Renzo Gracie: Don't sleep on Matt Serra

Props: TriStateFighter

Quoteworthy:

People take Matt Serra lightly ... In our sport things don't happen by chance. Luck has nothing to do with it ... He's one of the best fighters I have ever seen in my life. He has huge heart, never quits, he can win a fight at any moment. His jiu-jitsu is unbelievable and his punching power is very strong. He's a guy that can always surprise someone. It will be a very action-packed fight. I can't wait to watch.

Renzo Gracie, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu black belt and head jits trainer for several of today's top fighters, talks about preparing Matt Serra for UFC 98 on May 23 against his opposing coach from the sixth season of The Ultimate Fighter, Matt Hughes. The 42-year-old Gracie also reveals a possible return to competition after the opening of two more jiu-jitsu academies in the latter part of 2009 to "any place that is willing to take an old man." Maybe he can join fellow fortysomething Tom Atencio on the undercard of "Ultimate Chaos" on June 27.

Maybe he has a chance against an aging Hughes but he is surely not even in the top 20.

I disagree. Why is everyone so hard on serra? I’m a big fan, and look at his wins/losses. He fights top competition, win or lose, there is no shame in that! i don’t get how some people are Gray Maynard or Ryan Bader fans, but dislike a guy like Serra!

by kevin on May 4, 2009 11:00 AM EDT up reply actions

good post Kev. u r one of the few people on tis site that give Serra the respect that he deserves. He almost did to Karo what he did to GSP. Great point about how people can like TUF guys but hate on Serra.

I think Serra is a top 15 WW, and a great person and an even better coach!

I think Hughes’s ego combined with his lack of respect for Serra’s skills, will cause Hughes to think he can stand n trade with Serra long enough for Serra to take his fucking head off.

by john on May 4, 2009 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea I’m with you on that one; I can’t stand Hughes and always liked Matt Serra; especially after his appearance on TUF the comeback; likeable down to earth guy, and an excellent fighter. LW is his division though; win or lose it’s time to move down. Serra vs Sherk would be interesting imo.

Renzo Gracie, also awesome; favorite fight with him was against Carlos Newton. Classy guy too; for someone with his noteriety.

by O damn he got caught on May 4, 2009 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

The only name Serra has ever finished was GSP. All the other fighters were cans he submitted or decisions. The men he’s submitted were 0-0 when he fought them and are currently only 0-1. He lost to Shonie, Penn, Din, and Karo which I give him credit for fighing them but who cares, he lost. I think Serra is very over rated as a fighter and will inevitably lose to Hughes. Hughes is a legend who has proven himself and you give him shit John because he lost to the two best fighters in the WW division? Serra is much much much less deserving of any respect than Hughes is and Huges will show that to all the shit talkers. Matt via decision lol, I can’t lose now!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 1:17 PM EDT up reply actions

i agree with kev and john…. serra is a nice guy… he is respectful to his opponents (obviously not hughes) and is just a class act

i personally see him destroying hughes….. hughes’ only option is to lie on serra for 3 rounds

while serra can knock him out or submit him

i also agree with o damn i would like too see serra at LW

by ufcaddict on May 4, 2009 1:22 PM EDT up reply actions

In fairness, Serra only takes issue with Hughes as a person, not as a fighter. I like Serra just because all them funny-talkin’ yankee-types make me laugh.

by PW on May 4, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Again Serra only submits cans, what makes anyone think he’s going to be able to submit Hughes? His best shot would be to go for a KO but honestly he doesn’t have that drive that GSP and Thiago have. I’m predicting this fight is going to end a lot like the Chris Lyttle fight. I’m looking forward to Hughes sending Serra packing and then maybe we can see Hughes against Kos. John I know your a Jits guy and also from the East cost so I understand your bias. My roots are in wrestling so I’m hugely biased towards Hughes. Also I still ask the question, who declares themselves a class act? A pompus jackass, thats who!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I too am taking Serra in this one, although I see a submission victory rather than pounding Hughes out.

Serra will not be able to avoid every takedown attempt but I see Hughes’ lack of respect for Serra being key. He’s going to get lazy in Serra’s guard and from there a sub will come.

by DJ on May 4, 2009 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Again who the fuck has Serra submitted that you all think this. Serra has some sick jits no doubt but come on when do we get to see them? Serra thinks he’s a striker now so get over it.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes has submitted 18 opponents, Serra 4. Serra has the better BJJ but look at Gorge Jurgel, great jitz, transfers horribly to the UFC. And Hughes has only ever been submitted by GSP and BJ Penn.

