UFC Quick Quote: Sean Sherk ready for Frankie Edgar in 3D

"I think he’s pretty well-rounded. He has a great wrestling background, [and] his striking looks good. Every time I’ve seen him fight, he looks comfortable on his feet. I think he’s a purple belt in jiu-jitsu. I think he’s pretty well-versed. I don’t know how this fight is going to turn out. It could turn into a wrestling match or a boxing match. That has yet to be seen. I think you’ll see a lot of everything in this one. That’s the way it is with everybody in this industry now, especially at the high level. Everyone is three-dimensional now. You never know how it’s going to go until you get in there and start mixing it up. I think my fight with Frankie is going to be real exciting. I think -- assuming I do pull the win off in two fast-paced, exciting fights -- that the fans would be excited for Penn and Sherk 2."
-- Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk tells Sherdog.com that he anticipates a very stiff test at UFC 98: "Evans vs. Machida" in the form of lightweight standout Frank Edgar. A win could put him in line for a title shot against either BJ Penn or Kenny Florian following their championship bout at UFC 101 in August. Sherk coughed up the 155-pound strap in 2007 following a controversial drug test by the California State Athletic Commission that pegged him as a steroid user. Either way, it’s a rematch for "The Muscle Shark." The question is, who would you rather see — Sherk vs. "The Prodigy" or Sherk vs. "KenFlo?"

Even though it could be boring (to some), I would like to see Sherk vs. Maynard. Maynard was much bigger than Frankie but that advantage wouldn’t have such a big impact on Sherk. It would be interesting.

Ya I agree with you. I actually was hoping, after the win against Griffin, that Sherk would face Maynard for next contender after Florian. I think this fight and a possible Maynard fight would be awesome because most of the time, wrestler vs. wrestler ends up being a striking match, if not it ends up being a fast paced up and down fight..
by Jon on May 18, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions
Indeed.
Pity he’s on the same team as Griffin too, because that would be a huge back-and-forth fight.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions
I’d like to see Sherk Florian 2 first. Whether Florian wins against Penn or not. That will be a better fight than Penn v Sherk again.
by Crowls on May 18, 2009 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah ive been thinking the same thing. after this fight Dana should definatly set up a Maynard-Sherk fight. I think Maynard has a great chance against Sherk. So does Edgar, this fight is giong to be sweet.

Those are some bad @ss shades though, where can I get those?
by O damn he got caught on May 18, 2009 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions
Let’s see, Sherk got schooled by Penn in their first fight and BJ Penn has become the all-time douche bag of the sport. NOPE, I’m not at all excited to see Penn/Sherk II.
by BigRedOne on May 18, 2009 10:20 AM EDT reply actions
First fight with BJ was entertaining and I wouldn’t mind seeing a 2nd, but thats assuming Penn gets through Florian (and imo he will). Otherwise a Florian vs Sherk rematch would be good as well if Kenny pulls off the upset.
by O damn he got caught on May 18, 2009 10:24 AM EDT reply actions
what about Diego? the whole point of him at LW is a fight with Penn!
by kevin on May 18, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions
No doubt its a win win block buster for Sherk. I think the fans should be eager to see Sherk come into any fight, he’s no slouch ever and he keeps coming forward. I don’t think a lot of people remember how exciting the Florian and Franca fights were not to mention all the fights he’s been in since he’s been back. Sherk is more exciting lately than people give him credit for.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 18, 2009 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions
I agree. People are way too harsh on him.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree! I’m way too harsh, look at who he’s lost to! I get your points, I’m just not a fan!
by kevin on May 18, 2009 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions
Is it the steroid thing? Or did you hate him beforehand? But then, it might be the wrestling thing, same as you don’t like Maynard. It’s fair enough to not like them for the reasons you believe though. I’m not a huge fan of Sherk, but I like him. I still would want Penn to beat him again though and Penn is the drama queen of the sport.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 11:33 PM EDT up reply actions
let me guess, sherk is gonna try to box for 2 minutes, then take him down.
by kevin on May 18, 2009 10:26 AM EDT reply actions
oh, and Sean, get in line before you start saying what the fans want. I’ll take
Penn/Sanchez
Penn/Hughes 3
Penn/anyone but Sean Sherk
before I’d even put you in the list!
by kevin on May 18, 2009 10:36 AM EDT up reply actions
Hughes and Sherk fought at WW, I’m assuming he means they’d fight at WW again.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 18, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Im sure he meant at 170 like their last two fights.
by belfort_fan on May 18, 2009 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I agree. Penn/Sanchez would be something interesting.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 10:57 AM EDT up reply actions
Wow man your a total hater here. Sherk would waste Sanchez! nuff said
by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 18, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions
lol, I’d bet Sanchez all day long!
Bennie Blanco, when has Penn/Hughes, 1 or 2 been at 55? thats almost as assinine a statement as the guy who said why has Kimbo fought in the UFC, in the Dr. Phil thread!
by kevin on May 18, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
Lol that Kimbo comment was hilarious. Anyway I’m looking forward to the LW division for my boy Sherk. He’s got three or four great fights ahead of him if he plays his cards right.
Diego
Maynard
Florian 2
Penn 2
(in order of which I’m most interested in) but I’ll take you in that bet, I’m confident Sherk would beat Diego but not confident at all that he could finish him.

