UFC Quick Quote: Matt Hughes has an empty bag

"Matt Hughes lost his athleticism, his explosiveness. When that goes, you have to rely a little bit more on technique. That's where he's gonna have some trouble. He used to be the bigger, stronger and better athlete than most of these guys and he could just do his thing, and that's what's been his biggest downfall, his ego. I'm sure he thinks that because he's bigger than me or that he can bench press more than me that he'll just come in and take me down. He thinks he has it in the bag. I'm not training for the Matt Hughes that lost his last two fights, I'm training for the Matt Hughes of old. That's the difference, and he's gonna find out the hard way."

– Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Serra talks to host Larry Pepe on MMAmania.com’s exclusive presentation of Pro MMA Radio about the sport passing Matt Hughes by -- without him even realizing it. The pair have been feuding endlessly since their stints as coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 6 back in 2007. Fast forward to UFC 98 on May 23 — the scheduled date that Serra and Hughes are expected to finally meet inside the Octagon to settle their epic grudge match.

I agree Hughes has lost his explosiveness, just look at the Lytle fight, and his last GSP fight.

by JRE on May 15, 2009 11:33 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hmm i don’t think so- look at that the ppl he’s faced and lost too, GSP twice, Alves- both of which are exremely athletic, built like a pitbull (one of which is named pitbull)- so i wouldn’t say he lost his explosivness, either way im going for Matt Serra i just hope he wins cuz at this point he’s doing more of the talking, and if he loses that is the worst feeling to talk smack then lose.. so he better win with all the talkin he’s doing.

Btw- anyone else think that if Hughs does win he should fight Koscheck?? i think that would be a great fight kos is for sure top 5, and he could be the one that makes hughes retire

by ricky on May 15, 2009 11:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont think hes top 5, he just got knocked by a no name

according to Inside MMA, Thiago is not a no-name…they’ve actually ranked him #6 in the world if you can believe that

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 12:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

McArthur- do you really think he should be up there? Or that the stoppage was legit?

One more thing, I’m assuming you’re the Craig McArthur that Facebook’d me, Arik Furner?

by Synyster on May 15, 2009 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thank you Ricky. I’ve been wanting and saying a Hughes/Koscheck fight for dunno how long now. At least someone agrees

by IrishKev on May 15, 2009 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Syn…I had this convo with OD last week…There is no way I see Thiago up there at 6…we listed fighters such as KOS, Kamp, Hardy, Carlos, Serra, Karo, Swick, and Rumble amoung others that have more high profile wins but because Thiago takes out KOS and is undefeated at 10-0 he is #6…it rediculous also because other than KOS I don’t recognize 1 name that he’s beaten. Its weird to because the Inside MMA ranks are the best ones imo…and yes that was me on facebook ;)

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah i agree with you.

I went to Fight Magazine . com to try to find the article on Hughes, and got suckered in to looking at their fighter rankings. Check out their Welterweight ranks and try to find Josh Kos. I lol’d when I found him (finally). and also laughed at number 2 and 4. seriously, check them out.

by Synyster on May 15, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know…they let their readers vote…but still who would vote for whats-his-name at #2 and Swick at 4…its very strange that they publish that

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I laughed. Kos at 29. Gomi at 39. Aoki at 20. Coleman at 12. Trigg at 11. Jardine at like 40 something. Its fucking crazy

popularity contest

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What the hell kinda of rankings are those? The funny thing is I would assume (and this would be my fault) that if you subscribe to Fight or frequent their site that you not just be a casual fan and you would know something if you were going to go through the trouble.

by DSmith on May 15, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just had a lokk, their rankings are seriously f*cked up!

Their LW rankings are HORRIBLE!

