Sean Sherk not overlooking Frank Edgar at UFC 98 en route to another title shot

Props: MMA Fanhouse
Quoteworthy:
He's got a pretty good name. He's done real well in the UFC; I've seen him in the top 10 before. I think it's another step closer to a title shot, which is my main goal ... I'm not looking for an easy title shot. I know Kenny's not easy but if Kenny wins, I don't want a shot just because I already beat Kenny. Give me BJ again, man. BJ beat me and for me that's motivation, especially with everything before that lead into that fight with all the drama and stuff like that ... I just want the best fighter to win [at UFC 101], and hopefully if I do my job on May 23, hopefully I can be next in line for a title shot ... I mean Frankie is really tough; I never overlook anybody. I never have in my entire career and I'm not going to start now ... as soon as you start overlooking guys, that's when you run into a problem and I'm not going to do that.
Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk talks about getting another crack at the 155-pound strap he coughed up following a controversial drug test that pegged him as a steroid user. "The Muscle Shark" also anticipates a very stiff test at UFC 98 "Evans vs. Machida" in the form of lightweight standout Frank Edgar. A win could put him in line for a title shot against either BJ Penn or Kenny Florian following their championship bout at UFC 101 in August. Either way, it's a rematch for Sherk. The question is, who would you rather see -- Sherk vs. "The Prodigy" or Sherk vs. "KenFlo?"

sherk sucks
.
alright guys, just won my trip in a poker tournament. kinda coincidence that john texted me while at the final table.
kevjack115@yahoo.com anyone interested 100% in going and being in the luxury box at 101, email me. we got 6 or so spots available. I will be calling the wachovia rep after lunch and sending an email out to you guys after that!
within 5 minutes of emailing guys (it’s after work on east coast so all of you didn’t get it) I got 6 100% yeses! ‘m leaving a deposit so we have first right of refusal to the suite tomorrow with my money. This leaves 6 seats left. Hit me up guys, my guess is tomorrow when guys go to work and get my email, the seats will go!
I’m hoping it will be between 400-500 and it includes food/beverage. These are mid level suites, not nose bleed boxes!!!

seriously… haters! sean sherk is a great fighter who has only lost to those 3 guys, and he has something like 30+ wins… hes gonna steamroll edgar then hopefully well see him put a smackdown on bj or kflo!

Sherk is a lock in this fight. Dont let the pdds scare you gamblers away….Lay some money down on Sherk. I dont like Sherk, but money is money, so I will enjoy watching him win me some cheese.
Edgar has NO chance. I would love to see Sherk dominate huggie bear.

sherk is a beast
he is not the most exciting but i sat through the silva fight i think this fight will be great to watch compared to that
sherk is the bigger, stronger, faster wrestler …. it seems to me he is going to do what maynard did to edgar and just basically overpower and out wrestle him
i think maynard should be fighting sherk for number 1 contender fight instead of this but whatever i’m always up for seeing edgar get beat
by ufcaddict on Apr 29, 2009 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions
Sherk is a beast and he is getting better.
I think that too many people are writing him off in the division after the BJ fight.
Basically he just had an awful gameplan and got exposed because of it. I wouldn’t bet against sherk in any fight at 155.

Sherk by way of vicious TKO. I’m talking little Frankie Edgars head bouncing off the canvas in a way that makes your own head turn to mush. Ow

Cogito: slow down Playa..I got sherk winning this fight too, but he doesnt have a vicious KO capability in his arsenal!

yeah sherk is easily top 5 in the world at lw imo. i only see penn, aoki, maybe alvarez, hansen, and kenflo beating him

guys, I acknowledge all Sherk has done and his win/loss record is impressive. I meant he’s boring and I don’t care for him. Must suck to be like A-rod and just not be able to win the big one!

After watching the Sherk and Griffin fight seeing how close it was even on the score cards with the lack of cardio Griffin has compared 2 Diego. Its no doubt in my mind that Diegos gona be Sherks toughest test up to date.Diegos gona destroy Sherk in a test of cardio and wills.Mark my words.

Sherk didn’t beat Kill-Flo so much as he held him down for 5 rounds while bleeding like a faucet after eating a hell-bow.
by PW on Apr 28, 2009 7:21 PM EDT reply actions
It would be a much different fight now I think. Ken-flo is much improved and Sherk wants everyone to think he is a striker now.

come on Jesse, you respond to someone complaining quick, get to my comments buddy!
by kevin on Apr 28, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions
i wouldn’t call sherk a striker but he certainly showed some skill against griffin.
by JB on Apr 29, 2009 6:09 PM EDT up reply actions
Sherk will beat him the Maynard did. Sherk will have crisper stand up too
I’d love to see the Florian re-match, but he’s fight is much tougher than the first time he fought Sherk…even if he has come on wit his skill set
by IrishKev on Apr 28, 2009 7:55 PM EDT up reply actions
WAR MUSCLE SHARK!! always liked him and think he will overwhelm frankie in the standup for some type of stoppage
WAIT!!! thats right i think sherk will finally finish a fight

