UFC Quick Quote: Matt Hughes would 'love to rematch' Thiago Alves and GSP

If I beat Serra -- and I obviously think I will -- and Thiago wins I'd love to get a rematch with Thiago. I think that fight could have gone differently if my knee hadn't gone out, so I'd love to rematch Thiago. To be honest, I didn't like the way the last GSP fight went either, so I'd love to rematch GSP. But all I'm worrying about right now is Matt Serra. So where ever winning that fight puts me is fine, but I've just got Matt Serra on my mind right now.
– Former UFC welterweight champion Matt Hughes tells MMA Fanhouse that he would 'love to rematch' Thiago Alves or even 170-pound kingpin Georges St. Pierre sometime in the near future. First order of business is to dispatch Matt Serra at UFC 98 on May 23 but no question that farmer Hughes will be keeping a close eye on the events of July 11 when "Rush" takes on the "Pitbull." Whether or not he's doing that from the stands or from his retirement home all depends on the success of Matt Serra -- or lack thereof.

Not to mention Alves came in as a Middle weight in that fight so I dont count that loss against Hughes. ANyone that comes in over weight doesnt get any respect from me if they win.

It’d be a great fight I’d think

Ok.. I’ve always been a big supporter of Matt Hughes, but he doesn’t need to fight Georges again. But you can’t hold it against someone to want to fight a guy they lost to again. Chuck wanted to rematch everyone that ever beat him, and he still wants to do that (how many times has he called out Jardine?) Whether or not he gets those rematchs remains to be seen, but dont flame a guy just because he wants to rematch some losses.
by Synyster on May 2, 2009 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions
At least Jardine has lost fights in the last couple years. He isn’t that far ahead of Liddell on the LHW depth chart.
Hughes is dead serious about taking on the two consensus top welterweights in the world… by beating a blown-up lightweight with one fight in almost two years.
Hughes is a delusional moron. His ego is incredible and every time he opens his mouth now it is borderline comical.

Well JJ,at least last time when he made a comical statement,he was on a stage. So i guess he was at the right place eh!

FOCK that SYNYSTER!!!!! U r my boy, but have you lost your damn mind? Do you not understand what Matt hughes is saying? In an indirect way, he thinks he should be the next challenger for the welterweight title. THats what it means to fight the winner of GSP vs. Alves. How the FOCK can anyone support this idea? Hughes’s Ego has officially EATEN his brain! this is just Ridiculous!!!!
n whats he talking about the Alves fight would have gone different had he not blown out his knee? He blew his Knee out when Alves’ KO’ed “The SMUG CHIPMUNK”, and Matt fell weird and it ruined his knee….he had already lost the fight before his knee gave out….Just more trash out of his mouth to pamper his Ego.
Who watches Southpark? Hughes reminds me of Kanya West on the episode a few weeks back…thats what typ0e of egomaniac Hughes is! What a joke….
John: Hey Matt Hughes Do you like Fishdicks?
Hughes: Yeah, I love fishsticks
John: Do you like to put Fishdicks in your mouth?
Hughes: Yes
John: what r u? a Gay Fish? Lol
Hughes: I am an mma Genius! THe voice of a whole mma Generation….blah, blah, blah!!!!!!

U guys are all missing the point! dont you realize what this means? It means that Egomaniac feels he deserved to be the next #1 contender for the title with a win over Serra.
Hughes’s Ego has swallowed him HOLE!!!

Jesse, this pic has to be the poorest respect you have ever shown to a UFC champion and division…. the #1 challenger stands with arms raised, the #7 (or somewhere close) contender has the belt on and the champ is under a farm machine.
Unless of course, Hughes sent it to you… lol.

is he not the same guy who has said over and over again that Serra is not even a top ten fighter, now he thinks a win over him puts him back in the title picture. He needs to dominate Serra, then go and fight someone like Fitch or Kos.,and if he can destroy them(which will not happen)then he should get a rematch with Thiago, all so he can get smashed again

Serra TKO in the first. Hughes is a front runner. If you cold catch him, he’s toast.

I don’t think you understand the picture. It’s clearly GSP cutting the break line in an effort to get Hughes to STFU permanently while the other guy distracts Matt with waves of BO. The other piece that you don’t see is that there’s a mirror just off-camera and Matt’s marveling at just how awesome he is.

