MMA Quick Quote: Tom Atencio walks the walk, Dana White talks the talk

"I want to thank Prize Fight as well as Fight Force for putting on this card. I’ve been seen in front of the cameras before as far as the business side, but it’s time to fight. I’m doing something Dana White won’t do and that’s fight. He talks like a fighter, so why doesn’t he fight? I’m stepping up to the plate and win, lose or draw I attempted it. I don’t ever think he would fight."

-- Affliction Vice President Tom Atencio takes a rare stab at his UFC counterpart, Dana White, during the press conference to promote his upcoming welterweight fight against Randy Hedderick at "Ultimate Chaos," which is scheduled for the Mississippi Gulf Coast Coliseum in Biloxi, Miss., on June 27. This will not be the first time that the 42-year-old steps into the ring -- Atencio made his mixed martial arts debut back in 2005 and has competed sporadically ever since. He currently runs Affliction MMA, staging two major pay-per-view (PPV) events within the last year. During that time White -- who was at one time an aspiring boxer -- has been vocal about the "t-shirt" guys wasting gobs of money and running a poor operation. Atencio, for the most part, has bit his lip ... until now.

Dana White was a boxer so he did fight before. Maybe not MMA but I’d put my money on Dana in that scrap. Hell, I’d take Lorenzo Fertitta over Atencio. And remember Tom, Tito did everything he could to not go through with his fight with Dana. Obviously he knew something you don’t.

by getrawbc on May 5, 2009 6:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah i think Lorenzo can handle himself. Wasn’t it him who said he sneaks in for a session with Mark DG when he can.

Will be interested to see how Tom gets on does anyone know what this Randy Hedderick is like (too lazy for sherdog) bet he is a can.

i’d bet dana white and the fertitta’s brothers have NEVER been in a fight. i bet that punk dana never got into a fight as a kid, he probly always ran to the fertitta’s or some big bro or big cousin or someone. i bet none of the 3 has ever been hit in the mouth with a closed fist

Yea unless you consider boxing matches fights.

And if you are referrig to street fights, well, I would actually see that as a good thing.

listen, when did Dana ever claim to ba a fighter? And he was gonna box Tito and was training for it. Dana claims to be a business man and isn’t bankrupting his company. Maybe Tom should be concentrating on giving us good shows (like the last affliction) instead of his pipe dream as an old fighter.
I do though give him props for fighting!

by kevin on May 5, 2009 10:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hey getrawbc, you’ve got it wrong if you think Tito backed out cause of Dana’s boxing skills, that wasn’t the case… Dana didn’t claim to be a fighter but yet he is the one takin’ over the fighting show, he’s showcasing himself more than the fighters..

Wrong deuce 4

The Fertitta brothers actually regularly spar with each other. They even had a clause that any deadlock disagreements regarding the business had to be settled in the ring (not sure if that is still true since Frank isn’t as involved with Zuffa and more the casino now).

Atencio is just trying to get attention for Affliction! Im willing to bet that Tom’s opponent will be the weakest guy in that division!

Not any weaker than Dana’s next fight…that’d be impossible now wouldn’t it.

Besides Tom is what 1-0 (correct me if I’m wrong) in MMA? He probably is the least experienced guy on the card…or do you think he should get a top 10 opponent for his next fight?

Tito knew one thing. That the UFC was going to cash in on him boxing Dana and give him nothing, Tito wanted to donate any money made off it to charity. But I get your point although Tito doesnt have the best hands he is still a professional fighter and Dana was willing to box him.

by lokie on May 5, 2009 8:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Every time this d-bag opens his mouth, he is calling out Dana White in one way or another. I think its hilarious you never hear Dana even mention him… he isn’t worth Dana’s time!

by ---Caesar--- on May 5, 2009 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agree…Dana has gone on record saying he knew long ago that he didn’t have what it takes to be a fighter…I don’t understand Tom’s point? So Affliction is some how a better MMA product becuase Tom really fights and Dana doesn;t? All I know is UFC 100 and 101 are going to be sick and thats due to the fact that Dana spends his time promoting and marketing not fighting! Keep up the Good work Dana.

