Demian Maia vs Nate Marquardt UFC 102 fight set for Aug. 29

Middleweight standouts, Nate Marquardt (28-8-2) and Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia (10-0), are set to collide at UFC 102 from The Rose Garden in Portland, Oregon, on August 29, according to Maia’s official site.

Marquardt is coming off a big win over Wilson Gouveia (12-5) at UFC 95, finishing the bout in the third round via technical knockout with a thrilling combination that looked like it had been lifted from a video game.

It was impressive to say the least.

Before that he demolished Martin Kampmann, beating him at his own game (the stand up) and forcing the Dane to rethink his career at 185 pounds and make the drop to welterweight.

Maia has been impressive in his own right as of late, too.

He has remained undefeated throughout his professional mixed martial arts career, winning five straight bouts inside the Octagon and earning four "submission of the night" bonuses during that span. His list of victims includes submission victories over the likes of Chael Sonnen (21-10-1), Nate Quarry (11-3) and Jason McDonald (21-12), among others.

It's safe to say Marquardt will do best to avoid going to the ground if possible against Maia.

With a win here both fighters would have a good case to argue for a title shot against 185-pound kingpin Anderson Silva (24-4). However, they may have to get in line and wait behind the winner of Dan Henderson (24-7) vs. Michal Bisping (18-1) -- the two coaches from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) are set to square off at UFC 100 on July 11.

UFC 102 is expected to feature a main event between Randy "The Natural" Couture locking horns with Antonio Rodrigo "Minotauro" Nogueira in a dream match-up that most fans expected to see before Brock Lesnar and Frank Mir played spoiler roles in the opening round of the mini heavyweight tournament created in late 2008 to crown an undisputed division champion.

Also slated for the main card is perennial light heavyweight contender Keith Jardine (14-5-1) who has been tapped to replace Forrest Griffin in a 205-pound slugfest against hard-hitting Brazilian import Thiago Silva (13-1).

UFC 102 is beginning to shape up quite nicely ... and we’re still four months away. To check out the latest UFC 102 fight card and rumors click here.

who cares, it only means you’re gay if you need to be first. It’ll be even better when someone else ends up ahead of you!
.

I like this match, but it does nothing for Maia WHEN he wins, the UFC will not be putting a one dimensional jitz guy against Silva!

Agreed,Maia will win!!But thanks to Leites I dont think Maia will get a title shot.

Maia ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!

by NM on Apr 29, 2009 8:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Let’s go Maia! I’m sure that if he does get a shot at Anderson, it will not end up like the Leites thing because Maia is just at another level. He can take a punch, then pull guard on Anderson, which would spell trouble. I’m sure Maia will do this right off the bat because he doesn’t want to attempt any subs when they’re all sweaty and wet[or in GSP’s case, all greased up]. Go Ma-eee-yah!!

by Syd[a.k.a."the Negation"] on Apr 29, 2009 10:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Right here with you fellas. Maia will sub him in the third with something slick. This card is insane, i hope Big Nog will probly try to get Maia’s help each other in this camp coz he’s connected with wand and galvao. If they both get subs, i will literally lose it.

by NameNotRequired on Apr 29, 2009 11:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maia isnt gonna sub shit…. He wont be able to take Marquardt down, Maia is gonna take a beating for 3 rounds.

by BMO on Apr 29, 2009 11:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt takes this one. He has been to the ground with Leites and got out of his holds. For me, Nate is the biggest threat to Anderson and his Title.

Winner should get Anderson.

My prediction: Nate via TKO (GnP) Round 2

by DownUnder on Apr 30, 2009 12:23 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the winner of this should get the winner of Henderson/Bisping.

So if I was betting, I’d say we’ll see Nate vs. Henderson… and then Nate vs. Anderson 2.

Meanwhile, Okami sits by the phone and waits…

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 30, 2009 1:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maia IS gonna take this one but it will not be easy. Marquardt is a big MW and has a good all round game and solid sub defense.

Hopefully Maia will be getting his striking on point (especially if it goes to the judges) as a fair amount of the fight could actually end up on the feet and he will need to be testing himself against a good striker first in order to get the confidence to face Anderson.

For all the people saying Maia won’t get the shot because of Leites well I think that would be totally fucked up. He has subbed everyone since arriving in the UFC and made BJJ entertaining for a lot of people who dont understand the finer aspects. You cant judge a potential fight based on someone elses performance.