How is Florian ABOVE BJ when their fight is upcoming???

and look where Gomi is???

and Tyson below Huerta and all the others???

the most accurate list i saw was the viewer’s choice!

by SoCalStunNa on May 15, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

once you get over the fact that the ranking SUCK and aren’t accurate, its kinda funny

by Synyster on May 16, 2009 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ricky- thats why I don’t see how everyone has made Hughes out to be the “bad guy” when Matt Serra just runs his mouth on and on and on and on and on and ON talking shit about Hughes. The guy never shuts up. This MAY just be a fact with Mania posting every Serra interview and no Hughes interviews (if there even are any), but either way, the site is hearing Serra talk all kinds of junk and Matt Hughes doesn’t say a word, other than the UFC interviews, which they are obligated to do.

by Synyster on May 15, 2009 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Mania doesn’t normally post Hughes’ interviews. They get them from his blogs on his website.

by Eastern Sun on May 15, 2009 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

even though he beat Lytle, he looked horrible in that fight taking CL down and laying on top for 3 rds, practically no damage done. His Physical appearance shows that he has lost something, look at the difference between the Royce Gracie fight and the recent pics of him, pitiful.

by JRE on May 15, 2009 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree about the physical apearance, i posted the exact same comparison a couple of months back, he was huge in the gracie fight and he looked, small, skinny, and unhealthy. Have you seen the videos of him lately though, he’s looking huge again, remember that all he could do when the knee injury was healing was weight lifting and i think he will be much bigger than he was in the alves fight, as for him loosing his athleticisam, did he really have much in the first place, he never really looked light on his feet and had a super fast shoot for a takedown like say gsp, he would just overpower most people with superior wresting. As for the lytle fight i think he was playing it safe because he really needed a win at that point. I dont think that loosing to gsp and alves means your finished, i deffinatly don’t see him being champ again but i could see him getting another shot at some point before he retires, if he wants it enough. thats probably the biggest question at this point, its obvious that he wants to win this fight badly but does he have the motivation to continue training the way he needs to, if he does i think he could still beat most in the WW devision.
I see him taking this by UD or 2nd RD TKO, i think serra will be to eager to just hit him in the face, then he’ll get taken down and i dont see him subing hughes and once hughes starts raining down gnp serra will just cover up. In a way i feel a little bad for whoever looses this because they’ll just never live it down, i think it will be worse for serra though

by hughes on May 15, 2009 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think it’d be worse for Hughes, at least if Serra loses they can always say he’s small for WW and he needs to move down to LW; but if Hughes loses he has no where to go. As far as the trash talk goes, it’ll be forgotten inside of a month after the fights over.

by O damn he got caught on May 15, 2009 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Im a hughes fan and I agree that he has lost a step and also that the sport is passing him by without him evolving. The main reason he looked bigger for the gracie fight was because it was at a higher weight i believe. Im not sure, but maybe 176 or something of that nature.

by What? on May 15, 2009 3:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree…like Liddell, Hughes’ downturn in his career has been a sharp decline. Normally a lot of guys slowly start to lose their edge but these guys have gone from dominating to being dominated in a matter of months, not years. I’m pretty torn on this fight. I respect Matt Hughes for all he’s done and the dominance he’s shown in the past and I believe this to be his last fight. I’d kind of like to see a pioneer of the sport finish off on a high note but at the same time I’d kind of like to see Serra send him off with his tail between his legs and that should teach Matt about critiquing other fighters.

by Buster Bluth on May 15, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If hughes wins this fight and looks good doing it, I don’t see this being his last fight. If he gets tooled, then maybe so.

by brac on May 15, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

what can a former champ in the sport really look forwad to after the chance of another title fight is hopeless?

by JRE on May 15, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m all for Serra winning….but if your gonna say hes lost it…..then you better make this fight look easy Serra…otherwise, you gonna look like a dumbass.

Thank god for the extra tickets the suite is entitled to! I’ve sold 15 seats so far and just had to turn someone who wanted 4 down…sorry! John is the only one I’m holding a seat for (even though he’s gonna tie me up and leave me in a bad neighborhood…sounds kinky)!
If you want, 1 or 2 seats still available, get at me!

Glad everything smoothed out for ya Kev. There would have been some serious wrath on this site if it didn’t.

LOL Serra you better win this fight with al the bullshit you have been talking. I dont care for hughes too much either, but he is a lock for a HOF spot. So hughes has earned the right to talk trash, but seriously Serra what have you done to be talking this much trash? Compare your careers and there is no question who is, or was better

by lokie on May 15, 2009 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Even without all that, Hughes will tool Serra.

by Americana on May 15, 2009 11:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Clever headline JH. Hopefully Hughes is peaking for fight night, and he has not blown his load prematurely;)

by DH on May 15, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

In his last few fights, Hughes seemed resigned to lose.