Don’t call me crazy man. Matt Hughes jumpstarted me into MMA, so I’m a life-long fan. I’m defending the fact that he wants to rematch the losses he got. I’m not saying he SHOULD get them, or would WIN them if he even got the opportunity. MAYBE if he wins and Alves loses they’ll give them that rematch, but thats it.
I DO NOT CONDONE BEATING MATT SERRA TO GET TO A TITLE SHOT!!!!

-just rumor but interesting none the less, and very believable
“UFC offered Cung Le $300,000 to fight Anderson, but he turned it down because he was offered more to do the movie “Fighting.”
.
I believe it and have even less respect for Le.
-
*Someone’s been trolling the Sherdog forums. Very believable? I don’t believe Cung Le – who does not have face recognition to the mainstream audience – made 300k (or more as the rumor claims) to do a bit part in a movie that was budgeted in the 20 million dollar range. And the source is the standard “some guy who trains with him at the gym I went to.”

I find that rumor hard to believe, krv.
We’ve seen how reluctant the UFC is to do one-fight deals… and I think Cung is still under contract to Strikeforce?
Dana would at least make him fight once or twice under the Zuffa banner before he gave him Anderson… otherwise it makes the UFC look weak, in that a second-tier promotion’s guy could get an immediate shot.
Cung would get his head knocked off. And if they gave him any top 10 UFC middleweight he would be submitted in the first round.
by Jeremyjackson on May 2, 2009 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions
you got me Jesse, I love the idiotic posts over at sherdog. I find it believable simply because Dana would offer Le a one fight deal knowing he’d lose, Fedor won’t get one because he’d be champ and they don’t want a champ to bolt. 300k for a bit part, stunts etc is quite believable! I didn’t read the movie had a 20 mil. budget, but if thats the case, 300k is very believable! Yes Jesse, I read other sires, I’m not John, I don’t pass along every rumor I hear, just the ones I have links to or sources, and in this very rare case, one that I happen to believe. I also started by saying “strictly rumor” for a reason! I love when you hijack my posts, I literally laugh, it’s funny!

did some google work Jesse, he has 3 other Chatum Tanning (or whatever) projects going. The more than 300k figure comes from the whole deal, not just fighting. He is “training” and choreographing fight scenes. He isn’t even concerned with his “title” anymore, just movies! thats a quote!

Agree 100%. I have always liked hughes. He did lose those fights, but The alves fight was harder to stomach because he came in heavy because he knew hughes wouldnt turn the fight down. the last losses were to the top guys in the ufcs WW.
with that being said. I have to agree he hasnt evolved and isnt focused on just the fight ahead of him, which could be very bad for him. I just wish he woulda went to train at a different camp for a few weeks if nothing else.

I rematch with GSP I have absolutely interest in.
Alves did come in grossly overweight so that is the only reason a rematch with him slightly intrigues me. Don’t know who said it but him vs Kos would be pretty sick.

No it was Kos who came in at 90 to take on Alves when Diego got injured, both Hughes and Alves agreed to main event 85 on short notice. At the time I was pissed that Alves came in overweight but after his destruction of Hughes and Kos, as well as Karo, I can’t help but like the guy as I hate all 3 of them.

by Ti Odio on May 3, 2009 2:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Old legends die hard I guess. I can’t be too tough on Hughes for this statement (no matter how absurd) as part of the mentality of ANY fighter is too believe they can beat anyone put in front of them. We are definitely seeing a pattern lately of former dominant champions struggling to realize the sport is continuing to evolve past the limited skill sets they possessed during their primes. Result….we will see Hughes take at least one more lopsided ars-kicking before the light bulb clicks on.
by CL on May 2, 2009 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Apparently his light bulb is burnt out, because if it didn’t turn on after the last 2 lopsided beatdowns GSP gave him, it never will. The guy has an ego bigger than Tito’s head and he just can’t accept the fact that his days at the top are long gone. I don’t think he is washed up like many do, but his heart just doesn’t seem to be in it anymore and guys like GSP, Fitch, Alves and Kos have passed him by and all of them would school him. Some people think Kos would be a good fight, but Hughes won’t be able to take him down and it would only be a matter of time before Kos landed one of those wild haymakers.

