it was, but it was a private interview so whatever…
I agreed with legend Royce on most things he was asked about, he seems like a good old man!

Is that Osama Bin Laden interviewing Royce?
Why does everyone call him Hoist?
by DrPepper on May 6, 2009 1:04 AM EDT up reply actions
It’s “Hoyce” actually. I guess over there in the land of jiu-jitsu, the Rs become Hs. I just don’t know why they still say “Sobral” instead of “Sob-hal”.

I think when the name STARTS with R followed by a vowel, its pronounced like an H, but I could be wrong!

Sure the wuality of the interview sucks, but I think what was talked baout was interesting.
I would love to see Sakuraba make Matt hUghes look silly!
and I can NEVER have enough fighters telling me that Fedor is the best! Especially the godfatrher of the sport!
by john on May 6, 2009 7:23 AM EDT up reply actions
Interesting to hear Royce say that he made the most in 1 fight then any other fighter in the history of mma. I am assuming he was talking about the Hughes fight, or one of the Sakuraba fighst in Japan!
anyone remember how much he made to fight Hughes?
by john on May 6, 2009 7:25 AM EDT up reply actions
I remember reading at the time that he was on 500k to show disclosed with an under the table bonus of 1 mil (which matt got also).
Not bad work if you can get it.
Saying that tho you can bet that those numbers have been passed by now.
by Nick J on May 6, 2009 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions
thanks Nick….who knows how much he was being paid in Japan to fight Sakuraba….Could be higher then his pay for the Hughes fight

any name that starts with an R is pronounced H..
Honaldo, Hogerio, Hoberto…

It’s a portuguese thing. If the name starts with an R and folloewed by a vowel it’s pronounced as a H.That’s why Shogun’s name is pronounced Hua and not Rua.

I like Royce he made MMA or atleast brought it to the West without the Gracies MMA wouldn’t be, so for that i respect him- BUT he needs to stop thinking that Gracie JJ is the best, its not ppl didn’t konw how to defend it (like bringing a guy to a knife fight) either way Fedor is King of MMA and it would be amazing if Fedor Vs A.Silva where to ever happen at a catch weight of like 210 both can make the cut easy without losing strength and even gaining Speed-

How many people would give Forrest a chance at beating Fedor? But yet Forrest vs Anderson is considered a good fight…just goes to show you how good Fedor really is…
by Robert(1) on May 6, 2009 9:12 AM EDT up reply actions
Anderson versus Forrest is going to be a good fight simply because Forrest will put up a fight and he is a tough guy who won’t go down easy. That doesn’t mean that Anderson won’t beat him 99 times out of 100. As far as Fedor versus Anderson, I think Anderson has the perfect combination of power and quickness on the feet to give Fedor trouble. Everybody thinks that if/when the fight hits the ground that Anderson would be dead but I don’t think so. He would come into the fight at around 215, be very strong and we all know that he has an active and dangerous guard. I’m not saying that Fedor couldn’t finish him, but let’s just say that Anderson has just as good a chance finishing Fedor on the feet.
by Adam T. on May 6, 2009 9:53 AM EDT up reply actions
WTF kind of question is that Robert? No, I don’t think that Anderson hits harder than Arlovski. However, Anderson has far superior footwork/movement. He also has as diversified and versatile a striking game as there is in MMA. He is very elusive ala Machida his good friend and training partner.
Also, I would guarantee you that he has a better chin than Andre.
by Adam T. on May 6, 2009 12:07 PM EDT up reply actions
Adam just starting up a converstaion bro….AA hit Fedor with bombs and Fedor didn’t blick…AA has some of the best foot work and Fedor still knock him out silly. I think Anderson is too skinny for Fedor..it’s not always about what somebody weighs but how it’s distributed…Anderson second best fighter in the world would get mauled by Fedor, just MO…

That would be nuts if a main event fighter pulled out to f*ck over ufc 100, career suicide though…

im sure they have a long list of decent substitutes that will be fight ready at the time. Kind of like when GSP filled in for Hughes. That was huge.

