Frank Mir may want to coach Brock Lesnar on how to fight better after UFC 100

Props: MMAWeekly.com

Quoteworthy:

"I think that a lot of people realize that he was only 1-1, he had a .500 record in the UFC when he got a title shot.... I know at the end I’m going to be able to get a hold of him. There’s going to be a day of reckoning. So he’ll have to answer to me personally. There’s going to be no reporters or nobody to protect him.... Three or four years from now, if I decide to switch over into full time coaching, I would like to coach Brock. I see a lot of things that he’s done in his last couple of fights that I think are mistakes that are not really his fault, they’re maybe his trainer’s faults. How can he be so talented, an NCAA champion, probably one of the best wrestlers to come out of college in the heavyweight division, and still make some of the real basic balancing and footwork mistakes that he’s making right now?"

Interim UFC heavyweight champion Frank Mir would consider taking the division's current titleholder, Brock Lesnar, under his wing sometime in the near future to correct several mistakes that he sees the former WWE star making early in his MMA career. Mir and Lesnar will collide in the main event at UFC 100 on July 11 at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, to determine an undisputed champion. Can the teacher once again school the massive Minnesotan or will the student have a surprise of his own for the confident Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt? Class will be in session soon enough ...

He’d be willing to coach a guy that beat him for 99.9% of their fight on his disasterous mistakes?

How generous of him.

by iEminence on May 4, 2009 6:58 AM EDT reply actions

Actually it is pretty generous. Its not like Brock could coach Mir how to fight. Brock only uses his wrestling and size. He doesn’t have great stand up, or ground and pound, or submission skills. Mir could actually teach Brock a more rounded ground game. That said, these are big words coming from Mir. I hope he takes the win on this one.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 7:09 AM EDT up reply actions

Theres no need for any training other than JJ. I think Mir is just trying to sound confident. I hope Brock learned from his mistake and just keeps the fight standing!

by JV on May 4, 2009 7:43 AM EDT up reply actions

Mir’s cockiness will be his downfall.

by RedDog on May 4, 2009 9:27 AM EDT up reply actions

Mir could help improve Brock’s jits considerably and once Lesnar works on his footwork and submissions he will be near enough unbeatable.

However, I’m sick of Mir bitching about Brock getting a title shot, the only reason Frank got an interim title shot and a stint on TUF was because he beat Lesnar, if he was that unworthy then why did Frank get all of these opportunities from a win. Before then he looked like shit, getting destroyed by guys like Vera and Marcio Cruz and putting on poor performances in general, so he should show Lesnar some gratitude as that fight made Mir relevant in the HW division for the first time since his motorbike accident. And why did he have to bash Lesnar’s coaches, that was very disrespectful.

I’m really hoping that Brock shuts the doubters up by smashing Frank at 100. If he keeps himself composed this time then he should be able to pull it out, I like Brock’s chances standing but on the ground Mir will school him.

by David W-S on May 4, 2009 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree 100%

by JV on May 4, 2009 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions

How can you guys respect what Mir is saying? To say that you want to coach your opponent is really disrespectful if you ask me. NOt to mention bashing your opponents coaches is one of the most classless things I have heard in the sport in a long time.

You dont hear Brock saying, “after the fight I want to teach Mir how to wrestle”…I mean this is one of the most disrespectful things i have ever heard to build up a fight. Mir is just a freaking EgoManiac….At least egoManiacs like Hughes have accomplished enough to have an ego…but Mir? come on man!

To me this is very disrespectful. Brock wants Mir so bad, but does anyone actually think that Mir looks forward to fiughting Brock again? I dont think so!

David W-S: makes a great point. Mir should appreciate Brock making him relevant again. Beating brock fast tracked Mir to a title shot. Prior to getting a title shot against Nog, Mir was on a measly 2 fight winning streak beating a c-level fighter like Hardonk, and a fighter in Brock with 1 fight under his belt….Had Brock not had such a big name,. Mir would realistically still be about 3 wins away from a title shot.

I just cant stand Mir. His jits is above average, but I dont know excactly how good it is because he never competed in ADCC, and he hasnt faced anyone good on the ground in mma. He faced Cruz, and Nog but those fights didnt go to the ground.