Getrawbc dont even bring up that boxing bs with Tito, Tito would have ruined Danas life in a boxing match. He didn’t want to fight for the same reason you and I wouldn’t want to fight our boss becuase hes your BOSS

I don’t think it’s appropriate for a president of an MMA promotion to fight themselves, not only does it send out a message that anybody can do this sport, but it is also a conflict of interest. I don’t see how you can compete and run a business at the same time, you can’t be an employer and an employee. It would be even worse if he fought on an Affliction show because he’d be paying himself to fight. To me this just seems to be a publicity stunt in order for Attencio to get his name out there, but it could backfire if he gets destroyed as it won’t do any good for the credibility of the Affliction brand. Likewise its not a smart fight for people to take as win/lose they are facing a 42 year old businessman, it’s almost as bad for their reputations as fighting Kyle Maynard.

by David W-S on May 5, 2009 7:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nah, I think he just wants to fight; if he wasn’t the pres of affliction it wouldn’t be getting any press; but since he is running an MMA org now, he’s bound to get questions about it. It’s not like affliction is running up posters and commercials about the Tom Attencio fight. Besides, I doubt he’s trying to make a carreer out of it; maybe the guy just got the itch for a real fight. I got no problem with him getting out for a fight or 2 every now and again while he’s still young enough to do it.

But, dumb to call out Dana like that; he’s never professed to be a fighter or to fight mma, most of the tough guy talk is business oriented and although a bit crude, Dana’s always presented himself as a down to earth, no BS kind of business man. I don’t see the point of his comparison.

by O damn he got caught on May 5, 2009 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

At 42 I think the only reason that a guy like Atencio is getting fights with so little experience is because he’s the VP of Affliction. It’s nice for him to get involved in a fight but I have a feeling that this is all going to end in tears.

And I agree, his comparisons with Dana are irrelevant, to me this implies that he is only fighting in order to enhance his public image and look like more of a man than Dana. I’d rather Tom got on with running Affliction and getting another PPV sorted than fighting as that would cause Dana a lot more grief than an undercard fight for a little known promotion.

by David W-S on May 5, 2009 9:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

See I think he gets the fights at his age cause he didn’t compete through his younger years; his body hasn’t seen the wear and tear of a seasoned veteran. As long as he’s in shape, and makes weight, its all good.

by O damn he got caught on May 5, 2009 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude, this wont be Antencio’s first fight! I have nothing but respect for anyone that steps in a cage and tests themselves against another man. Especially a 42 year old man, who has money and will be fighting for chump change! It takes millions to get Randy’s 40 year old ass in a cage…I bet you Atencio is going to step up and fight for about a measly $3,000!

Sorry, but I gotta respect that!

by john on May 5, 2009 9:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Randy’s worth what he gets paid, as a fighter and a hall of famer he’s earned it. Attencio should be fighting for a measly 3k, he’s not earned anything on the competition side of MMA. But I do agree, that a man with his kind of money doesn’t need to fight, and must be doing it, just for love of the sport. So, props to him for that.

by O damn he got caught on May 5, 2009 9:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John, I agre with you in that he deserves respesct for stepping in the cage, but it’s smacks of jr high antics when you start calling out other execs from another organization because they won’t do the same.
Can you see Bud Selig in pinstripes, on the mound calling out David Stern cause he won’t mix it up with the pros in the NBA? The whole thing is kinda stupid really.
Dana can sling it pretty good as well, but at the end of the day, this is irrelevant to wether Attencio can actually put a dent in the UFC’s hold on th MMA market.

Dana White woke up on 3rd base and thought he had hit a triple.

Not content with turning the UFC into the WWE, White’s Latest idiotic and low life move, deliberately recruiting sub par American fighters (like refusing anybody who had fought in Strikeforce) to compete against the UK fighters in TUF 9 so he could boost ratings in the Uk shows just how much of a lowlife he is.

Bad enough that he turned TUF into a piss parade suitable only for water sports fetishists and idiotic, mouth breathing mall rats without a clue, now he wants to make American fighters look bad. Deliberately!

After stiffing the American public with tons of bad fight cards White’s bacon will be saved by some decent cards this summer. But make no mistake, White is a low life who doesn’t care a whit about the fighters or the fans who pay the outrageously inflated ticket prices to see them.