what does beating Frank Edger prove? Sherk has beaten and fought top guys at LW and WW, Edgar moves him no closer to a rematch with penn as beating Junie Browning would
by kevin on Apr 28, 2009 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions
He also won against tyson griffin who else should he fight
by onthebutton336 on Apr 28, 2009 9:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Haha Kevin, I think Edgar is a fair few notches above Junie Browning. LOL!
Edgar’s a really good fighter. I look forward to this match-up.
by Johnny Farnham on Apr 28, 2009 11:38 PM EDT up reply actions
agreed, you can’t knock a guy with wins on Tyson Griffin, Hermes Franca and Spencer Fisher; he’s legit. If anything he might look at cutting to 145 in the future.
by O damn he got caught on Apr 29, 2009 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions
I’m an Edgar fan and I think he’s too small for the current 155 division. Dropping to 145 would put him in immediate title contention. The talent pool in that weight class is just as deep as at 155 just not as recognizable.
by Machine on Apr 29, 2009 8:54 AM EDT up reply actions
I think Sherk will be too much for Edgar, but Edgar is a tough SOB. I wouldn’t sleep on him that’s for sure. It should be a hell of fight. I do see Edgar having to switch his training camp up a bit to get to the next level much like Joe Daddy.
by DSmith on Apr 28, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions
I agree. I think this fight is a lock. Get your money on it now if the odds are good.
I see edgar having to pack on 10+ pounds of muscle in order to win. I’m not saying that because he’s fighting sherk, I just feel he’s too small for the division (refer to the maynard fight – where the it’s true that the “truth” got bullied due size disadvantage)

unless he completely ices edgar, id rather see him fight gray maynard next. he didnt look dominant against tyson.
by COR on Apr 28, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions
That would be a sick fight (maynard/sherk)!
by BulletproofTiger on Apr 28, 2009 7:35 PM EDT up reply actions
Sherk takes this. And i think you might have something there with the Maynard next thing. Could be a huge step forward by the bully, but I’d really love to see sherk knock him out. I’m sick of the bully.
by rockwell on Apr 28, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions
I agree, Maynard’s already beaten Edgar and since then beat Clementi and Jim Miller, so he should be a top contender. I know people find Gray boring but he has been very effective and his striking looked good against Miller. As both Sherk and Maynard are excellent wrestlers a fight between them could end up staying on the feet as it would be a suprise if either of them are able to take their opponent down and both want to prove that they are not just lay and pray guys.
As for Sherk-Edgar, this could either be exciting or boring, depending on what strategy Sherk comes in with and whether or not Edgar can deal with Sherk’s wrestling, as he will be at a size disadvantage. I like Frankie but the Maynard fight showed that he may be too small to make a big impact in the LW division and a drop down to FW in the WEC would improve his chances at winning a world title. I’m not a Sherk fan and I don’t particularly want him getting another title shot but I don’t see him losing this fight. Hopefully Edgar can prove me wrong.
by David W-S on Apr 28, 2009 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions
Edgar will get ruined it, Edgar is like a bad Tyson Griffen, and tyson is is a bad Sean Sherk.
Sherk probably beats Kenny again too.
by ShaiZ on Apr 28, 2009 8:08 PM EDT reply actions
How’s Edgar a bad Tyson Griffin when he’s already beaten him? That doesn’t make any sense.
by David W-S on Apr 28, 2009 8:12 PM EDT up reply actions
Well, that’s true, I just think Tyson has fought tougher opponents.
Tyson and Edgar both like to go to decision a lot and both don’t have great finishing skills.
Neither does Sherk, but he’s stronger and has a better striking.
by ShaiZ on Apr 29, 2009 1:05 AM EDT up reply actions
Good point, I don’t think I’ve ever seen Tyson or Frankie finish a fight. Usually their fights are exciting but they really need to be able to stop opponents if they want to challenge the upper echelon of the LW division.
by David W-S on Apr 29, 2009 9:23 AM EDT up reply actions
i like sherk alot and i think its realy cool him wanting to fight BJ again – i would have thought he would expect the kenny fight after this fight, if Florian beat BJ but props yo sherk – hes never shy to fight. i could see him beating BJ in a rematch possibly if BJ’s motvation has gone. We will see when kenny gets his shot! WAR KEN-FLO!
by Randy for Couture on Apr 28, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions
Either fight would be awesome I’m a huge Sherk fan so I would love to see Kenny beat BJ, then Sherk can either fight BJ for a title shot or go straight to Kenny. I think Frankie will lose(TKO??hopefully) and then he should drop to WEC 145.

I am. Sherk and Maynard are both underrated. Good quality fighters.

I want to see a Sherk VS Kenflo II just to see Kenny whoop Sherk’s ass. Kenny is a 10 times better fighter than he was then. I see him winning by TKO in the Second. This is coming from a guy that HATES Kenny Florian!! I guess I hate Sean Sherk worse!!

Dude you cant blame or hate on a guy after those commments…ANYONE that steps into the cage has 1. balls 2.Skills…UFC doesnt have cans…Sherk wants BJ again..that would be phat to see..i think this time he would take him down…and get submitted but still he doenst want an easy title shot..

it’ll be sanchez vs sherk for number one contender to fight the winner of penn/florian.

it’ll be sanchez vs sherk for #1 contender (after the penn/florian fight).
by kneetotheface on Apr 29, 2009 12:53 PM EDT reply actions
Screw Maynard, Sherk should fight Sanchez for a title shot. Sherk vs Sanchez would be an awesome fight. I’m fairly certain Sherk will handle Edgar, and I’m also pretty sure that Diego is going to overwhelm huggy bear. Sherk vs Sanchez at UFC 102 or 103.
by kg on Apr 29, 2009 1:08 PM EDT reply actions
I’m thinking its pretty saft to drop some coin on Sherk. The line on Sherk is -271 and I hear that it should get better, so hold your bets for now.

i hope kenny wins so we see sherk kenny 2. sherk has grown on me since the steroid debacle. he was game against tyson griffin and confused me with his gameplan against bj. he also seems to have improved his attitude as well.