Without Brock, Mir would still be NOTHING!!!!

by john on May 4, 2009 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions

I agree bashing coaches is pretty classless but to be honest some coaches deserve to be bashed. For example I really didn’t like the training that Kimbo got. He didn’t seem to improve at all with any aspect of his game. His ground game was weak, his striking was amatuer and overall he didn’t improve one ounce after traing with Bas. If Mir is seeing the same thing with Brock I could see why it would be such a problem. So the point is he’s saying he’s making small mistakes when at his skill and ability level he should be able to do a lot better than this. He’s complimenting Brocks potential while at the same time dissing his coaches. I guess though we should all be very pissed that Mir isn’t always respectful and I see your point cause Lesnar is an all around class act. Mir is way into himself no doubt but I don’t think you can say Lesnar made him relavant. I think a weak HW division and him being a past title holder may have had something to do with it. Everyone in the HW division is becoming relavant after beating a few cans, its ridiculous and to be talking trash about Mir is even more ridiculous. He took his win with Brock and made the best out of it by beating Nog. Now he’s going to face Brock again win, and shut his pundits up. John you hate way to much. Mir by purple nurple!

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions

Yeah – except that he didn’t finish his training w/Bas, and in fact Bas was so disgusted w/Kimbo for not listening to him, he won’t work with him anymore. It wasn’t Bas, it was Kimbo. He refused to listen to Bas.

by Katrina on May 4, 2009 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t believe that bs for one second. The entire time Bas was talking about how Kimbo was improving and we would see it eventually… and how all this stuff takes time. Kimbo went and got laid out by a nobody and Bas had to back peddle to save his name. Bas was just as much about the benjamins baby as Kimbo so get over it.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions

I dont hate Mir, I just dont think he is very good, and having him AND Brock as champions make a mockery of the UFC HW division.
Difference is, I actually think Brock can become Dominant, where Mir is what he is!

Mir has been in the game a long time, and hasnt managed to prove ANYTHING. hE NEVER EVEN FACED GREAT COMPETITION. sure he beat Nogueira if you want to call that guy that lost Nogueira, i dont really care how that fight was viewed, it was trash either way.
Brock had 1 more mma fight then ALL of US when Mir beat him, so how imoressed should I really be over that win?

I dont think Mir can beat:
Fedor
Arlovski
Barnett
werdum
Herring
Couture (who I cant stand)
Alistar
Carwin
dos Santos
brock

Out of all the names i listed, if Mir fought all those names, he might win 3 fights, and thats being Generous! Sorry, but thats not how I picture my UFC Heavyweight champion!

Real Talk

I mean come on, He would get EXPOSED by a guy like werdum, who wont be holding titls anytime soon, so why should Mir?

by john on May 4, 2009 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Can someone smash this guy already. God i can’t stand him. I believe john has already covered the core ideas as to why “Mur” sucks. What i have worse than anything is that they’re gonna use his stoppage of Nog to make him into a god. It’s times like these that make me wish captain paycheck was the first to stop Nog instead of this hyped up can.

by NameNotRequired on May 4, 2009 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I am not looking forward to how they will hype up Mir with his win over Nog…As if that was really NOgueira out there!

Antoni Hardonk would have destroyed Nog in the shape he was in that night, so how can I put much value on Mir beating Nog?

When Mir fought Brock Lesnar, Brock had 1 fight on his resume more then all of us…….Beating Brock, who was 1-0, got him a title shot, yet he complains that Brock got a title shot?

I cant stand this “smug Bugz Bunny” Look alike!!

Hughes = Smug Chipmunk
Mir = Smug Bugz Bunny!

by john on May 4, 2009 7:47 PM EDT up reply actions

lol, whats up doc?hopefully Brock will smash him back into his little rabbit hole.

by scott on May 4, 2009 7:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m simply curious as to how both of these guys’ egos will fit in the cage at the same time?

by chefdaddy on May 4, 2009 7:58 PM EDT up reply actions

they want have to be in there long, because Mur’s will be flattened within the first couple of minutes

by scott on May 4, 2009 8:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The real deal is that the ref needed to help Mir the first time they fought. That fight should of been called instead of going back to their feet for a back of the head strike. They had already decided that Mir was going to be on TUF and couldn’t have a newbie beating him in before the show was about to start. So they gave him a fight against Brock who they didnt mind see loosing in his first UFC fight. That fight gave Mir more exposure than anything he had ever done before as more people watched it because of Lesnar than any other of his fights. I really, really hope Brock smashes Mir. Mir is great on the ground so you never know but without the ref helping him this time and Lesnar being more experienced and getting great training now hopefully Mir will be shut up for good.