The caliber of his fans is typified by the truly brain dead comment above by some genius who truly believes that Tito ducked a fight with White. Unreal :)

by SnowCrash7 on May 5, 2009 7:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would have picked Dana to win that fight; and Couture actually picked Dana to win that fight and expose a lot of the weaknesses in Tito’s stand up. As far as Tito ducking a fight, could have been money, could have been not wanting to get beat up on television by White; who knows. Imo Tito is a business man first a fighter 2nd now a days; and for the last few years. He’ll cover his a$$ when he feels he has to; it’s a fact that he ducked the fight, just don’t know the reasons as to why. And the whole money issue is a dumb argument, is it gonna kill Tito Ortiz, who makes 7 figures a year, to do one boxing match against a guy he says he can’t stand??

Think you’re being a little too critical of Dana; the season still has plenty more to go; the American team has definatley started off horribly, but there’s time for some redemption as the season plays out. Dana can’t put Strike Force fighters in there, it wouldn’t be fair to the UK team; they are all fighters from smaller shows, and its an even playing field that way. It’s up to the fighter to make the most of the opportunity their givin, not White; you can’t blame him for how other people are performing/behaving.

by WB on May 5, 2009 8:31 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah he does. Dana White is actually Pound 4 Pound the greatest fighter to ever live. He just knows he is so much better than everyone else he doesn’t fight. Like the guy above said Tito was so scared of him he not only didn’t fight him but left UFC out of fear for his life.

That is also the reason Fedor won’t come to UFC. He is afraid Dana White will get pissed at him and kick his ass.

This is true; if you ever saw that movie gladiator (the boxing one), that old guy at the end whooped on Cuba Gooding Jr. and the white boy. It makes perfect sense that if the fighters get way out of line, they will end up suffering. It’s probably a$$ woopin time for you too Silva if Dana feels embarrassed at another event.

Is it interesting … sort of but i think its just Tom trying to do something for himself rather than promote his company. It just makes no sense for him to go in there and do it for his brand. Yall make it sound like he is Jackie Moon from that basketball movie

I think you guys need to lay off Tom Atencio. He is perhaps the only promoter in MMA who is willing to put the gloves on and step inside the cage. Can’t say that for anybody else. Also, Tom knows Dana better than anyone of us fans and Dana talks a lot of shit and has about Tom and his operation for a long time.

To me, it’s about time that Tom Atencio said something back about Dana and his big mouth. Some of you want to talk about dana or lorenzo would beat atencio but 1. you don’t know that 2. dana and lorenzo are way bigger than tom

by Spyder on May 5, 2009 9:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Like Tom or not, you gotta agree with his statement….it’s 100% true.

About that Ortiz vs Dana thing…why does everyone ignore the fact that the boxing match was called off before the taping of that stupid Spike show even began? Hell, it was already known to MMA fans about a month before the taping of the show that Dana and Tito couldn’t come to terms on where the money would go, but they still taped the show then made Dana out to be the hero and Tito the goat….didn’t stop all you Dana worshippers from getting on all fours and towing the Dana train though. Tito wanted to do a $10 PPV and donate the money to charity, Dana wanted no part of it, Tito balked at doing the match, Dana still taped the show….it was all over the MMA news websites and shit….wake up Dana lovers, he duped you again. That Spike show was one of the biggest farces I’ve ever seen…I especially liked the part when Dana was sitting all by himself in the boxing ring acting like he was upset that Tito was a no show….A MONTH AFTER TITO TOLD HIM TO FUCK OFF…..LMAO…Dana could offer you ’huggers ocean front property in Arizona and you would be all over it.

If you ask me, that dude needs to start planning an event instead of training and messing around with his mid life crisis fighting dreams. He has some of the worlds best fighters under contract standing around holding their dicks waiting for a fight.

Affliction is supposed to put on a summer event. It’s may and they don’t have a date, any fights announced, nothing!! As far as I am concerned Affliction is DEAD!! Release the fighters and start designing some new shirts b/c these old ones are just tacky and played out now.

Atencio is starting to come across like a loser these days. No one cares about his half-hearted, attention-getting attempts at fighting. He shifts between saying he has no beef with Dana to insinuating that he’s more man than Dana because he’s stepping up to fight. LOL.

Atencio put on some great fights through the Affliction brand; but he had a failed business model from the beginning and he’s going to go under soon. Everyone knows that. He ought to hold his head up and be content with the two good shows he put on. There’s no need to pull ridiculous stunts to keep his name out there. When Affliction folds, his name will be meaningless to the average fan. Fighting some C-level fighter in a C-level show won’t change that.
