Broken leg forces Rousimar Palhares to withdraw from UFC 101 fight against Alessio Sakara

Brazilian jiu-jitsu submission specialist Rousimar Palhares was forced to withdraw from his fight against former Italian boxer Alessio Sakara that according to a report from Intheguard.tv, was signed for UFC 101 at the Wachovia Center in Philadelphia, Pa., on August 8.
"Toquinho" suffered a tibia fracture during training that required surgery.
The up-and-coming Palhares was fresh off a unanimous decision win over mixed martial arts journeyman Jeremy Horn at UFC 93 earlier this year. Prior to the win, Toquinho (which means "tree stump" in Portuguese), dropped a unanimous decision to Dan Henderson at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" on September 6.
In both performances he demonstrated just how dangerous he can be on the ground — Horn and Henderson were extremely cautious when their fights went south. Ivan Salaverry — Palhares’ first opponent inside the Octagon — was not so lucky, tapping to a super slick armbar at UFC 84: "Ill Will" back in May 2008.
Now it appears we'll have to wait a bit longer to see him mixing it up in the middleweight division.
What happens next for Sakara remains to be seen, though plenty of time remains for the UFC to find a suitable replacement.
"Legionarius" is coming off a brutal knockout of Joe Vedepo via head kick at UFC Fight Night 15 back in September 2008. It was an eye-opening finish from the heavy-handed American Top Team product to say the least.
Sakara was set to lock horns with Jake Rosholt at UFC Fight Night 17 on Feb. 7, 2009, until a late shoulder injury forced him off the card. He was then penciled in to clash with Alan Belcher at UFC 99 before "The Talent" was promoted to a showdown opposite big free agent acquisition, Yoshihiro Akiyama.
The former light heavyweight is currently (2-2) in his last four bouts and the same during his three-year career (4-4, 1 NC) with the UFC. Sakara — who historically struggles against higher-level competition — has been branded a gatekeeper of the division.
A big win on August 8 could go a long way in peeling off that label.
UFC 101 will likely feature a main event between lightweight champion BJ Penn and number one contender Kenny Florian, as well as UFC Middleweight Champion Anderson Silva, stepping up once again to compete at light heavyweight against former 205-pound champion, Forrest Griffin, in a three-round, non-title special attraction.

Toquinho is a great opponent for anyone in MW. I ‘d love to see him more active against bigger names
I don’t think he’s ready for the top strikers but in with a few more Ws he’s gonna be mentioned with the Maias, Marquardts and Bispings

i wanted to see this fight because I am a big fan of Sakara and Toquino, but I fear that stylistically, it was going to be a boring match up. Hopefully they find a replacement thats willing to stand n Bang with Sakara!

you know what would have been a great match up for Sakara…Jason Day. That would have been a great fight. Maybe they’ll bring him back and they can go at it.
by Buster Bluth on May 9, 2009 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions
great idea Buster. I would love to see that! I think they were a little quick to let Day go. I would have gave him 1 last shot and as someone who will be live at this event, I would be happy to see Sakara vs. Day….Or they can just let Sakara and Brian Stann pumble on each others faces til one falls down!
Sakara vs. Day or Brian Stann. Make it happen!

