Liver shot: Hydroxycut recalled after FDA links supplement to liver damage and death

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers to immediately stop using Hydroxycut products by Iovate Health Sciences Inc., of Oakville, Ontario and distributed by Iovate Health Sciences USA Inc. of Blasdell, N.Y. Some Hydroxycut products are associated with a number of serious liver injuries. Iovate has agreed to recall Hydroxycut products from the market.

The FDA has received 23 reports of serious health problems ranging from jaundice and elevated liver enzymes, an indicator of potential liver injury, to liver damage requiring liver transplant. One death due to liver failure has been reported to the FDA. Other health problems reported include seizures; cardiovascular disorders; and rhabdomyolysis, a type of muscle damage that can lead to other serious health problems such as kidney failure.

Liver injury, although rare, was reported by patients at the doses of Hydroxycut recommended on the bottle. Symptoms of liver injury include jaundice (yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes) and brown urine. Other symptoms include nausea, vomiting, light-colored stools, excessive fatigue, weakness, stomach or abdominal pain, itching, and loss of appetite.

"The FDA urges consumers to discontinue use of Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk. Adverse events are rare, but exist. Consumers should consult a physician or other health care professional if they are experiencing symptoms possibly associated with these products," said Linda Katz, M.D., interim chief medical officer of the FDA’s Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.

Hydroxycut products are dietary supplements that are marketed for weight-loss, as fat burners, as energy-enhancers, as low carb diet aids, and for water loss under the Iovate and MuscleTech brand names.

The list of products being recalled by Iovate currently includes:

Star-divide

Hydroxycut Regular Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Rapid Release Caplets
Hydroxycut Hardcore Liquid Caplets
Hydroxycut Max Liquid Caplets
Hydroxycut Regular Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Caffeine-Free Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Hardcore Drink Packets (Ignition Stix)
Hydroxycut Max Drink Packets
Hydroxycut Liquid Shots
Hydroxycut Hardcore RTDs (Ready-to-Drink)
Hydroxycut Max Aqua Shed
Hydroxycut 24
Hydroxycut Carb Control
Hydroxycut Natural

Although the FDA has not received reports of serious liver-related adverse reactions for all Hydroxycut products, Iovate has agreed to recall all the products listed above. Hydroxycut Cleanse and Hoodia products are not affected by the recall. Consumers who have any of the products involved in the recall are advised to stop using them and to return them to the place of purchase. The agency has not yet determined which ingredients, dosages, or other health-related factors may be associated with risks related to these Hydroxycut products. The products contain a variety of ingredients and herbal extracts.

Health care professionals and consumers are encouraged to report serious adverse events (side effects) or product quality problems with the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Adverse Event Reporting program online, by regular mail, fax or phone.

–Online: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/report.htm
–Regular Mail: Use FDA postage paid form 3500 found at: www.fda.gov/MedWatch/getforms.htm and mail to MedWatch, 5600 Fishers Lane, Rockville, MD 20852-9787
–Fax: 800-FDA-0178
–Phone: 800-FDA-1088

The FDA continues to investigate the potential relationship between Hydroxycut dietary supplements and liver injury or other potentially serious side effects.

I actually bought one bottle, took it 1 day and couldn’t sleep and said F this stuff. So I have a full bottle, I want my money back if it is dangerous.

LOL. My sentiments exactly. A little hard work and determination.

Jeremy-

You would be surprised at how many dumb f*ucks take artificial shortcuts just to drop a few pounds.

by OJR on May 1, 2009 6:04 PM EDT up reply actions

no surprise here, anything you take that was made in a laboratory cant be good for you. then again, im sure the people that experienced health problems took it in crazy amounts. if you’re going to take something like this stuff at least do it in moderation.

I used to take this stuff back in the day and gave me massive throbbing headaches at times.. i tossed it and never took it again.. Made me feel like i drank 10 cups of coffee.. The formulation changed when ma-huang (ephedra) was banned by the FDA in 2003 (linked to causing strokes i think).. The stuff certainly works, although my body can’t take all those artificial chemicals anymore.. none of this stuff can be good for you in the long run

It worked great for me when I took it, but damn that makes me wonder if I f*cked myself up in the process. I’ve since found that just reading up on metabolism and learning what to eat to keep hormone levels at maximum efficiency works best for me.

and people say steroids are dangerous…HA

idiots

by zachy on May 1, 2009 5:22 PM EDT reply actions

Those people are right. I don’t think Hydroxycut has the market cornered on dangerous.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions

lol JJ.
i took hydroxycut a few years ago…shit works great!

by kevin on May 1, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Not really. Nobody has ever died as a direct result of using AAS.

by zachy on May 2, 2009 9:58 AM EDT up reply actions

This is exactly why I don’t take supplements. Stick to food sources and hard work. THAT will get you results.

by Clint on May 1, 2009 5:41 PM EDT reply actions

F me, I’ve been taking Hydroxycut Hardcore for the past month and a half. It’s like I’ve been smoking…paying high prices to slowly kill yourself

by deathreat on May 1, 2009 6:01 PM EDT reply actions

Not everyone who takes this crap is fat. I’ve never been fat and I took it for a whole month to get ripped faster because it helps you lower your body fat. I definitely works, but at what cost? I guess I’ll have my liver checked.

Jog 15 minutes a day. Eat right. Sleep 5-7 hours a night on a normal schedule. You would think it would be harder with all the junk people take instead of doing it right

by EazyEismydad on May 1, 2009 10:34 PM EDT reply actions

Man, I used to snort this about 8 of these a day for energy, then handfuls of sleeping pills at night to sleep. Dumb as fuck, but damn, it was seriously about a year of being in this supercharged numb state. I could honestly run around like a coke fiend and then crash out whenever I wanted to, and then repeat the whole damn thing. Good times. The combo seriously messed with time perception, and gave some lucid dreams that were quite fun.

The ingredient in the product causing the liver damage is the Methyl 17 Alpha-Hydroxy-Yohimban-16 Alpha-Carboxylate Hydrochloride.

The Methyl group is toxic to the liver.

by natedog77 on May 2, 2009 1:28 AM EDT reply actions

I see you looked up the ingredients to appear intelligent, natedog. Bravo.

by Brandon on May 2, 2009 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

everyone on this page is a fuckin idiot if the read the Recall article there have been 23 reports “OVER MORE THAN 7 YEARS”. Can anyone possibly imagine the “MILLIONS” of people who have taking this product. Did i foreget to mention “MILLIONS” of people they dont meniton how old they are, their health conditions prior to taking the supplement, how much of the product they actually took, what their life styles were like. These product arent made for everyone.
