Wanderlei Silva: Money talks. Will 'Spider' walk?

Props: Fighters Only Magazine

Quoteworthy:

"If Anderson believes in Franklin so much, bet $50,000 and let's see who takes the money. I go to knock him out. I have trained so much and Rich won't last two rounds. I think it is good Anderson has been preparing him. I hope he is also on the corner. I want to dare him to bet $50,000. I put these amount and Anderson or his sponsors, Ed Soares or Joinha, bet another part. Who wins takes the money."

Wanderlei Silva has strong words for fellow Brazilian and former training partner Anderson Silva, who may have betrayed an unwritten code by preparing former UFC middleweight rival Rich Franklin for his bout against "The Axe Murderer" at UFC 99: "The Comeback" at the Lanxess Arena in Cologne, Germany, on June 13, 2009. "The Spider" spent a few weeks with "Ace" at his gym in California, which didn't sit well with Wandy -- who now expects Silva to pony up 50 G's to prove how confident he is that Franklin will win. This over-the-top challenge comes on the heels of another high-profile spat bewteen Affliction Veep Tom Atencio and Dana White -- who refused an Atencio invitation to end their dispute inside the Octagon. What happened to the good ol' days when guys settled their differences by playing the dozens???

I got wand! Franklin won’t know what to do with someone so aggressive ala spider!

Franklin will take him apart with technique and precision.

by PW on May 17, 2009 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wand’s only chance is to get a KO he ain’t winning any decision’s or standup battles that is about technique or anything, he’s just too short and he’s swinging wild with no defense whatsoever..

by RoB on May 17, 2009 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Franklin simply doesn’t have the power to shut him off. He’s also someone who cumulates damage by constantly moving forward but no one will out-forward wand. I don’t see rich’s technique being as clean while moving backwards either so it’s a matter of time before he gets clipped enough times.

by NameNotRequired on May 17, 2009 3:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you but just like Chuck I think Wandy can get knocked out by anybody….I know Rampage is a beast but he really doesn’t have that kind of one punch power…Jardine lasted and Forrest, Wandy just looked like someone shot him during his fight…his chin is gone!! His best bet is to bum rush Rich and mual him. People say Wandy is just facing toughing competition, that may be true but he gets laid out now…like sleeping!! which never happened before, even when Vitor ko’d him he was still not dreaming, sad but Wandy is done and Rich will win this fight but I will be rooting for Wandy always…

by Robert(1) on May 17, 2009 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rampage does not have that one punch knockout power? wow, anybody would have been out from that hook he threw at Wanderlei.. If he landed punches like that at Jardine or Forrest they would have been out cold!

by RoB on May 17, 2009 7:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Had Rampage landed such a powerful and well placed punch on Jardine or Forrest, they might have DIED in the Octagon.

IMO, this is a terrible match up for Franklin. Some of you guys just have no idea how technical wanderlei can be. Yes he is known as a slugger, but I have seen him technical out strike Cro Cop, and Hunt…..Lets see Rich do that! Not a chance! Rich would have crapped his pants had he had to stare at cro Cop in his prime across the ring!

I am so sick of all the idiots telling me that Wandy’s chin is SHOT! Thats just silly talk! Only times Wandy’s chin didnt hold up was against Henderson’s BOMBS, Rampage’s perfectly placed hook, that would have KO’ed an ELEPHANT, and cro cop’s left high kick, which is one of the most devestating strikes in the history of mma, and that kick didnt even land on wandy’s chin, he took it on the dome…what Human would have not been Ko’ed by that? Maybe not Fedor, but we agreed that he is more GOD then Human!

NNR is absolutely right. Rich’s technical striking wont mean anything once he is back peddling! Rich’s power is also over rated. Imo Rich is crazy if he strikes with wanderlei. Rich can win this fight by taking wanderlei down n ground n pounding wandy’s over rated K-mart black belt…problem is that Franklin, like wandy is a crowd pleaser. This is a main event and Rich knows that no 1 wants to see Wanderlei in a ground fight, so im pretty sure Rich will stand with wandy the entire time. BIG MISTAKE! Rich just doesnt have the chin to be able to deal with him. Rich is used to being hit by middleweights and he is used to dealing with middleweight level chins. Wanderlei, has been undersized his entire career. Wanderlei has destroyed heavyweights with impressive chins. For example, anyone see what he did to fujita with his punches? Lets see Franklin Ko Fujita and his fire plug sized dome! Lets see Rich franklin’s chin hold up against the heavy hitting Mark Hunt. Who has Rioch ever ko’ed standing? Quarry? Big deal! Do I really have to run off the list of great fighters that Wanderlei has KNocked Silly?