Didnt Hughes knee go out when Alves flying kneed him into unconciousness? Does he not understand that GSP finds a different way to beat him down each fight. I thought having to scream tap tap tap wouldve been enough to make him understand he has no chance.
by Hambone on May 2, 2009 12:19 PM EDT reply actions
I count it! He was 4 lbs more and Hughes would have got his ass kicked just the same.
by Oswald Gobblecock on May 2, 2009 12:25 PM EDT reply actions
yeah alves could have come in 20lbs less than hughes and still kicked his ass. Hughes hasnt evolved . GSP has beaten worse evrytime they fight, throwing him around like a rag doll last time, and hughes screaming I tap , I tap. Hughes needs to retire, the sport has passed him by.
by dtotorica on May 2, 2009 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions
Not counting a loss because of 4 pounds is a joke! Top fighters in Pride spent years fighting heavier opponents. I dont think Sakuraba ever faced anyone his own siZE THAT wasnt named Gracie…
Wanderlei lost to cro cop and Mark Hunt..who dwarfed wandy in size…should we not count those fights as losses either? where does it stop?
by john on May 2, 2009 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions
You have a point john, but it IS a huge advantage when one guy is dehydrated and busting his ass to make weight and one isn’t.
I don’t think PRIDE is the model we should use for fights being on a level playing field. They didn’t even test for poerformanve enhancers. In PRIDE it was more about entertainment and spectacle than fair athletic competition.
That said, I have a soft spot for freak shows and PRIDE did put on some of the greatest fights ever, especially at LHW and HW.
by Jeremyjackson on May 2, 2009 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions
i dont disagree with your post, but IMO, real fighters could care less about 4 lbs…..Say Rich Franklin comes in 4 lbs over to fight wandy and beats wandy….U will NEVER hear wandy complaining about those 4 lbs and make excuses. NEVER!

I have a few problems with this quote. First, if Serra is the only fight on your mind, why are you talking about Alves and GSP? Second, even at weight Alves would take Matt and I don’t think anyone doubts GSP would take Matt. Third, you didn’t like the way the last GSP fight went? Would that have to do with the fact that you lost? Matt the definition of an idiot is someone who keeps trying the same thing over and over, but expects a different result. Matt is a great wrestling, no doubt. That said, has his game evolved to the point where he can challenge for a title again? We’ll see when he fights Serra.

by kevin on May 2, 2009 2:15 PM EDT up reply actions
I actually like Serra, he has a decent record and has faced some top guys. I don’t think he’s ever had the respect that he deserves, considering that he’s pretty much fighting at a weight class too high yet he’s still won that belt after KO’g the top ww of all time GSP. He proved on TUF 4 and 6 that he’s a quality coach and came off very well in both reality shows so he has mainstream name value and if he can recover from his injury problems he’ll continue to suprise a few people.
Hughes is a legend who I’d have more respect for if he shut up but he’s past his best and he won’t trouble the top ww’s anymore. He’s already been destroyed by GSP twice as well as Alves and he didn’t look that great in his UD over Lytle. If Hughes wins this fight then he should be given guys like Johnson or Koscheck (only because he’s lost 2 of his last 3) if he wants to remain relevant in the ww division.

The UFC brass was very aware of an injury Alves sustained prior to his match against Hughes. His inability to properly train hindered his weight loss. > Very few fighters fight at 100, ask Big Nog.
Ever since Anderson Silva first victory against Rich Franklin, Matt Hughes has been talking about moving up in weight to face the MW champion. He feels that Silva has some holes in his game that he can exploit. > I think Dan Henderson saw those same holes.
He’s currently 1-2 against GSP.
He better hop that Serra doesn’t beat him.

Hughes will get his ass handed to him no probs by either GSP or Alves.