Yeah,it’s s..ks,that we don’t get to see Toquinio and Sakara improvement…A few of predictions below are a good match up.Irvin,Quarry…I would have wanted to see him fight against the Crow, but since he’s gonne… Anyway this is out of subject but very interesting. For any of you,who want to know what is going on in the JEREMY JACKSON case…Here a resume of forum…including the mom of Jeremy and a friend of the other party!
In addition to the two counts of forcible rape, Jackson was charged with kidnapping to commit another crime, first-degree residential burglary, assault with a firearm, dissuading a witness by force or threat, and criminal threats. At his initial arraignment, three additional charges — all felonies — were levied against Jackson, which included two counts of sexual assault and one count of sex crimes (aggravated circumstances). NEXT COURT DATE
Case # 2008026337 Court Date: May 28 2009 1:30PM
CURRENT HOUSING LOCATION
Housing Location: MJ-2-SG
Visiting allowed: YES on 05/07/2009 Momita: Jeremy weighs maybe 155 now, he is so pale he’s almost transparent, dark circles under his eyes, yet he tells me try not to worry… yea right.
His public defender wants him to plead to 25 years instead of 75 to life. Yet he hasn’t called one friend or anyone else to question them on what they know.
His bail is 1 million dollars. He has been in jail, secluded since June, almost a year ago. He doesn’t let me visit often, says he can’t stand to see me cry, I try not to, but I’m watching him shrink, I see no hope in his eyes. When he shuffles in, his hands are chained to a chain belt, connected to his feet. If he drops the phone, it takes him a coupla minutes to maneuver it back up to his ear.
he is not guilty of what she says, he is guilty of being stupid concerning her.
Jeremy hasn’t even been arraigned yet…. it was postponed again last Thursday, because his public defender hasn’t had a chance to look at the new charges….. Nanook:
I’m a friend of the other party here. Let me reiterate a few things.
Number 1, this girl is the last person on earth who would be considered an MMA groupie, or a groupie of ANY kind for that matter. In fact, she knew jack about the sport prior and still isn’t exactly what you’d call an arduent follower now.
Number 2, she has zero history of mental instability, contrary to what you’ve heard otherwise. In fact, she’s one of the most mentally strong and stable minded people I’ve ever met in my life.
Third, the issue with her daughter? That’s pretty funny, because I talk to her too and she has repeatedly said, and would likely do so under oath, that nothing of that sort EVER happened.
I’m not going to respond with my thoughts on the “I almost wish he killed her” comment. Don’t think I need to more than I already have.
Lastly, rape is a pretty serious thing. Yes, you have cases like the girl who cried wolf on the Duke lacrosse team, however just as many go without justice getting served. For every person who wrongly cried wolf, many, many more have been done wrong by the justice system and have had their attackers walk scott free.
I thought very highly of Jeremy as a fighter and moreso as a person. I never have had one ill word to say about the guy, even AFTER this took place. However, I’ve heard the party in question’s name slugged through the mud and quite honestly I felt the need to at least speak on behalf of the other party. Momita: ok,let me rephrase that… he would get less if he had killed her. Almost wishing something isn’t very nice, is it? I was told the best way to find out if she had a watch dog on here was to post…they were right. Nanook:
Watch dog? No ma’am. I’m not a watch dog for anyone. See of my 2,000 plus posts; how many of them have been in threads regarding this topic? Very few. If anything, I tried to keep out of it, despite hearing my friend called a slut, a whore, a psycho, and those were some of the NICE things people were saying.
When it comes to issues where a good friend is having her character put in to question by attempts of justification, or whatever logic may be used behind this thread, I felt that someone needed to tell the other side of the story.
Granted, 75 percent of the people won’t take it worth a pound of salt anyhow, because they think MMA fighters walk on water and do no wrong, as I found out the hard way in the threads where people tried to justify Justin Levens killing his wife. However, if the 25 percent who put their personal feelings of the sport to the backburner and look at the real picture here, were able to read it and see the other side of the coin, then frankly I’m satisfied enough.
Momita:
As for her daughter saying that never happened, I was not the only one present Nanook.
Nanook:
Honestly, I’d just as soon see the children left out of it. They’ve gone through enough and to drag teenage kids in to this issue is in pretty poor taste. They’ve already been through enough. However, if push came to shove and it is needed, I have no doubts that the child in question would speak on behalf of her mother in a truthful manner.
Momita:
Hope you’re tongue recovers.
Nanook:
Thank you Momita. Lend me some ice? Nanook: I’m not her legal counsel, I’m her friend. If I was her legal counsel however, I surely wouldn’t be posting anything here regarding this matter. I don’t know too many people of judicial backgrounds and who have passed any kind of state bar who would post legal advice or case evidence on an internet message board that has over 40,000 people posting in it. What I am is someone who is and will be a friend to the victim, and will not be blinded by Jeremy’s “celebrity status” as a Mixed Martial Artist like so many others have.
Those who are much more valuable to this case than I have all the information and evidence they need. Justice will be served, and for those of you praying for it? Believe me, I’m praying for the same thing.
Lastly, understand something. I don’t have ill will towards Jeremy. Not one ounce. I had nothing but good things to say about him before and while I vehenimately despise the actions he pulled, I still think of him in a non hateful manner. In truth? I hope the guy gets the help he has desperately needed for awhile and uses this to turn his life around, whether that be behind bars or not. I want that for all parties, yes including and especially you Momita.
Nanook:
Yes. She is a bright kid, who is more than capable of speaking for herself. She will speak for herself in regards to the incident in question.
Again though, I’d just as soon rather see the kids get left out of this mess Momita: I edited my posts. Not because I doubt any of what I posted but because I’ve gotten 15 emails begging me to take them off. Nanook: I believe her 110 percent… and I’m going off a lot more than words spoken. I’ll merely leave it at that.
And no, I’m not judging Jeremy personally, like some have done with the victim. Other guy: what if he is proven innocent and your friend a vindictive liar?
Nanook: If Jeremy is proven innocent, I’ll personally send the guy an engraved apology and admit that I was wrong. Other guy: how do you explain her going back to him after the first ‘rape’? Nanook:
I will say this. Read up on abused spouses sometime. The number of women who return to their husband after acts of abuse is much, much higher than those who leave.
No, I’m not elaborating, or giving some deep inside look at the relationship issues the two had, despite the fact that so many of you probably want just that. Fact is, the information that is private knowledge now is for the court lawyers to battle it out over. I’m not involved in the issue in that manner, and I’m not going to give private information out on a public forum.
What I am pointing out however is that it’s not exactly “abnormal” for a girl to go back to her attacker, like some of you have made it out to sound. http://157.145.215.163/inmateinquiry/inmatesearchdetail.aspx?id=1158195