I think you are out of your mind to say Hughes only option is to lie on Serra for 3 round while Serra can knock him out or submit him.

by WB on May 4, 2009 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions

cogito: when has serra declared himself a class act???

just because he’s never submitted any names in the past doesnt mean he is never going to be able too

i think serra will knock him out but a submission is also possible…

WB: Gurgel has got brilliant BJJ but he never got a sub because he never really tried… i remember watching his first couple of fights in the ufc and he would only try an average of 3-4 subs a fight and his last few fights in the ufc he never really tried any so saying that it doesnt always transition well is not true… i think gurgel could of submitted people if he tried to more often but he was always too concerned with having a boring fight

by ufcaddict on May 4, 2009 2:16 PM EDT up reply actions

To me Jorge Gurgel represents everything wrong with MMA because rather than play to his strengths and try to win fights with his excellent BJJ he just has brawls with his opponents because he thinks the UFC fans find the ground game boring. Stand up fights are fun to watch but watching an excellent grappler devolve into a mediocre brawler because he’s scared of drunks booing him if he goes to the ground is a sad state of affairs.

WAR cannoli-dwarf!

by Jeremyjackson on May 4, 2009 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions

He was always comparing himself to GSP and how they could be be classy together and grab a beer (this was mainly on tuf). So if we are ok to state how others perceive us then consider myself a laid back lad who could throw leather with the best of them. BTW if a man has had 14 fights and only won by submission four times to men who had a combined record of maybe two to four wins thats not impressive. I’m not saying that Serra can’t submit Hughes but I am saying its unlikely. Serra stands more chance knocking Hughes out but again I think this scenario sounds unlikely. I know MMA math doesn’t work but do you know the names of the people who beat Hughes or Serra? How about how many fights they’ve been in and the average skill of their opponents? Again I’m not saying Serra can’t win or he doesn’t have good jits, I’m just saying he’s an overrated loud mouth. Not that Hughes isn’t a common cocky high school jock. But Hughes has done more far the sport and his fans than Serra ever will so maybe give him more respect? Or you could keep listening to his blogs about other fighters cause what he thinks about other fighters should really matter to you. Also I didn’t compare Gurgel and Serra cause IMO Serra has decent enough stand up that he can rely on that for most of his fights.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions

yeh i was talkin to WB about gurgel

give hughes more respect? i havent said anything bad about him i just really believe serra will dominate

i dont think he is overrated a lot of people think he is going to lose and he is an under dog comin into this fight

i’m sorry to disturb your love for hughes but in tuf when he was a contestant and then later a coach i think he come across funny and classy compared to the ego-maniac hughes who likes to bad mouth everyone and make excuses for his losses…. yeh he was a dominent champion and he did do a lot for the sport but that doesnt mean he can act like he does

by ufcaddict on May 4, 2009 5:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Hughes will get caught early. Serra is a fast starter, he’s gonna catch him in the first 2-3 minutes of the fight.

Hughes should have never become champ he won on accident when he fought Carlos Newton. Newton choked him out via triangle and Hughes was out that was the only reason he dropped Newton in return knocking Newton out. When the ref stopped the fight Hughes was so out of it he did not even know that he won the fight. The rest is history.

by bjjitaly on May 4, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Syd: If anyone on earth thinks they are better then they are, its Matt Hughes. I really would not be surprised if he completely overlooks Serra stand up, and overestimates his own stand up capabilities, and end up getting KTFO!

by john on May 4, 2009 7:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Newton held the cage when he had that triangle choke, preventing Hughes from slaming him earlier and breaking the choke. Normally I wouldn’t say holding the fence for a few extra seconds would do much but when you have a choke in it definetly does. Also Newton and Hughes had a rematch in which Hughes won… I think that proves he should have become champ.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 5, 2009 7:36 AM EDT up reply actions

You people… I don’t understand what in the hell you see in Matt Serra to think he will beat Matt Hughes. It is a devastating mismatch here. Hughes will take him down, and pound his face in. The only thing that Serra has for himself in this fight is the fact that hes a very durable guy, having only been finished twice.

Hughes will dominate this fight. Serra is a joke. Personalities aside, Hughes wins this fight 19 times out of 20. Serra aint SHIT!!

by Synyster on May 5, 2009 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I like Serra. He’s a wildcard for me. I think he could win or lose almost any fight. He’s has great Jitz and heavy hands which means on any given Sunday, he can pull an upset. That makes him interesting. And you’re right, the guy hasn’t really been handed cans over the years.

