Around SBN: The cost of firing vs. the cost of retaining head coaches

Dana White: Tom Atencio is an effing 'loser' and a 'goof'

Props: Cage Writer

Quoteworthy:

"If I were him, I'd want to fight me, too. I'm the guy who is killing all of his hopes and dreams.... But why would I fight this goof? He's neither a fighter nor a promoter. He's a [expletive] loser. That's all he is.... Let me tell you something: When I was $44 million in the hole, the last thing I was doing was leaving the office and going out to train for a joke of a fight. I was in the office and trying to find a way to make this thing work. Why would I waste one second of my second of my day worrying about this [expletive] guy? He should be worried about the millions and millions of his bosses, or his partners' money, whoever it is, that's he's burning. That's a complete joke."

UFC President Dana White responds to recent comments from Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio about a possible showdown some day in the future. Atencio made the remarks during a recent press conference to promote his upcoming welterweight fight against Randy Hedderick at "Ultimate Chaos," which is scheduled for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., on June 27. White is clearly not interested -- or impressed -- with his now rival's offer. Should he be?

boo-whoo! .. shut the f&*k up.

anyways.. yeah alot of people don’t like dana white, but shoot, alot of people don’t like trump either but i don’t ever hear of people calling him out.

LMAO….a tough guy just like Dana eh?

That’s good stuff lol

by introvert on May 14, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Introvert with the one off! Hoopla! Lol you just wait to respond to terrible posts but never have anything good to back up your statements. Just angry bias. Your more like Dana than you think, in that you talk a big game but when someone gives you a legitimate threat you back pedal or prey off the ignorant posts.

by Eastern Sun on May 15, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey Intro,

Didn’t you bash Dana yesterday for “not using his money” therefore he’s a douche?? I guess you forgot whose money Affliction is using. Oh, but that’s different because he’s not Dana. That would mean Atencio did nothing himself and he’s a real douche using your logic, actually he’s just an F-ing T-shirt guy!

by UFC Champ on May 15, 2009 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s not the way to treat an introvert mikey. Be nice, socialize, hehe!…Well in any case, pretty strong words there by Dana Whiteboy…

Someone’s in a grouchy mood besides D. White.

by DAVE A on May 14, 2009 11:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think they’re both dicks but their wallets are heavier than mine and they hire someone else to carry those heavy wallets, then again that’s not how i measure my worth. (maybe because if i did i would be getting my ass beat).

Screw you Dana! Nobody talks about my masseuse that way!

by PW on May 15, 2009 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But what Dana is forgetting is that he couldn’t afford to take time off to promote UFC and MMA. No one knew it and those who did hated it cause of the violence. No one was educated in MMA and couldn’t be cause of UFC’s freakshow fights
Dana’s UFC (when startin) had big names that no knew or cared about when starting
Thanks to Dana & co.‘s efforts, MMA and UFC are becoming main stream and people like Tom Atencio have been able to make other MMA brands
Atencio has some of the biggest names in MMA with WAMMA’s heavyweight champ guaranteed to be involved in the card and an educated & interested audience
So, what I’m trying to say is that Atencio can afford breaks THANKS to Dana

by IrishKev on May 14, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ya he got it sanctioned in vegas which made legal to bet on, which in turn made it legit just because he’s an asshole doesn’t mean he’s dumb. he basically saved mma and when he was saving it, it wasn’t even called mma

I read this earlier and laughed. someone actually asked Dana if he’d fight him and his response is priceless!

Ummmm…. hasn’t Dana already wasted several seconds, several days, and probably several weeks of his time when he tried to stage a boxing match between he and Tito Ortiz?

by ScissorSweep on May 14, 2009 7:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah but he was not in the hole :) now is is racking it in … each event is worth that $44 million he was in debt. So … whether we like him or hate him, Dana can do whatever the f**k he wants (as Dana would say)

by DownUnder on May 14, 2009 7:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So, he’s a rich poser? Even better.

by introvert on May 14, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How about he was honoring his contract with Tito and Tito pussed out! Introvert your head out of you ass!

by jasonfahq on May 14, 2009 9:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Has anyone not thought that Atencio is creating marketing for himself which in turn makes Dana look like the puss if he doesn’t step up. Even Atencio himself thinks it would probably never happen its just another way to knock Dana and the UFC and in doing so boost themselves a bit and what better way than to call out Dana to a fight.

