The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9: Episode 6 recap and discussion

Episode six of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 9 gets underway and the discussion immediately turns to Michael Bisping, who come fight time last week was harder to find than Carmen Sandiego.

At the fight announcement, lo and behold Coach Bisping arrives to pick the fights: Lightweights Martin Stapleton vs. Cameron Dollar.

Team UK finds no flaws in "Stapes" game and think it should be a relatively easy fight. Dollar feels the power of the hat-tilt will prevail.

Bisping comes over to make amends with Amasinger and the best he can come up with is that he overslept. Amasinger is too nice to kick him in the nads so they smile and go on their merry way.

Stapes grinds it out in practice and compares notes with Bisping. The strategy is to stuff the takedowns and strike him into a bloody mess. Stapes is still mad over the UK team's first loss and vows revenge.

Back at the house, Stapes talks shit armed with some carrots and celery. He seems to be rather chipper while Dollar is an anxiety filled mess.

Dollar hits the gym and gets some polishing from Coach Henderson. Hendo forces him to train striking and Dollar resists, admitting that he's horrible at it. It's strangely reminiscent of last season when Roli Delgado had no idea how to manipulate the speed bag.

Star-divide

We then get the most gratuitous piano solo since "The Lonely Man" as the gang waxes poetic about life as a fighter and the sacrifices that come with it. I kept expecting Stapes to pass through in faded blue jeans and a dingy backpack looking for a ride out of town.

Pre-fight hype in the locker room shows Stapes with nerves of steel while Dollar is scared of his own shadow.

Lightweight elimination fight #2: Martin Stapleton (5-1) vs. Cameron Dollar (4-1)

Round 1: Jab by Stapleton. Low kick by Dollar. They clinch and Stapleton takes a nasty punch to the back of the head that buckles him. He gets his footing and drives Dollar to the cage. Dollar goes down but gets right back up dumps Stapleton to the ground. Dollar takes his back and rains down punches. Dollar flattens him out and attempts a rear naked but Stapleton defends and breaks free. Dollar still has hooks in and reapplies the choke, this time landing it for the tap.

Cameron Dollar defeated Martin Stapleton via submission (rear naked choke)

Bisping is shocked and Hendo laps up every bit of devastation on his face. Stapes looks shell-shocked. Dollar gets all gangsta back in the locker room and enjoys his big win.

Coach Henderson presides over the next fight announcement and chooses welterweights Frank Lester vs. James Wilks.

In training the Brits think Wilks is getting underestimated. Considering Lester called him "a pussy on his feet," I think that's a safe assumption. Wilks doesn't want to make the same mistake so trains for both standing and grappling.

The US boys talk tough in the comforts of the mansion and call Wilks out for living in Orange County for the past ten years and not really being a Brit. Santino DeFranco likes that Lester acts like a loon.

Damarques Johnson offers a $100 bounty for every one of Wilks teeth Lester can knock out. Charming.

Hendo's big advice for the fight is "Stick and move." I wonder if he's been playing Mike Tyson's Punchout prior to his training sessions. Unfortunately he can't press Select in between rounds so hopefully he has something else to offer.

Welterweight elimination fight #3: Frank Lester (3-2) vs. James Wilks (5-2)

Round 1: They touch gloves and Wilks reaches in for a jab. Lester swings wildly. Wilks backs him up with a combo. They exchange a few soft kicks and punches and Wilks eats a hard punch on the exit. Lester bouncing around and Wilks is flat-footed. Lester drops him with some punches but gets caught in a heel hook when he tries to mount. Lester escapes but tumbles backwards and Wilks is right there to jump on top of him. They struggle for position and Wilks gets side control. Wilks tries to pass and eats an upkick. Lester stands as Wilks tries for a guillotine and gets an airball instead. Lester rocks him with punches. Wilks lands a knee in the clinch and pushes him to the cage. They take a breather. Lester with a failed trip. They look gassed. Back to the cage. Nice knee to the face by Wilks. These guys are spent. Wilks with a sloppy takedown. They remain in missionary position and the horn sounds just as Wilks secures an arm triangle choke.

Round 2: Lester mumbles something about his tooth and doesn't answer the bell. Bisping goes berserk on Mazzagatti to make him fight or stop the bout for failure to answer the bell. F-bomb detonates. Apparently Lester got his teeth knocked out and cant get the mouthpiece on -- because they're still lodged in the mouthpiece.

The ringside doctor does an onsite extraction and he's good to go. They touch gloves. For some reason that amused me. Wilks eats a jab and answers with one of his own. Wilks with a low kick. Soft head kick for Wilks. "Hands tight!" Bisping screams for the hundredth time. Wilks shoots in and pushes him to the cage but gets stuffed. Wilks lands a series of uppercuts but Lester won't budge. Wilks changes levels and drops him. They stand up and take turns whaling on each other. Wilks throws him to the ground and jumps into side control. He easily mounts and when Lester leaves an opening, Wilks slaps on a textbook armbar for the tap.