This fight, just out of pure dislike/grudge, I hope Hughes will come out a different fighter.

I hope we see the Hughes of old and not a remnant of himself.

Hughes making a big win and then retire would be a cool way from him to exit.

by DubNub on May 15, 2009 11:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And how old is this washed up never-was who is talking?

This flash in a pan never dominated, never was anything, so, if Hughes has lost a step, this guy must have lost everything that he never had in the first place.

Good article in FIGHT mag this month on Hughes (who’s on the cover)…

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 12:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I just read it last night…it was a very solid article. Almost made me like Hughes but I do agree that he’s taken out of context way too much in the media and their portrayal of him on TUF was for ratings so they did some creative editting. He’s a down to earth kind of guy and he’s obviously not afraid to speak his mind and is very forthcoming. The one thing I don’t think anyone can argue against is that Hughes may very well may be the most mentally tough fighter ever in the UFC. No one has really ever gotten in his head and he’s shown a lot of heart with his come from behind wins and he’s never turned down a fight from what I know.

Only 8 days away from the destruction of Matt Serra.

by JT on May 15, 2009 12:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It seems as though Hughes is taking this fight seriously. He went to Sean Sherk’s gym and trained for a week and I believe he also trained a week with Jeremy Horn’s camp. I hope we see some of the old Hughes in this fight. If we do, he puts Serra on his back and wins a ud imo.

by brac on May 15, 2009 12:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I live in nY and met Matt Serra last saturday. I can tell you that he is dead serious for this fight and is in amazing shape. ive never seen matt look this in shape for a fight. besides getting taken down and laid on, i dont see him losing this fight. he’s got the upper hand in stand up and submissions.

by bobby o'shea on May 15, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

stand up??? don’t know about that. and on the ground, Serra will hold an advantage as long as he’s on top which might not even happen

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughes stand up is god aweful, Serra CAN’T have worse stand up than that.

by O damn he got caught on May 15, 2009 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by McArthur on May 15, 2009 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well the Alves fight really shows how bad Hughes stand up is, he wasn’t even using any strikes to set up a TD, he was so desperate he just shot in from the outside on about every attempt.

by O damn he got caught on May 15, 2009 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Serra has better striking than GSP.

Yeah, I said it. And it’s true. So he has to have better hands than Hughes.

Allow me to introduce myself. I am the acknowledged authority on all things MMA. In my own mind, that is. The name is Barry Coyle, as in drop a triple Coyler.

Hughes is done. His career is a ghost. His attitude is arrogance to the power fag. A quick rear naked and simultaneous hand job is homage to his current game. Eat it, shit lips.

Serra is a mouthpiece. As in watery stool, leaking from the corner of his smirk, corn catching between his incisors. Keep talking, Pablo. You’re the champ in the Netherworld.

This fight lacks. It’s got the heat of a scoop of tiger. That’s orange and licorice, for you giblets not in the know. Have a lick, even two.

I despise both these lumps. They’re heels with no game and barely can cut a decent promo. Serra (Sarah?) is adequate in this department; Hughes is abysmal.

Give me Lesnar and Couture, or even Lesnar and Penn. I don’t care. Hell give me Megan Fox and the chick from House. Wilde something. Whatever, she’s boner town.

In conclusion, Obama will save us all. And if not, he will fuck things up royally. You be the judge. Eat a dick, slutinski.

From the sound of it most of you guys are f***ing idiots! Do you guys even watch MMA? We are talking about a fight between Matt Hughes and Matt Serra right? Serra other than a bullshit lucky punch against GSP has beaten nobody, and I mean NOBODY! Hughes has lost a step against top talent, like Alves or GSP two of the toughest guys in the sport! But there is no way a never has been, never will be Serra has a chance in hell of beating Hughes! Explain to me how Serra is going to beat Hughes, please explain it! Hughes will win by B**** out, or Serra will regain his common sense and not show up because of what his face will look like after that fight! Come on people!