The fact that he is willing to fight when Dana isn’t just makes him more of a fan amongst real fans as they know is willing to put it on the line and actually get in the ring while Dana hides behind his big ego and pretend to call out Tito to make him look a fighter.

I see this as a good little marketing angle that costs nothing. Affliction knows how to use the internet to market what they do and best of all its free!

Nice hypothesis Ca$z!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 15, 2009 4:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya but UFC was already big time at that point. His point is that Atencio should worry about his company losing money and trying to get more than 100K ppv buys, then fight.

by Fokman on May 14, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

…anyway…Dana talks tough and acts tough, but like a typical bully……he can only talk and act.

I know there is nothing to gain business wise for him to accept the challenge, but it does prove he’s a pussy.

by introvert on May 14, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He might be a pussy, but I’d bet my house he’d kill you still.

by jay on May 14, 2009 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He is a bully, a big one that is. Affliction is just small fry to him and he’d be always glad to take a chunk of the PPVs that Affliction has by counter-programming, just like a bully would take lunch money from a school kid.

by The Negation on May 14, 2009 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, Dana White is a business man. For him to accept a ridiculous fight offer from someone in the midst of a mid-life crisis, and bankruptcy, would be absurd. He is only saying what any CEO or high profile business person would say to a no win offer like this. Couldn’t agree with the guy more in this case..

Scott Coker is a much better representation of mma than either one of these guys. He is very competent and he isn’t a prick.

by Bill Maher on May 14, 2009 7:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thats your opinion bill but I think it’s the wrong one, fact is UFC is the most viewed MMA organization and he has been their representative that got them there it doesn’t matter if you hate him or love him he’s the most successful out of all them.

by Beaver on May 14, 2009 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Without a doubt, Dana is a brilliant businessman BUT I think Coker being a much better representation of MMA. This does not take away from Dana’s success. I just don’t think you can say DW is a good representative just because he is a smart business man.

by Bill Maher on May 14, 2009 10:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

haha good old dana, only time i hated him was when he was going to fire fitch over the game rights. but hell fitch should be glad that hes in such an awesome game

Agreed!
A top 3 UFC welterweight fresh off an exciting 5 round beatdown by one of the world’s best and he is Fired, then RE-hired, and sent to UNDERCARD all over videogame rights…

by SoCalStunNa on May 14, 2009 10:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This response isn’t suprising in the slightest. If Atencio was looking for a response when he challenged Dana then he got one. This publicity has gotten Affliction in the news but it has come at a price because Atencio has been made to look like a bit of a prat. As long as he delivers Fedor-Barnett, he can say and do whatever he wants.

by David W-S on May 14, 2009 8:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Atencio could have kept quiet, but D. White has directed so many personal insults his way, Atencio finally mutter something and D. White’s all over it! D. White’s a HATER… Between his recent shots at Hackleman, Lorreta Hunt, and now Atencio (and his inappropriate press about Liddell’s retirement). I wish he’d take a break from the insults for a couple of weeks. CHILL OUT!!

Seriously, which other head of a major organization talks/acts like this?

David Stern NBA?
Bud Selig? MLB
Roger Godell NFL?
Gary Betteman NHL?

