Nick Diaz vs Scott Smith added to June 6 Strikeforce card

Strikeforce announced today that former Elite XC fighters and new Strikeforce acquisitions Nick Diaz (19-7) and Scott Smith (15-5) are confirmed for a special 180-pound showdown during the live Showtime telecast of Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" from the Scottrade Center in St. Louis , Mo., on June 6.
Diaz (19-7) is coming off perhaps the biggest win of his career on April 11. The former UFC welterweight stopped promotion pillar Frank Shamrock via second round TKO in the main event of "Shamrock vs. Diaz" in the first Strikeforce event since putting its new Pro Elite acquisitions to work.
From Diaz:
"I think this is a great fight for me, but I really hate that (Smith) brings his kids to every one of his fights because now I’m going to be made out to be the bad guy or some sort of villain after I beat him up. At the end of the day, I’m going to do what I have to do though and take him out."
"Hands of Steel" lived up to his nickname earlier this month by knocking out the hard hitting Benji Radach with a little over a minute remaining in their three round slugfest. Smith was battered and bloodied, but refused to back down and stunned "Razor" -- and the rest of the crowd with his thrilling come-from-behind win.
Now the two biggest winners from April 11 will meet on June 6 for a chance to crown themselves the King of St. Louis -- and perhaps San Jose -- now that Strikeforce elder statesman Frank Shamrock has dropped two straight.
From Smith:
"I usually take a few weeks off, get out of shape and go up to about 210 pounds and wind up spending a few weeks just getting back in shape, but I decided I wasn’t going to do that this time. I’m 195 pounds right now and I feel great. Diaz is a great fighter. He’s going to come in there and out grapple me and out strike me so what I have to do is go in there and beat him up. I actually think this is more of a dangerous fight for him than it is for me."
The June 6 event will be headlined by former EliteXC middleweight champion "Ruthless" Robbie Lawler taking on former EliteXC welterweight champion Jake Shields in a 182-pound catch weight bout in the featured main event.
Additionally, "The New York Badass" Phil Baroni (13-10) will collide with Joe "Diesel" Riggs (29-10) in a 170-pound scrap.
Tickets for Strikeforce: "Lawler vs. Shields" are on sale at the Scottrade Center box office as well as at all Ticketmaster locations (800-745-3000), Ticketmaster online (www.ticketmaster.com), and Strikeforce’s official website (www.strikeforce.com).

congrats Jesse…U finally beat me to one! lol (teasing)…I was actually just coming on here to post the news.
Great fight man! Strikeforce aint messing around. I Love smith, and appreciate the warrior that he is, but I just dont pick against Diaz, especially after the money I lost when he beat my boy Gomi in his prime!
Looks like Diaz is trying to take a run at the middleweight division. He would twist their middleweight champion, Cung Le into a pretzel! lol

i must agree diaz could tear cung le up but i don’t think his ego lets him take smith down and he’s gonna get caught or cut

I agree John, Strikeforce is putting together a serious card there. Nothing on par with the UFC, but definitely above WEC material nowadays (seems like the WEC kind of slacked off, as far as exciting fights go).
Lawler I hope knocks Jake’s face off, which could set up for Lawler/Diaz 2. I watched that knockout earlier today. I think it would be a great rematch, if Nick can get enough muscle up to 185. I fully expect Nick to TKO Scott. Scott is very tough, but also seems like he folds easily, before he makes a last push to avoid defeat. Nick by TKO in the 2nd.
Also, Diesel vs Baroni could be pretty good. I go for Diesel

john what would you think of a possible james irvin vs hendo matchup? i think that one would be one helluva slugfest..
i think strikeforce is putting better cards together then the ufc right now kinda, all the ufc ppv’s lately have been a big letdown and the strikeforce cards all live up to the little bit of hype they get

If (when) Hendo loses to Bisping, I wouldn’t mind seeing that fight, as long as Irvin KO’s McFedries. Nice rebound fight, but not really a gimme for Hendo.
by Synyster on Apr 27, 2009 11:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I was kinda impressed by Yamada in sengoku even though he gassed hard. Gotta loves ZST tag team matches. Also Diaz takes it here, probly a UD or sub. just more technical everywhere.
Also Irvin can crack with more than just his right hand. He lights up hendo on the feet before a hendo clinch takedown/ gnp to a UD. I seriously think that a body KO is the way to go about it with hollywood.

Tag team would totally suck!
Anything even close to resembling WWE is dangerous for the sport and just plain crap.