Did you see Gray’s last fight vs Jim Miller? Millers face was a mess – hardly lay and pray. I would say Gray is working very hard to become more than just a wrestler. And even his fight vs Edgar was very exciting in my opinion.

Im a hughes fan, but I agree with kev. serra goes out there to fight, and can put away some tough guys.

by What? on May 4, 2009 12:31 PM EDT up reply actions

Well kev,Matt Sera been on my black list since April 7 2007.But i can’t say bad things about him now…like i say the other day,Sera is no joke!Your right he did face up top opponents,he’s always in good fights and bring it every time!I can even say that,i find him be a more legit TUF winner, than anyone of the others, who fought rookies that didn’t had UFC experience. He won against Veterans of the game and, they all had a lots of experiences!I wish i’m to win,to boost is career back, and see him go at 155.I think he can make serious wave at that weight and instead to have a Maynard as almost number one contender we,can get a Matt Sera.So we,can see a Sera/BJ Penn 2 or a Sera/Ken-flo or even a Sera/Sherk fight!Hughes is better start taking him seriously because,if he lose that fight, the only ranking that he’s gonna have to worried about is his ranking at the hall of fame!!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 4, 2009 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t hate Serra, and I use to be a huge Hughes fan, but after the show, both guys were annoying meto no end. Hughes with the over confidence, and Serra with the tough guy “dick” talk.

With that aside, (And I say this honestly wih no disrespect), I’m not sure how good either of these guys are anymore. Serra has only fought twice since winning the show right, and that was quite a while back. Sure he got a win over GSP which is huge, but then got slapped around the way Hughes did. Hughes has’nt had a good showing in a while either. I just want this one to be over so these guys can move on to something else.

Maybe life insurance or something.

by Jrandolph on May 4, 2009 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Personally I am hoping for a double knockout! I don’t like either one of them.

by CaptainAmerica on May 4, 2009 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions

Great point Kevin, I’ve never understood the Serra bashing either, he’s a likeable guy with a brash personality who has exciting fights and is a lw who won the ww belt, which should earn everybody’s respect. Right now a drop to lw would benefit Serra’s career as the current ww’s are too big for him but I think he has a great chance at beating Hughes, who hasn’t looked good since the second BJ fight. Serra has the better stand up and is more dangerous on the ground but Hughes’ wrestling means this could end up being Hughes-Lytle mark 2, as he won’t want any part of Serra’s jits or boxing.

I don’t think he has the kind of take down defense that Alves and GSP have to keep Hughes from taking him down. I’m assuming this will be a lay and pray fight because Hughes is going to have to be careful of Serra’s jits.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

You don’t really need the greatest take down defense anymore against hughes. His takedowns are so predictable. I hope Serra knocks him out, but if I had to bet I would also say Hughes by decision via lay n pray.

by randy murders on May 4, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, he’d fair much better at 155. I really don’t know why he doesn’t go back down. I guess it made sense for him to fight at 170 to get on the TUF show, and then had to defend the belt after winning it. Now I guess he just wants to fight Hughes so bad, that he’s staying there. Win or Lose he should drop back down!

by LJ on May 4, 2009 12:00 PM EDT up reply actions

He didn’t look like a Terra when GSP dismantled him. I’m not saying he gave up at all, he simply had no answers for a stronger faster and over all better fighter in GSP. I’m pulling for him vs. Hughes and think he’s got a ton of heart regardless.

by Sir Chokemout on May 4, 2009 11:20 AM EDT up reply actions

by bellio on May 4, 2009 10:51 AM EDT reply actions

I would be interested in seeing Serra compete in the 155 lb division. He would be a large LW, much like Sanchez and Sherk, giving him a bit of an advantage.

Still, he’s the guy who lost to Shonie Carter’s spinning backfist. Tough to live down.

by Drake_Labatt on May 4, 2009 11:01 AM EDT reply actions

Why is that had to live down? Shonee was a decent fighter back then. The guy has over a hundred fights. Shonee was no slouch. God, I can’t believe I am defending Serra….WTF?

by CaptainAmerica on May 4, 2009 11:31 AM EDT up reply actions

Agreed, that and Shonie’s landed the spinning backfist on a lot of guys, KO’d/TKO’d them? Maybe not, but he’s got that backfist down to perfection.

by O damn he got caught on May 4, 2009 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

I would say he is top 20, but just barely. I hope Hughes dominates him and then retires, but with him talking about taking on Alves or GSP it doesnt look like that will be the case.

