It's Anderson Silva's ego vs Roy Jones' wallet in a UFC match that 'Hurts MMA'

Props: CBS Sports
Quoteworthy:
"You won't see a Silva versus Jones fight while Silva is under contract with me. I could do it, make it huge, make money, but I could have done a fight like this when we were bleeding money [in the early 2000s]. The fight would make some money, but it hurts MMA in the long term. We don't do that because we love the sport. That's a Pride or K-1 matchup. It's not what we do. I don't want to say anything bad about Roy Jones, I like Roy Jones and was a fan of his, but he mattered like fifteen years ago. He's not anywhere near the best boxer in the world. He must've spent all his money."
UFC President Dana White rejects an offer from Roy Jones Jr. to fight Anderson Silva inside the Octagon under MMA rules to help expedite the "Dream fight" between one of MMA's best and one of boxing's used-to-be-the-best. "The Spider" first mentioned his interest in the sweet science after he dispatched of Dan Henderson at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" in March 2008. And there is perhaps no boxer who has accomplished more in the sport in the past decade and a half than Jones Jr., although he could be considered past his prime despite winning four of his last five bouts. Is Anderson getting too big for his britches? Or does he have the stuff to hang with the boxing legend? Silva still has some mopping up to do on his current Zuffa contract before we can find out - unless he pulls a Randy Couture and jumps ship early to try and fight his fantasy foe.

still think this matchup is stupid. jones jr. would beat silva very easily in a boxing bout. id like to see anderson get koed though due to his past performances

me and my buddy were talking about this during silvas fight.. we were thinking that roy is watching and he wants to show is boxing skills aswell as his mma.. he didn’t want to hit the mat w/ thales and was kinda showbaot w/ cote… he just might be trying to transition inot boxing and leave the ufc .. it’s not like if he hasn’t accomlphished much.

Roy and Silva probably worked out an agreement where if Roy can get into the Octagon and fight him, they will keep it stand up and only box. Once inside the Octagon they can fight anyway they want. That’s what Dana is afraid of. Because under MMA rules if this was for real for real, Anderson would destroy him. But if they have a gentleman’s agreement to box it out then it’s a match up that favors Roy although with 4 ounce gloves and Sliva’s accuracy, it’s anyone’s chance. Dana would rather not risk it and I agree. The risk doesn’t out weigh the reward.

I thought we were all in consensus about having Anderson fight RELEVANT and TOP 205 lb MMA FIGHTERS, not boxers. What the hell would a fight with Jones do for his career? As opposed to a fight with Rashad or Rampage or Shogun?
GTFO of here with that kind of talk. This fight SHOULD NOT happen.

This fight is never going to happen. I completely see Dana Whites point of view. Its got an air of freak show / extraveganza about it.
They learnt theit lesson with Hughes vs Gracie. These fantasy matchups just turn out horrible.

This fight WIL NEVER HAPPEN IN THE UFC!!!! I agree with Nick J on this, and forget about the whole freak show deal. DANA is talkin money, and if Roy does not have that much money like Dana Say’s, I bet Roy would be asking for a whole lot of money to fight MMA rules, Dana wont have it! he outs the UFC at risk of another Hughs vs. Gracie, and will prob have Roy asking for WAY more to fight than Dana gave Hughs or Royce COMBINED! thats what i think anyways. Freak Show + Boxer asking for the MILLIONS he demands = bad for Biz!

Anderson cant retire, as his contract would still be binding and would be unable to fight anywhere else. He has to fulfill his last 4 fights, however, if he stays champ, it keeps getting extended, so this will get real interesting….especially if he suddenly loses in an unimpressive way.