Okay, I love the Gracies and have tons of repect for Royce, but his notion of open weight fighting is not at all the same as when he started fighting.
We all know a smaller skilled fighter with great jits can take a big strong guy with no defense, but that’s a dying comparison with todays MMA.
If you simply want to know who is the baddest man on the planet, I get it, but to know that, you have to go back to the old school “no rules” vesion of the UFC as well. Not to mention, you would have to allow things that were not even legal back then.
Anyway, my point is, if Royce in his best days, had to fight guys like Silva, Lesnar and Fedor (to name a few), he would not be running through them the way he did back then.
Again all respect due to him, and he is still one of my favorites of all time.
by Jrandolph on May 5, 2009 9:31 PM EDT reply actions
There really isn’t anything you would have to allow that wasn’t allowed in the 1st UFC. Back then the only 2 rules were no biting and no eye gouging. Those are roughly the same rules used in “wrestling” back in the original olypmic games.
by naturalshadow on May 6, 2009 1:34 AM EDT up reply actions
If I remember correctly, they even allowed groin shots at UFC 1. It seems like I remember Dan Severn pounding a guy in the nads.
by Jrandolph on May 6, 2009 10:16 AM EDT up reply actions
They did allow them. Hackney vs. Joe Son is the best example. haha
by naturalshadow on May 6, 2009 5:07 PM EDT up reply actions
im sorry but that comment saying royce wouldnt run thro them is retarded,…. watch any of the first 4 which had some of the best wrestlers and martial artists around at the time, and none of them have any ground defense and royce choked them all out, but as ufc went on, fighters had to adapt there game to be able to compete against Gracie JJ and you notice as you get towards UFC 5-6 that alot of fighters have learnt the Gracie Full guard etc and Mixed martial arts was born in a way
so basically get lesnor in there with just wrestling background, or silva with just his Muay Thai No ground game nothing ( as remember the first ufc where not MMA as such but one style of martial art facing off against another)
and im pretty sure Royce wud beat them easily
OK if he was to fight any of those guys now ( after they have trained for yrs in MMA it would prob be loss)
by CoNr on May 6, 2009 8:05 AM EDT up reply actions
How is it retarted? you are making my point. Royce (in his best days) VS Lesnar (right out of the NCAA) and Royce would run through him. In todays MMA, these guys are so more rounded than they were back at UFC 1.
The main point is that a smaller guy had a much better chance against bigger guys in the early days, so the open weight idea would not be nearly as succesful for smaller fighters. That’s all I’m saying.
I’d still love to see an open weight tourney with some AllStars but it will never be sanctioned in the US
by Jrandolph on May 6, 2009 10:14 AM EDT up reply actions
sorry randolph bad day at work when i typed that comment, and just re-read, sorry for coming off a bit harsh
i to would love an open weight tourny or even for the ufc to bring back the tournament structure for a few one off events, tho i reckon the sanctioning bodies would prob all be against it due to fighter safety

It wasnt any worse of an interview then that one fucken dude who interviewed Carano a little while ago was posted here on mania.
Anyways while i definitely dont agree with Royce on Matt hughes losing to Sakuraba hes spot on with Fedor and as he says ‘only one way to find out’.
220 Anderson vs 230 Fedor fight at their natural weights.

Come on guy’s it was not that bad of a interview he’s really the godfathers of MMA and what he has to say has ten times the value of what any of us say. I liked how he gave his opinion and then thought about it and then followed by saying you have to fight it out because he knows in MMA or any other competition you have to fight it out to prove it.
by Beaver on May 5, 2009 10:53 PM EDT reply actions

Drilling out my eyeballs with a rusty drill bit then pouring hot sauce in the sockets is less painful than listening to Royce Gracie do an interview. Did he even answer any of the guys questions? Every question he answered with something that didnt even answer what the interviewer was asking.
Cnt believe I just wasted 7 minutes 9 seconds of my time. I would of rather been watching paint dry.
by fightfan on May 5, 2009 11:04 PM EDT reply actions
Oh and I am sick and tired of him thinking he is still the best. Sure I will admit he is a poineer and a great ambassador of the sport…..BUT, when people finally realized what the fuck BJJ is and how to defend against it…..The Gracies no longers wanted to compete. They just sat on the sidelines saying we are the best, we already proved our pint, blah, blah, blah.
It took a boatload of money to get him to face Hughes. If he would of faced Mark Kerr ot Colemann or ANY of the top guys in the early UFC’s(ufc 8-15)…Royce would of probably been the only death in mma
by fightfan on May 5, 2009 11:07 PM EDT reply actions
I take it you haven’t seen the early UFC’s fightfan? He’s like the Babe Ruth of MMA in the states. When a large majority of fighters were more scrappers the weight limit was open and you fought multiple time in one night he was king. Imagine now if you had a ten man tournament in one night?!