James Wilks defeated Frank Lester via submission (armbar)

Lester had four teeth knocked out in the fight -- which by my calculations puts him $400 in the hole.

Karma, she is a bitch.

Stay tuned next week as we get a crash course in infection control, someone gets the Triple H treatment and eats a sledgehammer, and yet another two fight episode! Hoo-wah!

See you in seven!

Dude, I’ve never seen karma be such a b_tch like it was in that episode!!! The first time some homeboys take a bounty out on the opposition’s teeth and then their boy loses 4 teeth!!! There’s only a handful of times I’ve ever even been aware of a fighter losing teeth in a fight. This is a bad_ss sport. You need to be tough as h_ll to compete it in.

by RedDog on May 7, 2009 6:25 AM EDT up reply actions

I was going to write the same thing reddog! I don’t know how the first kid won, and am so glad the second guy did win. I’m not trying to learn these douche bags names yet, but I’ll say this, I’m liking this season…when the UK guys are on TV. The americans are kinda lame, but I am glad there hasn’t been any gay ass pranks!

by kevin on May 7, 2009 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

Cameron Dollar with the upset! That kid didn’t even look great in his prelinary bout to get in the house. He was laying on his stomach, mounted, getting punched in the head repeatedly and his head looked like it was on a pivot rocking back and forth. When I mentioned it to friends that watched, they remembered as well.

UFC did a good job hyping Stapes making us think he was the real deal.

Did anyone else’s DVR pick up the end of that deadly warrior show or whatever? I always see the last minute of it on my dvr, and this week it was a Ninja vs a Spartan and the Spartan won. Then at the end, they show some Asian guy say “Yeah, but if a ninja ever saw a Spartan they would run away, and then come back and kill them in their sleep”. LOL, tough guys, huh? This show is to find the deadliest warrior of all time, and the ninjas are like “we are b*tches and we run away from a fight and sneak up on you while you’re sleeping, so we can beat ANYONE”. I don’t know, I found it funny. Don’t know how well I typed it, but hopefully someone else saw it and thought it was funny.

by ViolentMike on May 7, 2009 11:26 AM EDT up reply actions

I find it smart Mike…my motto, no such thing as a cheap shot if there are no rules!

by kevin on May 7, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

ViolentMike – Technically, Ninjas are assassins and they would attack someone from behind (in the dark) or in their sleep. They wouldn’t go up to a Samurai with a shitload of armor and a big sword and say "I’m going to kill you with my tiny ninja stars and sword." So the only reason why I think your laughing is out of your own stupidity.
Thanks,
Jaymzz

lol man that first fight was domination, and i hope frank lester puts a beating on this UK guy cuz frankies one of my favorite guys

by JG on May 6, 2009 10:43 PM EDT up reply actions

REALLY? A Frank Lester fan. First I’ve seen!

He showed a lot of heart this fight, but I wish that other kid didn’t KO himself when he slammed Lester becasue he was winning the first couple mins of that fight.

I’m still sticking with my original gut feeling that Andre Winner is the stud of the season.

by ViolentMike on May 7, 2009 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah Andre Winner or Ross Pearson. Pearson is a savage.

wow cameron dropped stapes, that was a good fight and cameron actually dominated.

WAR USA

by Clinton Jackson (formerly Jared) on May 6, 2009 10:29 PM EDT reply actions

He did hit him straight in the back of the head though, but it didn’t seem to have an impact.

I got Cameron as one of Team USA’s good guys (along with Shaun White, Jason Dent, and Damarcus), but I was really surprised because I thought Stapes was one of TEAM UK’s better guys.

by Synyster on May 6, 2009 10:33 PM EDT up reply actions

I knew the friend’s-wife-banging douchebag was going to win as soon as I saw that the Spike editors were playing up the “Dollar is a scared little pussy and Stapleton is a bad-ass marine destroyer” angle. Way to stay predictable, TUF.

by Jeremyjackson on May 6, 2009 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha! The drama!

by Syd[a.k.a."The Negation"] on May 7, 2009 12:33 AM EDT up reply actions

I had the exact same reaction while watching it JJ. Disappointing when they’re that transparent.

by GregC on May 7, 2009 3:49 AM EDT up reply actions

I missed another episode of tUF. I usually go to a local college bar every wednesday night, so I missed the episode. Last night I wanted to take a break from partying and I just stayed in planning to watch TUF….UNFORTUNATELY I fell asleep before 9:00

WTF, am I ever going to miss an episode.