I know this is a huge if, but if Hughes improved his stand up (albeit ALOT and that is a pretty big component to be lacking in) he could still be a force.

by WB on May 4, 2009 11:02 AM EDT reply actions

i still think he is a force, look at who he has lost to recently, gsp and alves, gsp has the belt and alves is NO1 contender, he’s lost to the 2 best guys in the devision, i think he still has a few fights left and i think he could easily beat most WW in the ufc, i dont see him being the champ again because i think gsp is just to quick and to good for him to beat, same with alves, i dont even think a prime hughes could beat gsp or alves today but i still think he could be one of the best WW’s in the ufc right now, i think this fight will tell us alot about how quickly he’s aging, he looked bad against gsp and alves but most people do. i could see him getting another title shot befor he retires but for that to happen he’ll need to win this fight and if he does he’ll probably fight someone else after for the NO1 contender spot. who knows, maybe if he wins this fight he will just retire, he has nothing left to proov.
i see hughes winning this by tko, his wrestling is much better than sera’s and he’ll probably be stronger, he has good enough JJ to avoid and sub attemts so i see him putting sera against the cage and just raining down GnP till the ref stops it

by hughes on May 4, 2009 11:15 AM EDT up reply actions

If Serra can knock off Hughes, I’d really like to see him fight a strong up n comer like Hazelet, or Johnson. If Serra still wants to be considered Top 10, he should be running through guys like these. I can’t see him doing that, but they’d be entertaining fights nonetheless.

by GodDamnMike on May 4, 2009 11:06 AM EDT reply actions

Johnson at 6’2’’ and serra at 5’6’’ would make for one hell of a mismatch! Dont throw Serra to the wolves like that.

by jhud on May 4, 2009 11:22 AM EDT up reply actions

I dont rate Serra at all. Never have. I wouldnt call him top 20, Id call him mediocre at best. That said, I hope they have a good fight, I really do, because im getting visions that 98 is going to be a snoozefest worse than 97.

by UK_Chris on May 4, 2009 11:29 AM EDT reply actions

As long as Hughes doesn’t eat a big right hand, he will more than likely be able to take Serra down and win a ud. I’d like to see Hughes get the win here because Serra has for sure been the one that has done the more talking about each other. Hughes in his prime would dominate Serra. The fight coming up will more than likely be more competitive.

by brac on May 4, 2009 11:55 AM EDT reply actions

I’ve noticed a lot of anti-Serra fans are still bitter over the GSP fight. It’s hard to rank Serra – I think the biggest knock on him is the frequency in which he fights: Only once a year since 2004. By that same token, his drop off may not be as sharp as some of the other vets. I’m leaning towards Hughes by UD, though I just can’t help but think that he’s taking this lightly.

by Jesse Holland on May 4, 2009 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

I hope he’s taking it lightly, and I hope serra puts him into a coma. Maybe he’ll see the light and realize even his god can’t save him…from being the biggest douche in mma!

Nice post, Sarah.

Let me add this : people hate on both Matt(s) because they speak their minds w/o a PC filter.

I appreciate their candor even if I disagree with some of the crazy stuff that they both say.

Too many people want to make friends and be disingenious instead of being straight.

That being said, I have Serra by decision.

by OJR on May 4, 2009 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

I think Jesse has an excellent point. If the first GSP/Serra fight never happened and if Serra beat, say, Frank Trigg in that dominant fashion, then went on to lose to GSP (like the second fight), people would actually rank Serra higher as a fighter. But beating GSP has actually lowered his rank, because people are so bitter about it. Hmm, hopefully these run-on sentences made sense.

by Victory Is Ours on May 4, 2009 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I am going to help support your point by saying that the GSP fight is the only impressive thing that Serra has ever done! He got lucky and landed a punch to the back of the head and now alot of people think he is legit. Look at the B-level fighters that he has lost to: Carter, Parisyan, and Thomas. He hasn’t beat anyone that is worth a shit except the fluke with GSP. And just to add to my bitterness, he isn’t the one who should have been fighting GSP, it should have been Lytle.
Also I get tired of hearing how good his jits is. Whatever, he has subbed three no names in his entire life. Hughes will dominate him from start to finish. I would like to see something similiar to the Hughes/Newton fight where they both go out at the same time.