Complete off coment Synyster being that Hendo and Mcfedries are both gonna win their next fights.

it’s not a guarantee, bisping could very well play it smart and try to outpoint hendo striking and just come in and out and not try to finish it and win.. don’t doubt bisping all that much man, the guy has been in there with some hardhitting dudes and survived and won

how do you think diaz is a lock board? smith has fought at heavyweight and won.. diaz fought at lightweight the size difference here is quite a lot, add smiths crazy will to not get knocked out with his heavy hands and lack of power and movement from diaz and you got the equation to stop diaz..
sure diaz could win this on the ground but when was the last time he really used his ground game?
by randy murders on Apr 28, 2009 2:14 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m with you NM! Machida and Serra are my picks too. Sorry Synyster. Serra may have a chance against Hughes. But sorry Sugarshad, your time’s up!

the james irvin hendo match up is pretty good but those are two are my favorite fighters. i think irvin can ko hendo its just hendo will use his takedowns to score a unanamous decision or gnp stoppage
by Jared on Apr 28, 2009 7:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Syd: Im with you on those picks buddy!
As for the Hendo/Irvin fight….I think its a waste of time. Do u guys really think Hendo is going to sit there and Bang with Irvin? I dont! I see Hendo clinching imedieatley and taking Irvin to the ground were he is like a fish out of water.
Hendo would easily win a unanimous decision.
Why waste an aging Legend like Hendo on a James Irvin fight? Hendo doesnt have much time left in the game. I would prefer to see Hendo matched up against guys like Okami, Marquardt/Hendo would be a great fight. Leites would be a good fight for Hendo stylistically.. Maia vs. hendo would be cool.
James Ir4vin is one of the most entertaining fighters in the game…but he is nothing more then a chris Lytle type of fighter. He has NO BUSINESS being matched up against top 5 MW!

Long time in the making, should be a bar brawl!!! Just hope Diaz doesn’t act like some Stockton hood thug like he did with Shamrock. Smith won’t put up with that.

I expect Diaz to act like a stoned thug from Stockton, because THATS WHAT HE IS! If you dont like him just dont watch his fights. You might as well say "Wow this St. Pierre fight should be a “bar brawl” but I hope he doesn’t show up acting all French Canadian like he did with BJ." Now how stupid does that sound? Dirtbag you might as well smoke herb too because it doesn’t sound like your that bright anyway.

JRE you would think the same if your son met Diaz at a signing, and he came in baked. He’s outstanding in the cage, and shocked me with his standup vs Lawler and Shamrock. But he doesn’t have to act like a punk. Your example is whacked. I know all about Stockton and I know “THATS WHAT HE IS”. These two are gonna bang and I was trying to use another phrase other than “a war”. So chill out and count to 10.

I’m sure Stockton thugs can show some courtesy sometimes. It’s not lame to expect anyone to show some decency because people can.
But it’s better to say, Let’s hope Diaz doesn’t act like a disrespectful thug again. I’m sick of hearing about Stockton all the time anyway.

Gee,Mania what i have to do for you to post my opinionJRE,your analogy is sublime.I think that a lots of peoples know by listen NWA or looking in the crime rate stats, that Stockton is a hardcore place.trying to make understand the guy that he made a lame statement, because of the obvious,it’s alright. But try to pass for a genius who’s got super anology, make you a king of stand up comedy!!How the hell a french Canadian act?Do we look stupid because we speak french?Do we act stupid because we are french?GSP is french ok,but did he act stupid against BJ because he’s french Canadian? What is it obvious in that? What about saying, that when Hendo/Bisping,will face off you hope that he don’t act, like a english American.Does that’s sounds better for you?Do you think that, would made a good analogy?I think that, you show me your high level of IQ.Believe me since you post your masterpiece last night, that i try to tell you what i think, and i really tone down my comments right now because Mania seems to have difficulty to accept my real opinion about you!The same goes to your buddy john!!Hope you posting this one Mania!!Thank you!

Awesome AlphaMale..my counter blogs were not posting either vs. JRE. Stockton just made the Forbes list of #5 out of 10 of most dangerous cities in American, the only city in CA at that. Not trying to put down Stockton, but Diaz doesn’t help matters. Aside from that, this will be an all out brawl!
by DirtbagHtr on Apr 28, 2009 8:11 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Alpha: I think you’ve miss understood JRE posts. He’s saying that no matter who you are or where your from you are you. Diaz doesn’t act like a punk he is a punk. GSP doesn’t act French Canadian he is French Canadian, Jesse Holland does act like a crap reporter he is a crap reporter (J/K) Get my point?
JRE was abit harsh on Dirtbag but essentially correct, even if I think Diaz could and can show some respect to some of his opponents.

Don’t worry Moon UK,i got the point. He’s try to make an analogy by,stating something obvious.Just, like you did.Look carefully to what he said.i know that was the point(obvious)that he was trying to say.But how be a french Canadian make you act like one. That doesn’t make any sense.I think that’s you who miss understood the post!
by Alpha Male 360 on Apr 28, 2009 8:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you kidding me!WTF that i didn’t get. That he is what he is.no matter who you are or where your from you are you.meaning GSP coming from Quebec make him be a French Canadian.Nick Diaz coming from Stockton make him be a stoned thug from Stockton.Right, like you said.If that was formulate like this, like we did, then i wouldn’t even talk about it,because that’s obvious. But that’s not,at all,the way he express his analogy.Instead he said “acting, like a French Canadian”.That doesn’t mean that you speak french. As a matter of fact, that don’t mean shit,It let just you supposed that he’s acting, like a dumbass and that is why John laugh about it.I hope that you are agreed with that!
