Matt Serra

some ppl say they do not want to watch this fight and i have no idea why…. i’m really excited about this fight just because of all the hate between these two…. i love grudge matches the fighters usually give it there all because they do not want there opponent running there mouth if they lose to them

i think matt serra should win here more than likely TKO

by ufcaddict on May 16, 2009 9:04 AM EDT up reply actions

The reason this fight stands out to me is because we ususally see rematches where fighters just want to avenge their previous loss. These guys are calling each other names and all – not the usual “I’m going to knock him out”. These guys really hate each other.

I’m expecting fireworks, and I’ll set off a few after Machida wins!

by UFC Champ on May 16, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Will someone please look at this video and tell me who sounds more like a jackass. Seriously Matt Serra even looks like a dlck, have you ever seen the picture mania always puts up of him all lubed up? The only real clip they show of Serra fighting is his fight with GSP which was a one off and went straight to his head. I can’t wait for mr. irrelevant to lose to Hughes and fade back into the nothingness.

by cogito ergo sum on May 17, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Great line! I laughed when I heard him say that.

by UFC Champ on May 16, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Should be a pretty cool fight. I am so glad I am off of work for this. I really don’t know who will win. Everyone says Hughes should retire but he lost to Alves and GSP. Those two are beasts and there is no shame in a loss to them. Granted, he didn’t look all that great against Lytle, but that could have easily been a case of him underestimating Lytle.

by RyanHobbs on May 16, 2009 7:50 AM EDT reply actions

Not to mention Lytle has never been tko’d or submitted other than on cuts. Matt dominated that fight anyway, and almost subbed him 2 or 3 times. I agree too that at the time, losses to GSP and Alves are nothing to really be ashamed of. I mean, come on! If you use that against Hughes, then its saying that GSP and Alves are crap.

Hughes does not lose this fight, and will win a decision. Matt “Shit-Talker” Serra will get humbled by a giant country “dick” as he puts ti.

by Synyster on May 16, 2009 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions

On top of that, it is not like Serra did any better against Lytle in their fight in the TUF finale.

by naturalshadow on May 16, 2009 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions

Exactly. At least Hughes definitively won his fight with Lytle, and all Serra did was clinch and footstomps. I still think Lytle won that fight, and Lytle would absolutetly KILL Serra if they fought now.

by Synyster on May 17, 2009 1:10 AM EDT up reply actions

if serra gets the win here i would like to see him fight thiago alves next after the gsp fight

by markg on May 16, 2009 8:18 AM EDT reply actions

WARRRRR SERRA!

by Kibs on May 16, 2009 9:05 AM EDT reply actions

i hope serra koncks him the fuck out , however if matt puts him on his back matt will ground and pound him for sure

by andrewb on May 16, 2009 9:13 AM EDT reply actions

by ruan-fiy on May 16, 2009 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions

lol….My prediction.. Matt Wins!!!!

by DirtbagHtr on May 17, 2009 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

WAR Hughes! Send Serra outta the UFC !

by Americana on May 16, 2009 9:40 AM EDT reply actions

hell yeah, I hope Hughes smashes that guido

by RiverHorror on May 17, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Why is it that most people are rooting for Serra in this one? Hughes was an awesome champ and he’s funny as hell…well if you have the right dry sense of humor.

by ja434650 on May 16, 2009 10:27 AM EDT reply actions

The differnce between the two Matts is that when you really take the time to think about it, I really think if you hung out with Serra on a regular basis, i see him being a very humble down to earth guy who looks out for the people he cares about. While Hughes on the other hand does seem like he would be just like Serra describes him, a huge self absorbed dick who looks out for Matt Hughes. Its funny how Serra always says Matt Hughes seems like that jock back in high school who beat up on nerds cause I could totally see that. Again ive obviously never met them but those are the impressions i really get from both of them. That being said I hope Serra wins, but I respect Hughes and I think it could go either way, really excited for it though

by Dave on May 16, 2009 11:05 AM EDT up reply actions

The other big difference between the two is that Hughes was a real champ, while Serra was just borrowing the belt from GSP for a while.

by naturalshadow on May 16, 2009 5:36 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes is a wanker!

by Nick on May 16, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

Dave, that’s exactly how I feel. You took the words right out of my mouth. (Except I disagree with your last line on respecting Hughes.) I respect Hughes as a fighter but not as a person.

Naturalshadow, we all know Hughes was a champ for much longer and that he is a future hall of famer. But he is still a d**k.

I am rooting for Serra all the way. I am not sure if he will win but I will be pulling for him.

by ProKev on May 17, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

Matt Serra didn’t “look out for the people he cares about” when he fired his best man and stopped talking to him after the events in TUF. Hughes, on the other hand, helps fund an orphanage in Mexico with his own money and visits injured soldiers at military hospitals. If that is being a “dick”, I think we need a lot more “dicks” in this world.

by Play The Man on May 16, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, but Serra’s buddy kept whimpering like a lil bitch..“oh I miss my girlfriend” yadda yadda, when Serra is the one who hooked him up with a spot on TUF and a golden opportunity. In front of Serra, he would be all 100% there, then behind is back, whimpering and even his teammates were like “STFU”

Very interesting fight. Pretty much a loser retirement match. Loser will have nothing going for him after, and the winner prob the same. Won’t affect the top 5 rankings, Fitch, Kos, Alves, Swick, Davis, etc…

by DirtbagHtr on May 17, 2009 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions

WAR SERRA,

Please destroy that fucktard farmer boy ass hole!