Reading the recap, I am kind of happy I missed it. i couldnt sit through watching that Idiot Cameron win fights!

I would love to fight that dude~! I would do it in a heart beat if I could get down to that weight!

by john on May 7, 2009 10:00 AM EDT up reply actions

Cameron was straight up TERRIFIED to fight.

Even after winning, in the lockerroom, he was still saying how scared he was.

Fighters should get nervous before a fight, but I know I wouldnt want to be scared before fighting in the octagon.

by ViolentMike on May 7, 2009 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I think this cat has a chance to go far in the UFC if he can continue to evolve. He is young.

I am noticing that the producers of TUF like to play mind games. They show Lester hatin on his opponant wanting to knock his teeth out, he get’s he teeth knocked out (classic!), Dollar being showed as a nervous wreck, man handled his opponant & wins, US team was supposed to turn on each other, none of that happened.

Dana…just show some gawd damn fights without the drama.

by Neeko on May 7, 2009 8:46 AM EDT up reply actions

Didnt see that coming Dolla definately dominated that one i thought it was gunna go 2 rounds forsure…. i guess i was wrong lol

by curt on May 6, 2009 10:43 PM EDT reply actions

Thought Dollar was gonna get eaten alive. Dude is pretty good though. First shot that rocked Stapes was right in the back of the head, just one of those things.

James vs. Frank. Good fight, wanted the US to win, but whatever, it was between two guys who have no chance of winning the show lol.

by rockwell on May 6, 2009 11:00 PM EDT reply actions

Did I hear right Bisping asks a team uk guy “howd you hit urself with the hammer”on the preveiw for next week hahahaha thats halarious

by curt on May 6, 2009 11:03 PM EDT reply actions

Damarcus should pay James $400 bones for those teeth…I’m glad Frank is done.

by MM_Eh on May 6, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

I love that they are showing two fights a show!!! Pretry cool!!

by blackBEERd on May 6, 2009 11:26 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think they’re showing two fights next week, though. They said at the end, “two more fighters” not “two more fights.” There’s only 7 fights left and 6 episodes, so there’s only going to be one with two fights and that will probably be the last one with the semifinals.

by the king adrock on May 7, 2009 10:23 AM EDT up reply actions

Mr.Holland you are too bright to be writing recaps for the ultimate fighter reality show.

by Bryce on May 6, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

Didnt think Dollar had a chance but he pulled it off . Good for him and good for US. Dollar was pretty nervous before he got in there, he needs to work on his mental game.

Its pretty ironic that Wilks is from the UK and is fighting out of Laguna Hills, CA. That sort of takes away the spark of US vs. UK , when the UK guy has been living in the US for yrs. The fight between Wilks and Lester was awesome. That was great when they showed Hendo using pliers to get Lesters teeth out of his mouthpiece. As far as Lester goes, besides his heart, his skills were limited. He didnt throw one kick, didnt try one sub., and didnt really have good stamina. He was just throwing huge bar-room punches that really dont belong in the UFC. Hopefully he works on his game and gets invited back to the UFC though, just b/c he is a crazy dude and didnt give up.

by robbyc on May 6, 2009 11:30 PM EDT reply actions

It is definitely ironic, Robby. Could they not find another decent competitor in the UK? It just looks bad for the Brits to have to use someone who hasn’t been living there.

by Dana's a CrossDresser on May 7, 2009 1:20 AM EDT up reply actions

No worse than Rampage training in the UK or GSP at Greg Jackson’s camp. Talk like a Brit, born in the UK, think like a Brit… you’ze a BRIT!!!

by Neeko on May 7, 2009 8:52 AM EDT up reply actions

But Rampage is represting Team UK as they battle Team USA.

And if GSP only stayed in Canada to train, he would not be at the level he is at.

If the UFC has a USA vs Canada PPV again and had GSP on team USA fighting Jonathon Goulet from team Canada, then you would make sense.

Or USA vs UK and its Rampage vs Forrest with Rampage repping team UK….

by ViolentMike on May 7, 2009 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

Rampage trains in the UK is he not american?

by Nick J on May 7, 2009 8:53 AM EDT up reply actions

Yes, that’s my point..the Brit lives in the US to train… he is still a Brit, just like Page is still an American.. or GSP a Canadian

by Neeko on May 7, 2009 8:55 AM EDT up reply actions

Ha sorry mate, i posted that at the same time as you, was responding to the comment above yours.

by Nick J on May 7, 2009 9:21 AM EDT up reply actions

Rampage isn’t on team USA. Of course Wilks is still a Brit. But, if you’re gonna play on the whole “Team USA vs. Team UK” thing, using a fighter that has lived in the opposing nation of all places, causes the theme to lose a lot of flavor. It would be different if he had been living in Japan, etc. I would feel the same way if Page was on Team UK!

dollar is counterfeit!!!..lol..and i too was secretly glad frankie ate teeth..2 fights per episode should be standard..bisping better eat more humble pie over sleeping in on one of his fighters..hendo sure is a mellow mutha..