Dana may have some legitimate points, but he still had to be a huge douchebag about it bringing Roy’s money up. Why is that necessary? Not only does Dana not know about his finances, but even if he’s right what the hell is the point in trying to dog the man out? What a classless prick.
by Diceman on May 6, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t believe for a second that if this fight were to take place in the Octagon, it would ever hit the ground.
Silva would beat Jones up on the ground as badly as Jones would whup Silva in a boxing match.
Dana probably knows that there would be an unspoken agreement to keep it standing. And I doubt he feels like doing Anderson any favors after Anderson took a dump on his main event last month. Additionally, how bad does it make the UFC look if their P4P champ is destroyed by an over-the-hill boxer?
This fight belongs outside the UFC, in a boxing ring. Jones is not an MMA fighter, he doesn’t belong in the octagon. Silva seems to think he’s a boxer, let him find out for himself that he’s not in Roy’s league when it comes to throwing hands. I’ll tell you one thing, Anderson… when you don’t throw a punch for three minutes in a boxing match, it isn’t going to go over very well.

by Randy for Couture on May 6, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions
I dont really understand your arguments at all guys. Do you honestly think that RJJ would have any chance at all EVEN if they had an agreement to keep the fight STANDING? That means boxing AND elbows, kicks and knees?! Anderson would MURDER him within 30 sec. Have you seen ever seen a fight between a kickboxer/thai and a boxer. its soooo funny. The first kick to the leg, the boxer acts like nothing, second to the leg and he’s like “damn thats hurts” the third… he tries to block it with his hand and gets a headkick and goes to sleep. Seen it like 10 times in our gym!
So you guys MUST mean basically boxing with MMA-gloves!
by c_mon on May 6, 2009 6:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Pretty sure none of the boxers in your gym have the ridiculous talent and hand speed of Jones, or have won multiple world titles.
In a kickboxing match Jones would be at a disadvantage, to be sure, but I wouldn’t write Roy off. He is so much faster and slicker with his hands that he might get the KO before Silva could land a kick or secure the clinch.

40 year old Roy ‘Irrelevant’ Jones Jr would get killed by Silva. I’m glad Dana want’s to steer clear of this freakshow. Maybe after Silva’s contract is up they can have this fight in Alabama somewhere.

I do not know if you are a boxing gafn or just an MMA fan, I like both. Silva fighting Jones in a boxing match would have no bearing or effect on MMA at all, becuase there would be know MMA involved. You only have to look at how well boxers have done in K1 and the Golden Gloves boxers we have had in the UFC to know that with those skills alone, the chances are you will not have a very succesful career. Roy Jones may be irrelevant now but even if Jones was a quarter of the boxer he once was, he would still be too much for Silva. Silva can box, but he is far from having the skills of a professional boxer, let alone someone of Jones’s status no matter how old he is. Even though this match could generate a good amount of money, money is the last thing on Andersons mind (obviously not Dana’s), he has always dreamed of fighting Jones, and would porbably still want to do it if there was no money involve. It’s all about testing his abilities and chalenging himself.Dana seems to think that all all people are motivated by money just because that is the only thing that motivates him. Cross promote you bald headed wanker and use the best fighters in the world as you like to say so often, to take out the best your competition has to offer.

This fight is pointless, kind of like when Royce came back and fought Matt Hughes. A guy in his prime fighting a guy past his prime is really nothing I personally care to see, weather it be boxing or MMA.
And yes, I am a boxing fan. But it is clearly evident that boxing is on a steady decline. Boxing is in no way on the level that it used to be.

So he was asking to fight Anderson in the UFC, under boxing rules, or MMA rules or some kind of special rules ala Cro Cop vs Wandi 1?? Either way it doesn’t make any sense; the UFC would never do a boxing match; and Jones would get destroyed in an MMA fight vs Silva.

Back in the early days of the UFC, this made sense. Remember the original idea behind the UFC, was to determine which of the martial arts or competive fighting styles were truly superior. However, that question is no longer part of the equasion for MMA.
It has become it’s own incredible hybrid of all the best aspects of fighting and Martial arts. As soon as you remove that element it loses it’s appeal (IMO)
It may not be the popular stance, but I don’t ever want to see an untrained MMA fighter in the UFC for any reason.
…and begin with the obvious jabs at various UFC fighters with questionable MMA training.
Rudiger, Starnes, etc

RJJ has fought men that were undefeated and made them look like they’d never fought before. RJJ could get off a multi punch combo as silva was shooting in and it’d be over. he’d get KO’d as he was going for the takedown. yes silva could get roy down, but could he get him down b4 he gets KO’d. i doubt it. any Pro boxer gets 4,5,6 good shots in on u with 4 ounce gloves, ur gettin KO’d