Hughes is a smug pos. I hated Hughes even more when he started talking shit about the Gracies. I mean if you are going to talk smack about the greates martial arts family even, then DO NOT use jiu-jitsu nor train with it. Stick to your wrestleing you farmer fuck!

by socalbiker on May 16, 2009 10:32 AM EDT reply actions

I seem to remember that when they fought, Matt Hughes had the BJJ blackbelt Royce Gracie in a tight armbar; Gracie refused to submit. Hughes could have easily hyperextended Gracie’s arm (see video clips of Cantwell’s fight with Al-Hassan or Mir’s win over Tim Sylvia to see what kind of carnage was avoided) but instead let go of the armbar so as not to cripple the legend. Hughes might have “talked smack” about the Gracie’s, but he showed Royce Gracie mercy and respect when he was at his most vulnerable. It is a shame that you can’t show a great former champ like Matt Hughes at least a modicum of respect in your comments. Your vulgar comments don’t reflect well on the Gracie family.

by Play The Man on May 16, 2009 11:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Why do you think Hughes deliberately released the kimura on Gracie out of respect? Looked to me like he was cranking on it as hard as he could, but Royce was either too flexible or too stubborn to tap. Comparing it to the Cantwell arm-bar is foolish, that was a totally different submission where Cantwell had a lot more leverage.

by Jeremyjackson on May 17, 2009 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions

All these anti-hughes comments are too funny. Can anyone come up with something better then jock farmboy bully. If you don’t know him personally, your just a hater. Listening to Serra will get you guys nowhere. Serra has done nothing in the ufc but get a lucky tko win over GSP. Did you guys see the rematch??…at least Hughes tried in his rematch with GSP. I like Serra, but im with Hughes for this one. Serra is jealous of Hughes and he is very disrespectful. If you guys watch the T.U.F 4,you will see how big of a dick Serra is…He started all the shit talking for no reason. All I see is envy in his eyes. He even went at Rich F. for giving advice to the fighters. Serra needs to stay coaching. He is not a fighter. WAR HUGHES….1st round destruction.

by mmasmartass on May 16, 2009 11:28 AM EDT reply actions

listen mmadumbass…At least Hughes trued in the rematch? In both rematches Hughes got dominated by GSP, you can’t even compare it to Serras rematch. At UFC 79, GSP dominated every aspect of that fight, he had Hughes mounted and made him tap, verbally. I dont recall GSP being able to mount Serra, or even land any significant strikes.

Rich Franklins adice to serra was bullshit. Go to one knee? thats not advice

get your head out of your ass dumbass, SERRA 2nd ROUND TKO

by Zach on May 16, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

If GSP didn’t land any significant strikes against Serra, then why did Serra look like he was mugged in an alley when the fight was over.

by naturalshadow on May 16, 2009 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions

What a delusional,funny troll!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 16, 2009 6:45 PM EDT up reply actions

That was for you Zach!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 16, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

What do they mean the verbal war continues? None of this is new. This is the same old videos we have seen for a year.

Hughes was a great fighter. Serra holds the advantages in this one though. Serra is better on his feat, much better BJJ also.

Serra will win this one, Hughes is past his prime.

by IrishMike on May 16, 2009 11:47 AM EDT reply actions

Serra does hold the advantage in the stand-up and the bjj, but Hughes is the superiour wrestler here and if he still has enough in him, he picks where this fight goes and Serra will not tko him or submit him from his back. Serra has a punchers chance in this fight imo.

by brac on May 16, 2009 12:56 PM EDT reply actions

Zack your a tool. Who would you rather listen to Franklin or Serra? I will take Franklin everytime thanks though man. Serra its going to get beat in every part of this fight. I can’t stand Serra and hope Hughes puts him into retirement. Hughes GnP round 2.

by ItsJustMe on May 16, 2009 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

this fight is easy to breakdown

Serra – advantage in standup
Serra – advanatge in BJJ
Hughes – wrestling
Hughes – strength
Both – heart

I honestly think this is Hughes fight to lose, its like Serra said, he is training for the old Hughes, but who knows how hard Matt Hughes is really training? Maybe he thinks he will beat Serra easily and is taking him lightly. I can’t wait to see this fight.

by Chadx23 on May 16, 2009 2:06 PM EDT reply actions

Agreed!

Except i’d give the heart advantage to Hughes. He was on the Brink of defeat and conciousness in the 2nd Trigg fight and came back to defeat him in the exact same way, AGAIN!

Hughes is looking HUGE again, can’t wait to see him shut Serra up.

After Serra loses this fight he falls back into the realm of insignificance.

That being said i hope Hughes Demolishes Serra then RETIRES off into the sunset!

by SoCalStunNa on May 16, 2009 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes spent the last week training with Sherk in Minnesota and prior to that was in Utah training BJJ with Jeremy Horn. He seems to be training hard.

by Play The Man on May 16, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions

if hes training with Sherk you know he’ll be in shape and have cardio to spare!

by SoCalStunNa on May 16, 2009 11:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Match is important to Serra cause he has a chance to avenge Royce’s loss. Both fighters are hypocrites when it comes to why they hate each other.

by ognitinoc on May 16, 2009 5:54 PM EDT reply actions

Finaly ! i have been waiting for this one for a long long time. all respect to hughes but WAR SERRA!