He has a very different way of bringing people into his game and I think he will be much more effective than Leites as he was obviously scared to stand with Anderson. Maia will be forced to do what it takes to win, lose or draw especially following the controversy of the Leites / Anderson fight.

They wouldn’t be matching these guys up if they didn’t plan on giving one of them a title shot some time after.

by Ca$z on Apr 30, 2009 6:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m taking Nate in this one. And for all our sakes, with the landscape of the MW title picture, I hope I am right.

by DJ on Apr 30, 2009 6:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

maia is nothing like thales. He would never perform like that in a title match, that said marquardt is too much of a beast for maia

It’s ok with me!All those who still thinking that the best BJJ guys on the planet, just with is jits, can win over a TOP 10 MMA fighter on any day.I believe, they are the,one who’s gonna be disappointed on August 29!I,just didn’t know that BJJ was enough to win these days. But who knows maybe it’s me who don’t understand the game??

by Alpha Male 360 on Apr 30, 2009 7:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ca$z: I really enjoyed your post! nice work. I will be rooting for Maia. I love ju jitsu and no one does it better then Maia and Jacre. I really hope that Maia wins, and I think he is fully capable of submitting Marquardt, but it wont be easy for Maia…he is going to have to take some damage before securing the submission. This fight is good because we get to see what level of toughness Maia posses. Marquardt will be the favorite….so betting on Maia as an underdog is very attractive to me. Very much looking forward to this fight. UFC 102 is shaping up nicely.

JJ: whats up buddy? YOU need to stop going around n saying that Hendo is going to beat Bisping, because Im telling you right now, Bisping is going to win that fight. THere is no doubt about it! I am so sure about it!

by john on Apr 30, 2009 9:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

marquardt’s ground game is overlooked he used to sub ppl for fun before he developed a solid stand up game

i actually believe he can avoid the sub attempts by maia and win a UD/TKO

John, I think you literally just told someone to not have an opinion. Do you ever feel like you start to act like everyones big brother on this website? I like you man, but sometimes i feel like you try to push people way to much. Again no disrespect, im just sayin

As dynamic as Maia’s BJJ is, he’s never faced a Marquardt in his MMA career. Nothing even close. I highly doubt Maia wins this fight. Nates got a very underrated ground game and overall is leaps and bounds above Damian as an overall fighter.

by Machine on Apr 30, 2009 11:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s all good. John happens to be very passionate about his picks.

He also happens to be very wrong sometimes.

Is this one of those times? We’ll see. Henderson three years ago would absolutely annihilate Bisping. I think even an old, watered down Hendo will smother Bisping on July 11th.

Bisping is quick, but his strikes aren’t going to phase Henderson, and he will get outwrestled. If Bisping does manage to outpoint him, it will be more of a testament to Henderson’t deterioration than Bisping’s prowess.

Don’t believe the hype, john! Bisping has been coddled by the UFC brass to sell tickets in the UK. He is nothing special.

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 30, 2009 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bisping’s blowout over the doomsday crippling chainsaw clearly shows that he can hang with an all time p4p best. We will finally see bisping’s chin get tested coz he’ll be trapped in the clinch when that right hand lands.

You are crazy if you think Maia won’t get a title shot in his next few fights. He has never lost and only gone to decision once. He is at this time a one demensional fighter, but the best at what he does. Plus he isn’t a boring jits guy. With that said Silva would beat him. Prediction; Maia, rear naked in the second round. This is going to be a great fight. Going to be my first UFC event.

by Bluepit on Apr 29, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree and I’m gutted they didn’t put this one on the UFC 103 card as thats rumoured to be in the UK and I could have gotten to see it live. :-(

Hope its a good one for ya!

by Ca$z on Apr 30, 2009 6:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Maia wins and the UFC refuse to give him a title shot after Silva-Hendo/Bisping, then I will be fuming. Maia is a much better jits fighter than Thales Leites and would be a far more worthy opponent for Anderson, so he better not lose out on a deserved shot because Joe Silva gave an unworthy fighter a crack at the belt. Demian wouldn’t give up on taking Silva down and lie on the floor, with his BJJ he’s one of the very few guys that are a threat to Anderson. I’ll always be bitter if Maia wins and never gets his shot at Silva.