So Jones’ manager, McGee Wright, approached Jones a few weeks ago, and asked him if he’d consider fighting Silva on his turf, in an Octagon.
Jones agreed, McGee told CBSSports.com. So a pumped-up McGee reached out to Silva’s manager, Soares, and Soares was excited as well.
“He said Silva would do it, fight Roy in an MMA fight,” Wright said.
Soares then contacted White, and from there, Wright says, the plan for a boxing/MMA crossover megafight was derailed. Late last week, Wright says, he and Soares touched base and Soares reported that White wasn’t keen on a Silva vs. Jones MMA tussle.
Wright is slightly perplexed. “I would’ve though Dana would’ve been happy to do it, after last year he said he wanted Sean Sherk to fight Floyd Mayweather,” Wright said. “The pay per view of Jones against Silva would be in line with the results from the [May 2008] De La Hoya/Floyd Mayweather fight,” he says of the showdown which broke buys and revenue records.

Answer the question….are you scared of the UFC?
*Right. That’s why we were the first major MMA site outside of Sherdog to do independent coverage of K-1 (which everyone now does), and why we brought Stefan on board to have a dedicated guy covering DREAM and Sengoku. He also does Shooto and ZST when he can. Probably also why I’m going to Strikeforce on June 6 for live coverage – because we are anti anything non-UFC. Oh and don’t forget Mania’s live coverage from Bellator. Annnnnd my live coverage from the EliteXC events.
Maybe you forgot that when I started in 2006 it was to cover PRIDE? And that we had a dedicated PRIDE site in the works before they went under? All that was done because we live in fear of Dana White.

Of course Roy Jones Jr would destroy any MMA fighter in a boxing match just like any MMA fighter could destroy Jones in an MMA match. This match up wouldn’t make any sense unless either Jones or Silva dedicated themselves to MMA or boxing respectively. It’s as ridiculous as Enzo Maccarinelli claiming he could dominate the UFC without any wrestling or BJJ training. MMA is no longer a one discipline sport so if you’re not well rounded you get beat, just as an MMA fighter wouldn’t have the boxing skills to make an impact unless they trained full-time with a top boxing trainer e.g. Arlovski training with Freddie Roach.
I’m a big Anderson Silva fan and have defended him countless times and whilst a mega fight with Roy Jones Jr would make a lot of money, it wouldn’t work in the UFC. It also isn’t worth blowing a successful MMA career is there are still several big fights for Silva in the sport. Calzaghe proved that Jones is well past his best so he won’t be around much longer but one superfight with a washed up boxer is not worth blowing a legendary MMA career.

I don’t think ANY MMA fighter would destroy RJJ in a MMA match. If RJJ has any TDD he could KTFO just about anyone in the UFC. Remember, he wears 12oz gloves not 4. Don’t forget how slick and elusive he can be also.

any one who saw jones in his last fight knows he still has it, and would destroy silva in a boxing match, and his age is the only thing holding him back from being a top boxer. boxers make so much bank, pack man just got like 15 mill to box 2 rounds, and jones was the biggest name for a long time, im sure he is loaded, and has plenty left over. This fight is bad for mma because boxing fans are always saying that boxers are the better fighters, we mma fans know that they are only better at one aspect of fighting, but tell that to the die hard boxing fan, however this would almost prove their point.

And yet with all our faults you keep coming back for more…

No doubt man, go away introvert. Blazy actually had a pretty good comment. Stop making this about your lack of research, if you come on this site just to comment then nobody needs you. This site is for gathering information on news relavant to MMA and since just copying and pasting an article is illegal, Mania needs to give credit to other sites and provide links to them. Stop being a sour puss.

roy jones in an mma bout? they’ll never be able to afford him, how is this even news then? any way i still see jones knocking out anderson unless he takes him to the ground instantly, even with kicks jones would take it. Oh and ef you o damn, who you calling dumb? i don’t have the time to read every artical, and click on every thing blue, im at work, and most times read the header, put some thing down, and come back to see how all you mma master minds try and pick it apart.
by Blazy J on May 6, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions
lol, calm down hero, it was a sarcastic shot at intro, not you.