This douche is the reason why MMA hasnt gone mainstream yet, can you imagine this fool dropping 1 F bomb per 30 seconds of conversation during a business meeting? What an ambassador :/

by Philly Phil on May 14, 2009 9:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You are clearly half brained. The reason MMA hasn’t gone mainstream yet is simple. People think it’s to brutal, we may know different, but that is still what a large segment of the “mainstream” think. You could have the pope as the president of the UFC and it wouldn’t change that fact. People see the blood, the kicking, elbows, knees etc. and they think they it’s barbaric. Saying Dana is the reason is just convenient for people. In the end the more mainstream this gets the more the censors will try to change the product that we all love so much.

by Hal on May 15, 2009 12:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He don’t exactly help it’s cause though does he? His foul mouthed outbursts and general unprofessional attitude are a real barrier to the sport progressing, without a doubt. MMA haters can hold up this caveman clown as an example of all they perceive bad about the sport? Hell if this is the president acting like this, what are the fighters and the fans like, they can ask? Are these the type of people we want to deal with?

by attakdog on May 15, 2009 4:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gotta agree with Philly and attakdog. I know Dana’s done a great job at building UFC but he should also do the same for representing UFC/MMA in a professional manner and stop acting like a gangster.

by Lights Out on May 15, 2009 10:12 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

F1 is the largest sporting economy in the world, and that org is run by the biggest Nazi’s (literally if you saw those pics last year!). Yet they still are “mainstream”, but that’s different right?

Money talks, not those so called organization puppet presidents.

by UFC Champ on May 15, 2009 10:54 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t think Max Moseley dressing up as a Nazi for sex makes him a Nazi. Ask Prince Harry! What he does in his private life’s up to him anyway and he did win substantial damages from the News of The World as the Nazi theme couldn’t be proved. He didn’t ask for it to be brought to the public attention but Dana brings everything on himself by acting like an idiot in public! If Dana’s capable of behaving the way he does in public, who knows what he gets up to in his private life???

by B_Hos on May 14, 2009 10:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with Dana in the fact that he doesn’t have time for it. All it is, is a ploy for Affliction to get some more shine from the UFC. If Dana fights Atencio, the media will be all over it, promoting as a UFC and AFFLICTION fight. Dana doesn’t want NO ONE to shine but him (and the UFC).

by GreenStar on May 14, 2009 10:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Atencio got Pwned!!!!… Dana is definitely right if you’re running a major promotion like Affliction and you’re struggling it doen’t really make sense to be fighting at the same time, training’s not a big deal but when it’s for a fight it takes away a lot of your focus.

Don’t understand why there’s so much hate for Dana. He’s awesome what other major ceo is gonna do an internet blog showing a lot of his personal life, tells you what he’s thinking directly and honestly and also brings some of the best talent through to becoming major stars… So what if he mouths of out a reporter or watever. And don’t start saying that he effects the sport going truly mainstream, because it’s gonna be main stream regardless and I think having Dana is 100x better for the sports development then having some other random

by Jye on May 14, 2009 10:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dana throws those big insults around, what a dick. He’s been opening his mouth too wide especially since that Loretta Hunt incident. And both she and Tom are nice people. I don’t know Dana, but I’m betting he’s not.

by theCloser on May 15, 2009 2:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dana should step into the ocktagon. Make him fight Big John Mccarty

by Markus on May 15, 2009 6:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dana White is obviously a good business man, I would be interested to see what he could do with a promotion like Strikeforce or Affliction. Zuffa have done wonders for the WEC (Turning it into a mini UFC) and clearly understand how to build and promote a strong brand. As far as running his mouth, part of me feels like Dana does it intentionally to bring more exposure and notoriety to the UFC, he is a huge fan of the Sopranos and behaves in a Tony-esq manner when he’s in the public eye. He tends to apply the same psychology to business as the average “Smack Talker” applies to his pre-fight interviews.

by oskarbravo on May 15, 2009 7:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dana White is a fucking faggot and a loser. If he is the man why can’t he get Fedor in the UFC? Oh yeah I forgot Fedor is over rated.

by Anderson Silva on May 15, 2009 7:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dana White was pretty interested in fighting/ boxing Tito. It looked like he was dedicating a heck of a lot of time to preparing for that. Now he is absolutely adimant that he would not devote a second to Atencio’s challenge cause he is concerned with the company. Please!!! Tito would have kicked the crap out of him and he wasn’t training for the fight with Tito anyways. He just said it himself in response to Atencio’s challenge, he should make his duties as the UFC prez. his focal point and not concern himself with some variety show fight.