And saying first is a really childish thing to do, seriously what is the point?

by David W-S on Apr 29, 2009 8:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

listen guys, I’m the biggest jits fan. I’ll take transitions and subs over KO’s any day of the week. After that last fight, Maia won’t be getting a shot against Silva!

by kevin on Apr 29, 2009 8:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Maia can show Dana and Joe Silva that he will attack hard on his feet against Nate, he might help his case, but Dana is not going to let that dog and pony show (UFC 97) happen again.
I like Maia, but I don’t want to see that repeated either.

by Jrandolph on Apr 29, 2009 11:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you guys but the actual solution is to get Anderson out of the MW division. There is no one there who poses a legitimate threat to his title. IMO, is one of the most challenging issues of Dana’s tenure, and why Anderson is getting Forrest.

If Anderson moved permanently to LHW, the MW playing field becomes readjusted and would give us all something to talk about.

by DJ on Apr 30, 2009 6:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats BS Kevin.

Why are they giving him a title contender match up then??

Where does he go next after he beats Marquardt??

If that was the case they would be trying to sideline him like Okami.

One thing is Maia does sub people and is always in exciting fights.

I think Dana will just be expressing to both of them that they CANNOT have a repeat performance of the Leites fight and it will be all good.

by Ca$z on Apr 30, 2009 7:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont agree at all Kev. THe UFC loves Maia…he is totally different from Leites. Maia is used to training with that animal wanderlei, so i dont think he is afraid to stand with Anderson long enough to take him down, or just pull guard.

Kev: I will agree that I much rather see highly technical grappling chess matches instead of stand up battles….Like someone pointed out above…Maia is making jits exciting even to the casual fans that dont appreciate the ground game….Maia is going to be instrumental in educating the casual, blood thirsty fans of stand up battles…. the beauty of ju jitsu.

MArquardt is far too well-rounded and strong to be beat by a BJJ Maia. I know his BJJ is as good as it gets, and that he translates it well into MMA, though he starts each round standing and I expect to see him take a serious beating standing. His hybrid style is very effective on the ground, but not standing. Either or, Nate has a fantastic ground game, that is sometimes overlooked and questioned. Even if it wasn’t as great as it is, the guy has strength of a LHW.
Marquardt will loosen Maia up standing, make his knees weak, and take the TKO finish in the 3rd.

by GodDamnMike on Apr 30, 2009 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Guys, Marquardt has only lost one round (maybe 2 if you give Thales the first round of their fight)in the UFC and it was to the Champion. Maia is great at BJJ, but their is no way Maia wins this fight. You guys should go back and watch the Maia vs Ed Herman fight. You will see much of the same except Nate is 10 times better than short fuse and wont make the mistake that Herman did towards the end. Maia was loosing that fight until he got the submission. I would like to see Maia fight Almeida. That would be a BJJ fight not to miss.

I don’t think Maia wins this, Nate has more dimensions, unfortunetly.

And Newfie, a lot of time you can find news before outlets it’s not all that hard if you have some ins or even on forums.
However, if your not just some random some asshole and you a website, you have to have a substantiated source you also have to write a whole article and do the headers and graphics and what not.
You cant just post every thing you hear and post it in a comment page.

Thank you Jow and Shaiz, Nate is a WAY better fighter at this point. I think he wins this easy. A year from know we will see, but Maia is not half the mixed martial artist that marquardt is, and that is not opinion

I was so stoked when I read this news. OMG kev, beating Nate M. does nothing for your career? r u kidding me? If he beats Nate he’s got all the cred he needs. Maybe they’ll put him up against Okami 1st if the timing is right but the title shot comes in clear view if he beats Nate. BTW, he WONT beat Nate. Being a N.W. inhabitant , I will be at this show. I expect Nate to be far surpior in the guard of Maia than his predecessors AND totally kick his ass on the feet.

by naturalist on Apr 30, 2009 2:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i am gonna have to go with my man nate on this one. either way i think who ever wins will get the next title shot. (assuming the winner puts on a good show)

by child on Apr 30, 2009 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We don’t play that game here, you knuckle-dragging troglodyte.

Maia will be in tough against Nate standing up… I think he might get caught before he can get it to the ground. And Nate is hard to get down because he’s so big and strong.

My heart says Maia by submission, but I think Nate might be too much for him at this point. Maia is too easy to hit standing up. This will be a very tough fight for both guys.