What other site can you go to that allows you to take free shots at the author? Mania is the greatest baby. I don’t see those tightwads at Junkie mixing it up with their readers. And Sherdog bans anyone with a dissenting opinion. God bless Mania, and the USA! (wipes tear from eye)
by Jesse Holland on May 6, 2009 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha no doubt Jesse, three cheers for Mania. We already know about Cage patato too thanks to Mexi and Fiveounces gets about five posts per thread they put up. Mania is the best MMA website with the most knowledge, up to date info and best debates!

Best by far and away I think. There are a few douches to put up with…but its fun to watch them get ripped a new one.

I can hear the triumphant score building in the background as we celebrate the greatness that is MMAMANIA!
Seriously though, I don’t even bother reading another mma blogsite, ever.
Mania is quick with the news, easy to get into a thread, and small on the flashy endorsement buttons.

Am I crazy, or is it just common sense to assume that any fight in the “Octagon” with the “UFC” would be an MMA fight.
I don’t get the hostility for not posting EVERY word in an article. Move on already intro. You can pick up in the next thread. Everyone is pretty good about forgive and forget around here…usually.

dana white is the biggest douche bag ive heard of…i cant wait til a fighter gets tired of what he says and lays him out….big lawsuit to whoever does it but wouldnt mind seeing it
by buckmarley on May 6, 2009 11:42 AM EDT reply actions
I was watching it when Dana was doing kickboxercise lessons….so, how so?
by introvert on May 6, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t know maybe because MMA wasn’t mainstream while you were watching it. It was banned in most states and thought of as cockfighting. In large part TUF has everything to do with the raise of MMA not to mention you weren’t watching MMA news on sports stations on television and sites like yahoo and msn didn’t have an MMA link to information before then. I’m almost positive your ten years old so I think you trying to convince people you were watching MMA when you were 3 sounds ridiculous. If you truly were watching it back then you would understand how far it has come and all the work the UFC and Dana has put into making it a legitmate sport. Don’t get me wrong I loved PRIDE, and I love DREAM and Strikeforce and all the other orgs but they have freakshow fights and low level nobody fights on a regular basis, please explain to me who or what is to blame for the way MMA is percieved these days oh wise one

nononononono, the GREAT fighters put MMA on the map, hands down, don’t ever take any credit away from them to give to dana white
by deuce 4 on May 6, 2009 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions
Dana should require Roy Jones to enter the UFC and earn a title shot by winning some mma fights 1st. It would be a spectacle but it would be neat to see. Might even draw in some boxing fans to watch the sweet science vs mma.
by ognitinoc on May 6, 2009 1:47 PM EDT reply actions
Why doesn’t Anderson start calling out 205’s instead of very old boxers? MMA FIGHTERS SHOULDN’T BE BEGGING BOXERS FOR THE LIME LIGHT! They’re 2 seperate sports, this makes no sense…
by Robert(1) on May 6, 2009 2:15 PM EDT reply actions
$$$$$$ My friend. AS is arguably the best p4p fighter in the business, but he earns a pittance compared to Pac-Man, arguably the the best p4p boxer right now.