Out of respect I guess I should say that Sam Vasquez is the only death in MMA. (RIP).
I like the idea of an open weight tournament to decide the best fighter on the planet. Does it favour the bigger fighters? Hells yes, but it’s much less subjective then the pound for pound list and all the bitching and moaning people do over fighter placement, in my opinion the open weight is the most valid way of determining the best fighter. I’m not a overly crazy Fedor fan, but I realise that he continually fights competition that by other fighters standards should be 2-4 weight classes above him, and in some circumstances much higher. Yet, he continues to win, why? because he’s the best. I would love to see Fedor vs many of the 205ers in a open weight competition, I think none of the heavyweights now have the tools to beat him, but I say many of the 205ers giving him a much better challenge.

first of all I love Royce Gracie the guy is amazing he was the real life david that would beat the goliaths that makes mma so great
i was never so pumped up to watch a ufc than i was when getting ready to watch ufc 60 I was never more dissappointed either
i remeber watching royce gracie in the octogon on the old ppv channel that I didnt have where you could hear but couldnt see because of the wavy lines due to the channel being blocked but every ten seconds or so the picture would stop waving and you could see what was going on but then I would change it because It was way to brutal and dramatic for a 12 year old kid to watch but curiosity would keep causing me to flip it back for more he defied all odds and will always be the biggest legend in mma
I remember the older kids talking about him all the time he was like a mythological warior kind of like how william wallace was portrayed in brave hart.
that would have been awsome if he attended ufc 100 and was introduced to the crowd maybe he will change his mind
royce gracie is to mma like gretzky is to hockey how can you not admire the guy
by dia mette on May 6, 2009 2:15 AM EDT reply actions
Ive always felt the same way about p4p talk………….the best p4p fighter is the guy who can beat eveyone else bottom line
miguell torres top five p4p bullshit
bj top p4p bull shit
GSP top P4p bull shit
the true top 5 p4p fighters are all heavywieghts with A silva as an exception
by dia mette on May 6, 2009 2:23 AM EDT reply actions
The best p4p fighters are the guys that can beat all others in their weight class, hence the “pound for pound” connotation. Don’t be a jobber!
I love new fans to the sport, but if you’re going to talk like you know something….know it, don’t act like you know it.
by LongtimeMMAfan on May 6, 2009 8:15 AM EDT up reply actions
youre defintely right about the meaning of pound 4 pound
but the way i look at it is, who is the best fighter vs all other fighters maybe ill rationalize it by calling it something else, like the best globaly recognized fighter.
I feel the way to rank the best fighters is to say who would win when you put two of them in the ring /cage
heres a hypothetical for you lets say shinya aioki was on a 20 fight win streak dominating fighters in his respective wieght he would be considered a top p4p fighter and then you see fedor who could have ended his life at will, toying with him like an unaggressive pitbull toying with a chuwowa
or lets tske gsp a p4p top 3 in the world put him in the cage with a non champion but just a contender like gonzaga and he gets destroyed
i shouldnt have used the term p4p because I took it out of context but when you ask who is the best fighter in the world they are all heavywieghts with the exception of A Silva who could probably beat a handful of hw
by dia mette on May 6, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
I love how when they ask about “who is best pound for pound” he starts talking about himself and his fights from 15 years ago. This guy is so full of himself.
by ramon on May 6, 2009 3:17 AM EDT reply actions
You disagree with him? I think he is right on with his statements (that P4P is subjective, and open weight is the only true way to know who the best fighter is). So what if the guy used himself as an example…he’s a living legend. Fuck, I’d rather listen to Royce talk about himself than BJ Penn or Brock Lesnar talk themselves up. At least he has proof to back his stories up.
by introvert on May 6, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions
LOL what are you guys talking about? Matt hughes beat the shit out of Joyce gracie…if there was no rules and no time limit he would get pounded out all the time…even in his prime…And saomeone said what rules dont they have no that before were allowed..how about holding that big guy buy the hair..
by What? on May 6, 2009 10:12 AM EDT reply actions
Ahhh, but you are failing to recognize that “no rules” also means…“gi’s” are allowed. Without a gi, Hughes wins….with a gi, Royce taps Matt Hughes out all day long.
by introvert on May 6, 2009 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions
I don’t mean to burst anyones bubble but UFC was founded by Rorion Gracie. All of the fighters were selected by the gracies. Of course they selected fighters who they new had no training against BJJ and therefore Royce would be all but assured a victory.
by JJKID on May 6, 2009 11:35 AM EDT reply actions
Seriously – Close your eyes when you listen to Royce and he sounds a lot like Christopher Walken.
by JoJo on May 6, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions
Royce, enough already.
Let’s see, isn’t he serving out one year suspension for positive steroid test after last fight with sakuraba? Has he ever openly taken responsibility for a loss? Yes, bjj is an unique martial art, but look how others have caught on or even outpaced bjj.
Royce neeeds to recognize that he is a B lister in MMa nowadays. He was once the best, but has failed to adapt or speak with any humility as circumstances have changed. To his credit, he has not yet embarassed himself like Ken Shamrock.