by ASR on May 16, 2009 9:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree… with all the hype surrounding Brock people tend to forget that Mir made Brock tap within seconds…tough fight to call but I’m going with Mir…although the Randy win was impressive

by Robert(1) on May 4, 2009 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions

While I agree that Brock has holes in his game, to say he has no stand up is incorrect. He dropped Mir in the first fight with a puch after they were stood up and probably could have won if he kept it on the feet. He made Herring do a back somersault with a punch and he dazed Randy with an elbow from his feet, so when does any of that become good enough stand up?

by getrawbc on May 4, 2009 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions

ARE YOU GUYS SERIOUS!!!!!!!!!!!! I thught that this was obvious, but I guess not.

Mir has said a thousand times all that stuff about how the fight starts long before you enter the cage. You have to get into your opponents mind. Some guys lose before the bell rings….blah, blah, blah.

This is Mir doing his best to cast doubt into the heart of Lesnar.

He knows Brock is bigger, stronger, faster. So when he sits down to think about how to beat him and asks himself “what advantages do I have that I can exploit?” One, is that he holds a vicotory over Brock. The other is that he has more experience. The final is that he is more technical. So if he can put that in the back of Brock’s mind, maybe he can gain a small edge. Plus, I think Mir is afraid of getting bum rushed and Donkey Kong pounded. So if he can call out brock on his technical skills, maybe Brock will apporach the fight more technically and that serves Mir.

Mir could simply say, “Brock sucks technically,” but he’s a little smarter than that so an offer to coach him one day might get the job done a little better.

Let’s not forget that Mir talked a big game before fighting Nog and then admitted to the world after the fight that he was afraid. He showed a ton of respect to Nog.

Mir isn’t as smug as many of you think. He believes in the mental part of the game.

I love Mir. I think he loses this fight, but I’m still a fan. I think if he were dumber he wouldn’t get all the accusations of being smug.

by Punch You in the Ovaries on May 4, 2009 12:12 PM EDT up reply actions

I’d posit that this is an area where Lesnar’s WWE experience helps him—he knows that trash talk is all scripted, full of crap, and done to promote the fight.

Were I Mir, I’d be a douchebag. Also, I’d try puffing Lesnar up instead and making yourself out to be the underdog, but Frank doesn’t have the psychology to pull that off.

by TheIlluminati on May 4, 2009 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Well said Punch, that is exactly what Mir is doing.

by Gord on May 5, 2009 12:13 AM EDT up reply actions

who wants to put some jack on Mir having excuses if Brock beats him. i’d be willing to bet that frank has already thought the excuses up in his mind. he’s kinda like bj penn, bj use to not train hard for his biggest fights, i believe this was done in order to have a built in excuse as to why he lost. kinda like this past year when Beanie Wells didn’t play for OSU against USC, Tressel knew his team would got throttled either way, but if he held Wells out, when it came time to pick a team for the National Championship, he was then able to say, “yeah, we had one loss, but it was without our starting RB”, built in excuses are for weak minded people who don’t have much confidence in themselves considering their opponent

by deuce 4 on May 4, 2009 9:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Could you give me an example of when Mir has done this in the past? Or are you just mad that Mir is a cocky SOB?

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 10:47 AM EDT up reply actions

haha yeah. i mean i personally like mir. hes cocky but i think he does it to get a rise out of people b.c of the way he grins when hes talking trash. i mean mir has never disrespected anyone. its funny how he talks shit, he builds the person up just to break them down, its like hes talking shit in the most respectful way possible which i find funny and is why i like him.

i like brock too, ill admit at first he acted like he was still in wwe but hes come out of that.

my prediction… mir by experience once again, two years from now noone will beat brock lesnar.

by Phil on May 4, 2009 8:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Man, that’s smug. I hope he eats a tree trunk knee shooting in on Brock.

by Sir Chokemout on May 4, 2009 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions

Trying to get inside of Brocks head a little bit I guess. I hope Brock smashes this guys head just like the first fight….but actually finishes him.

by Mike on May 4, 2009 7:00 AM EDT reply actions

beat him 99.9%? interesting given ham has lost 100% so far. love frank and his submission game, especially now that he has his head back on straight. have to hype the fight a little but hope he is really not getting this arrogant. he should still win but taking any opponent lightly espesially one the size of a house is dangerous.

by patrick daly on May 4, 2009 7:03 AM EDT reply actions

Yea I’m a fan of Mir too, I hope he trains really hard for this one and comes in looking solid (which he never really does). As for Brock, I don’t think he’ll look much better than the first time, the only difference will be that he takes his time. Lesnars also such a big guy and he’s getting old…he has probably already started to slow down a bit.

by ja434650 on May 4, 2009 7:38 AM EDT up reply actions

Brocks only 30 or 31, for (boxing) thats old. But in MMA hes got atleast 7 to 8 good yrs.

by JV on May 4, 2009 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions

Funny, I haven’t heard any boxing analysts refer to Manny Paquiao as “old” lately. I must have missed it.

Thirty is old for tennis, and it’s getting there for soccer. In any other sport it is the middle or back end of your physical prime.

by Jeremyjackson on May 4, 2009 3:24 PM EDT up reply actions

His age would become a factor if he was in the lighter categories… you can easily fight until you’re 40 at HW and well past that if you look after yourself.

by DJ on May 4, 2009 8:09 AM EDT up reply actions

I think it matters in the lighter weights cos you have to cut weight, lesners has to cut something like 25 pounds so i think it might prove a factor

by Nokia on May 4, 2009 8:49 AM EDT up reply actions

While the issue of cutting weight came up I have a question. The other day I was thinking about how when Brock and Randy fought the weigh-in was a week before the fight(or was I really high for a week?). Anyways, if it was a week before the fight, how often does that happen? Seems like most of the time weigh-ins are day before. I was just wondering what you guys thought about that.

by Diceman on May 4, 2009 11:49 PM EDT up reply actions

A bit of gamesmanship from Mir. Let the head games begin. Mir by sub in the 2nd…

Frank Mir likes to talk but I’m sure this Brock Lesnar will be different to what he saw the first time.

by Nick on May 4, 2009 7:09 AM EDT reply actions

Mir has always been a talker, no surprises there. But I totally agree with Nick in that Brock will be different than the first time.

I know every trainer always says this but they say Brock is like a sponge in the gym. And lets not forget that Brock had all of 1 professional fight before facing Mir. He will be different. Just how different remains to be seen.

by WB on May 4, 2009 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m sure Brock won’t have anything to say about this at all. He’ll probably be really humble and admit that he can learn a lot from an accomplished opponent like Frank.

Lol I’ll take that bet.

by Cogito Ergo Sum on May 4, 2009 10:49 AM EDT up reply actions

Mir is scared, you can tell by all the look in his face in all the interviews he does.

He was mad happy to get out of the first one with that submission. He doesnt want any piece of a better brock then their previous fight.

frank muuurrr will get what’s coming to him, a serious shit kicking, lesnar will man handle muuuurrrr, and then pronounce his name wrong, again, mir is cocky and has alot to learn if he thinks he is fighting the same lesnar as their first fight, lesnar will destroy mir , 2nd round by anvils to the head.

by daz on May 4, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions

Mir is cocky, but he’s good. Whether people think that he sucks or something, need to realize he is interim champ. I’m not much on Lesnar right now, until he has more fights. But I can’t say he’s not good, he beat Couture. It will be a rival fight, and I can’t wait until this fight is here. Standing Brock Lesnar will win, on the ground, Frank Mir will hand him another loss.

by E. Fairway on May 4, 2009 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

Actually, Mir isn’t really that good. He beat Tim sylvia, who was very average. He beat a 50% Nog and got his butt knocked out in the first round by a pudgey, overweight Brandon Vera. A guy that is a true light heavy weight. Brock will beat him easily this fight.