Jeremy Jackson is one of the several recent MMA disasters, if he has done what he is accused of doing then he is sick and deserves to rot in jail but I feel sorry for his family and his victim. I’m getting worried with all of these negative stories involving MMA fighters, whilst people have to take responsibility for their actions I do hope that there is greater protection for struggling fighters so that there are less tragedies.

This could be only the first of many card changes for 101. Hopefully this event doesn’t have the curse like 98 does, but then again i’m not attending this one so I guess i really couldn’t care less.

i know injurys happen during trainning and all that but is it just me or does it seem like its becoming more and more common, there never used to be this many injurys, are these guys just pushing themselves to hard or what
by hughes on May 9, 2009 6:26 AM EDT reply actions
yeah for sure man, i think now that the level of competition is increasing fighters are pushing themselves to the max in training which leads to all these injuries we hear about. sucks really but its what you have to do to survive as a fighter

Hey Hughes your right…I’m a Strength and Conditioning coach and most camps don’t know or a have the money to hire a qualified trainer who knows about cycling training so that fighters don’t get hurt…this is ridiculous!!!!!! I’m going to this event and Sakara brings it. Hope that find a replacement and stays on the card.

The UFC has also been handing out pink slips like candy, I’m sure that has alot to do with it as well.

why are UFC fighters going down lately? Must be the increased pressure to perform.
by elstiko on May 9, 2009 10:35 AM EDT reply actions
Get Jason MacDonald back in there. Striker (Sakara) vs. Grappler is always good.
by Redravi7 on May 9, 2009 12:51 PM EDT reply actions
No its not…there most likely boring… put sakara against someone that will bang with him and there will be an exiting fight… Someone like cote, or nate quarry.
by mike22 on May 9, 2009 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions
Shame for Palhares, he would have beaten Sakara easily because any BJJ fighter with a good chin and takedowns can beat Sakara. This is good news for Alessio though, he was almost certainly going to lose this fight so now he has the chance to fight someone who stylistically matches up better for him, as he’s a loss away from being cut.
I’m also worried about the numerous injuries happening, something is obviously not right with the training when athletes are constantly injuring themselves. They must be being pushed too hard for their bodies to cope with. Hopefully the trainers and the fighters will learn to not overtrain sooner rather than later because this is not helping the longevity of the fighters by any means.