by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
I would much rather see Diego get his shot before Sherk. BJ vs Diego seems like it has the potential to be fight of the year.
by BNF on May 18, 2009 10:37 AM EDT reply actions
did you cut and paste that from one of my comments last week? I agree 100% BNF! Although Diego may think he can stand with Penn and end up KO’d! Those are two of my favorite fighters, and definitely has fight of the year possibilities!
by kevin on May 18, 2009 10:41 AM EDT up reply actions
agreed, Diego is more intriguing and seems more deserving. Fought very well against 170s for a while, only loses to wrestlers
by Bennie Blanco on May 18, 2009 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m going to stop you right here, Diego is not more deserving but he is more interesting. I hope most people will agree but Sherk’s only losses come to GSP, Hughes, and Penn… he’s pretty much wiped the floor with any LW they send his way and he already has a win over the current Number one contender. Diego would be much more interesting and this is why they won’t allow Diego and Sherk to fight… cause it’ll kill one blockbuster regardless. Better to see if Diego or Sherk or even Florian can take the belt from Penn and then have them fight afterwards. LW has about four or five real legitmate contenders but the match ups are very interesting no matter which way you go with it. I wish Penn wasn’t such a crappy title holder (not in terms of skill) or else the UFC could be generating some serious interest in the lighter weight classes.
by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 18, 2009 2:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Also, a Sanchez/Florian fight has to come up some time surely. Florian would go in as the favorite this time.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 11:04 AM EDT up reply actions
That fight would definitely play out differently the 2nd time around, but I still think Diego would be the favorite even if Kenny was holding the belt.
by BNF on May 18, 2009 11:16 AM EDT up reply actions
I would love to see a Florian-Sanchez rematch at 155!
by belfort_fan on May 18, 2009 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions
last fight? Watch Sherk vs GSP, even back then he was striking and holding his own. Not sure why people think Sherk is 1 dimensional, maybe just haters I’m guessing.
by O damn he got caught on May 18, 2009 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions
you forgot to add the, “he was being striked on” he wasn’t really striking.
by Bennie Blanco on May 18, 2009 11:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Don’t know what fight you saw, he landed plenty of shots for giving up so much reach. He definatley held his own until the GnP. Like I said, the guys that rag on him are just haters…
by O damn he got caught on May 18, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions
i must have watched the same fight as blanco.my favorite sherk fight was gsp breaking his(sherks) nose against the cage in ground and pound and sherk screaming like a little girl.
by hddavidson on May 18, 2009 1:12 PM EDT up reply actions
he even has to put on 3D glasses to fix the 1 dimensional problem..ahahaa..ugh he is a muscle shark, but let’s hope this is a good one..for his sake!