So no title fights likely for Portland then?

by Jeremyjackson on Apr 29, 2009 8:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JJ, I think Maia will have trouble pulling guard, and think he really needs to improve his stand up, everyone should be on to him!

by kevin on Apr 29, 2009 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly JJ!Stop it people, about that title shot crap!He wont be able to pass thru Nate. There is no way that Maia, can sustain the striking of Marquard.Plus i don’t see him at all being capable to submitted him either.Nate is just too strong for him.I also doubt that Nate, will be afraid to go to the ground. If MacDonald was able to survive 3 rounds on the ground with Damian,i don’t see why Nate, wouldn’t be capable to do so,too.MacDonald took him to the ground with ease in the first round and Nate is way better wrestler and,can control Damain on the ground and ground n pound the shit out of him.I seriously don’t see how Maia, can win this fight just with is BJJ.Sorry but just don’t see it!

by Alpha Male 360 on Apr 29, 2009 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m right there with you Alpha. Maia’s ground game is phenomenal. Unfortunately it will not be effective when he is on the ground because he gets dropped and is trying to pull guard while still dazed. Nate by tko. This will be a good learning experience for Maia. Not meaning that nate is gonna teach him a lesson in a trash talking sense. But I think maia will learn what areas he really needs to refine his game to be an elite fighter. Obviously his ground game is top notch.

Great fight this one, one I’ve been calling for since 95. I’m looking forawrd to Maia getting his 6th UFC win and his 5th SOTN bonus. Nates a good fighter but he won’t be able to deal with Maia on the ground and nobody has been able to keep a fight with Demian standing so far. Demian is for real and once he beats Marquardt, nobody will be able to question the quality of his opponents again. Anderson is now going to be kept busy, fighting at LHW as well as having 2 worthy contenders for his MW belt in the near future.

101 and 102 are both looking like excellent cards and will be more than a match for 100, I wouldn’t be suprised if both are better shows.

the winning streak of maia stop right here, i like demian a lot, but nate its so well rounded, really strong and really big i am pretty sure he will win by TKO plus marquartd is one of my favorites, after he beat maia he should have another title shot

Nate has good submission defence but he’s never faced anyone with the BJJ skills of Demian Maia, if this fight goes to the ground then he’s done. Nate’s only hope of winning this fight will be to keep it standing and that is much easier said than done. War Maia, 09 is his year.

by David W-S on Apr 29, 2009 9:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maia’s only chance of winning this fight is getting it to the ground, easier said than done.. Maia has horrible standup

by RoB on Apr 29, 2009 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i wouldnt said that nate is done when the fight hits the ground, yes i can say that nate will be very close to loose if he is on his back but if he is on top i guarantee that he will GnP a little bit and then managed to get up and that will be the story of the fight with maia trying to pull guard like in the maia/sonnen fight(before that great TD of maia) and when he will try to set up TD he will get caught

by JoW on Apr 29, 2009 9:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good point JoW, but the last place Nate wants to be in this fight is on the ground, even if he’s on top Maia is still very dangerous. He’s also shown that he can takedown good wrestlers and grapplers with sweeps, so Nate will have to work hard to keep the fight standing. Nate has looked fantastic in his last 2 fights but I don’t see anyone beating Maia for a long time, he is just too good on the ground.

UFC doesnt want both of these fighters to get a shot at Silva caus thats a 100% guarantee that their so called “p4p king” will lose, so they eliminate one of them to bring that % down.

Maia can have the best jits in the world it wont matter against the strongest MW in the world who tosses LHW’s around.

Nate will keep it standing and give Maia a much needed KO which perhaps will teach him to work more on the standup.

I’m sure Maia is working extensively on his stand-up. You don’t just become a proficient striker overnight, oe even in a couple years.

It takes a long time, and if you haven’t done it as a young man you’ll probably never be particularly good, unless you have a natural inclination for talent in that discipline.

I disagree, Maia and Marquardt need to have this fight to fully establish themselves as title contenders. I’d rather see great fights between top middleweights then have truly deserving contenders than have Anderson face off against fighters that aren’t ready to face him. I personally don’t want to see Silva in rematches with Nate or Hendo because he’s already beaten them, but if they get past Maia and Bisping respectively then they will deserve their title shots.

As for Maia’s stand up, I’d be amazed if he isn’t constantly working on improving it. I don’t think it’s as bad as people say because nobody has even come close to KO’g him yet. I love watching Maia fight, his BJJ is world class and nobody has a hope against him on the ground. Nate’s a well rounded fighter but I see Demian taking him down and submitting him and earning himself another SOTN bonus.

good solid card but I’m not that excited about Randy vs Nog as I used to be…

yeah both are in the twilights of there career, and the winner of this fight will probably get the last big win of their career.