Wanderlei is going to win this fight. Rich can thank Anderson for pissing wanderlei off even more, and probably tripling wandy’s intensity n aggression come fight night!

Only way Rich can win this fight is by taking wanderlei down. Which isnt going to happen. THe great part about this match up is that both fighters are crowd pleasers. They know that the fans want to see them strike, and they will deliver. Big Props to Rich. He could easily win this fight by taking it to the ground, but he will give the fans what they want, stand with Wanderlei, and probably get KO’ed into next week for it! For that I have to respect and applaud Rich.

Hope his plastic surgeon can make the trip to Germany!

fyi: Rich is going to break mentally as soon as wanderlei locks him into a tai clinch! If he thought Anderson had an aggressive Tai clinch, wait till he feels wanderlei’s!!!!!!

Wandy lost to both Hunt and Cro Cop
At this point I take Ace’s chin over Wandy’s, not the Wandy of Pride but the Wandy of today

I actually think Wandy is being smart. Wandy is a loss or two from becoming, a past his prime novelty. With all his jabbering with Anderson, he’s planting seeds for a potential “grudge match” in the future. This is a smart way to get a quicker title shot. Grudge matches make the UFC money. Case in point: Sham vs. Ortiz.

If Wandy can find a way to win a couple fights (no small task), I guarantee that his name will be brought for a title shot.

I can hear the marketing gimmick for this fight already…“Brazilian grudge match. Former teammates with a score to settle. UFC 110. Only on PPV.”

Just you wait.

I wish Wand would not talk smack like this.

I know they want to set up some Wanderlei vs Anderson big fight down the road, I guess it doesnt really matter if he wins or loses cause any one of us would pay to see them fight.

Rich is a great fighter however and Wanderlei should not be so cocky in underestimating him.

Rich has only ever really lost to the best in the business, same more or less with Wandy.

I am thinking Rich takes this one by a submission, probably a triangle.

by DirtyML on May 17, 2009 5:20 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i LOVE wandy but don’t think this was a wise comment.

obviously he has the confidance (and HAS to) but think about it….

WHAT IF he were to lose, get cut by the UFC (or take a major pay reduction) then owe 50 K….

either way this is a fight i was hoping NOT to see as neither one can really afford a loss (more so WANDY) plus both are two of my favorite fighters!

by SoCalStunNa on May 17, 2009 5:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wandy wont get cut or a reduction and he WILL win this fight as he said KO!

franklin tko

by markg on May 17, 2009 5:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

If he fights him the way he fought Lutter or Hamill, I seriuosly doubt it. Even though Wandi was recently knocked out, I have not seen anything in Franklins last few fights to show me that he has what it takes to beat him, and I do not see him hitting as hard or inflicting no where near as much damage as Chuck did to Wandi, and Chuck couldn’t take him out. I see a TKO for Wandi, probably second round.

by Ade on May 17, 2009 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Despite rooting for Rich and really, really hoping he wins, I agree that he needs to step up his game and show a better performance than he did against Lutter and Hamill. There was something lacking, an energy or something, which seemed too laid back or uncommitted.

He survived a potential Henderson KO and even started to take him apart near the end, but he’s gotta get quicker and more explosive.

I reckon his technique will win the fight with Wand but it doesn’t mean I won’t constantly fear the unexpected KO from him.

by Johnny Farnham on May 17, 2009 8:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ade, I gotta disagree. Franklin doesn’t need one punch power to stop Wand. Look at the way a guy like Nick Diaz strikes. Nice and easy, not full power on every shot. Just continues to pepper you and accumulate the damage whilst picking his spots to throw hard shots. Franklin is going to throw more strikes than Chuck did against Wand. Also, Franklin will be able to let his strikes go b/c there is no danger of being taken down as in the Hamill fight or being with a guy like Lutter who has serious ground skills(although he’s a dope). The other thing you have to keep in mind is the Wand has some SERIOUS miles on his body and has taken alot of shots to his head. If boxing has tought us anything it’s that accumulation of damage over time seriously diminishes a fighters abilities not only to work his own game but also to take a punch. This is why I have no problem with Dana not wanting Chuck to fight anymore. Yes Chuck may still be all there mentally, and may be able to compete, but it’s not worth having one of your legends end up like Ali or Frazer or any of the other hundreds of boxers with the “mush head” as I like to call it. Chuck and Wand are gonna represent the sport for a long time to come and it’s not prudent to put them in positions to hamper their quality of life in the long run by sticking around too long. I think Wand is capable of knocking Rich out, but I see this looking like Anderson v Leben, just a little less of a blowout. Rich takes this one. UD or KO from head kick.