Loved how Hendo’s response to Frank was “lost your teeth, look like me”. haha! Classic!!!

“dollar is counterfeit” = I LOVE IT

by ViolentMike on May 7, 2009 11:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Bah, that first fight was garbage. Stapleton got hit hard enough in the back of the head/neck that his knees buckled – everything after that was essentially meaningless.

I don’t care that he managed to keep on going, it’s the referee’s job to look out for the fighters and do the right thing. (it’s not like, in the heat of the moment, the fighters will necessarily even know how and where they got hit, and be able to object to being hit illegally) In the case of a knockdown from an (unintentional) illegal blow, the result should have been a time-out and a restart.

by MattNY on May 7, 2009 12:23 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah, it looked like he never recovered from that shot.

by Jeremyjackson on May 7, 2009 12:31 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think it was an illegal hit. If a punch lands on the back of a fighters head when the 2 are facing each other, and the guy that got hit was trying to duck the punch, it is just bad timing. GSP got dropped by a punch that landed behind the head by Serra, but it was perfectly legal.

by naturalshadow on May 7, 2009 1:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Perfectly stated naturalshadow.

If Dollar had him mounted and smashed him in the back of the head it would be one thing. They were both facing each other, Stapes moved in and Dollar just threw a punch that happened to hit hit right in the back of the head.

MattNY, if a punch like that was grounds for a restart your boy Serra would never be champ!!! Not sure if you like Serra at all just your name fits well haha.

by WB on May 7, 2009 8:27 AM EDT up reply actions

When a fighter throws an inside leg kick and the other guy steps into it and gets hit in the nuts, it’s still an illegal blow and they call a time out.

When a fighter throws a punch that barely misses but his thumb grazes the other guy’s eye, it’s an illegal blow and they call a time out.

When a fighter starts throwing a kick or a knee to the head when his opponent is on his feet, but by the time it lands the opponent has touched a knee to the ground, it’s an illegal kick to the head of a grounded opponent, and they call a time out.

There’s tons of way to land unintentional illegal blows – they don’t result in point deductions or disqualifications, but that doesn’t make them legal. The procedure for dealing with them all is the same – stop the fight, give the other guy a chance to recover.

For whatever reason, though, referees are just terrible at spotting those looping blows to the back of the neck. Could be that they’re easy to see on TV given the camera angle, less so in the cage… but they happen so often, you’d think they’d figure it out eventually.

Bottom line, though, is that I have no interest in watching fights decided through dumb luck. I want to see people go out there and take it, not get lucky because the other guy knocks himself out in a bad takedown, or accidentally gets clubbed across the back of the neck by a guy who can’t even hit a pad in sparring.

by MattNY on May 7, 2009 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

That sucks loos a fight and get your teeth knoked out in national tv actually its a lot better then what happened to the guy who ate sushi covered in cum man that was brutal and then says he cant be knoked out and gets knocked out in the bathroom and then denies it!!!!!

Bisping, what a lame excuse… “I slept in”

Does he not care about the guys, and the trainers should get him off his rear too. Just bad publicity.

Then to curse and yell an official like that ( I am afraid if I were the referee I would kick his a$$ out of there and tell him to wash his potty mouth)

From Last week (You would think you would spend a week training whats his face to get out of triangles… Man what a predictable ending to that fight)

Dollar= I hate him but he was good. Staples =I wish he would have won. It was a good fight with some scrambling so I am not disappointed.

James was the better fighter but I felt any minute he would get KTFO and I think hes not gonna make it by the next fight.

The whole hammer incident sounds stupid…

by SHAMWOW on May 7, 2009 6:54 AM EDT reply actions

I agree, he talks like he does nothing but run his mouth constantly, bashes other peoples fights, act like a tool, and now this sleeping in non sense? WTF kind of excuse is that? You left one of your guys hanging hi and dry, and thats all you come up with. How does anyone like this ego maniac, shit talking ass hole

by lokie on May 7, 2009 10:24 AM EDT up reply actions

I thought Bisping would have gotten more heat for not showing up for the fight, especially after the preview for this weeks episode.

He whispers sweat nothings into Mr. T’s ear for 5 seconds and everyone is all jolly again?

by ViolentMike on May 7, 2009 11:38 AM EDT up reply actions

yh i totally agree that was the lamest excuse i have ever heard, im surprised dana did’nt have any words to say about that. im happy that Dollar won, ciz he is a good up n comin fighter i think team uk underestimated him.Im also happy that Frankie lost because he got into the house by default and i wanted james to smash him