Sherk vs. Penn II wouldn’t have near the hype behind it, you know cause Florian is gonna be champ.
by Dragon on May 18, 2009 11:34 AM EDT reply actions
lol, Florian can’t beat BJ. No matter how much we don’t like BJ, lets be honest
by Bennie Blanco on May 18, 2009 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions
true comment bennie, no one at 55 can beat BJ. if you think otherwise, you’re nuts!
by kevin on May 18, 2009 11:54 AM EDT up reply actions
i think diego could beat BJ, and as much as i like Kenflo his BJJ isnt good enough to match BJ and BJ has it in striking too
by irishlilpete on May 18, 2009 12:42 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think his BJJ is as good as BJs but it’s good enough to avoid being subbed and even try a few sub attempts of his own
And KenFlo’s striking is up there with BJs. All very calculated and precise
by IrishKev on May 18, 2009 2:14 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m almost assuming Kenflo is going to keep this one standing with BJ. I think he’s going to make this fight boring unfortunately
by cogito ergo sum on May 19, 2009 5:41 AM EDT up reply actions
Sherk is washed up. He might win a fight, then get beat up, then take a year off. He’s too short to compete.
by mikehunt on May 18, 2009 12:58 PM EDT reply actions
LOL. He’s the same height as Edgar (supposedly).
I say ‘supposedly’ because it’s interesting that they’ve gotten the heights wrong on several occasions, for example, Couture ain’t 6’2, he’s more 6’0 or 6’1 and back in the early days — the Forties — when Rich Franklin came to the UFC they had him as 5’11 where he is surely around 6’1.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions
I saw him standing next to Hughes one time and he came up to his waist. Trust me Sherk is nothing more than a muscled up midget. His next gig will be as tattoo on the remake of Fantasy Island.
by mikehunt on May 18, 2009 1:39 PM EDT up reply actions
How about the fools listing Anderson Silva on his 1st fight as 5’11. Has he shrunk?!?
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on May 18, 2009 10:38 PM EDT up reply actions
And how’s Sherk washed up? Beat Griffin in a war, beat Florian in a bloody war, beat Franca in a war. All back and forth battles
Sherks training proves he’s not washed up
He didn’t beat one of the best in BJ and he’s washed up?
by IrishKev on May 18, 2009 2:12 PM EDT up reply actions
what ever happened to huerta? after losing to kenny like august last yr, i dont think i seen him fight, i know he is in the game, would love to see him get back into the fray as he was pretty damn good
by CoNr on May 18, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah. He had a busy year and then said that shit about the UFC and then lost to Florian — especially after saying he can’t lose which looked awkward, although the video editing on the pre-fight interviews should really still keep things in context — and supposedly has another fight on his contract but has either shot himself in the foot, or he’s on a temporary hiatus or something.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 10:29 PM EDT up reply actions
He’s doin’ Hollywood movies for now…
by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on May 18, 2009 10:41 PM EDT up reply actions
I bet Hughes never thought he would be fighting on the undercard of a Rashad Evans fight.
by Danawhite isgay on May 18, 2009 1:50 PM EDT reply actions
WHat!?
where did you get that!? He’s definately not on the undercard and will MORE than likely be fight RIGHT BEFORE the Main Event!
by SoCalStunNa on May 18, 2009 11:22 PM EDT up reply actions
O Damn, I am with you. I don’t get why people hate on Sherk so much. He was holding his own with both GSP and BJ until the GnP and then that burtal knee. I like Sherk, but IMO I don’t think he could beat Florian again. I love both Florian and Sherk, but I would be beting on Kenny this time around.
by ItsJustMe on May 18, 2009 2:10 PM EDT reply actions
The roids? I thought it was because he was a midget? (Even though he’s as tall as Edgar and some others).
You really have it in for him.
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 10:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Why is it that some fighters gets harassed for years about steroids while others are forgiven the day after they get caught?
Stop the fcking hate on Sherk right now and direct your hate towards someone who got caught more recently, thanks.
by Americana on May 18, 2009 3:58 PM EDT reply actions
Yeah, especially since in his case it’s still a contentious issue whether he did or not. I’m not saying he didn’t but the accusation has sullied his name.
But no one goes on and on about it regarding other fighters. Didn’t Belfort get caught for roids? Didn’t Royce Gracie? Or was that another controversial issue?
by Johnny Farnham on May 18, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions
