Lil' Nog: Stop lying! Affliction is here to stay...

Props: Brasil Combate

Quoteworthy:

"A promotion that has Golden Boy promoter Oscar De La Hoya as an associate, and that might be making ties with HBO television, it is far from collapsing. Affliction has one of the richest men in the world and with a super cable network like HBO, it won’t finish. That’s a lie. The event will still last a long time."

Current Affliction mercenary and former PRIDE FC light heavyweight standout Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (16-3) remains vehemently optimistic about the future of Affliction, despite inside talk that a third event from "The T-shirt guys" could be their last. Affliction Veep Tom Atencio plans to hold a show sometime in summer 2009; however, will not commit to a firm date, location or venue because nothing is official at this time. In the interim, Lil' Nog will battle Dion Staring on May 9th at 'Jungle Fight' from his home turf in Brazil.

Lol I say we just all agree with Lil Nog for now. He has some decent points. And when we all say Affliction is going to collapse after this event, no this one, no this one… we are just setting ourselves up to look petty and misinformed. I’m not a business man by any means so I’ll just stick to betting on the fights and casting my opinion on future fights. Long live the UFC, long live Affliction, and long live DREAM

Nog has a point, but only to a point. Like any investor, Oscar will only put so much money into a venture. If there is little to no return on that investment, he will pull the plug and put his money elsewhere.

by DJ on May 1, 2009 3:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think affliction has a future. I dont think anyone starting an mma organization is stupid enough to think they wont lose lots of money in the beginning. I think Afflictions investors KNOW this, and have been making pay cuts to ensure they last!

I know Im rooting for affliction!

I think for other American promotion to succeed, they need to start at the grass-roots level. Purchase smaller shows, develop talented young fighters and market their product more effectively.

Signing a handful of UFC fighters for huge amounts and pitting them against each other will only result in few decent cards before you run out of matchups… and investors.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If affliction goes away- the good enough fighters will go to the UFC and the ones who have been there and couldn’t cut it will go to bolster strikeforce allowing for all kinds of great matchups. Affliction really splinters these groups into shallower divisions and they sit out for months at a time. I realize that competition is needed in the marketplace but with strikeforce and the UFC- they are not competing against each other and each has a different mission/goal. one is the pinnacle of MMA and the other great interesting matchups. Affliction just seems to have no direction. That’s why i don’t think it offers anything as a promotion aside from handing out fistfuls of cash. If only it had better leadership and knew the product they want to deliver, i could get behind them.

get this dude in the UFC

by BMO on May 2, 2009 4:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well if Lil’ Nog says they are here to stay it has to be true… One more event and these douches are done for. If that.

by jay on May 1, 2009 1:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

LOL. Why are they douches? Affliction = more MMA for us as fans. You should be rooting for them to stay alive. I like the UFC but I want other orgs to stick around so we can have more diversity.

x2!

I still would like to see Barnett destroy Fedor.

by Jay K. on May 1, 2009 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

stylistically he has a good shot at taking out fedor but i still think arlovski was a bigger thread. if arlovski had any sort of chin i still believe he would have beaten fedor

by Jared on May 1, 2009 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The punch Fedor landed on AA would have knocked out a horse! If If If If blah blah blah blah, Fedor always finds a way to win!

by attakdog on May 1, 2009 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i believe barnett stands a better chance than arlovski did… but how much of a chance is it??

i would love to see barnett win it would put an end to all this ‘Fedor is undefeated’ crap that i have to read about and listen to day in and day out

by ufcaddict on May 1, 2009 1:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

As a child in Mother Russia, Fedor used to walk barefoot into the frozen wastes of Siberia and KO polar bears for sport.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lol Jeremy.

ufcaddict,I agree with you!
But the only thing do we really wanna see Fedor fall to Barnett come on he is a douche!!It would have been awesome to see Arlovski beat fedor but he got stupid and payed for it that moron.

by BMO on May 2, 2009 4:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i want this guy to come to ufc. i dont think his chin is that great anymore just like his bros. he god ko’d by soko and got badly rocked by vlady, but who cares this dude puts up exciting fights and i would love to see him kick thiago silvas ass

by Jared on May 1, 2009 1:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Soko would KO anybody if he lands cleanly. There are a lot of holes in his game, but power ain’t one of ’em.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah great point Jared, Coz Big Nog’s been KO’d so many times!!! WTF???

by attakdog on May 1, 2009 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i just said if vlady can rock him im pretty sure rampage, chuck, rashad, jardine, and all those sluggers would do good against him.

by Jared on May 1, 2009 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed, Lil Nog needs to be in the UFC. With nearly his entire team there, i don’t know what’s the point of toiling away in a promotion with a very shallow LHW division.

by NameNotRequired on May 1, 2009 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d love to see this guy in the UFC…

by Fidel Cashflow on May 1, 2009 1:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Does anybody else find it just a little annoying that virtually every thread posted in this forum invariably finds it’s way back to Fedor?

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 1:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gee,thaks JJ to make me feel bad to have post a Fedor video in the Maia thread!

by Alpha Male 360 on May 1, 2009 1:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Affliction = Fedor

With out him they are nothing and they know that.

by Fokman on May 1, 2009 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If they don’t match him up with Barnett on their next card, then they will be nothing with him.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sounds like wishful thinking to me, but they say optimism is a good thing so more power to him.

by O damn he got caught on May 1, 2009 2:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Affliction have put on a couple of cracking cards but they don’t seem to know how to run a successful promotion, EliteXC proved that you can’t run a promotion based around one guy, even if he is Fedor, the best fighter in the world. The one time they tried to do a show without Fedor they had to postpone it until he could come back to main event with Arlovski. I personally think that Strikeforce has a better shot at being competetive with the UFC, as they have a more financially viable product and with the acquisition of Elite’s assets they have a well rounded roster and a network TV deal.

I don’t begrudge Affliction success as they allow fighters that wouldn’t get a chance on the UFC to fight in front of a wide audience, but they can’t pay their fighters the same numbers that they have for Fedor, Arlovski and Sylvia because they can’t make profits from their shows and unless they start making money then the owners of Affliction won’t continue funding MMA shows during an economic recession.

by David W-S on May 1, 2009 2:28 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s see…. Jerry Millen said PRIDE was far from dead and that they’d be just fine. Like a week later, UFC bought PRIDE.

Usually, when people come out to say they are doing just fine, the exact opposite is going on.

Oh and by the way, Oscar De La Hoya one of the richest men in the world? Please, he made a grip load for his fight with Mayweather, but since he retired, he can’t even crack the top 50 highest paid American athletes.

by Jeff on May 1, 2009 2:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think he may have been referring to Donald Trump.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well then I look like an idiot, eh?

by Jeff on May 1, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hmm, that would make me an idiot then.

Big gulp, huh? Welp, see ya later.

by Jeff on May 1, 2009 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL, don’t be so hard on yourself Jeff. Compared to a lot of guys here, you’re only half an idiot.

by Jeremyjackson on May 1, 2009 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah guys! I hope Affliction goes on.

by Edu on May 1, 2009 2:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Jeff on May 1, 2009 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WEC has more fans in the stands than Affliction and it’s fighters get 1/50th of the salaries. The next Affliction I see Fedor fighting Trumps buddy Hulk Hogan the former WWE champion LOL!!
