectly simulate MMA. .

The fighter animations look basically identical to there real-life counterparts. I’ve never played a game that looks as realistic as this one. The online multiplayer is fun as hell! The practice mode is also super deep and gives you tons of options of how you want to train your fighter. I haven’t even tried career mode, but I’m sure its amazing.

I’m currently 11-7 in Xbox Live, but enjoyed every fight. There is so much strategy involved in this game and if you make one mistake – you can easily lose. But man, it is sooo satisfying when you beat someone’s ass! lol

Maniacs – Seriously, THQ has done it. They have hit a grand slam with this game. UFC 2009 Undisputed is THE videogame to have if you’re an MMA fan. Period.

Anyone on here that wants to nitpick at minor flaws is out of there mind. Get the game NOW…You will be blown away!!!!!!!!!!

by PanicZoo on May 21, 2009 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I have 3 questions:

1) Is there going to be downloadable roster updates/new characters/fan made stuff?

2) Will there ever be a version for PC? (I know right?)

3) Is Machida impossible to hit in the game when you fight against him?

Question #3 is just me wondering if they capture the kind of fighter they are individually, or just are using a general Karate/Jiu-Jitsu type system.

by DirtyML on May 20, 2009 1:48 AM EDT reply actions

I’m 22-3 and have defened the LW title multiple times already

by Alan on May 20, 2009 2:02 AM EDT reply actions

I’ve just finished playing 6 hours with a few friends, and the game is definitely fun. There are few things that felt a bit off though like kicks take a lot of priority(you have to learn to take them down) and an unrealistic amount will be thrown. I know kicks have more power than punches, but it sometimes feels like two hits can’t happen at the same time so the kick will land but not the punch. It’s a bit weird to explain and playing online with better comp could help out too. The movement is a bit stiff as well, and the atmosphere of UFC events wasn’t captured that well. Rogan and Goldie get boring and annoying fast but streaming music will solve that problem. Everything else though is great. They really set a solid foundation for future MMA games.

by closb on May 20, 2009 2:23 AM EDT reply actions

Love the game but have a few complaints. Why don’t the fighters age during career mode? I’m two years in and my guy is still same age. What’s up with not everyone having a head kick? I don’t think muay thai fighters have head kicks. And there is too many one punch knockouts for my liking. But all these are minor details, and I’m addicted to the game.

by Question on May 20, 2009 3:10 AM EDT reply actions

My honest review…
not bad for the first go-around.
I give it a grade of : B+
Why B+? because it’s missing some crucial elements…

I expect next UFC game to answer these questions.

1. Where in hell are the entrance walk-ins?!?!?
(It’s freaking THQ, they made wrestling games, so they know walk ins are as every bit as important as everything else. I FREAKING NEED SILVA’S SANDSTORM!!! heh)

2. Where in hell is the cage usage? push them to the cage, wall walks. etc.

3. need fighter interviews after wins (no matter how generic it may sound, it adds to the realism.)

that is all…
otherwise good game.

by BALCO on May 20, 2009 3:34 AM EDT reply actions

If they spend time on interviews and walk-ins I’m going to be pissed. That is stuff that any normal person would just skip through anyways.

by ProCannonFodder on May 20, 2009 4:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I prefer the stronger hooks and uppercuts over the head kick. BTW to head kick with a not-boxer, hold the left shoulder button and throw a kick. Muay Thai fighters can throw flying knees from long distance with the same button combination.

I got robbed in a decision. I fought as Big Nog against Kongo. I took him down probably 20 times and peppered him with two or three jabs before each take down. Kongo did almost nothing besides escape my submissions as it is extremely difficult (THQ: IT’S TOO DIFFICULT) to pull off a submission. Kongo won with a unanimous decision. I think the game is a geared toward striking and knockouts a little too much. All that said, don’t think that I don’t love the game. It’s hella fun and is generally worth the wait endured. If THQ stays in business, the 2010 update should be nothing short of fantastic.

by Fidel Cashflow on May 20, 2009 9:49 AM EDT reply actions

Tito Ortiz is the best fighter in the game. Use hime and you wont lose.

by Johnny_Clinch on May 20, 2009 10:34 AM EDT reply actions

The game is friggin awesome! said it before and ill say it agian, Cain is a beast at heavy! Ive ost only once with him in like 15 matches at heavy. Crocop is another animal, he moves and punches fast and is as fast as lightweight!!! The ground game is sick, the only thing i cant seem to pull off is the rear naked, i got the gullotine, armbar, kimura, triangle (my fave) and a kneebar. I love how when someone is standing over you, you can transition into a knee bar from the ground to the standing opponent and love the flying armbar! I especially like the fact the KO’s are harder to come by, as was not the case in the demo!

Since i dont have my online setup yet, me and my bro and nmy friends have system to where we have a title fight and if you win the title fight, your the champ and no one can pick your fighter untill they defeat you in a title fight. In order to earn the right to fight agaisnt the champ, you must win a #1 contender fight againt the person who has the title. However, The challenger uses the fighter he wants to challenge for the title, and the champ chooses another fighter to control, not the one he has the title with. If he beats me, then he earned the right to fight my champ! Its a good system and i like it because it makes it more entertaining and the champ stays the champ and cant be used by anyone else other than you, until he is defeated.ANd you can only use your Champ in title fights, not #1 contender fights to defend your status. So if someone is dying to control and play with Cain Velasquez, they have to defeat me in order to be able to play him since I am the champ with him! We only keep records of the champs in title defenses.
So far, i have 3 of 5 titles.

Heavy : Cain Velasquez
MiddleWeight: Nate Marquardt
LightWeight: Huerta

I had the Welter with ALves, but my bro took it from as GSP. He also holds the LightHeavy with Wanderlie, i cant seem to defeat Wanderlie, his ground game is very strong! anyway…..thats the wy we make it intersting and it sure makes the time fly!!!

Jajaj basically, but you have to PUSH the RSB in to get the sub, then ya whoever twirls the stick faster usually gets the sub or the escape….

Ok I was just wondering if you can pick a UFC fighter to play with in CAREER MODE or do you have to create one??

The game is sweet. I f i could change something it would be that players would be able to build up their stats for career mode by training and sparring faster or before they even fight. I am 22 and 3 and defended the title 12 consecutive times but my overall stats for my created fighter is 51!! Or even like the old nba games where you could create a player and max his stats right off the bat. i mean if its as real as it gets any real fighter hoping to fight at the ufc is gonna prepare themselves to the best level they can I understand some fighters are better than others no matter what but when it comes to strength and stamina any new fighter could and would have it higher than 51 before they stepped into the cage

This game is awesome on 360 but keeps freezing on ps3. Thq, please fix it.

Jon Jones isn’t in the game, wish he was. I think he’s the next great lhw.

the game is great. Just a few minor flaws:

Jardine’s beard is not long enough.

Bruce Buffer’s announcing is way off. When he says phrases as if it is the last word in a sentence but he is right in the middle of announcing.

Jardine’s style is nothing like his real style.

GSP doesn’t grab his nipples or use vaseline.