WAR COUTURE!!!

I am a big Nate fan. I really want to him fight me (Silva) again but I’m sure that won’t happen. I would love to see him beat Maia and I think he can. Can’t wait to see this fight.

It’s been a good run, but Maia will be 5-1 in the UFC after this fight. Marquardt’s too much for him, too much for anybody really…except tha spida man, of course!

by tha spida on Apr 29, 2009 10:03 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think nate wins, he’s too well rounded for the one dimentional maia, hope he ko’s him. :P

by nathan on Apr 29, 2009 10:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yea maia is going to get mangled bad i mean very bad if it stays standing which it will. Marquardt going to keep his distance with a nice stiff jab. Uppercut when maia goes in going to ko him . Maia hasnt faced a legit wrestler Sonnen dont count. Marquardt ko 2nd round pulling guard doesnt work against top 5 fighters. He going to have to be on top to win this.

by DESPERUS on Apr 29, 2009 10:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sonnen doesnt count? Do your homework bro, he was an alternate for the Olympics. And obviously you have to have decent striking for wrestling to even be a threat but lets not get crazy and say Chael isnt a legit wrestler.

by WB on Apr 30, 2009 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

chael is top notch wrestler and maia hit one of sickest takedown i ever saw!!!! Maia by KO , just kidding 2nd rd heel hook!!!!

by pan am champ on Apr 29, 2009 10:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Marquardt is 8X the fighter that Chael is. Nate is a BJJ black belt with solid wrestling and solid stand-up. Chael is a one dimensional wrestler.

Agreed. And Sonnen still managed to tag Maia pretty well a few times. This is going to be an introduction to the big leagues for Maia, and I think he’s in trouble.

this is were u seperate the great bjj artist and the great fighters. maia is gona forget how 2 pull a submission wen he gets hit. But maia standup is geting better he is training wit wandy…lol the least technichal fighter in mma [tied with jardine] but wandy show hom how 2 swing wild and keep ur hands down and stick ut chin out it seens 2 be wrkin 4 him sinnce he returned. nate by peruvian neck tie lol or ko 2nd

I had a feeling this fight would happen once they announced the Spider fighting at LHW again. I can’t wait to see this fight, I think that Maia wins. I know that Nate is big, but Maia’s competed against guys a lot bigger than him even though it was only BJJ. Nate is a huge MW, but I just think that Maia will continue choking people, I hope he’s able to choke his way to the championship by the end of the year.

by Shadyone33 on Apr 29, 2009 11:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i think silva should stay at lhw and the winner of this should be mw champ.

by Beast3000 on Apr 30, 2009 1:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Or have Silva stay at LHW, and have the winner of this fight face the winner of Hendo-Bisping for the newly vacated MW title. With Okami first in line for a title shot.

Nate by KO or TKO.

i’d like maia to win but nate is gonna whoop that ass

by denniskuderjr on Apr 30, 2009 8:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nice addition for the portland card!!! Nate by TKO. Too well rounded and strong for Maia.

by LJ on Apr 30, 2009 1:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Its real simple!!! if Maia gets it to the ground… it OVER!! and it wont take long.
If he dosnt… its over for him!!

by jim on Apr 30, 2009 2:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Whatever jim I’ll be the first to say this… maia’s ground is a little over rated. Look at his opponents, look at his grappling match he had with macdonald, macdonald almost subbed maia a couple of times, if you don’t believe me watch the fight. Maia is good, very good at bjj but most of his easy wins were guys with weak bjj. Nate is a very well rounded bjj blackbelt who likes to strike, Maia’s so called chess match will go right out the window with a couple of hard dazing punches, he won’t be able to think “so many moves ahead” LOL.

I agree in principal with what someone once said punch a black belt hard in the head he becomes a brown belt, punch him again a purple belt one more a blue belt and finally again a white belt. This was very evident in the gsp/penn 2 fight, penn was dazed and took quite a beating and was fighting IMO far less than a black belt, and was making rookie mistakes. This is MMA people not a bjj match, I just hope nate KO’s maia, I’m pretty certain dana and allmost everyone else would groan at the thought of a one dimensional bjj fighter fighting silva again.