Just a mind game hoping to throw off brock

by ognitinoc on May 4, 2009 11:48 AM EDT reply actions

I think the main weakness with brock is his body isnt really that coordinatd. Especially his legs u can see it in the herring fight where he couldnt stay on his back because he wasnt able to lock his legs in. I just dont think its possible for him to be good at jitsu when his body is that big.

by DESPERUS on May 4, 2009 12:24 PM EDT reply actions

He doesn’t need to be good at JJ…. he needs good JJ defense. That’s it as far as the ground game goes. As long as that monster learns sub defense he is going to dominate.

Mir can talk all he wants but what other fighter has steped into the UFC and fought a Former Champ in his first bout. Brock is the real deal and Mir is scared. He got lucky in the first fight when Brock was pounding him out and was forced to stand up. Brock made one mistake and that cost him the fight. But now with Three UFC Fights and a Belt he will be ready and unlikely to make a rookie mistake again. By the way how can anyone dislike a humble Champ. I have heard Brock say nothing bad about Mir and have heard nothing from him hyping the fight. I say Brock TKO Round 2.

These two has been trash talking for some time now. Funny how people really take these statements seriously and (scarely) personal.

As soon as this fight was announced, my gut feelin was brock is goin to hurt him bad this time w/ strikes…. Now, the more i think abt it i dont know who will win. Im a huge Mir fan. The ppl that think Frank is garbage dont know much. Hes has that rare instinct/ability to grab peoples arms or legs and just do bad things to them. U can teach ppl jits but not like that. That bein said, i wouldnt want to risk my own cash bettin on Mir this fight. Brock is like a rhino. What does everyone think Mir’s gameplan is gonna be? Throw some strikes and see what happens?? Avoid the “Hamhocks”?

by Antdogg1110 on May 4, 2009 2:56 PM EDT reply actions

I can’t stand Mir. I thought first fight was Bullshit. I was so pissed after the Ref stood it up because brock hit him in the back of the head. Brock will Destroy Mir and I think Mir trying to get into Brocks head is a mistake. I think Brock will want to hurt him and I’m pretty sure he can.

by Anderson Silva on May 4, 2009 3:00 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah he wants to get Brock angry and hope he gets over aggressive again. I like the fact that he’s trying to play mind games I realy don’t think he has much of a chance against Brock who can control Mir on the ground he just needs to make sure he doesn’y put himself in a situatio were he can’t defend against a submission move by getting over aggressive just stay calm and pound away I wouldn’t be suprised if Brock has been traiing a little BJJ himself and finishes Mir with a sub…That would be the ultimate insult against Mir.

by Beaver on May 4, 2009 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

he has, I forget what belt they say he has now,but I think he is scared to use it in fights, because there was many times in the Herring fight where he could have put in a rear naked choke and he just would not do it,with that said he would not use it against Mur,now he would use some defense that he has learned but I just can not see him going for a submission, but it would be hilarious

by scott on May 4, 2009 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Smart move by Mir, but it’s not going to make much difference in the fight this time.

I think Brock will be smart to take things a little slower than the first fight, and intelligently turn the power on and apply the hams when he needs them. He should keep it standing in the first round using the sprawl and brawl technique. If Brock takes is slow and actually finds out what it means to win a round without nearly blowing his wad, he will take the victory. He needs to revert to his NCAA wresting days and take it like a match where 1 point will determine the match. He needs to turn the defense way up, and use his devastating offense a little more sparingly.

My pick is the intelligent and coachable Brock.

I try to be a brock lesnar fan but it just doesnt work. There is something abt brock that i just dont like. I cant pinpoint exactly what it is. by Jeremyjackson on May 4, 2009 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Obviously Mir knows a lot more than Brock, but I can’t see these comments not pissing Lesnar off. Mir will have his chances (in the rematch against Lesnar), but the fact is he was lucky to survive the first fight and he will be even luckier to survive the second. And if Lesnar was technically sound no one would beat him.

I’d just like to see Brock lose and learn enough humility to stop referring to himself in the 3rd person.

Though I want Mir to win (just cant stand a 2-1 champ), he cant go on talking too much smack as Brock could beat him,he was being beaten badly till he subbed him.

Coach Brock?? I like Mir but he seems so cocky lately in his last couple of interviews. But then again, so is Brock (especially since he has one on his chestnar).

Mir —> tko by mental fortitude and gamesmanship.

On a side note: If any ref besides mazagatti is in there, Murr loses badly.