by CaptainAmerica on May 4, 2009 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Victory is ours, I think you missed Jesse’s point but I don’t want to be one to put words in someones mouth. Also Sarah excellent point, I’m not trying to convince people that Hughes isn’t a douche but I’m trying to say Serra is also so why pretend like Serra is a saint and Hughes is some crazy god loving Christian. BTW I hope your not a fan of Diego Kevin, he’s a big religious nut too.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

True, unfortunately all of the GSP fans that said he didn’t have a hope in hell of winning were left looking so foolish that they have continuously bashed his victory ever since, calling it a fluke and his TKO a lucky punch. Of course GSP is the better fighter, which he proved at 83, but at 69, Serra was the better man with the stronger mentality and better gameplan. Serra deserves credit for this victory just as GSP deserves credit for the improvements he’s made to his game since this defeat.

The thing with serra that annoys me is how he apparently has such great bjj and “heavy hands” the hit that messed gsp up wasn’t much and it was the initial hit behind the ear that won him the fight. The only other time he knocked a guy down was karo in like the first 10 seconds of the fight, wow he knocked one guy down with a straight jaw shot in like 14 fights and has 1 tko, heavy hands ya right. Ko’s and tko’s numbers speak for them selves, gsp knocked fitch down at least a couple of times more than serra in just one fight and I can’t remember anyone saying gsp has heavy hands, or rashad for that matter who ko’d chuck. Please I’d LOVE to hear an intelligent argument as to why serra has “heavy hands” and top "MMA"bjj, because his record certainly doesn’t back that up. I say hughes controls serra and wins a UD in a fairly lacklucker fight, hughes won’t wand to trade much with serra, serra won’t be able to stop the take down and hughes sub defense will be too good for serra…my prediction.

by nathan on May 4, 2009 1:45 PM EDT reply actions

actually he knocked GSP down multiple times and looked like a middleweight fighting a heavyweight. sorry if it was painful for you to watch, but don’t try to sugar it up. serra won that fight and i dont think people get lucky against GSP. give the guy some credit, jeez.

by chris on May 4, 2009 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions

The “multiple knockdowns” were a result of the initial shot behind the ear.

Serra beat GSP fair and square, and I give him credit for it. GSP wasn’t ready and it cost him. But we all know that if they fought ten more times GSP would win every fight.

And Serra looked like a lightweight fighting a welterweight.

Flashback! From my March 2007 interview:

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): What about Matt Hughes? Is it awkward seeing him after the comments you made on The Ultimate Fighter?

Matt Serra: I rarely see him so it hasn’t been an issue. I would never disrespect the guy as a fighter because he’s a powerhouse. He’s done a lot in our division. But as a person he’s so arrogant. Being a great fighter doesn’t give you an excuse to be an asshole.

Jesse Holland (UFCmania): It seems Matt has made a name for himself by being a great fighter and by being a jerk.

Matt Serra: Yeah, I mean I used to hang out with guys like Tim Sylvia and Matt Hughes. We used to be cool but I don’t know, you win a few fights and get yourself some airtime and all of the sudden you’re walkin’ around like your shit don’t stink. My attitude is you meet the same guys on the way down that you met on the way up.

by chris on May 4, 2009 2:55 PM EDT reply actions

This should be a good fight, but probably won’t be.
Both fighters are in their twilight. Hughes has shown recently that he has no standup. He will be able to take Serra down at will, but Serra’s defense will be enough to keep Hughes in his guard. Serra will probably try to keep it standing to avoid any GNP, so it could be a snoozer.

Matt Hughes will enter the UFC Hall of Fame. Matt Serra got a lucky punch and, after he loses against Hughes, will realize he is not in the top 10 in the WW division and either drop to lightweight or go fight in the B leagues if he wants a win.

Just because the guy has a good personality, doesnt mean hes a good fighter.Hes great in submissions, but thats pretty much it. Every fighter has a punchers chance. Hughes can win this fight anywhere, infact,im gonna pick Hughes winning with a kimura.Hes way to strong for Serra, and all the badmouthing Serra did, only fueled Hughes fire. Hopefully, instead of a kimura, hell get his first knockout.(excluding the Newton slam).
WAR HUGHES.

Hughes is gonna get owned. He should have never been champ Newton chocked him out via triangle and he fell asleep that is why he dropped Carlos Newton for a fake slam that knocked out Newton. At the end of the fight Hughes was so out of it he did not know he won because he was just waking up. The rest of his fights he was spoon fed.