by Crowls on May 17, 2009 10:11 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I am not really convinced that Rich is the same fighter he used to be before his losses to Silva. I cannot see the same Rich Franklin who fought Tanner or The Crow (not going to try to spell his name). I beleive he will buckle under the power aggresiveness and ferocity of Silva. Most of the other fighters let Rich fight his own game, Silva will not give him the chance (look what happened to Jardine). Rich will not be able to avoid getting hit by Silva for three rounds. This fight will determnine if either of these fighters still has what it takes to compete in the upper levels of their division. Should be interesting.

by Ade on May 19, 2009 4:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Interesting comments, he is really trying to make sure he is the number on contender after the Franklin fights. I hope he wins, because I would love to see the two Brazialians go at it.

I think wandy is taking this a little too far. I dont think he needs to start calling people out. He’s only bet Jardine and Peterra inside the octagan. Hes trying to build a fight with A. Silva but hes out of his league.

by sarah on May 17, 2009 10:24 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Franklin will win a UD. It will be much like Bisping vs Leben as how u will have the brawler type just getting picked apart by a more technical striker. After Franklin wins this one give him another LHW contender then a title shot. Hey u know thats what Dana wants to do. Do u really think he could stomach another lackluster main event like Evans vs Machida. If it was Franklin vs Machida you already have some storyline built-in.

by guy on May 17, 2009 10:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Evans vs Machida a lackluster event?? Two of the best in the division, both undefeated, for the title, and that’s not a good storyline? Evans who was never supposed to win has surprised everyone and keeps winning and is very cocky about it. Machida and his complicated style that seems to work on everyone too, also a humble guy. What more do you want??

Franklin wont fight his heart out. If he thinks he might get knocked out he will crumple to the mat like he did in the second Anderson fight and the 1st rd of the Henderson fight. he wants to be paid but will not risk getting knocked out or even worse having his nose broken again! Wanderlei is counting on Franklin being the broken man that we all saw even in the first 2 minutes of the 1st Anderson fight, you could see the look in his eyes was like “I want out”!!!

by JRE on May 17, 2009 11:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Franklin showed amazing heart in the second fight with Silva. Your crazy if you think Rich is scared man

yes franklin did show alot of heart[just taking the second fight]..

but~ that doesnt mean he looked confident..

imo~ franklin looked defeated before he fought silva the 2nd time..

he knew what was going to happen~ he just didnt want to look like a puss!

Wandy is going out like chuck, mark my words, although i’m sure he can still beat some of the scrubs in the 185lb division..

Say what you want about franklin, but there’s only one guy that can finish him and its not that ‘Silva.’

by spitforce on May 17, 2009 5:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wandy is over. Hes so past his best its embarrassing. Franklin is going to pick him apart and show Wandy is nowhere in the UFC’s best in 2009. Doesnt matter what division, LH or MW. He might beat the middle guys, but the top of each division he wont win. I just cant count Jardine as a decent benchmark. Sorry, but thats the facts.

Wandy will lose to Franklin, and even if he doesnt get sacked, I dont see him beating Silva, Marquart, Bisping, Hendo, Maia or any the top MW guys of 09. Sad, but true.

by UK_Chris on May 17, 2009 7:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wandy is not done he is only 33. You guy listen to Joe Rogan too much. He should beat Franklin and I see no one at 185 that can beat him. He is too aggressive for Frank. If he loses he is done. If not he is one fight away from a title. Give him the hendo Bisping loser.

by hatteras on May 17, 2009 9:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why does wandy talk shit like i wonder how franklin is going to react if anderson or his camp accept the bet lol for a guy who doesnt like conflict a 50k bet would sure add a lot of conflict lol but franklin by brutal body kicks then finish with a head kick wandy going to sleep again lol

by canadian kid on May 17, 2009 9:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wandy is done. I love the passion that all his fans show, and he will be in the hall of fame. Maybe i shouldn’t say he’s completely done…..he can compete in certain fights, but he’ll get picked apart by Franklin, and Bisping would do the same thing. After Wandi loses to Franklin, they should match him up against Leben. That would be an awesome fight.

by kg on May 17, 2009 10:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed hatteras. Wandy has been a reckless fighter is the reason he is losing but he has always been that kind of fighter he just getting caught more now so he needs to change his fight gameplan because his opponents are a lot better trained and aware of Wandy’s style that hasn’t changed all that much from his Pride days.