As much as i LOVE karo parisyan, karo is behind koscheck right now and with his injuries and shortcomming and assuming matt hughes coming from a loss to koscheck. It would determine where karo and hughe would stand againts the rest of the competetion and up and commers cause there both barley hanging on.
To some some small extent same can be said about koscheck, well koscheck is in a bit of a limbo right now. But both karo and koscheck are FUCKIN legends in wrestling/judo and they would in my opinion SCHOOL hughes so would ma buddy Joe Diesel Riggs

Personally, I think guys like Hughes and Liddell should have retired a while ago while they were on top. If a fighter retires on top, they are always seen as invinsible. Take Rocky Marciano for example, if he had lost a few fights to end his career he wouldn’t be quite the legend he is today.
With that said, I also believe it’s a personal decision and understand the desire these guys have to fight. If guys like Hughes and Liddell have fun fighting and want to fight, I support that.
by ja434650 on May 2, 2009 1:52 PM EDT reply actions
do you also support the public liability that comes with the potential serious physical damage these fighters can take if they put aside their capabilities and choose to follow their desire to fight, even though the sport has passed them by? i know where you are coming from, but i wouldn’t enjoy seeing chuck liddell or matt hughes get seriously belted one more time. its not fair on what they worked to achieve, themselves or those around them. I dare say Dana even seems to not want to see it with his recent comments regarding Chuck.

Some may laugh. Go ahead. I know a long layoff hurts alot of fighters, but it helps some. And Hughes has access to train with the top fighters and trainers in the world. He has the money to hire them and the name recognition to convince them to get on board. I believe you can teach some old dogs new tricks. I’ve seen it. On the other hand I also have to say that he has nothing left to prove, even if he called it quits after this fight. You folks are talking this too literally.
1. Hughes doesn’t think he can beat Alves or GSP.

Wondered why so many losers came out saying GSP felt slippery when they got destroyed? It’s because if they ever were to get a rematch, they would cash in.
Money, money, money, is the only reason guys like Hughes talk like that, to try to influence matchmaker Joe Silva. To show they can hype it. Do they think they deserve a shot? Probably not. They can’t all be that dumb.

Call it big ego if ya want, I appreciate the fact that he didn’t back down.

I think the number 1 contender after alves is fitch but gsp already beat him. he has also beaten kos. mike swick is near the top if he beats saunders maybe he gets a shot he destroyed marcus davis who is good. put fitch in with anthony johnson. The only guy I see beating GSP is Alves but how does Alves do off his back? GSP has great takedowns but one knee and it is over.

Matt Hughes is an egomaniac. He’s also a one dimensional fighter who probably couldn’t beat my grandma anymore. He’s not a true mixed martial artist, the sport has passed him by.

another slaying by GSP would be entertaining but not worth paying for……free on tv would be ok but Hughes is not on the same level as GSP……washed up……retire.

The only way Hughes could beat Alves or GSP is running over them with that big ass tractor of his….

Good one, another way that Matt Hughes could ever beat GSP, Alves and even Fitch would be to shoot them with one of his guns that he hunts with and loves so much. Matt Hughes is a strong wrestler and redneck who was on top for many years but now his reign is over and time has passed him by. He is still a good fighter but not on the caliber of UFC top 10 Welteweights. I would like to see him fight Koscheck in one of the upcoming events if he can beat Serra decisevly.

‘Matt Hughes is the world’s biggest arsehole’. Discuss.

Matt Hughes could beat Gsp, Alves and Fitch only if he shot them with one of his guns that he loves to hunt with. The guy is an egomanic and a redneck. He was on top for a wile but his time has passed. Now is GSP’s time so sorry Matt ur reign as a champ is long gone. I think if he beat Serra a fight with Koscheck would be interesting.

Ya I guess his ego must be up there with bj penns. After getting completely and utterly embarrassed, both hughes and penn want a rematch??? LOL penn called hughes a pussy after his second loss to gsp, and wondered how he’ll come back after such and embarrassing loss….karma’s a bitch. I wonder if hughes even saw his fights with gsp and alves, they were pretty damn one sided, he has nothing in his arsenal that leads me to believe he has much of a chance.
His fight with lytle was pretty damn boring, and serra is better than lytle on the ground, hughes needs to spend all his energy focusing on serra. I think hughes like chuck really wants to go down with a blaze of glory and retiring with the belt I think is what both chuck and hughes wanted but its just not going to happen, sorry hughes even jesus can’t make that happen.

I thought Hughes had said that the Serra fight was going to be his last fight.
What is it with this Shamrock trend nowadays? Everyone wants to fight past their prime and tarnish their name and legacy just for the green. First Liddell and now Hughes.

He sees an opening to retire as champion again, that is all.
Come on Dana, put this guy in his place. He fights Serra and gets out.