by Jeremyjackson on May 6, 2009 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions
damn intro got death there now! lol
seriously though i would love to see anderson ‘try’ to hang wif RJJ bu not until hes finished in the UFC, most likely he would get owned but you never know..
in saying that if Jones won critics would probably crawl from under their stones to claim how boxers were the better athletes than mixed martial artists and if by the chance silva won – they would just say that beating an old over the hill fighter meant nothing!
besides Dana is definitely not gonna help Anderson live out his drans when hes not satisfying the owner, while performing in the octagon!
by Randy for Couture on May 6, 2009 3:30 PM EDT reply actions
Not everyone that may watch a mma event will become a fan, so you have to give the “casual” fan something entertaining. Silva vs. Jones in any way will be a hit. Say what you want about Kimbo, ratings went up for CBS because of him. At the end of the day it’s all about money. Two words: Ricky Hatton.
by delldog on May 6, 2009 4:22 PM EDT reply actions
MMA don’t belong in a organization, just promotions. Then we can truly see the fights we wanna see.
by delldog on May 6, 2009 4:26 PM EDT reply actions
I cant wait for this matchup to happen. Dana White is an idiot for not putting on this event w/ Roy Jones. He’s such a control freak and he’s going to learn if he wont do it someone else will and i hope anderson does his 4 fights and leaves the UFC. He’ll have to lose his belt though because the UFC has a champion’s clause that forces champions to extend automatically.
I hope if someone else puts on this card (like Strikeforce or Affliction) and do it on PPV and they do outstanding numbers. Dana will take that shoe out his mouth.
by Panama on May 6, 2009 4:54 PM EDT reply actions
yea i get he put it on the map…but clearly he doesnt know how to run it very well…….why isnt fedor in the ufc…why doesnt he let other fighters do other things like k1…grapping matches.adcc..stuff like that…….he needs to retire let joe silva take over or someone who knows what the fans wanna see………….fedor vs brock or randy…silva vs chung le……tournaments like like bellafor shit like that we wanna see exciting stuff like that….he was dumb for puttin leites vs silva…okami should be fightin that card would have been alot better with someone who wants to fight…send all these ultimate fighter guys to wec ….theres no reason we shouldnt be watchin arona.belfort.king,mo.jz.aleverez.aoki.lil nog. hell even lawler would be exciting…he needs to quit giving randy 500000 for a 2 rn fight and sign better fighters and get rid of the weak links……
by buckmarley on May 6, 2009 5:27 PM EDT reply actions
“why doesn’t he allow fighters to go to k1?”
say anderson silva goes and fights a k1 match, throws a leg kick and it gets checked and silva’s leg breaks…better yet, make it Brock! There goes his biggest money maker out from an injury! does that make sense? My 7 year old gets it! It’s like why NFL players (a lot of them) can’t drive motorcycles or even play pick up basketball games!

AMEN!!!!!!!! the most intelligent idea i’ve heard in a long time. u think exactly like i do, there are some real legit fighters out there that need to be accounted for
by deuce 4 on May 6, 2009 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions
If they are legit they should be banging down the door trying to get into the UFC. LW, WW, MW, LHW are all completely stacked in the UFC to a point where they eclipse the rosters of any other org plus – BJ – GSP – AS – all 3 are worlds best in their class, at LHW who knows but it sure as hell isnt Nog, Babalu, Soku or Southworth. HW isnt as strong but still has more top 10 ranked fighters than any other org. Dana runs a tight ship and has too many fighters on his books at the moment, they are employed by zuffa and the vast majority of contracts in any decent job will not allow you to work elsewhere as its not in the best interest of your employer. 1 org that specialises in mma is best for the sport that way we get to see who the best is.
by PanicZoo on May 6, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions
anderson has 3 fights left. Griffin at 205 the hendo/bisping winner then I hope GSP if not then damian maia
by hatteras on May 6, 2009 8:42 PM EDT reply actions
Alright boys this is simple lol, Jones takes it in a boxing match, Silva takes it in an mma match. But I mean Dana should let Silva do this, I mean Silva has done a shitload for the UFC, Dana let him have this, under boxing rules at a boxing event. I think Jones would make short work of him, but shit, I would love to see it!, What weight would this be at!?
by ItsJustMe on May 6, 2009 10:57 PM EDT reply actions
I’m really surprised that Dana would turn down this offer.
Under boxing rules, Roy Jones would win. But under MMA rules, there’s no way I could see Anderson Silva losing. Even if they made a “gentlemens” agreement to keep the fight standing.
Silva has so many tools to overwhelm Roy on the feet. Heck, he could clinch with him and knee him to he collapses.
by Rob on May 7, 2009 12:25 AM EDT reply actions
Dana is just paranoid and so afraid of JOnes fighting silva.let silva fight in boxing…its makes more sense because he’ll earn more money(silva)
